Official NN 53-Man Roster Projection FanPost

Over the last few days, I've noticed a few people posting projections of the 49ers potential 53-man roster. Obviously we welcome that kind of discussion, but we need to make it a bit more orderly. Accordingly, I think we need to have a single official FanPost for 53-man roster projections.

I'll have some front page 53-man projections between now and the end of the preseason, but otherwise, let's use this FanPost for 53-man projections. If someone posts one and you want to comment on it, just reply to their 53-man comment so we can keep things relatively orderly.

Also, in order to keep this up top for the rest of the preseason, please Rec this if you get a moment.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

not a bad idea

an injured Patrick Willis > a healthy Matt Wilhelm…

Alex Boone WON'T survive on the PS...in fact, he wont even clear waivers.

Pretty good except for a couple of things

I really can’t see us rostering 5 safeties and only 8 defensive linemen. I think we cut one of the safeties (either Curtis Taylor or Michael Lewis) and keep an extra defensive lineman. I think your practice squad is good other than Mitchell whom I don’t think makes it, which is why I suggest cutting Taylor or Lewis (with his $5 million contract) and keeping Mitchell

It will be a difficult choice when they look at young players and Lewis and Evans.

Sing could decide to go with the promising youth.

We could lose Goldson and Lewis next year and so keeping Taylor this year may be more important. He may not make it to the PS.

Mitchell has shown some good things so far and Evans is getting older. I think Mitchell’s upside make make them choose him over Evans. Mitchell is another who may not make it to the PS.

Best option

As of this moment there is not a better option for SS. Mays will get there eventually and Reggie Smith is a possibility but those two are not better options that Michael Lewis at this time.

only 8 defensive linemen?

i assume you meant only 6, since that’s how many i listed. i still think curtis taylor makes it though, because in camp he was on the first team return coverage unit, which is a major factor in determining which backups get a roster spot. i would love it if they cut michael lewis and gave his starting spot to reggie smith, but i can’t honestly project that to actually happen.

also, i think there’s a very realistic chance Khalif Mitchell clears waivers. last year he couldn’t even hold on to his PS spot all year, and now all of a sudden he’s a league-wide hot commodity? i’m missing step 2 there.

Well as of yesterday, they’re reporting that he restructured his contract…

I think this is the most likely scenario

Although I can live with keeping Wragge as the backup C until Heitmann is back (not sure if Snyder has taken any snaps for us at C?) We can probably start Taylor on PS for now and then sign him back and decide what to do with Wragge or someone else on the OL (unfortunately might end up being Boone) when Heitmann returns.

i can see the team keeping Wragge

until Heitmann comes back, and trying to hide Curtis Taylor on the PS until then.

but Heitmann will only miss 2 or 3 games, so it might be smarter to use Adam Snyder as the emergency backup Center for a few games and not risk losing Taylor, who we might need next year when Goldson is a FA and Michael Lewis continues to suck.

i would cut Bakari Grant from your PS

and put Keaton Kristick on. we will need more ILBs in the near future (Takeo Spikes is old and Matt Wilhelm sucks) but i don’t think we will need more young receivers anytime soon. every WR that will make the roster this year is from the 2007 draft or later:

Crabtree (2009), Morgan (2008), Ginn (2007), Williams (2010), Zeigler (UDFA 2007), and maybe Hill (2007)

so yeah, we’re pretty much loaded with young WRs.

Let me update this since the Raider game.

Waive Taylor, and if he makes it through waivers, put him on the PS.
Waive Miller, and if he does make it through waivers, leave him OFF the practice squad.
Waive Grant and keep him off the practice squad.

by mikeinsp on Aug 29, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The only reason to waive a player

is to either put him on the PS if he clears or to put him on IR.

If you’re not planning on keeping him you cut him.

you don't want Brit Miller on the Practice Squad?

keep in mind, the PS is for players who have enough talent/potential to become contributers in a year or two, but are too raw to contribute now.

even if he doesn’t make the roster, i still think Brit Miller has the potential to become a contributer in 2011 or 2012, and therefore justifies at least a spot on the Practice Squad.

I would switch Wragge with Boone....

I know that Wragge is a bacKup center (not really but he can play it I’m told), but if Baas got hurt, Snyder also knows how to play center and has taken snaps at center, so I believe that Boone has great upside compared to Wragge. I don’t think that Boone can clear waivers.

by ericalancanty on Sep 2, 2010 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I think tonight's game should put to rest any thoughts that the 49ers will cut Sims

to keep Boone. When Staley got hurt in the first half they turned to Sims as a replacement for the first string offense. Had they been planning on cutting him for Boone they would’ve put Boone in there instead.

According to Barrows, some undrafted tackle just got waived and 3 teams wanted to sign him. Boone will never make it to the PS. Would you keep 10 OL, cut Boone, or cut Wragge/another lineman?

by FanBelge on Aug 29, 2010 8:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd keep Boone and cut Snyder or Wragge

probably Snyder at this point since we have nobody that can play Center should Baas go down. Once Heitmann comes back I’d cut Wragge

1) Norris isn’t a good FB.
2) Miller brings more to Special Teams then Norris.
3) Byham is a TE. Not a starting FB.
4) With both Byham and Miller on the roster, what great player is getting blocked?
5) Taylor’s only significant playing time is on Special Teams, nothing a team would claim him off waiver wires for.

The indication of Byham playing some FB means I know he plays another position.

Taylor has better coverage skills than our starting SS, you never know who would claim him, the Seahawks are very young and inexperienced there. What miller brings to ST’s can be found in another player easily, for example Byham, why does this sound like I been over this before, ahh yes you have an issue reading or something.

We actually haven’t seen a lot of Taylor on D. He brings nothing to the team that other, better Safeties could.

Also you haven’t addressed Norris being awful as a FB with no Special Teams value. Miller is at least Special Teams value and has potential at FB. No reason to roster Norris.

Byham is a TE. We all saw what he can do at FB, get knocked on his butt.

while completely ignoring the context in which it was said. I find myself wanting to contribute less and less because of it.

On a separate note, there are several “personalities” around here whose posts I completely ignore because I know, in advance, that trying to read them and actually understand them will be an exercise in futility. They’ll use the excuse that this is just a football board… I don’t feel that there’s any excuse for not being able to write your own native language at at least a ninth-grade level… and if someone has actually graduated from high school, their writing should reflect that. so at this point, i think we can assume that stoudamire, bakari grant, and brandon long will not make the practice squad even thought they are all eligible for it.

If the Niners had absolutely no interest in Stoudemire, they would've cut him outright. Not just waive him.

are you sure?

i thought if you cut a rookie, they automatically got put on the waiver list.

i’m not totally clear on the waiver wire rules.

When life gives you fruit, add a bunch of sugar to it.

by these3words on Sep 1, 2010 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

You're actually right

Went and read up on it and it’s basically got to do with time of service.

A vested player (4 or more accrued seasons) who’s cut by the team automatically becomes a free agent, unless that cut happens after the trading deadline (which I think is week 6) but before the end of the season.

Any player with less than 4 years worth of accrued seasons is automatically put on the waiver wire. The time on the waiver wire is different, depending on the time of year, but the rules are the same. Any team in the league can put a claim on the guy and the team with the worst record has first priority.

Most sports writers seem to use the terms “cut”, “released”, and “waived” interchangeably.

When he played and practiced, he was in starting roles.

Paymah has been in nickel at best and special teams. He is, in a sense, a backup, whereas Paymah is a special teamer.

Not what I meant.

I meant, Will James on the roster? He’s injured. Do you think they would cut him for now, until his ankle heals, and sign him to the roster. He was performing very good before his injury. And if they did, would they keep him along with Paymah and Adams. Or would they cut Paymah. Even though Paymah is a good special teamer. Do you know how James has done on special teams in the past. Or was he ever on them.

by mikeinsp on Aug 30, 2010 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep.

I think the team likes him more than Paymah, despite injuries.

what makes you think the team likes Will James?

in the short time before he got injured, i remember reading the practice notes from the beat writers and the name WIll James kept coming up in the same sentence as “was responsible for deep coverage on the play” and “hit Vernon Davis for an easy touchdown”.

needless to say, it didn’t sound like he was doing very well.

When life gives you fruit, add a bunch of sugar to it.

by these3words on Aug 30, 2010 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Looked decent in the games.

Played better last season than Paymah ever has, coming off his best season, didn’t actually look bad in practice. Mostly, I think Paymah is a terrible corner. I’d take an emergency backup cornerback with proven starter ability (James) when we have two corners who have missed sizeable time in their careers as opposed to keeping Paymah on because he’s decent at special teams.

I’m predicting two kickers on the final 53 simply because Mr. Roboto is getting old and doesn’t have the power in his leg that he used to. If it’s a 40 yard field goal or less I’d want him in. Anything longer than that and there’s cause for concern. Plus his kick offs aren’t all that impressive. I find it very odd that we have two kickers on the roster still—both of ’em veterans—and both have been on the roster since the end of the last season.

If we do cut bait and go with one kicker my pick is for Brit Miller to land on the roster.

I think Snyder is on his way out the door

his performance thus far at guard has been less than inspiring. Baas can fill the role of backup guard just fine and Wragge can do it at least as well as Snyder (though both of them fail to fill me with confidence).

I haven't seen him make mistakes at guard.

Few and far between, if that. I’d rather have him than Wragge. Snyder >>>>> Wragge by a huge margin.

The question, for both of you, is, Will Snyder be a good backup C. If not then Wragge is in and Snyder out.

If Snyder shows he can be a backup C then Wragge is out and Snyder is in. Snyder may not be that good but he does backup all positions on the OL.

If he can snap, then yeah.

From what I’ve heard, he can snap. I theorized years ago that if Snyder could snap he could be a fantastic center, it fits him better than any other position based on his size, speed, strength and footwork.

interesting thought with the two kickers

but if Joe Nedney makes them nervous enough to keep Shane Andrus, there’s a good chance Nedney is gone.

i mean, you say you’re only comfortable with Joe Nedney for field goals of up to 40 yeards. but how many field goals of 40 or less yards would Shane Andrus miss? enough to justify giving two roster spots to kickers? i don’t see it.

When life gives you fruit, add a bunch of sugar to it.

*40 yards

by these3words on Aug 31, 2010 1:44 AM PDT up reply actions

He's only attempted one field goal during the regular season

and missed that one.

However last year he averaged almost 67 yards on his kickoffs. Nedney averages closer to 60 yards. If we’re focusing as much on special teams as Singletary seems to be implying we are a kicker with a strong leg might make it just to kick off.

This year Nedney has had one KO in the pre-season and it went 65 yards. Not too bad—Andrus 70.9 yards over 7 KOs against Indy, 64.8 yards over 4 KOs vs Minnesota, and 65 over 2 kickoffs vs Oakland

by smileyman on Aug 31, 2010 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

you are making an excellent case for Shane Andrus making the roster

but i still think that if he does, Joe Nedney is gone.

so what if Andrus missed his first field goal attempt? if he can’t make short kicks with decent consistency, he probably wouldn’t still be on the team. maybe he misses more than Nedney, but he would have to miss a lot more than Nedney to justify giving Nedney a roster spot with Andrus already on.

if the coaching staff is comfortable with Nedney, then it’s Nedney all the way. if not, then it’s all-in with Andrus.

When life gives you fruit, add a bunch of sugar to it.

I'm feeling pretty confident that Andrus makes it

just not yet willing to say it’s at the expense of Nedney—at least not to begin the season.
