Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

Roster projections: Fluid flux!

So it seems the risers and fallers have slightly changed since last week following the Vikings game on Sunday.  We had some standout performances by a few bubble players that may have helped their cases provided they can continue to show up from here on out.  Let's see what I've got right now with highlighted players as potential cuts (I'm at 54 players here)

Photobucket

Star-divide

Brit Miller wasn't given any reps at FB and on top of that, he missed a tackle on special teams and was called for a penalty.  Perhaps his ankle is affecting him...maybe next week he'll have a stellar performance...but the tide tells me as of now he's off the roster in favor of Byham.

Nate Byham played well on offense, catching three passes for the second consecutive (preseason) game.  He also looked pretty good in the blocking game and played a lot of special teams too, most notably after the big hit that sent him out of the game for a while.  Still with a few other developments I wouldn't be completely shocked if Byham doesn't make the roster either.

Travis LaBoy had no choice but to have a big performance if he wanted to be mentioned in the 53-man roster competition at OLB.  Diyral Briggs has been showing up in practice AND in games thus far and Sunday was no exception.  Still LaBoy had three QB hits and a sack while practically living in the offensive backfield during his time on the field.

As I mentioned, Briggs had another strong day with a few pressures and a sack of his own, further strengthening his case for a roster spot.  If the team keeps nine LB's (five OLB's, four ILB's) however it will push someone off the roster and thin out another position.

Another strong performance was turned in by Philip Adams as he showed how physical he is both in run support and in defending passes.  I think he's a sleeper pick over Will James for the 5th CB spot, if it exists.

That could push Curtis Taylor off the roster, who had a quiet game and allowed the big run by Joe Webb late in the game.  Taylor should have diagnosed the play from his deep safety position and taken a good angle to stop or slow Webb down.  Instead Webb ran right up the seam of the defense untouched for a very long TD.

Thus far it appears there is a lot of depth at defensive line and linebacker.  I could see 17 guys making it in those two positions alone...though it probably wont be that high of a number.  The players who are able to make it to the practice squad will be an interesting story to follow come cut-time.

Also keep in mind with Heitmann down for just a handful of weeks now the team will likely keep an extra offensive lineman until that time as well.

So who do you think has the best shot of making it to the practice squad and surviving there until we are able to call them up?  Do you think that will happen when Heitmann comes back or will the team keep the extra OL (since most of the guys don't have PS eligibility)?

If anyone's still reading this

I think it’s because some people have “narrow” columns selected, and some have “wide” selected. If you look just to the right of the table you made in the post, there’s the first box in the sidebar (where it says “The only blog that enjoys VD and Crabs!”, and “Welcome Guide”, and all that). There are also a couple buttons that say Narrow and Wide, just click on Wide and everything should show up.

considering

the team runs a 3-4, I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch, especially if Brooks can put his hand in the dirt in Nickel situations. I think it’d be more likely to see 7 DL and 8 LB though.

Several of our OLB's are converted DE's

We all know Smith can slide into DT from DE when we change to a 4-3 set if we don’t flat out bring in RJF now that he’s got some reps and showed us all something.

Actually do we have any OLB’s that were not DE’s in college other than Brooks?

by Dave R. on Aug 23, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Almost every OLB in a 3-4

is a converted DE. There’s just not enough colleges running a 3-4 to draft a pure OLB

Yeah what I'm thinking

2 at each spot. An injury would change things, but I don’t see them keeping more than 1 backup on the line rotation.

Briggs and LaBoy I think both make it at this point, and we’ve seen Briggs with his hand down quite a bit game 1 pre season.

by Dave R. on Aug 23, 2010 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

45 Active roster, who are the 8 sitting?

Not easy for me to come up with a full 8.
1) Davis
2) Dixon (Use Robinson/Westbrook to finish the game, then activate Dixon as backup next game imo)
3) Wragge
4) Wilhelm or Bowman, leaning Bowman to start with, Wilhelm after the bye.
5) Briggs or LaBoy might be match up specific
6) Taylor
7) Snyder? Baas and Boone gives a backup at ever line spot.
8) Ziegler, Williams has Special Teams value.

Good job putting this together. My guess at this point is that LaBoy, Brigss or Taylor are let go, with the latter two PS eligible (I think). If that’s the case, I say let Taylor go and hope he makes the PS. You can never have enough pass rush.

by SpurredOn on Aug 23, 2010 2:15 PM PDT reply actions

Taylor isn’t PS eligible i don’t think cause he played in enough games in 2009 but I’m not in front of computer right now to veriy…90% sure tho. Still I think a db has to go. As you said, “can’t have too many pass rushers” which I’d include both DL and LB’s in that category

according to him, Taylor DOES have PS eligibility… (his complete list of PS-eligible veterans: Nate Davis, Curtis Taylor, Jehuu Caulcrick, JJ Finley, Diyral Briggs, Cody Wallace, Brian de la Puente, Ricky Jean Francois, Brit Miller, Derek Walker, and Alex Boone). As we’re all aware, several of those players would be snatched up in a heartbeat if we tried to PS them…

Right now I’d keep off Bynam (PS), Wragge (cut), and C. Taylor (future Seahawk). Add in Robinson & Sims. Looks like to many tackles on my roster but I cannot Singletary willing to put his season the line with Boone over Sims as backup LT. I think the team keeps Boone occupied one more season trying him out as guard in practice.

Boone is tall for a guard

But Smith is a tall QB so we’re A-ok. The Pack are doing it with Bulaga. He’s all over the place, back-and-forth between guard and LT. Starts at Guard, then switched over to LT when Clifton left their last game, then went back to guard to give the 3rd string LT some reps.

I would bet on 9 players in the secondary

And we might see Adams edge out Paymah as the last corner. Paymah may have experience and ST value, but the team could say they’re comfortable enough with Adams staying on as a corner who’ll likely never be used in a regular play.

Either WIlhelm, Robinson, Mitchell, Wragge or Taylor will have to be cut.

I know everyone loves Robinson as a ST player but with 3 good RBs and Byham as a TE/FB I think Robinson may be the odd man out.

Once Heitmann comes back Wragge won’t be needed so they could cut someone and put them on the PS until then. But who would you chance that way?

"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"

Another possibility is to Trade Franklin once he signs and let RJF and Mitchell take over NT.

Mitchell and Sopoaga both can play both DE and NT so they have pretty good coverage on the DL without Franklin. They could also get a pretty good future draft pick by trading Franklin now.

This is a possibilty

but the question still remains how many total DL will the team keep? They could want to retain 7 like they did last year. Mitchell could probably survive the PS this year and then be brought in next to compete for a spot.

by 9thevolution on Aug 24, 2010 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

not a team in the league will trade for a guy in the last year of his contract.

yeah the LB thing is a tricky one

We don’t have depth at ILB but we have lots at OLB. Do we only keep 3 ILBs and if an injury happens pick up someone off the street?

Or do we keep an OLB who we think can move inside? I would really like to see if Lawson can play ILB—I think his skill set makes him better at that position than at OLB in a 3-4.

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

by smileyman on Aug 25, 2010 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

If you only keep 3 ILBs on the 53, then you MUST keep at least one ILB on the PS.

Thus, the PS becomes “the street” off which you pick up another ILB in case of injury to one of the three that started on the 53. That way, they come in knowing the system from day 1 and can step in immediately.

They will keep an OL and TE so that will probably be De La Puente and Finley will probably be on the PS.

by Beatclash on Aug 23, 2010 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

It could come down to cutting one of the following:

- 1 of either Wilhelm or Bowman
- 1 of the safeties (most likely Taylor)
- 1 of the D-Linemen (what about Evans? He seems like someone that’s replaceable)
- 1 of the O-Linemen, though that’s a tough choice, but putting Boone on PS might be best choice.

I think Byham would be taken just like Pascoe was last year if he were put on the PS, I though LaBoy might have played his way onto the team last Sunday, and man, these injuries to Brooks and Heitmann are killing us for the 53-man crunch. Get healthy, dangit!

we would have to trade him to a good team that needs a NT to get over the hump. and i’m not convinced we could get a first rounder from any team for a guy on a one-year contract.

Mitchell would not make it to PS

RJF was put on the 53-man roster last season not because he was ready to play but there is no chance of stashing away a defensive linemen. Its such a position of need that any prospect that shows a pulse automatically makes a 53-man roster or he’s going to another team.

this

Honestly I feel the same way about Tukuafu. I know he was a FA before we signed him but now there’s a couple of games on him showing off that motor…I’d hate to lose him for Evans. I know Evans is solid, veteran…just a tough decision.

Evans has been very quiet

but he did notch a sack last week.

it's laughable to suggest that bowman might get cut.

you don’t cut 3rd round picks as rookies. ever.

also, bear pascoe got put on the giants practice squad because we didn’t bother putting him on ours. he would never have been claimed if he was on our PS; to do that a team would have had to give him an actual roster spot.

I think Evans is very replaceable.

He’s probably the weakest link if we were to give them a 1-99 score with the least long term upside.

Gimme 1 round!

Narrow vs. Wide

when I put it on “Narrow” all I get is massively larger grey bars on either side…just shrinking the width of everything I see…making me have to scroll more and move my eyes more to keep going to the next line. Lame. James is a fool.

calling it now: no way curtis taylor gets cut.

the 49ers kept 11 DBs last year and 12 the year before. the last time they kept less than 10 was 2005. so it’s almost a lock that at least 5 CBs will make the team, and 5 safeties will make it unless 6 CBs are on.

that probably means:
CB – Shawntae Spencer, Nate Clements, Tarell Brown, Karl Paymah, Phillip Adams
S – Dashon Goldson, Michael Lewis, Reggie Smith, Taylor Mays, Curtis Taylor

just like in your projection, except without the ridiculous theory where curtis taylor might get cut.

I saw this too

average over last 4 years was about 10.5 DB’s per season. 5 safeties, 5 CB’s…

still, the team has more depth at LB and DL than in the past…and a need for another OL due to Heitmann’s injury

The issue this season is the 49ers will be giving away a OLB if they don’t roster five of them. They have tried to store their #3 RB on the PS, won’t work this year and have more offensive linemen to keep in the fold.

Does anyone know if Bruce Davis is PS eligible?

I have a feeling he’s either 53-man or out of job. He’s showed spark, at least enough to give him another year of development.

by bignerd on Aug 24, 2010 2:02 PM PDT reply actions

i think he's PS eligible for one more year.

but wikipedia wasn’t totally clear on that.

by these3words on Aug 24, 2010 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I think this is his last year of eligibility

You have 3 years that you can be put on the PS from when you’re drafted. Any season you dress for 6 or more games, or if you dress for 6 or more games cumulatively you’re not eligible.

He was drafted in 2008, so that gives him the 2008 season, 2009 season and this season before he’s no longer eligible.

You mean start Smith and Goldson with Mays and Taylor as the backups?

I like that idea.

by Eastbayjim on Aug 24, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

No

You won’t see any of that, you won’t see the 49ers trading any veterans either.

Everyone in the front office knows they have to make the playoffs this season. It’s the expectation, it’s been a long time coming and Jed has to raise funding to build his stadium. Anything less than playoffs could trigger a massive overhaul. They aren’t trading any proven veterans for upcoming unknowns when the difference between success and failure could be one play in one game.

if any team would do that

it would definitely be the raiders.

I've been thinking it's remotely possible they cut Robinson

only if they keep Miller as the one and only FB and also the ST’s guru…but I dunno…There wouldn’t be much experience on ST’s if that happened and really, Robinson is a beast on ST’s. He does every single aspect of them well. He blocks guys onto their backs, he gets in on tackles, clogs lanes, protects…it would be a loss but it is remotely possible.

I just can't see us cutting Robinson

I think he’s exactly the kind of player that Singletary loves to have on a team. Hard working, leadership, plays all out with what he’s got.

Looked impressive, really hope that guy makes the team..you can’t coach that kind of speed on the edge.

I know what I'm talking about, I started at right guard for the 1992 College Park Falcons.
