49ers Pass Rushers - Better Than Advertised?
This is the post I put together over at SB Nation Bay Area. Head over and check it out. Mike Sando's recent blog post had an interesting stat: The 49ers sent five or more pass rushers only 30.5 percent of the time. I examine the figure and what the 49ers pass rush actually bring.

Interesting to read some of those stats
When the team racks up 44 sacks with the lead rusher only getting 6.5, that says something about the team’s pass rush. Then to see that most of those sacks do not come when we are applying more than 4 rushers is good to hear. I think the one stat I would like to see along with this is how effective we were at sending 5 or more rushers.

It says something about the defensive coordinator
Did you read the 2009 sack tracker?
It did a good job of breaking down most (all?) of the 2009 sacks.

But does it make you want to keep Lawson?
There’s a paradox between the balance of responsibility for success, and the individual accomplishments of Lawson. We know Lawson does well, but it doesn’t answer how much he’s worth. What is the real baseline for that position on this defense.
Good Job, I only wish it was a post on NFL.com
I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

Pass rush isn't the only responsibility of the STRONG SIDE olb.
Lawson is an above average NFL starter because of his strength against the run, coverage on TEs and RBs, and his ability to sniff out screens and trick plays.
I believe Smiley once posted a comment where he said that only a very small percentage of the league’s pass rushers have double digit sacks.

Manny gets a bum rap from a lot of 49er fans...
And there’s a reason for this. When he was drafted, he was touted and expected to be the next great pass rusher, the next Fred Dean or Charles Haley. This has not panned out, so many consider him a “bust”.
But as chikmagnet points out, he is an EXCELLENT player in many facets of the game, and I for one would hate to see us lose him. As Jamie Dukes frequently says on the NFL network, “pay the man”
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
Those expectations were really unwarranted
I mean, he wasn’t even a high 1st round pick or anything.
He was the 22nd selection.
That said, I don’t believe he should be overpaid. If he starts asking for Karlos Dansby type money then he can walk…..Although I think he’ll be more reasonable and accept a fair contract.

That's not why he guts a bum rap for me
he was a low first round pick, and I basically expect 2nd round performance out of those guys.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
I'd say he's delivered, then.

Well I think he's an ok linebacker
but not the best outside linebacker on the team like many seem to think.

I share your opinion
I think Manny is above average. I also hope we find a way to keep him. Being that its not looking too likely, I’m beginning the stages of rationalization.

I still don't
but I’m going to do a project this summer. I’ll re-watch every 49er game from last season and only pay attention to Lawson and see if my opinion changes.
I tend to focus more on offensive and defensive lines (positions that I absolutely love), so even though I’ve watched every 49er game at least twice I’ll do it with a renewed emphasis on Lawson.

Think the 49ers can keep him?
There was/is that whole contract dispute…. but the 49ers have been good about paying their players.
Maybe a strong season/chance of new stadium will boost 49er revenue, thus player salary money?
What is the revenue \ stadium funding relation?
Might they not opt to keep the salary budget the same and focus some money elsewhere?
I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

The two budgets are seperate
Jed York mentioned that they’re going to continue to spend to improve the product on the field as they normally would and would use a different budget to raise money for the stadium.

Trade Manny for Lamar Woodley!
Dashon, Mays, and Bamm Bamm will get the record for most decapitations in one season

he wants about 40 mil a year
I don’t think that’s a possibility. Plus, we have good depth at OLB.
