49ers Training Camp: David Baas and Dominique Zeigler FTW
Coach Mike Singletary spoke to the media today and he made an assortment of interesting comments that are worth pulling out from the transcript posted after the jump. A lot of times we don't get a lot of insight as Coach Singletary seems to play things close to the vest.
Arguably the most significant comments related to David Baas and Dominique Zeigler. As to Baas, Singletary said:
On whether G Tony Wragge is still in competition to replace C Eric Heitmann:
"Well, yes. I think he is, but the fact that [guard David] Baas had a really good showing last week; the thing that we wanted to know was if Baas could do it. And it's just one of those things where you never really know until you get in the game and Baas just really handled himself really well. He handled the calls really well, the protections, he snapped the ball with ease. So there was a lot of comfort in that. So yes, [guard Tony] Wragge is still in that, but at the same time I think Baas did a really nice job last week and hopefully we can continue to go forward with that."
While Singletary hasn't completely ruled Tony Wragge out of the starting center position, it's safe to say, based on these comments, that David Baas has a sizable lead in the battle for the starting center role. It would seem to take something pretty bad to remove David Baas from the starting center role.
What I found interesting about this media session was that Coach Singletary had a lot to say about Dominique Zeigler. While Zeigler is apparently going to be nothing more than an emergency option as a punt returner, he has done enough in all aspects of the wide receiver position that it seems like we should be fairly surprised if he doesn't make the roster. Maybe not stunned, but at least a little bit surprised.
Head Coach Mike Singletary
Post-Morning Practice - August 19, 2010
San Francisco 49ers
On whether he was trying to get the players' emotions going today:
"No, actually it's a combination of things. Linebackers, particular our young linebackers, normally when they come in from college, they haven't worked a lot of man coverage. And we have talked about man coverage. We have gone through some of the technique, but it's just getting out of a habit, and the habit that they have, they are trying to cover a guy and at the same time look back at the quarterback because that's basically what they've done in college. So just trying to get them to break that habit and the only way you can do that is just repetition and constantly reminding you can't do that at this level. If you've got man-to-man coverage, cover the guy, and that's all."
On him being loud toward the players:
"Yeah, it's is one of those things that can get you killed. If you're on a guy, some of these young guys we may have to depend on this year, so they don't have a lot of time. They have to make sure that they are ready to go and they really focus on getting good reps at it, and really the only way you can do that is after practice, or either before practice. That's the only way you're really going to get it as a young guy."
On what he has seen from undrafted players LB Keaton Kristick and LB Mike Balogun:
"They're competitive. I think they work hard. I think Mike is the kid that comes from a really different football background. He played played at junior college, played at Oklahoma, played at just an organized situation that was looked upon as a semi-pro team. He hasn't played a lot of football, so he has a lot to do early by trying to get in some good habits. The other kid from Oregon, I just think he has to continue to play more inside. He'd be an inside guy for us. And he was the guy -- more of a rover kind of guy -- that just ran to the football. So just trying to get him technique as quickly as we can and get him up to speed."
On whether the release of WR Brandon Jones affects WR Ted Ginn:
"You know what it's really, the thing in that decision, it was just a matter of trying to help him go on and get on with another team. [Wide receiver] Dominique [Ziegler] has had a nice camp as [wide receiver] Ted Ginn has had a nice camp. So I just think it was good, it was good timing to go ahead and let Brandon look for another team."
On whether he would consider WR Zeigler as a punt returner:
"You know, he's more of an emergency guy for us, but I know there are a couple of things about Zeigler. He is a very dependable guy; he has been up to this point. So its certainty a situation which if we had to we would."
On Zeigler's willingness to go across the middle and make a catch:
"He is a unique guy. He is very unselfish and he doesn't mind going across the middle, going underneath, doing some of the dirty work. He is a guy that does everything for us. He wears a lot of different hats. He can play any of the receiver positions, gives us some flexibility and he's really good on special teams as well. So he gives us flexibility at that position."
On QB Nate Davis' progression:
"I think Nate, he is a work in progress. I think, you know, you come out here that's the beauty of him. You come out here in a situation in practice, a very controlled environment. He does well. But in a game, in a game, the situation we put him in, he's done pretty well. But we want to put him in the game in a situation where he's playing against a little better competition earlier in the game and see how he fairs that way. But the protection part of it, just learning where the fire is coming from, that's the point that he has to get to. He has to be able to do that on the move. So far we're just working at it, so we'll see how it works."
On whether QB Nate Davis will get in early in the Vikings game on Sunday:
"Hopefully this game. It's possible, just as early as we can."
On whether he wants to see QB Nate Davis play without gloves:
"I don't really care whether plays with gloves or not, I just want him to be effective. But if gloves make him feel better, it has nothing to do with picking up protection, it has nothing to do with anything else, he throws a nice ball with or without them. So that's up to him."
On whether quarterbacks can be effective with gloves, such as former Bears QB Jim McMahon:
"Yes, he did wear gloves."
On when TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree will be fully ready to go:
"No, we're going to take it one day at a time. This is preseason. We're not going to rush them back; we're just going to continue to communicate with the doctor and the trainers, as well as the players. When they're ready, I think the time will work itself out."
On whether he's expecting TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree not to play Sunday against the Vikings:
"I don't know, it's just a day to day situation"
On CB Nate Clements:
"He's doing fine. He's just continuing to do some of the small things that I really think can separate him from being a very good cornerback, and that's just the detail of his position. I think that's really the determining factor going forward. I just think he has to continue to work on all the little details of playing that position and I think he'll do just fine.
On the amount of practice necessary for RB Brian Westbrook:
"Well, I think that's something that will play itself out, but I always believe that in order to be effective you have to practice some. I know that he didn't practice a whole lot there with the old team, we knew that and we understood that, him coming in. But I just want to make sure that he practices enough in the new system where he's able to pick it up and get the timing down and he knows exactly what he's doing."
On whether Westbrook will play this weekend against the Vikings:
"I don't know. I'm in no rush to get him on the field. I think the young guy we have, [running back Anthony] Dixon, I want to continue to get him all the reps that we can. I want to continue to work [running back] Michael Robinson in some, and we'll just see where it goes."
On where S Reggie Smith is now compared to the beginning of his career:
"I see a more confident player. I see a player that really is beginning to understand what we're trying to do on the backend, all of the little detailed things. You know, once again the word detail comes up a lot and that's the thing that we're stressing. We have to know what exactly we're doing; we have to know exactly what the calls are, exactly who we're working with. We can't be guessing. What I've seen in Reggie this year, even starting in OTAs, was just a confidence factor. I think sometimes it takes guys a little bit longer than some others. Some guys, they come in as rookies and they're ready to go; other guys it takes them a little longer and I really like what I see in him."
On S Taylor Mays working into the No. 3, dime role:
"We're just going to let everything work itself out. I think every day we come out here, the players know that we're constantly evaluating them and we're not going to play any favors. We just want the best players on the field at all times, and if Taylor Mays fits the situation a little bit better, then he's going to be on the field. If Reggie Smith fits that, then he's going to be on the field, so it's great competition back there and it's a good problem to have."
On whether he likes players like LB Patrick Willis and RB Frank Gore matching up in practice:
"Yes I do. Yes I do because I am a sharpened iron. I think [linebacker] Pat [Willis] is continuing to work on his third-down skills, in terms of his man-to-man coverage, and of course [running back] Frank [Gore] doesn't think that anybody can cover him, particularly a linebacker, so that's always a great matchup to see."
On whether he will treat the Vikings game on Sunday as more than simply a preseason game:
"No. I think it's important to show people what we want them to know about our team September 12. During the preseason we're just going to continue to evaluate. We know it's a preseason game. I'm not going to go out and try to win a game at the expense of what we're trying to do. We just want to be ready by the first game of the season because that's when it counts and that's the thing we're staying focused on."
On WR Bobby Guillory:
"He's struggling a little bit. He's got a lot of nervous energy about him; just trying to get him to settle down a bit. Hopefully he has the chance to return a punt in this game. I just want to see him with the ball. You know, ‘let me see what you can do with the ball.' And so, hopefully that situation comes up this weekend."
On whether he thinks QB Alex Smith is frustrated because TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree can't take snaps at the moment:
"No, I don't. I think with Alex, it's just a matter of him continuing to get in a groove with the guys that we have. Obviously, he would want [wide receiver Michael] Crabtree on the field, you'd want [tight end] Vernon Davis on the field, but they're not there so you're not going to sit over there and whine about it; you're going to go out there and practice and try to get better. There are a lot of things that he can do as a quarterback to get better that have nothing to do with Vernon and Crabtree."

Another use...
F[site decorum] The World… more aggressive, yet decidedly less clean.
"Three man rush, and Young stumbles on the way back and fires up the middle - pass is caught by Owens! Owens made the catch!"
"HO-HI-HO-HUAHA!"

It's interesting how the meaning has changed...
When I was in my teens and 20s, thugs and crazies got themselves tattooed with “FTW”. They understood it to mean “F—- The World”. Now they find themselves with “For The Win” tattoos, although guys with FTW tattoos probably haven’t been doing too much of that.
LOL
That is exactly what comes to my mind every time I see it. Then I forget what the internet geeks meant it to mean.

Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Tedd Ginn/Delanie Walker, Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook...which one is getting the ball and where?
Let's talk on Twitter
We could have 6 WR on Roster
Kyle Williams could be that 6th guy with Ziggy making it too. I don’t see a problem with it cause Williams is the punt returner. They had Rosum on the Roster as a return guy even though he never played CB. So having Williams and 6 total WR on the team is not far fetched.
Kyle Williams will be the fourth guy on.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
Media is making out Zig to be the 4th guy. I guess once your the 4,5,6 guy it really doesn’t matter as long as you make the team, it’s more of what role will you play as opposed to your depth number.
KW and Ziggy will be the fourth and fifth and fifth and fourth
I think they will see about the same time on offense, Ziggy perhaps a tad more

You think Hill will make the roster????
I don’t see it happening. We have other guys to play special teams and he’s never contributed much on the field.

Watching the Atl vs NE game....
and no more than 2 seconds into the opening kickoff, stupid Joe Buck mentions the “F” word…so annoying, retire already lol
we are gonna hear the "F" word a lot on Sunday...
“F—— gets sacked!!!”
“F—— knocked to the ground!!!”
“F—— is hurried and has to throw the ball away!!!”
“F—— going deep…intercepted!!!”

I gotta say that in my opinion
Coach Sing is the most honest coach in all of professional sports; the dude doesnt lie or mislead anyone, he just says what he honestly believes and thats the end of it. I’m so proud that he’s our coach
One of the things I like the most about the coach.
And something the players really like about him is he doesn’t put on airs. He is a straight forward dude. In the computer world, we call it WYSIWYG (Pronounced Wizzi-WIG) Which stands for What You See Is What You Get. Well, Coach Singletary is certainly a WYSIWYG Kind of man. People naturally respect those types of people because they are authentic and have altruistic agendas. The players feel like he is on their side. The media feels like he is being straight forward with them. And the fans generally trust his honesty if not his ability. Although I think he is a very good coach and has done well to change the culture in the locker room in San Fran. The minute he took over the players played harder for the man. You can tell by the way the players talk about him and through their actions that they honestly like playing for the man. So I am glad he is the coach and I hope he succeeds. I even get the feeling that free agents prefer to come and play for Singletary for the closeness of the locker room that has come to be as a result of the leadership that Singletary has provided.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
props for using WYSIWYG
in comparison to a football coach…though I think Sing might kill you for it…

Ziggy post and he is no where to be found. Maybe he has taken the high road and is secured that Zeigler has made the final roster and this is not news.

Did you guys see Blount?
He punched one of his teammates at practice!!
hahahahahahaha
Remember Michael Westbrook on the Redskins?
He had all the physical tools and most of the skills to be a great WR, but apparently no self-control. Fights in camp, and defensive players could readily push him into giving up 15-yard fouls. Blount looks like Westbrook, part II. No football future, I’m guessing.
yea don't really have a problem with Blount.
If it happens on the field then there should be a cause for concern. Not the first time it’s happened in practice and it won’t be the last.
by Iupati_like_its_1999 on Aug 19, 2010 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions
The problem I see...
Is that I doubt Blount will keep it confined to practice. Maybe, like Romanowsky, or Kyle Turley or somebody like that, Blount can make enough good plays to make up for the 15-yard unsportsmanlikes and the occasional ejection he’s going to pick up. That’s not where my money is going, though.
Just wondering in light of what happened with him last Sunday
Why is Bobby Guillory on the team? Even if he stuck, he wouldn’t be anything more than PR. Even with KW’s injury, there seems to be a bit more depth at WR than at CB right now. Why don’t they bring a guy like Vann back and see if he can at least compete while KW is out.
Yeah I know I’ve been on a soapbox about this. I just want to see what the guy can do in an NFL game, albeit not an official one. :P

obviously showed nothing in camp. I imagine they brought Guillory in to see if he’s worth stashing on the PS and to fill out the camp roster.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
I really think they should have brought LRV back for a few weeks
he’s going out of his mind without football right now and I think he would have been worthy of stashing on the PS or taking one of the other expendable roster spots.

what's the harm in rostering him until KW comes back at least?
none of the other guys are realistically good PR’s so taking their reps isn’t going to be a big deal. Ginn drops punts every day, Smith is too key for the defense (my take) and Zeigler figures to play a role on kickoff and in the WR rotation. Besides LRV could play emergency CB role, especially if they only keep 4 CB’s besides him.

I tend to agree
I don’t know why they didn’t give him at least one pre-season game to see what he had.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
I think
that they bring these guys to see if they can play, Doh…..what i mean is, if the starting PR gets hurt, can Vann or Bobby come in off the street as a FA and pick up the slack, I think
As awesome at the youtube video of Vann returning punts looked...
It must not have shown up in practice. He must have really botched his chance to be let go when the team was still looking for a return man. I sorta hope he doesn’t catch on someplace else and become an all star return man. That would be depressing…
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
to be clear
Vann didn’t drop any punts after OTA’s finished. He caught everything in camp. I know you didn’t say he dropped them in camp but some people are gonna say “he dropped punts all the time”. He worked his butt off and got better.

I am certainly glad to hear that Baas is doing well.
I was very worried when Heitmann went down. I thought it would be a huge blow to an offensive line that was already in flux. It would seem that Baas has moved right in and fit in as well as can be expected. That is great because when Heitmann gets back, we will have a good backup for the center position. And while Heitmann is out, hopefully we wont miss a beat to start the season. There is enough happening on the O-Line now with the rookies trying to get up to speed and learn their positions as well as learn their team mates on the line and their tendencies. Coach Solari and Coach Brown must be doing an awesome job. I am excited to see them play against a very good defensive front. The Vikings have as good a defensive line as there is in the whole league. I cant wait to see how the rookies play on the line and how Dixon is able to do running the ball against a legit defensive team. So far the surprise of camp has to be the play of Dixon. He really ran with power and surprising speed and quickness against the Colts. I hope he does well again this Sunday.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

On a different note, on screen passes
Mike Tanier of FO compiled a list on the usage of screens to WR by teams.
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/column.aspx?sport=NFL&columnid=260&articleid=35949
Niners ranked 6th BUT as he wrote:
“The Niners used receiver screens the way other teams use draw plays: as 3rd-and-long surrender flags. Michael Crabtree was a 11-of-12 on screens for a whopping 28 yards; many of the screens came on 3rd-and-16 plays just after he joined the team, so they should be filed in the “let’s get the rookie a touch” category. Josh Morgan was 10-of-12 on receiver screens for 64 yards. The Niners may want to rethink how they use this particular tactic."
Need improvements here. Maybe Williams can help.
Crabs
made a living on that bubble screen. It wasn’t called at the right time though, was called too often, and was poorly executed (not by Crabs, by others)
