1st Series
1. Up on left side. Avoids first blockers and makes the tackle for no gain. Good play

3. Down on right side, outside of tackle. Nickel defense. Actually has a good bull rush and gets pressure.

2nd Series
1. Left side. Up position. Pushed away from play
2. Left side. Up. Rushes passer and is untouched until the RB picks him up. Should've been able to at least hit Favre
3. Right side. Up position. Nickel defense. Rushes, picked up by tackle and then stunts to the middle. Good solid hit on Favre as he releases the ball. Play nullified due to a holding penalty on Lewis
4. Not in play (Ahmad Brooks subbing)
5. Not in play (Ahmad Brooks subbing)
6. Left side. Up. Tries to run around tackle to get to the running play on the other side
7. Lined up on left side. Man coverage on full back who came out on a crossing pattern. Good coverage. TD pass to Rice who had beat Clements on an inside move

3rd Series
1. Left side. Up. Blocked easily by the tight end on a 3 yard gain
2. Left side. Chip blocks the tackle to get around him. Slows down when he thinks the play is done even though it wasn't over.
3. Right side. 4 pt stance. Nickel defense. Stunts to middle. No pressure at all.
4. Left side. Up. Rushes. Tackel drops back and picks him. Quick out to other side of the field.
5. Left side up. Pushes through a full back block (why can't he do this when it's a pass play?) and knifes through. Nearly has Peterson for a loss but he manages to evade the tackle only to get hit by Clements
6. Right side. Up. Nickel defense. Drops back into zone pass coverage. Ball thrown to other side
7. Not in play (Ahmad Brooks in--Tackles AP for a 7 yard loss)
8. Right side. 4 pt stance. Nickel defense. Stood up and driven back by tackle. Goldson makes tackle
9. Right side. 4 pt stance. Nickel defense. Tries swim move but is pushed out way past Favre.

4th Series
1. Up on left side. Rushes, ineffectiev pressure
2. Left side. Drops into zone pass coverage. Ball thrown to other side.
3. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
4. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
5. Right side. Nickel defense. Rushes and knocks FB down (but also falls down himself). Gets up and kind of jogs over towards the action (this trait infuriates me)
6. Right side. 4 pt defense. Nickel defense. Good rip move. Haralson knocks the pass down

5th Series
1. Left side. Up. Drops back into zone coverage and kind of side-hops over to the middle where the run is
2. Left side. Does a really good job forcing the run outside, but AP is good enough to bounce it back to the middle for a couple yards
3. Right side. Up. nickel defense. Stunts to middle and trips in all the traffic.

6th Series
1. Left side. Up. Drops into man coverage on the tight end. Excellent coverage. Ticky-tack roughing the passer call on Justin Smith
2. Left side. Up. Drops into pass coverage on whomever comes out of the flats. Good coverage.
3. Left side. Up. Rushes. Easily blocked by the tight end
4. Right side. 4 pt stance. Rushes. No pressure. Excellent coverage by Spencer nullfied by a ticky-tack taunting call
5. Left side. Up. Rushes ineffectively.
6. Right side. 4 pt stance. Blocked easily on run play.
7. Right side. Up. nickel defense. Hits the running back, though I don't know why since it was a pass play.

6a_medium

7th Series
1. Right side. Nickel. Down. Rushes, gets blocked out of play by tackle
2. Right side. Up. Nickel. Rushes. Pass is a short screen that he reacts well to and makes the tackle
3. Right side. Rushes and gets no pressure.
4. Not in (Brooks subbing)
5. Not in (Brooks subbing)
6. Left side. Up. Rushes, chipped by the RB on his way out,. Can't get through the traffic to Favre
7. Right side. Up. Nickel. Tries bull rush with no pressure
8. Right side. Up. Nickel. Bull rush again is ineffective
9. Left side. Up. Drops into zone coverage. FB catches ball out of the flat and Lawson makes the tackle
10. Right side. Down. Nickel defense. Tries speed move to get around tackle. Doesn't work so tries spin move and when he sees Favre looking to throw he gives up.

8th Series
1. Left side. Ball run to the other side of the field.
2. Left side. Up. Rushes and is picked up by the RB. Does a good job pushing the RB back and spins around him to force Favre up into Franklin but Lawson ends up on the ground pushed there by the RB. Lawson could've had that sack

8a_medium

3. Lawson on left side. Double-teamed by the TE and the tackle.8b_medium

9th Series
1. Right side. Up. Rushes, but as soon as he sees Favre throw it he stops rushing and jogs over to that side of the field.
2. Right side. Blocked by FB on a running play
3. Right side. Up. Tries speed rush to get past tackle who just pushes him outside the play.

10th series
1. Left side. Up. Blocked by FB on a gain of 2 yards
2. Left side. Up. Blocked again by FB but sheds him to make the tackle. Good play
3. Not in play (Brooks in)

11th Series
1. Left side. Up. Blocked by TE. Ball run to the other side.
2. Left side. Up. Blocked by the TE. Sheds the blocker to make the tackle.
3. Left side. Up again. Two TE set. Blocked again by TE and not able to shed him thsi time
4. Middle of field as a "rover". Delayed blitz that was picked up by the center

12th Series
1. Left side. Up position. Dances around a bit with the TE. Play run to the other side of the field
2. Left side. Up position. TE comes around from other side in motion. Lawson recognizes this as a run play and stands him up and forces the play to the outside. He misses the tackle but it's eventually made by Franklin. Excellent work by Lawson

12a_medium

3. Right side. Down. Dime defense. Stunts to center. No pressure

13th Series
1. Left side. Up. Stunts to center. Tries to find way through. Ball thrown to Chester Taylor out of the flats and Lawson chases him down and delivers a beautiful hit.
2. Right side. down. Nickel defense. Actually gets great pressure again, but ends up on the ground. Forces a quick throw by Favre

13a_medium

3. Right side. Up. Nickel defense. Rushes, picked up by tackle, but gets good enough pressure that Favre starts moving up out of the pocket
4. Left side. Up. Nickel defense. Blitz, call is a screen to the other side.
5. Right side. 4 pt. stance. Nicke. Tries speed rush around right tackle and isn't fast enough
6. Right side. Up. Nickel. Tries speed rush again and slips onto his back.

Comments:

1. Lawson has a tendency to give up. This drives me nuts, especially since every football player has it drilled into him from a young age that the play isn't done until the whistle blows.

2. Doesn't seem to have great awareness. Each game so far he's had at least one play where's bumped into somebody or tripped and ended up on the ground.

3. Does a really good job with pass coverage

4. Still bad in run support despite a couple of good plays, though I think I figured out why he doesn't get that initial hard pop in that's so vital. It almost seems that he's making contact then waiting to see what happens before making his move. Problem with this is that he loses that initial bit of surge that's so critical.

5. I'd forgotten how much of a special teams game this was because the painful memory of Favre. We scored a TD on a blocked FG right before the half (McDonald knifed through to block the FG and Clements scooped it up to run it 70 yards the other way). Minnesota scored a TD on a kick-off right after we'd kicked a FG.

6. This game was painful to re-watch, especially with the offense.

7. I didn't include the last defensive series in this post for obvious reasons.

Overall this week I'd have to give him a B-, which is still quite a jump from the D's of Weeks 1 and 2. He still doesn't get good pass rush, though he improved a bit. He's also easily blocked by TEs and FBs on run plays, and most annoyingly of all he quits on plays. However he did excellent in pass coverage this week, which he saw much more of than he did the first two weeks.

I still get crap from my friends about this game

I called them up talking all kinds of BS to them of how we were winning the game with a minute left and Farve…well you guys know the rest.

Ya still make me sick to see that play.

No

His mind is already made up, so he sees what he is looking for (the cup is half-empty rather than the cup is half-full).

Yeah

I’ve noticed that.
What gives smiley?
From your play-by-play I’d say that Lawson had a very good game. Solid B.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

I gave him a B- for this game

You seemed very harsh in your analysis though

Just because there are a few things that really grate

and even in the solid game he played he still gives up on plays which makes me furious.

We'll see if it improves as the season goes on?

Or if he has improved this season…

Lawson < Brooks

Been a Lawson fan since his first day, probably because of his speed. But where is his pass rush? Keep waiting, and waiting, and ….. . Ahmad Brooks is the man!

by CorneliusJ on Jul 25, 2010 8:31 AM PDT reply actions

I wonder if Lawson was not in football shape by the start of the season

Could explain his lack of awareness and why he is not very physical.

Just one theory because I noticed that PFF ranks Lawson the 9th best 3-4 OLB. I checked it out and it looks like after the Houston game, he becomes much more productive (at least to them). He still has the occasional bad game here and there, but overall, he improves. So I cannot wait to see you do those weeks, Smileyman.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jul 25, 2010 1:48 PM PDT reply actions

He nees to use his length more

there is no reason for him to not get off blocks. Looking forward to future posts though.

I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

I don’t see why the breakdown for manny lawson? He is by far the best olb on the team. Stats don’t lie. If he sucks so bad in getting of blocks or he don’t have good awareness. He wouldn’t be the 5th best tackler on the team. Just 7 tackles less then spikes. The only stat he doesn’t lead out of the olb group is force fumbles. If he suck so bad then what are you saying about the other olb? Manny is getting better every year. Not every star player come out the gate like Willis. Some take years like Steve young. Even the rest of the nfl is seeing it. To bad the fans never happy with his play. I think hes doing a great job and he going to break out any minute now.

by stephenlmock on Jul 27, 2010 1:45 PM PDT reply actions

Because he's by far not the best OLB on the team

he’s probably the worst.

OK

I’ll give you that.

He’s probably not the worst OLB on the team but we’re not exactly stocked with talent at the OLB spot

Still

I sense a strong bias.

Did Lawson’s dog take a crap on your lawn or something?

I suspect my reaction

is as much a reaction to the “Manny Lawson is such a great OLB. What will the 49ers ever do if he doesn’t sign!?!” crowd.

I’ve said all along that I think he’s an average OLB.

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

by smileyman on Jul 30, 2010 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

There are actually people that think Manny Lawson is great?

I’ve said before that I think he’s a solid NFL starting OLB with good qualities.
(I’ve also said before that solid means above average to me)

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"

by SportsChicken on Jul 31, 2010 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Lots of people think he's the best OLB we have

Lots of others think he deserves a much better deal than what we gave Brooks ($2 million per).

Anything more than $3 million a year is too much right now, based on his production. I’d be happier with around $2 million per

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

by smileyman on Jul 31, 2010 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd say $10 mil/3 year deal would be fair.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

I could live with that

$10 million over 3 years with $4 million guaranteed.

by smileyman on Aug 1, 2010 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Question is

Could Manny Lawson live with that?

1. He's a starting OLB

2. He hasn’t lived up to expectations
3. He’s in dispute over his contract and time is pressing

2. He hasn’t lived up to expectations

I call BS.

What exactly do you expect out of the 22nd pick in the draft?
He’s a starting caliber OLB with good/great coverage skills and generally does a good job.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"

by SportsChicken on Jul 30, 2010 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

He's barely starting calibre

he’s an average OLB who might very well hold out for a larger contract because he thinks he’s a great OLB.

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

by smileyman on Jul 30, 2010 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

His contract situation doesn't matter

Every player is going to ask for more money, that has nothing to do with the fact that he’s lived up to expectations.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"

by SportsChicken on Jul 31, 2010 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Um... The same I would expect from the 26th pick?

At least 10 Sacks? Cough Clay Matthews

I mean… I know Cushing was taken at 15… But maybe we can get Lawson some of what he was taking… His rookie stat line makes Lawson’s 5th season laughable. 87 Tackles 5 Sacks and wait Lawson is the great one in coverage? That’s funny cause Cush had 4 ints, (compared to Lawson’s 0) and 2 FF’s (to Lawsons 3).

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jul 31, 2010 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions

INTs =/= good in coverage

Did you really expect Clay Matthews to accumulate 10 sacks and 4 INTs?
Most people I heard talk about him thought he would be a bust.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Because the other OLB's platoon more than him

And yet they put up numbers almost as good. He might be great in coverage but he’s sub-par to average at everything else.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jul 27, 2010 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

They did not put up numbers just as good!

Lawson have 20 more tackles Haralson with less then 100 plus snaps. He can cover much better then others. Haralson side is much more talanted. You have Smith and Willis right next to you. Smith is always doubled and they have to keep a eye out on Willis. Why he didn’t have more sacks? The tight end is mostly lined up on Lawson side. Look at Pit. 3-4. Both of there olb Have 10 plus sacks. Why? Because they both free each other up. You slide the line to the left. The right one kill you. You slide It to the right. The left one kill. They help each other.Lawson need a running mate. Even get him a DE on his side of the feild that demands help or the other OLB need to step up when you have Smith that demands help and leave you with 1 on 1 blocking.

by stephenlmock on Jul 28, 2010 2:06 PM PDT reply actions

49ers OLBs are not comparable with the Steelers OLBs

in your comparison, you are basically saying that teams are keying on Haralson and putting extra pass protection on the left side, while everyone on the right side has 1 on 1 blocking, yet Lawson had a career best 6.5 sacks last season. I say teams are keying on Haralson because he put up 8 sacks in 2008 while Lawson only put up 3. So maybe it is the other way around. The 49ers need to find a running mate for Haralson.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Jul 28, 2010 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Nevermind.

Lawson is lined up on the TE side. Haralson is not. Haralson have Justin smith on his side that demands Double team. I’m I right. Who do lawson have next to him playing DE? Does he demands double team? I don’t know what Manny did to have such small support from fans. But others is respecting him and gladly take him on their team. There are two weak spots on the front seven and lawson is not it.

by stephenlmock on Jul 28, 2010 4:59 PM PDT reply actions

Good. Let him leave

If he thinks he’s worth a big contract with his almighty 6 sacks, WHICH IS HIS JOB AS AN OLB, let him walk. We’ve got somebody better coming off the bench.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jul 31, 2010 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

nice post again

glad you brought up the hustle factor…….hate to say it because it should be drilled in there head by now. But this could be dare i say it a coaching issue. It drove me nuts watching Tully Banta Cain give up on a rush once he got to a RB/FB. I see Parys Haralson give up on plays all the time too. However I don’t see this from Ahmad Brooks ala the fumbles against the cards and lions he caused down the field chasing the play. Lawson and Haralson tend to do this and it drives me nuts!

Can u c coach sing's vision? I do!......We all know PATRICK WILLIS is our future!
