10 reasons why there'll be a new CBA

The NFL owners have been making noises about "uncertain future of the NFL", and the "strong possibility of a lockout". To quote Mike Ditka regarding the possibility of a lockout "I can't believe anybody is that stupid". Keeping with that here are 10 reasons why I think there will be a new CBA done in time to continue football.

You don't shell out this kind of money on players if you're not certain what the market will be. Not if you plan on staying in business.

Bonus reasons:

1.) Average NFL team's net worth is close to $1 billion. (Forbes).

2.) Average profit per NFL team in 2009. $212,500,000.

3.) Most profitable sport in the US? The NFL

MLB--Average franchise worth $491 million. Total income of $6.8 billion. Operating costs of $522,000 Average profit per team $209 million

NFL--Average franchise worth $1 billion. Total income of $7.8 billion.  Operating costs of $1.034 billion. Average profit per team $212.5 million

NBA--Average franchise worth $367 million. Total revenue of $4 billion. Operating costs of $233 million. Average profit per team of $125.5 million

NHL--Average franchise worth $223 million. Total revenue of $3 billion. Operating costs of $184 million. Average profit per team of $93.86 million

Source: Plunkett Research

Despite rising costs the NFL continues to be a gold mine for the owners and is basically a license to print money.

4.) Rookie signings are up 29% over last year at this time.

Anyone....

…want to go in with me and buy the next expansion team? I’ve got $1,322.83 to kick in. I figure that is a good head start (if we want to buy before 2087)

I didn't include in the list

whatever new deal Peyton Manning reaches with the Colts which will likely be over $100 million, nor the deal that Sam Bradford will sign with the Rams which will probably pay him in the neighborhood of $48 million guaranteed.

The owners want a bigger profit

If you look at that list, the poor little NFL owners only average around a 20% profit on their net worth. Everybody else is averaging 30 to almost 50%. Guess that might account for their poor mouthing.

Even as players salaries have been rising, revenue and profits have continued to rise at a slightly faster pace. The problem is NFL owner anticipate having to exclusively finance their own future stadiums and want to get a good portion of the money from the players pool.

by bignerd on Jul 23, 2010 12:42 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah there are so many revenue streams for the league

ticket sales is only a small portion of it. You’ve got apparel, you’ve got the tv deals, you’ve got all sorts of knicknacks like mugs, footballs, etc.

Plus NFL stadiums are multi-purpose. They can be used for a host of different functions to help bring in extra revenue that doesn’t count on the books as NFL revenue since it’s not money earned from football.

I think it's going to take

a temporary extension to get players on the field in 2011. Much like the NBA, I think we saw some new contracts done before the new CBA gets put in place that could potentially prevent players from signing these type of contracts. I don’t think that’s a sign there won’t be a lockout, these players wouldn’t have signed just one-year contracts and owners had to account for that. It’s a sign that NFL owners have a lot of money to spend and will do so regardless of the looming lockout (which I hope does not occur). The League still has to brand itself for 2010 and beyond regardless of a work stoppage threat.

I will gladly eat crow if Brandon Jones does well for the 49ers in 2010.

by Andrew Davidson on Jul 23, 2010 12:45 PM PDT reply actions

I tend to agree

I think we’ll get a temporary extension before the end of the league year and then a new deal will be worked sometime during the sumer of 2011.

Kind of like franchising a player and then working a new deal with him later. The franchise buys some extra time to work things out.

Yeah. It's guaranteed

Even if they find a way around some of it the fact is that most of the guaranteed money is in the form of signing bonuses.

But...

I believe the players get over 50% of the profits as it is now.

Salaries

NBA salary cap last year—$57.7 million. Leaves a profit of $67.8 million

NFL salary cap last year—$128 million. Leaves a profit of $84 milliion

NHL salary cap las year—$59.4 million. Leaves a profit of $34.46 million

As we know there’s no salary cap in baseball so it’s difficult to do any kind of number crunching. Even factoring in player salaries (and remember NBA and MLB salaries are 100% guaranteed unlike NFL salaries) the NFL is still more profitable.

Major Sports Payouts

The Yankees pay players an ave of @ $8.3 mil per player. Pittsburg could field only 4 players if they paid at this rate. Baseball is cooked & NFL owners will (wisely) continue to “collude” to preserve their enterprise.

by BobE on Jul 23, 2010 11:01 PM PDT reply actions

Ross Tucker from SI.com made a good point regarding revenue-sharing issues.

In this article, he outlines how salaries can rise faster than revenue for smaller-market teams.

Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy attributed the decrease primarily to increased player costs, saying they’ve risen at a rate of 11.8 percent annually since the current CBA was negotiated in 2006 while revenues grew at a 5.5 percent clip. He called the current system a non-sustainable model, and he’s right.

It’s not possible on a league-wide level for player costs to increase at twice the rate of revenue, but it can happen on a team-by-team basis because NFL franchises have shared and unshared revenue. Simply put, the large amount of unshared revenue brought in by teams like the Cowboys, Redskins, and Patriots eats away at the profits of smaller market teams like the Packers because it counts toward the total that is used to calculate the salary cap.
