Kentwan Balmer traded to Seahawks

Ninjames' Note: Little late on this, but got this fanpost moved to the front page for now. I'm not happy with this whole thing, myself. Though, I would like to note that "next to nothing in return" is a bit misleading considering WR Kyle Williams and RB Anthony Dixon both came in the sixth round this past draft, and seventh round pick Ricky Jean Francois is vying for a future starting spot at an integral 3-4 position.

According to ESPN.com the 49ers have agreed to trade Kentwan Balmer to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2011 6th round pick. Quite a statement to send a former 1st round pick to a rival for next to nothing in return. He was projected to come in as our backup defensive end, so a bit of depth is lost, but overall the team is not rocked too much by this loss.

Here is the link to the original story

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

but its here, so here comes my comment.

6th rounds picks “near to nothing” that have produced so far this year – dixon, williams. i would have traded bamer for either of those guys in a heartbeat.

also the guy we signed to replace balmer made more of a impact on his first play (sack) than balmer did in his career with the niners.

Do we have two 6th round draft picks next year, now? If so, we could always package them together and then get a 4th round in a draft trade or whatnot. Balmer had no future here. This is way better than cutting him.

We also got a 4th rounder when we traded down to get Bowman.

http://www.csnbayarea.com/08/16/10/Coffees-Retirement-Opens-Roster-Spot/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=291278&feedID=5936

The 49ers have received phone calls from teams to gauge their interest in possible trade scenarios, according to a source. If the 49ers look at unsigned veterans, their top options are Brian Westbrook, Jamal Lewis, Ladell Betts, Kolby Jones, Chris Brown, Kevin Jones and LenDale White.

Hopefully we get Westbrook. He’s really the only one I want right now. None of this trading for Willis McGahee or anything. Most of all, Lawson, Rachal, and a 3rd/4th for Mankins

Dashon, Mays, and Bamm Bamm will get the record for most decapitations in one season

by MichaelClutchtree on Aug 16, 2010 12:52 PM PDT reply actions

No way. Westbrook has no upside left. Lawson (starter), Rachal (starter), and a mid-level draft pick for a running back who will sit on the bench?! No. We have a PRO BOWL running back in Gore. We are replacing Coffee. Glenn “2.7” Coffee. There is no reason to trade the house on this. Dixon has tons of upside and M. Rob. is serviceable to act as the bridge for him to get there.

by WesHanson on Aug 16, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Or for a guard. I missed that Mankins part at the end. Actually, I think I miss-read your post in general… Oops.

mankins isnt a running back. hes a guard. and sure as hell better than rachal who played terribly.

by MichaelClutchtree on Aug 16, 2010 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I know he is a guard. I mis-read your post at first. I do think, however, that my reasoning still stands. Rachal isn’t great, but he hasn’t been the weakest link of this line. This seems like way too steep of a price to fix a mediocre problem, at best. I would love for Briggs to be that good, but frankly, Lawson is such a talented player. That would just create problems. He was our sack leader last year, if I am not mistaken.

by WesHanson on Aug 16, 2010 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Sack leader by half a sack

He barely beat out Brooks as the sack leader when Brooks had only about a third of the playing time that Lawson did. Lawson is not lighting the world on fire with how he plays. The only thing that Lawson does the best out of our OLBs is in pass coverage. If some team wants to make a trade for him, the 49ers would not lose much.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Aug 16, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Aug 16, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

And I am all for Brooks taking over starting reps when he develops, but I don’t think that is this season. Maybe next season or the one after that. Pass coverage is a good reason why. I don’t think we need to replace Rachal yet. If he can’t preform this season, then maybe. Now is too premature.

by WesHanson on Aug 16, 2010 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd rather have a guy that can get to the QB

than a guy that can do an above avg job in pass pro and is just ok everywhere else and plays without much of a motor.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Aug 16, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

As would I, though obviously balance is key. Brooks can get there, but with his whole liver thing, it’s probably not this season. We need Lawson for this season. Any trade talk should come along next season, when his contract is up.

by WesHanson on Aug 16, 2010 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

You can't trade a player who doesn't have a contract with the team

They’d have to franchise or transition him, and that’s dependent on a new CBA being in place.

by 9thevolution on Aug 16, 2010 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

His injury isn't as serious as it sounds

He’ll be back in a couple weeks at most. If it was really bad he’d have gone straight to the ER. Right now its precautionary and letting it heal. This is the type of injury he could have played with but it would have made it worse and possibly turned it serious.

Gimme 1 round!

Except by the Dallas Cowboys, who got a decade of winning football from it...

What did Dallas get, something like 8 or 9 draft choices, including 2 or 3 #1s, for Walker?

After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.

by OldJock on Aug 16, 2010 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Westbrook has no upside left

A 30 year old RB does not need any upside. You get what he has shown and Westbrook has shown that he is a great 3rd down RB who can can catch out of the backfield or stay in to pass block. And I don’t believe that Westbrook is washed up either (not saying that you said he was) because he still averaged 4.5 yards per carry last season. Westbrook would be that shifty RB who adds another element to the 49ers’ backfield.

Right now, I am concerned about how effective Michael Robinson can be and how quickly Dixon can become a pass blocker. I would feel more confident in a veteran RB who is known as being a good pass blocker/3rd down back than continue with just Robinson and Dixon.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Aug 16, 2010 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

No doubt Westbrook is a good player. I would just rather give up a sack now for development of Dixon, especially after what he showed yesterday. Bringing in a big name like Westbrook would just impede the process.

by WesHanson on Aug 16, 2010 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

How would it impede?

You do realize that Dixon will probably not be coming in on third downs right now anyway? He’s too inexperienced for that kind of role. If Gore comes out on a third down, Robinson would be the one to go in.

And a sack is a very bad thing on third down. Screw development, a sack on third down could lose a game. I would rather convert the third down, which could lead to Dixon getting a carry later on in the series. Dixon has time to develop, but it’s more important for the 49ers to win games.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Aug 16, 2010 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I meant more like taking reps in practice. The sack thing was more of a metaphor.

I don't like this trade

Balmer has insight on the niner defense… and of course he will try to tell them as much as possible before they drop this bust. They should have traded him to Buffalo for Lynch. That way we get a great backup and they receive a 3-4 lineman which they are in need. Bad trade!!

I don’t know how much insight Balmer has. This guy doesn’t look that bright and couldn’t crack the starting lineup.

by jobharve on Aug 16, 2010 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Big deal

The Seahawks could have done the same thing by claiming Scott McKillop from the waiver wire, but they didn’t. So big deal if Balmer tells them anything because they at least gave us something for him. And I am not sure why the 49ers would want Lynch. After watching Dixon in the preseason, he’s just as good as Lynch and doesn’t have the off the field issues.

I wonder how much Singletary has to do with that. It seems like every 49er talks about what they can do to get better. However, I do think it would be smart to bring in an experienced third down back just to have that kind of insurance.

I still think it's a win-win situation

For Balmer: He goes to a team where they probably need him more. He’s likely not going to start there, but he should contribute somehow. (Can’t believe I’m acutally making like I care about this guy! :P)

For us: Yeah we don’t get a backup RB, but Dixon is not exactly chopped liver! We get a sixth rounder, and yeah a good portion of draft picks are hit and miss, but we’ve generally been hitting fairly well with guys coming out of that round.

two top-half 6ths

get’s you into the bottom half of the 4th, so 1.5 rounds moved up.

a top-half 5th and top-half 6th get’s you middle of the 4th.

Two 6ths and a 5th gets you into the top half of the 4th.

In these cases you would keep your original 4th too, so that’s good.

Now to the backup RB position. We should get someone to be a 3rd stringer. I think Dixon can handle the backup responsibilities. Hes a big body that has plenty of agility to make people miss and has the strength to stiff arm people to the ground!

it’s an exponential drop off of points as you go down. So, you’d need a bunch of 6th rounders to get a 4th or even a 5th pick. It’s nearly impossible to get a 1st rounder without trading a future 1st rounder.

draft pick value chart:

turns out a mid-4th and two mid-6th rounders can’t even get you into the 3rd round.

is it just me

or is trading down a better value than trading up based on these charts.

by these3words on Aug 17, 2010 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

yes

depends on what you want…and where are you trading down to from the 6th round (for instance, since that was the original context as we have several late round picks in 2011)

Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Tedd Ginn/Delanie Walker, Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook...which one is getting the ball and where?

Dixon

…sho looked nice yesterday….BUT! Tre9 was right on when he said the kid can’t block. I saw him miss a block and miss an assignment early on. not coincidentally, they didn’t keep him in on protection again.

he’s gonna need some time and reps. we definitely need a sevicable third down back for that extra roster spot.

by t p on Aug 16, 2010 2:16 PM PDT reply actions

Actually he made a couple good blocks later on. He is learning

The question I have is that he was favoring his leg. I wonder if he has a problem that may make us having another RB a priority.

He was projected to come in as our backup defensive end, so a bit of depth is lost, but overall the team is not rocked too much by this loss.

R u frickin kiddin me?????

This was a COMPLETE WASTE of a 1st rd draft pick.

Could’ve had Desean Jackson and many others instead.

Thank Bc Boo Foo again. They should’ve strung this guy up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why signing Westbrook was the right call...

Folks, I believe Anthony Dixon is going to be a solid player in this league, and as Gore moves past his prime in the next couple seasons, Dixon will be one of the players replacing him as part of a RB tandem.

That said, let’s not get too hasty after yesterday’s pre-season game; I like a lot of what I saw out of the kid, but remind yourself who led ALL pre-season running backs in rushing yards last Fall….fella by the name of Glen Coffee. Just sayin’…

I’m not mad we traded Balmer to Seattle, I am mad that he sucked, and was worth trading to Seattle…

i'm mad he can tell pete carroll our whole defensive scheme

thats why seattle wanted him they got our whole defensive philosophy for a 6th round pick and the fact that we could have had desean jackson just erks me. as for westbrook not having no upside whoever said that was sick! westbrook may be injury prone but he’s a heck of a back. he’s a C.O.P back and a vet at that. he can do for anthony dixon and gore what bruce did for morgan and others. I love the acquisition. people give up on players I bet tomlison tear things up this year

by RBoogy29 on Aug 16, 2010 5:50 PM PDT reply actions

someone else (i forget who) made a great point

about Balmer telling the Seahawks our defensive scheme. they could have claimed Scott McKillop off injury waivers and kept their sixth round pick.

if our scheme was that big of a secret, someone would claim every defensive player we ever cut and the secret would get out. we cut players all the time, so it’s obviously not that big of a deal.

Don’t players sign some sort of affadavit saying that they can’t actually reveal playbooks or something? Hell, what about practice squad players and whatnot? Wouldn’t the Pats and Colts just take each others players every year then?

you have to elevate a PS player to the 53 in order to sign them from another team

Right, but if a player could give away all the secrets, you’ve got to think it’d be worth it.

I don’t know the inner-workings of the NFL, though, so I could be completely wrong.

There might be confidentiality clauses in player contracts

but I doubt it.

Besides the Seahawks already have Ulbrich who’s going to have a much better line on the 49er defense than Balmer

I agree with you on Westbrook...

but I think LT is running out of excuses. If he can’t turn in an impressive year behind the Jets O-Line, then the whispers about him being over as a special player are true.

As to who Balmer could have been, it would be sweet to have had DeSean Jackson, but every now and then, I wish he had been Ray Rice.

I might as well say it...

I knew he was going to suck when we drafted him. For him to be our 1st rd pick just made it even worse, I have never had any personal issues with the guy, just issues with his ability to play ball.

by crumpedup15 on Aug 16, 2010 6:24 PM PDT reply actions

I love this trade

I wish him the very best in life, but in reading some of the comments that his own former teammates had about him, I’m willing to conclude that as a football player he won’t be a success story in Seattle. When you crumble and don’t respond (with your play) to people who are literally calling you a bust during practices, you’re probably not going to do much else on Sundays when the lights turn on.

(Sorry, but) Fans who think it was a bad idea to trade him to a team within the same division are only fooling themselves. Balmer won’t be successful there. If anything, he just might cause problems. If the Seahawks believe this guy has lots of “upside”, whatever that means, then they’ll likely experiment with him by actually giving him playing time during the regular season. This will 1) take away playing time from a better player, and 2) disrupt any chemistry that the team is trying to build because of his poor play. In other words, this trade works in the 49ers’ favor.

Okay, okay, I’m really jumping the gun here (as I always do), but I’m sure it’ll play out similar to what I explained above. The guy sucked as a player, and will continue to suck. Matt Maiocco once said on knbr, “You know, I was watching him the entire time he was in the game, and boy, I tell ya’, he has a hard time moving people.” But we don’t need a team’s beat-writer to tell us the obvious, do we?

I’m not disappointed in the least over this trade. I am, however, still disappointed that they passed up on Desean Jackson to draft him. The 49ers had been complaining about not having a play-maker for Smith, and yet when the ultimate play-maker was available for the taking, they went against the grain and drafted a lethargic lookin’ brothah whose only career highlight was making it on the Second Team All ACC in 2007. Meanwhile, Jackson was runnin’ wild at my alma mater, gaining national attention, and garnering consideration for the heisman.

Ouch.

It’s ya boi,

Waiting4JoshMorgan

p.s. I still don’t believe he will until he shows me, but for what it’s worth…….. GO ALEX! (absolutely luv his character, but not his game)

You’re greatly overestimating the talent level of the Seahawks defensive line.

ouch...

They’re really that bad?

Surely, you had to have seen Balmer in action… I felt sorry for the guy.

I’ll quote a fellow 49ers blogger who had the following to say about Balmer: “Horrible DT, excellent KR.”

thanks for the funny response, fearless.

10 picks next year, already.

anyone know if we are likely to get any compensatory picks?

and I bet both of them will do a good enough job to get us compensatory picks.

we also lost:

walt harris (ravens) tony pashos (browns) and marcus hudson (panthers).

any chance of getting a pick for one of those three?

i just looked up

the browns depth chart and he is listed as their starting right tackle.

so we could be looking at 13 draft picks next year.

Good Call

I wonder if Harris and Hudson count. Harris didn’t play last year (really, he isn’t playing so far this year) and I can barely remember Hudson on the team.

Pashos will definitely bring in a compensatory pick.

Good bye Balmer on the field you were.... Umm.. AWOL

Glad we got rid of him. Obvisiously didn’t want to be on the team. Wouldn’t want those type of players on my team anyways. To me he actually could have been a better magician then a football player cuz he performed that invisible trick on the field really well. I could never find him anywhere. He wouldn’t do a damn thing lol. In Seattle it will be more of the same. He will be in minimal plays and do not a damn thing in those plays he’s in. Garaunteed!
