Thoughts from the game
No great surprises here, just 3 things I took from this game.
1. The 2nd half O-line looked a lot like the line we've been sporting the last 3 years or so. David Carr had to run way too much.
2. Phillip Adams not only makes the team, but will also make a significant contribution, while Jason Hill is cut before next week.
3. Dixon and Westbrook will be good back-ups, but this team will only go as far as Frank Gore will take them.

Carr is a sack machine...he hesitates all the time,
making the o-line look bad. Smith and Davis have better pocket awarness and avoid the pressure a lot better.
like alex
before he knew the offense…snap drop back first read not there uh oh dont know what the protection is to see the 2nd and 3rd read. crap run for my life (to the right) right into the pressure and sack! Seein alex work the pocket these 3 games is vastly different from years past. Seeing a QB know where and how his line is protecting looks…..dare is say it “professional”.
when the QB knows whats fully going on it makes the line look much better and will definately help the youngsters. I dont think ive seen alex hold the ball longer than 3 sec with out getting it out or rolling to make a play not just good ole throw it away scramble
Can u c coach sing's vision? I do!......We all know PATRICK WILLIS is our future!

Regarding point one.
It seemed to me as though a lot of the second half pressure came from Carr holding the ball too long, and/or stepping out of the safe zone. His pocket awareness looked horrible, although the line was definitely not perfect.

A. Dixon
I like this kid. Alot. Having him back there behind Frank is very reassuring to me.
I'll take cheese on mine.
Yep gotta love him
he needs to learn when to dance and when not too though.

Iupatti, Dixon, Davis, Williams
all looking good. Byham had a bleep up tonight and haven’t seen much of Bowman nor Mays but overall no flops at al.

Byham redeemed his screwup
by making a great grab for the 2pt conversion

Eh
He got lucky on that play.
That play where he got hit in the face is the reason I hate him so much.

david carr
sucks. it could be jus me but it seem like the production of the offense went way down when he came in. i may sound like a broken record but i think N. Davis would have gotten more done than carr. it may not have been by much but i bet he would have looked better doing it.
go niners!!! airday allday
You're not alone
David Carr is horrible.
He may get the protection calls right but he still doesn’t know what to do with a clean pocket.
He’ll have all day to throw then he’ll proceed to panic and assume the fetal position.

Nate may have not played himself into the #2 job,
but Carr may play himself out of it. We’ll see next week when those two are the main QB’s.

Sadly, it seems a little bit like Nate has found at least a temporary doghouse. Singletary doesn’t seem like a guy who is big on doghouses, but I would still hate to be in his.

That said, I don’t think it really makes any difference who the 2nd stringer is on this team this year, though there seem to be some advantages to using the guy who has started 79 games in the league in that role.

David Carr was as bad against.......
the Raiders as he was good against the Colts. He holds on to the ball too long, but he also had a different line than Alex did, and it showed.

Carr
is a very positive presence in the locker room.
If Alex stays healthy he won’t play a down.
If he doesn’t, we will be relying on our defense.
Back -up quarterback is not necessarily a high priority (ask the Colts).
Secondary depth is a much more important issue (nickle and dime cb, especially).
Negativity
I am not thrilled with the persistent descent toward negativity here.
Smileyman said all that needs to be said:
" Yup
Carr held on waaaaaaay too long"
Enough said. No need to dwell there.
Yes Carr did hold on waaaaaaay too long, but.....
Note he didn’t throw any INTs. This is not a terrible trade off.

It’s the nature of the beast. Interest is most easily piqued with drama, and drama is rarely positive. It’s one of the rules of entertainment.

with you on the negativity
We also probably rip each others opinions a bit too much, now that you mention it. There’s spirited discussion, and then there’s being disrespectful, which we err towards at times…
As to Carr, yes, he holds it too long, but I WOULD be interested to see what he looks like behind a better line (ie, not the one he was playing behind in the second half). And, as someone mentioned, he looked solid in Indy.
I’m excited to see our running back platoon come alive this Fall; I think we ARE better off without coffee, our line will improve substantially as our rookies develop, and Gore’s 49 (like that?) yarder last night was classic Frank. Him running over a couple dudes en route was a thing of beauty…

On a bright note, did anyone notice the block Ginn attempted to throw when Gore was running.
Although the block didnt work I was happy to see Ginn attempt to take a hit or throw a hit. I couldn’t decide which one Ginn wanted to do.
No I'd say the block worked
It did allow Gore to gain some extra yards after all. It wasn’t exactly text-book but that’s ok

Ya but he got blown up instead of the other way around.
But the main point is that he attempted to block. I say that is a step forward from the run out of bounds to avoid the hit Ginn.
as long as he gets blown up...
at least he can fall at the defender’s feet- i like that approach. ginn’s best blocks come in the fetal position. fitting.
Atleast he attempted it.
i’d much rather have him attempt the block and get blown up and help Gore get more yards then just not even trying.
Refs were still standing in the secondary
Throughout the 2nd quarter, there was a ref standing in the center of the secondary. Early in the game he was lined up behind the offense, then he was back again after halftime. Was it some sort of “trial” alignment? I thought it was a done deal for the entire season and the entire game?
It probably didn’t make much of a difference since everyone in the secondary is already accustomed to them standing there.
He moves back on the defense
during fieldgoal attempts and during 2 min drills.
