San Francisco 49ers vs San Diego Chargers: A Preseason Prospector's Guide
The 49ers wrap up their 2010 preseason schedule against the San Diego Chargers, in a game that has become a regular conclusion to their annual preseason campaign. The Chargers have won the last three games, but we all know this final game holds very little importance for either team. Really, the key is to avoid injury. Alex Smith will likely see some playing time, but I'd suspect it will be incredibly limited, as will be the case for most of the starters. There are a few roster battles left, but nothing that will require worrying too much about the starters.
This will mark the 24th consecutive preseason these two clubs have clashed, with the Chargers winning the last three meetings. For the second consecutive season under head coach Mike Singletary, the 49ers enter the final week of preseason play at 3-0. The Niners are one of only two NFL teams with a 3-0 record this preseason (Baltimore).
Rookie RB Anthony Dixon leads the NFL with 220 rushing yards during the preseason, which includes rushing for the go ahead touchdown in a come-from-behind victory at Oakland this past weekend, 28-24.
The 49ers begin their quest for the NFC West Division crown on September 12th as they travel to Seattle to kickoff the regular season.

You look at those numbers
And you can see that we aren’t far off from 13-3 actually the distinction is for us to stop beating ourselves.
Yes we are
you need a stud QB like Rivers to get 13 wins
amateur move
Alex Boone WON'T survive on the PS...in fact, he wont even clear waivers.

I miss Strickland
Coach Boone: And who's team is this, Gary? Is this your team? Or is this your daddy's team?
Bertier: Yours.
Coach Boone: Now get on the bus. Put on your jacket first and then get on the bus.
the stat I'm looking at
17.6 (4th) Points allowed/gm 20.0 (11th)
if this were a real game I’d expect to win a close one if our defense showed up.

unfortunately:
20.6 (18th) Points per game 28.4 (4th)
i already had to explain this to ItBurnzWhenIP, but surely you understand that points per game is just as important as points allowed per game.
17.6 + 28.4 = 46 /2 = 23, so therefore the chargers could be reasonably expected to score about 23 points on the 49ers in a real game.
20.0 + 20.6 = 40.6 /2 = 20.3, so therefore the 49ers could reasonably be expected to score about 20 points on the chargers in a real game.
based on last year’s stats, the 49ers should be expected to lose to the chargers by about 3 points in a real game.
When life gives you fruit, add a bunch of sugar to it.
I think we’re improved over last year on both sides of the ball and I don’t think that SD is much, if any improved…then again I don’t follow them too closely so perhaps you have a different take on them vs. 2009?

i don't think the chargers have greatly improved,
but frankly, i don’t think the 49ers have improved much either. they have a whopping two new starters over last year (Iupati and Davis) and i think only one of them (Iupati) is far enough along to represent a serious upgrade over last season.
Davis should improve as the season goes on and Mays/Bowman could be starters by year’s end, but as of right now, Left Guard is the only position where the 49ers are significantly better than last year.
which means until further notice, the chargers are better than the 49ers.

I think our pass rush situation could be significantly improved over last year's
with the addition of the OLBs we’ve got trying for spots (Briggs, LaBoy). But yeah I actually tend to agree with you on this one—our defense isn’t that much better (not that there was much room to move in), and offensively Iupati’s the biggest upgrade (though you can’t discount the Westbrook factor either).
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
By the roster turnover measure
Offensively the team can see a lot gains with simple player maturation. Don’t forget the addition of Ginn, he adds an element of pure speed and deep threat that Jason Hill never delivered.
this
it’s not just a matter of new players that determines improvement…time in system, chemistry, more practice…we’ve seen and heard about it. I have to believe the offense will be better with a full camp together, not a QB competition, no true #1 WR, and an OL that was just as much new last year as it is this year (RT especially)

by no true #1 WR
mean Crabtree came in late

Ryan Mathews
He is the second coming of LT. Just wait and see….I watched him at Fresno State he is a dam good football player.
The Best Stat of All

Santa Clara, You are the Father!
Chargers have no team chemistry anymore
They’ve rid themselves of all their motivational leaders. As clever as Norv is, I don’t think he can inspire his players to play hard. He is like Nolan and Childress in that way. But at Minnesota, the players rally behind Favre at least. The Chargers are not going to fight to win when the chips are down.

Bertier: Yours.

You never count a PRO out!
Be it a player or a team. They are Pros for a reason. No matter how bad a player or a team is He, she , them, whatever in any sport can win on any given day. I know everybody knows this, but I don’t want us or our team to take anyone likely.
That’s all I saying.
