Manny Lawson report card Week 4
1st Series
1. Lined up on left side. Blocked by FB on running play. Sopoaga manages to shed his blocker to make the tackle.
2. Left side. Rushes the passer. Easily picked up by the running back who knocks him to the ground
3. Right side. Nickel. Stunts to middle, ball dumped before he gets there.
2nd Series
1. Left side. Pushed way out of the play by the FB
2. Left side. Up. FB blocks him and ball is run to the other side
3. Left side. Nickel. Drops into man coverage on the TE. Play was a draw so he wasn't involved
4. Right side. Nickel. Drops into zone coverage in the middle. Horrible pass coverage (this is a 3rd and 13) and the middle zone is basically unguarded. He finally chases down Donnie Avery (who isn't known for his quickness) and then misses the tackle. This play gained the Rams almost 20 yards
5. Left side. Up. TE blocks him away from the running play (Lawson seemed to be taking a break on this play--he hardly hits the TE at all)
6. Left side. Up. Haralson shoots the gap on the right side and puts pressure on the QB. Lawson comes into the backfield and is picked up by the LG (weird blocking scheme--It looks like it was a play action fake designed to get the defense to come forward)
7. Not in play (Brooks in)
8. Not in play (Brooks in)
9. Not in play (Brooks make the stop on 3rd on short)
3rd Series
1.Left side. Up. Sweep to the other side. Not able to get into the play

.

1. Left side. Up. Blocke by TE, manages to shed the blocker to make the tackle.
2. Left side. Up. Drops into zone converage on the outside. Ball thrown to deep middle of the field.
3. Right side. Up. Nickel defense. Rushes, does a spin move, sees Boller scrambling and makes the tackle. Good awareness on this play
5th Series
1. Left side. Up. Rushes. Picked up by the FB, but manages to get around him to force Boller to the side and throw the ball away
2. Left side. Up. Gets into the backfield quickly but he was unblocked. Run up the middle
3. Everybody moving around. Nickel defense. Lawson rushes from the left side, quick dump by Boller for a first down
4. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
5. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
6. Front four is McDonald, Smith, Lawson, Balmer. Lawson stunts to the other side of Smith. Gets picked up but does a good job getting his hands in the air to try and deflect the pass (first time I've ever seen him do this)
7. Left side in zone coverage. Run to the middle
8. Right side. Down. Nickel defense. Blocked easily by TE. Ball run to the other side. (Bad leverage by Lawson)
9. Right side. Down. Rushes, quick dump
10. Right side. Down. Nickel. Blocked by tackle--run play originally run that side but Jackson cuts back to the other side. Lawson can't shed the blocker before Jackson gets to the other side of the field.
6th Series
1. Right side. Down. Nickel. Immediately does a stunt to the middle. Boller rolls out and throws the ball away
2. Right side. Down. Nickel. Rushes, pushed out of play by tackle
3. Right side. Down. Nickel. Ineffective rush
7th Series
1. Left side. Up. Blocked by the TE. Coverage is good down field so Boller has to scramble and Lawson gets the sack.
2. Left side. Down. Stretches the field on the run to that side and makes the tackle.
3. Right side. Down. Nickel. Rushes, chip blocked by Jackson, bubble screen to Jackson. Lawson turns around and chases him down. Good play
4. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
8th Series
1. Not in play (Balmer in)
2. Right side. Down. Rushes, gets decent pressure
3. Inside left. Down. Nickel. Rushes, manages to force Boller out of the pocket and into making a throw to the other side of the field where P-52 gets a pick six.
9th Series
1. Left side. Up. Gives look as if in zone coverage, rushes and stretches the play out
2. Not in play (Balmer subbing)
3. Drops into coverage on Jackson. Ball thrown to middle of the field (good coverage)
4. Right side. Down. Nickel. Rushes and is double-teamed. Bly knocks the ball down
10th Series
1. Left side. Down. Does a great job of stretching out the play and then tackling Jackson for a loss
2. Not in play (Ulbrich in)
3. Not in play (Ulbrich in)
11th Series

2. Right side. Down. Blocked by TE on a shortyardage situation and Jackson runs right by him

7. Out of play (Brooks subbing)
8. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
9. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
10. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
13th Series
1. Right side. Blocked by tackle. Run play to the other side of the field.
2. Right side. Drops into middle zone coverage (Willis blitzes and gets the sack)
3. Not in play (Brooks subbing)
1.Lawson had a really good game. He was responsible for two defensive plays that led directly to defensive scores.
2. It seems to take him a bit to warm up to game action. Most of the first quarter he played poorly--it wasn't until the tail end of 1st quarter that he started doing well.
3. The plays he does best at are the ones where he can read and react. He can't rush very well and he still gets manhandled by FBs and TEs. I have to wonder if he'd do better moved to either an ILB spot where he can read and react all day, or as some sort of "rover" LB on the outside.
4. I didn't see him give up on any plays this week, which is a huge gripe I had with him earlier.
5. I give him an A for this game, though it wasn't looking good the first quarter.

This is the stuff that gets you to the pro-bowl.

Manny Lawson report card Week 4 sounds pretty good to me.
Couple of things to keep in mind
1. This was his best game thus far.
2. It was against the worst team in football last year.
If he could have those kinds of plays against the best teams than yeah, you can say Pro Bowl. Problem is that he doesn’t.
He still gets pushed around on the line of scrimmage, whether it’s run blocking or rushing the passer. Both of those plays were long plays.

I was gonna say...
A lot of guys look stellar when playing the Rams. I take it with a grain of salt but it is what it is.

Really Interested
I’m really interested in what your take is gonna be on the falcons game. I haven’t had an opportunity to watch that game since it aired, but I remember it seeming like the only two people on the team that were actually trying to win, were Shaun Hill and Patrick Willis.
Bly's been fairly solid
Clements has been on fire all four games that I’ve watched. All over the field, making great tackles and good coverage for the most part.
Of course he gives up that 90 yard TD to White in the Atlanta game.
The thing that irks me about the Atlanta game is that the defense started out very well, but then fell apart.

What I remember
Like I said, I haven’t re-watched the game, but I seem to remember things like balls being fumbled, and everyone just kinda standing around looking at it. Where as the week before I’m pretty sure someone got their finger bit off in the bottom of a pile to recover a fumble. That was of course after Takeo killed another player with his mind to prevent him from recovering a different fumble. All in all it just seemed like nobody cared enough to try.
- I made all of that up. I know its obvious. I still have to post this disclaimer though. If I didn’t I’m sure I would get at least one poster trying to explain to me that Takeo doesn’t have the power to kill with his mind. Only Pwilly can do that.**
No, I think you're right
I think all the players were on such a high after the great defensive performance against the Rams that they came into the Atlanta game with too much swagger and not enough bite.

ugh
i was at the atl game last year….after clements gambled on the pick six and roman gave him terrible help (angle) over the top he was gone……and Josh Morgan not sprinting all the way into the endzone to light the crowd up.
back to topic manny had a great game….against the rams but hopefully these posts show his steady progress over the season. I think manny doesn’t enjoy contact like he should as a defensive player. Lacks that POP when he brings his rush. Hope he got stronger this offseason, we’ll find out soon enough
Can u c coach sing's vision? I do!......We all know PATRICK WILLIS is our future!

Defensive players need to feed on contact (Unless you're Deion Sanders)
It has to pump their blood pressure up. Even taking on a block and smacking that guy in the chin has to be something that gets them off. I don’t know if Lawson has that.

Nate should be able to gamble
unless they were in straight man and he knew no safeties were over top. Almost no play to the outside should be a TD with deep safeties

I'd like to hear Sing / Manusky in film room
after some of the plays that Manny takes off, gives up early on…that ish don’t fly. That alone is enough for me to send him packing. Dude just seems like he has a chip and not in a good way. He better realize at this point that nobody is going to pay him 5M+ per unless he is the best OLB on the team by far. If Sing can’t motivate the guy…who else will think they really can? Maybe he can go get in fights with the offense in Arizona.

he could be
he has done nothing to separate himself thus far

I couldn't label any of our OLBs the best
Lawson is good in coverage but not so good in run suppport or pass rushing. Haralson is better in run support but not good in coverage or pass rush. We know Brooks is good in the pass rush, but I don’t think he’s been tested enough in coverage to see how he handles that.
