Where The 49ers Are At Right Now!!!!
I was looking through roster projections and came up with a real "novice" thought. This 49ers team is the deepest we have seen in a long time. By deep i mean talented as well. It is possible for teams to have a deep roster, but those filling the roster are average players. I think i am correct in assuming that the 2010 version of the 49ers is the most talented and deep of any team since the 2002 version.
I have seen a nice amount of progression in terms of identifying roles for the 49ers over the course of the first two pre season games. Additionally, in areas where competition remains, my belief is that it is strength going against strength. In previous seasons we saw the likes of Arnaz Battle, Darrell Jackson, and Mark Roman fighting for roster spots. Today, none of them would even last to the 53 man roster, let alone the 1st cut down date. This is an extraordinary depiction of how far this team has come over the last couple of seasons.
LETS LOOK AT IT FOR A SECOND
Back Up QB: This has received a lot of play on here and other sites, but i really don't think there is much competition for this spot. David Carr was brought in to be the starting QB, and that is exactly what he will be. I am excited about the play of Nate Davis to some extent, but it is ever apparent that he isn't ready to come in and play if Alex Smith goes down. I am excited to see him play over the final two pre season games because we really need to get a finite read on whether or not he has a future in the NFL as a starting QB.
David Carr over Nate Davis
Back up Running Back: Again we have nearly the same issue as back up QB. Although it must be noted that the back up RB will play a nice amount in our system. Who can't be impressed by the play of Anthony Dixon during the 1st two pre season game. This dude can flat out play, barely did i i see him not move forward after initial contact in both game. This is something that cannot be taught. However, Brian Westbrook will be the back up and 3rd down specialist on this team, and i could not be more excited about it. Apparently, he looks as good as ever on the practice field and having him complement Gore could mean amazing things for the 49ers offense this season. Consequently, i do see a scenario where the 49ers utilize a quazi Marion Barber-Felix Jones-Tashard Choice RB committee. This of course with Gore getting a bulk of the playing time. All of a sudden this is an extremely deep position. Is it possible that Glen Coffee's retirement was a blessing in disguise?
Brian Westbrook over Anthony Dixon
Fullback: Let me make this a clear and precise as possible. We ONLY need to carry one FB an we should only carry ONE fullback. And his name is Jehuu Caulcrick PERIOD. Moran Norris is past his prime, has no upside remaining it we show our hand when he is in the game. I remember Caulcrick at Michigan State, and this dude was an absolute physical beast. He has upside, he is young, and he can play special teams. We could use the roster spot for another player that is more deserving than Moran Norris. Some think that Britt Miller is still in the equation, but it appears that the 49ers coaching staff has strayed away from that in recent weeks
Jehuu Caulcrick over Moran Norris and Britt Miller
#3 Wide Receiver: On the surface this seems like Ted Ginn Jr job to lose, but i am really impressed by the play of Dominique Zeigler who has just come in and played great in the games. Anyone who has followed the 49ers over the course of the last couple of seasons has to be impressed by the work ethic of Zeigler. That said, i do believe that Ginn will start out as the #3 WR and produce in that role, as i believe Zeigler will produce in the #4 WR position
Ted Ginn Jr over Dominique Zeigler
Final Wide Receiver Spot: I really don't think there is much competition here. I believe that the 49ers are only holding on to Jason Hill in order to see if a team will bite and give up a low draft pock for him. Kyle Williams will win the #5 WR spot, even if he doesn't play in another pre season game. He has tremendous upside, while it appears Hill is regressing as a player. I am disappointed to say this, but Jason Hill's days on the 49ers are extremely limited
Kyle Williams over Jason Hill
For you information i no longer believe that there is a battle between Nate Byham and Tony Curtis for the #3 TE spot. It seems obvious that the 49ers chose Byham in this battle.
I will be back with the defensive side later on this week.

Jehuu Caulcrick over Moran Norris and Britt Miller is my favorit thing that you brougth up
I agree on all except.....
Jehuu Caulcrick. I think he should be on the practice squad, but I’d much rather have Moran Norris as the fullback.
I'll take anyone other than Norris
but I don’t think it’ll be caulcrick

why what?
Why anyone other than Norris or why I think it won’t be Caulcrick?
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
I think Norris is an awful fullback. He misses his blocks and he doesn’t have good hands. When he’s in there the opposing team absolutely knows it’s going to be a run.
I think either Miller or Caulcrick can do just as well as Norris if not better. The reason I think it will be Miller is because of the experience factor. Caulcrick’s been bouncing around from team to team the past couple of years and has yet to land a roster spot, not even a practice squad spot. Miller made the 53 last year and played in a handful of games.
Miller also plays ST (which is what earned him his roster spot last year), so he can make the team for that reason and then also play FB.

Any chance Byham takes over as primary FB / third TE?

Ginn is the #3
Ziggy, i think, has locked up the #4 spot. To me its between Williams and Hill for the final spot. Williams gets it because he is our return man.
actually I think we know who the #1 and #2 WRs are but the #3, #4 and #5 WR will be the ones who don't get cut.
I seriously doubt that Sing will label that with numbers.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
It's fairly simple to figure out the WR position:
- Crabs
- Morgan (some return experience)
- Ginn (primary kick returner)
- Zeigler (backup kick & punt returner)
- Williams (primary punt returner/ slot reciever)

Wiliams should be the 49er's 4th WR
i would rather have Williams over Zeigler and Hill
Ginn over Zeigler for 3rd WR?
Depends on the situation. On third down, I see them going with Zeigler. He is more relaible with catching the ball. On 1st and 2nd downs, I see Ginn.
You got it right
I don’t really believe that any of the three additional receivers will have a number on the depth chart. You could essentially say they are all #3 and will be used in the situations that best suit their skill set and the offensive gameplan for the week.
Example, if we were to play Baltimore and their weak secondary, Ginn would be #3 to get some separation and draw coverage from everyone else. If we played a team with weak coverage in the LBs, Williams or Ziggy would be #3 to get possession and continuously move the chains.

Ginn will play anytime we are playing a team with an elite safety
Ginn buys that extra 1/3-1/2 a second for the other guys.

Either Way we have alot of options at WR. They are going to change the depth chart alot until they find which one works best. The only guaranteed Spot is #1 for Crabs
I agree with the premise
that 3-5 are up for grabs and depend on certain situations. That was a good point to make. However, the #3 WR would be in on 1st and 2nd downs when we go with a 3 WR, 1 TE, RB set. I don’t think the #3 WR will get as much playing time as last season. The 49ers have a wide array of options in terms of formation. One of the best formations would have to be Gore/Westbrook backfield, Davis at TE, Crabtree and Morgan at the WR slots. This gives us our 5 best options on the field at the same time and enables our offense to show formations that the defense will be unfamiliar with.
For example, the idea of having both Gore and Westbrook in the game will keep the defense off balance. They will have no idea if the ball is going to be handed off to Gore or Westbrook. And on passing plays one may stay in to block (both very good blocking backs), and the other goes out to receive, both could stay in to block, or both could to out to receive (both very good receiving backs). I am truly excited to see how Raye handles both backs. In most cases it shouldn’t be which one, but both in the game. I also like the idea of mixing up the backs on the same possession. Dallas gave Barber a possession, then Jones a possession, then Choice a possession. I don’t think that utilizes a deep backfield as well as it could.

All great points. But, now I wonder...
Is Raye creative enough to do something with that? Is Smith comfortable enough in the pocket to use it? His stats from the pocket are horrible, that is why “Raye-Gun” was coined.
The formation you described HAS to be a scary formation for a defense to see. I have not looked into Raye’s career, and I’m not sure if his predictability or seeming unimaginative play calling was due to Raye or his lack of confidence in the team (had to supress negative comments about our QBs). I hope to see it, especially early in the season. That would give us a little extra protection while our 1st round draft picks are learning, and once we don’t need that protection… we can do whatever we want from there.
I'm essentially in favor of anyone not named Norris...
And, as mentioned above, Miller has experience, which counts over Caulcrick, who I like as a prospect, but not for this year…
People have also mentioned Byham, but I don’t see that happening.
As to the third WR, I think people are right that it will be situational. I think Zeigler has flashed some promise, but the person I REALLY want to see deliver on his potential this year is Josh Morgan. That guy has supposedly been the “next big thing” for a couple of seasons now, and I want him to prove it!
