Had a chat with Coach Singletary tonight. He was doing media interviews all day in London today to promote the 3 October game at Wembley against the Broncos, and I sat in on one of them, which he was doing with my organisation, and before the interview we spoke for 15 minutes or so.
Clearly, since I was a complete stranger, he was not about to tell me stuff that you haven't previously heard in interviews, but it was fantastic to meet him, and I thought I'd share my pleasure here!
Aside from my personal enjoyment at meeting the man, the most interesting thing to share was just how animated he got when he spoke in the actual on-air interview about Michael Crabtree. Our interviewer, David Croft, asked him who the leading lights would be in the Wembley game for San Francisco. In order, Singletary listed Alex Smith, Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree. When he mentioned Crabtree, he grinned widely, and proceeded to say how "amazed" he was at the way Crabtree played last season, adding: "It takes a lot to amaze me."
Aside from that it was a bunch of stuff you'd either expect him to say ("excited about coming to London") or have heard before (eg he was asked about the Super Bowl winning Bears team), so I don't have much to report, other than Sing was a thoroughly nice chap who I enjoyed meeting very much. In my business - I work in the UK media - you get blase about meeting famous sportspeople but I went out of my way to go and say HI to Mike, and I'm glad I did. More than anything, he will now be able to go back to the States and say that he met me ;)
