Shots in the dark: Things I might think I know

Tre's note: Well it's been ages since I wrote a fanpost so I figured why not throw one together, write without stopping, no proofreading...so here ya go!

We've had nearly a full week of traning camp thus far (well, "we" haven't...but anyone who doesn't picture themselves there, at camp, even going through the drills...should just turn in their 49ers fan-card right now).  Based on the micro-storylines that possibly mean nothing...I choose to take it a step further and crank up the speculation machine.

What do we know, or think we know so far?  I'm going to tell you...after the jump.

Star-divide

Let's start with injuries, shall we?  Sure they are thus-far minor...but what the heck, they make things interesting (albeit unfortunate for the ones injured, yeah I get that).

Injuries

David Baas - Concussion - Day to day

This is giving Mike Iupati all the 1st team reps at Left Guard (LG).  I think most of us expected "Big Mike" to take over the spot eventually anyways, some felt by week 1 even.  I think this as well as some other injuries fall into the "Isaac Bruce" category we all went through last year when Crabtree finally signed.  Suddenly Bruce was injured and didn't dress for games, thus opening the door for Crabtree.  I'm not calling it conspiracy, just saying the coaches can sigh in relief that they didn't have to just "hand the job" over to the young guy.

Chilo Rachal - Dehydration - Day to day

Yet again, this forced Adam Snyder into the RG spot (after Tony Wragge began there, but wait...another injury mucked that all up...we'll get to that next) and as a result, gave Anthony Davis 1st team reps at RT.  Curious indeed.  The big fella still needs work on his pass protection though, so I'm not calling the spot his just yet, despite the convenient timing of things.

Eric Heitmann - Stinger - So far just missed PM practice Wed.

When Chilo first went down, Wragge moved into the RG spot, then Heitmann curiously got a stinger and Wragge had to snap the ball...moving Snyder over to RG, and the domino effect continued as Davis moved into starting RT spot (in camp, for one day...which means until the end of the earth).

Nate Byham - Rolled ankle - Day to day?

Ummm...oh, sorry, lost my train of thought...anyways...WHO CARES!  Sorry, not too into the TE "competition" for 3rd and possibly unnecessary TE.

Delanie Walker - Concussion - Day to day

This gave one of the other 14 TE's a chance to come in and not run as fast or catch as well as Delanie...a shocking development.  Yawn.

Scott McKillop - Torn ACL, Patellar - Season-ending

McKillop lead all Special Teams (ST's) tacklers last season and was said to be looking better this camp than his rookie year.  Bowman has struggled in a position change, slightly undersized, and is somewhat raw.  This could give Bowman needed reps to improve, or it could end up being a serious injury that screws up our ST's to a degree...I'm hoping, and believing someone will step up like Bowman, Dixon, etc.

Other impressions

Crabtree goes to the Pro Bowl this year...ok, maybe as an alternate.  The kid is on fire and we hear nothing to the contrary.  He dropped a deep ball, which is weird for flypaper-hands-Crabtree but part of me thinks Maiocco was lying.  He's jealous of Crabtree's hair.

Ted Ginn, Jr. is going to see time on offense.  And not just as a gimmick player.  They'll take their chances chucking it deep to him, I mean, if he catches half of the deep balls, and they throw two a game, the safeties have to keep one eye on him.  That free's up Vernon Davis, the aforementioned Crabtree, and others not to mention it keeps the safety out of the box for Frank Gore to destructinate defenses...yeah, I think that came from Phineas and Ferb (Doofenscmirtz).

Who the heck is playing in the slot?  Williams is built for it...but I haven't heard his name much at all thus far.  Hill is a good option there too because he's a great zone-beater (not wife-beater...but Dominique Zeigler wears one in his twitter profile pic) and has a knack for getting open.  Still...this is as clear as mud.  Crabtree has also been mentioned as moving around a lot.  I guess all this unpredictability is good to keep defenses guessing...and fans.

The Fullbacks are in camp with a purpose.  They're knocking people down, throwing them aside, flattening them...this is good.  I have no idea who will start at FB come week 1 but my gut says it could be Moran Norris again with Brit Miller seeing good time on special teams and maybe eventually taking over at FB.  Miller has been a man possessed in camp thus far with his blocking and receiving.

We have a mid-sized back who does it all, a slightly smaller back who likes to run hard in the middle, and a huge back who likes to dance around like Walter Payton.  Weird.  Sounds like if Glen Coffee and/or Anthony Dixon can play ST's, they'll all three be on the roster.  Again, unpredictability?

Our secondary needs to defend the deep ball better.  That and/or the offense is going to throw the ball deep a ton this year, successfully.  Maybe it's both...Hopefully iron does sharpen iron in this case and they both learn how to refine their role in the long passing game.  I for one though am tired of watching a 49ers DB get beat deep, especially safeties *cough Roman*.  Greg Manusky told Curtis Taylor the other day to "Stay the hell back there Curtis!" after Taylor was beaten deep.

I think our front seven is going to severely injure a lot of people this year, inadvertently.  Still not sure about the Left Defensive End position (holding out hope for Ray McDonald or Kentwan Balmer but both have been quiet this week) but otherwise it sounds like our LB's and Justin Smith are getting all up in the offense's face with great regularity.

The offensive line will still be the #1 issue going into week 1...or question mark at least.  I think we'll be better there just because there was no new OC, system, players coming in late, getting hurt, swapping positions, then getting hurt again...of course some more camp injuries could change that.  My point is there is more continuity and cohesiveness this year and we have a heck of a OL coach in Mike Solari and assistant Ray Brown, both McKittrick disciples.  They are fundamentals guys and hard-asses (Solari is anyways) which fits the mold of the team.  Manusky can't be the only one cursing at the players, after all.

Our return game should be good.  Again, the team has fostered a big competition there and everyone seems to be answering the call.  No muffs the other day which was a great thing to hear after all of the issues earlier in OTA's and mini-camp.  All of these guys except "the money pit" are explosive and have significant return experience.  I think (hope) Ginn will be kick returner and Kyle Williams as punt returner, maybe Vann as both if he can impress and it doesn't hurt the roster spots elsewhere.  Either way we have actual returners this year instead of washed-up wide receivers and demoted starting cornerbacks!  Hey, I know, let's try some reverse punt returns!

We have a lot of depth, and roster cuts are going to be tricky.  There is good talent across the board, making me wish we could keep 60 players.  I hope no one get's poached on the way to the Practice Squad as the team has been known to call players up in the past.  Then again, some players have used up their PS eligibility, which sucks.  Prepare the Kleenex...some Kory Sheets's's will be again leaving for greener pastures this year.

Lastly, Vernon Davis has been completely, utterly, without a doubt unstoppable in practice.  Nobody can stop him and he's averaging like 3 TD's per session.  I don't know if this is a sign that nobody will be able to stop him in 2010 or that the defense needs work on covering speedy TE's...all I know is that they need to challenge him more in practice because it doesn't seem to be working, whatever they're doing to try and stop him.

Did I miss anything?  Let me know and I'll either blow you off or consider adding it as if it was my idea all along.

Nice

And I noticed this at the top of the page, not sure if it’s related to your fanpost, but it should be:

SB Nation Bay Area Editor’s Pick

The front seven is that good, so let’s hope the secondary catches up to them this season. The red zone defense was awesome in 2009, let’s hope the offense can hang on to the ball long enough this year so the defense doesn’t have to bend. Instead, they can just break all the opponents.

I will gladly eat crow if Brandon Jones does well for the 49ers in 2010.

apparently so (the Editor's Pick thing)

wasn’t even aware there was such a thing…I’m slow on the whole SBN Bay Area thing…thanks for the words.

The other thing I’m noticing that I’m about to add is Vernon Davis being utterly unstoppable against our Defense.

I also want to hear more about the battle at LDE

Kind of like you were saying, our front 7 is pretty solid, but with one gigantic hole at left end. I would hope this is the year that Balmer realizes that he can and wants to play football, but I’m not holding my breath. McDonald would be interesting because of his pass rush ability, but can he hold up in the run game? You would think it would be easy to take that spot since the person who is supposed to be in that spot always falls backwards anyway. How can you not beat that, Balmer/McDonald?!?

by ZeroOneInfinity on Aug 5, 2010 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

i have high hopes for McDonald

But he has to work for it. He gets push, he just needs to work on strength and stamina, leverage, holding his ground…I think its a motivation thing

I wouldn't be shocked if RJF rotated in at LDE

it seems to be the position closest in technique to NT whereas RDE is more of the penetrator, pass rusher side…though that’s also indicative of the personnel we’ve had there recently as much as it is the requirements of the positions.

I think if RJF is showing he can handle a spot on the DL, get him in there and let him battle. Lord knows we don’t have any clear-cut performers beyond Franklin and J.Smith.

I think it makes sense as well

Might as well put the best three out there when you can. If RJF can clog holes better than Sopoaga, then Sopoaga should become the backup NT and make RJF a starter. Plus, RJF would be a way better pass rusher than Sopoaga.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Aug 9, 2010 11:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Sopoaga can't pass rush because

he’s only good at going backwards

I’m not sure we really will have anyone spending all that much time at either of these positions. So far I’ve seen Morgan, Crabs, Williams, VD, and Walker in the Slot. I’ve seen Everyone of those guys split wide, and of course the other WR’s. We all know Frank lines up just about everywhere.

I think your on to something about keeping D’s guessing. When you have TE’s like VD and Walker you’d like to make opposing DB’s not have any idea who they will be covering on any given play.

Doubt he clears waivers and makes PS

If you think about it there are teams that have no answer at tackle and they could easily bring him in as depth or to plug him right in. I wouldn’t risk not rostering him even if it means Sims is getting cut.

I’d keep him around if we didn’t have Boone making the strides he is now. If we had a choice between Sims and Snyder for an indefinite role at tackle, it’s Sims IMO.

which is likely gonna push Boone off the roster. Sims can’t back up RT very well but is the best LT backup (arguably) we have. That means we need Snyder because he can play G too and Wragge will be the only other G backup.

Wragge, I don't think he's played a lick of Tackle

plus he’s small, 310 I believe. Either way…

Wragge would be the G/C backup to Baas/Guards but I think you want a true G backup behind him in case he is called into action so you don’t have to dress a PS player or guy off street as the new backup at G. Snyder can be the non-dressing T/G backup with Sims being the dressing one. I still think Boone is the long term answer for swing tackle, potential starter and if we cut him we’re going to need to find someone else cause Sims is on a 1 year deal and is 100 years old

you wouldn't think it would be very hard to find a good 3-4 DE.

couldn’t you wait until day 3 of the draft and then draft a talented DT who fell to the late rounds because he was undersized for a DT? every draft sees talented defensive tackles fall to the late rounds because they are small for a DT, but it seems like these players would be perfect for the 3-4 as DEs.

Thats true

Small athletic DTs may be no good in the middle, but on the outside they would probably be good for opening up holes for the LB’s.

really

You want a big guy for 3-4 DE though. Most play just under 300 because of the space they need to take up and holding the point. J.Smith is a freak of nature and could play QB and win the superbowl probably…ok, not really but dude can play anything DL

The trick is finding a guy with stamina and some quicks to get to the cube when given the chance. Someone mentioned Haralson…maybe if he puts on 20lbs.

big guy, sure.

but as big as a 4-3 DT?

a defensive tackle who weighed 285 lbs. could fall in the draft for being on the small side, but could make an excellent 3-4 DE. (Justin Smith’s listed weight is 285, and many players bulk up after the draft.)

yeah

I’m not talking 300+ unless they can slim down…you’re right on, def. 270+ because you’re gonna get double teamed and still be expected to hold your ground.

Smith is on the smallish side

in a 3-4 you want your DEs to be about 300 and your NT to be in the 330 range.

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

by smileyman on Aug 9, 2010 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

i dunno.

RJF is listed at 295 and i hear he’s been holding his own at NT against the first team.

surely a 285 guy coming out of college could bulk up enough to be an effective DE in a 3-4.

he's over 300, he said as much in an interview

said he hasn’t weighed 295 since college.

I like 3-4 DEs to be a bit smaller

Smith can go longer because he doesn’t have to carry an extra 20 lbs.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

i wouldnt say

We have so many good pass rushing OLB’s. Brooks, maybe Briggs one day…

49ers still on holiday mate!!!

With all these concussions ,dehydrations it feels as if the boyz are still on vacation, thay acting like young boys who don’t want to go back to school, crying out for mama!!!

why do you keep saying that?

Getting hurt doesnt mean you dont want to play, these injuries are happening to every team across the NFL, not just us.

Rugby is one tough sport ...

…and some physical looking player’s … but it’s kinda funny that the only few that make the NFL are ( Kicker’s ) …!!

Gotta love a woman that wear's knee pad's to work ...!!

I would like to add my predictions now that the OL has suffered some injury setbacks..

I predict that the 2 rookies will likely start the season and it will be a rough coupla games till they get their feet underneath them. It is looking a lot like the Niners will start a VERY young OL, and Defensive Linemen who are playing the Niners early in the year are gonna get some cheapie sacks. But the growing pains wont last forever, and I do believe the Niners drafted well. So I think over time (3-5 games???) the youngsters (Chilo included…) will start to come together and possibly have a breakout game (Against the lowly RAY-DUHZ in game 6?) and Smith (if he is still healthy) will put up some good numbers because the line gives him the time he needs to throw the ball. This will turn things around and the team will start gaining the confidence necessary to compete weekly.

My Brave and foolhardy prediction is that I believe that by the end of the year (hopefully in the POST SEASON!) that the Offensive Line comes together (bolstered by the return of Heitmann) and Gels as a unit. I think that we will see the emergence of the Biggest, and Baddest, and strongest unit on the Niners ! If my prediction comes true, I believe we will struggle early in the season, start playing GOOD football after the first 5 games or so, make it to the post season, and play a competitive first round playoff game (that we unfortunately end up losing).

But even in losing, that scenario gives the young players the DESPERATELY needed experience they need, and the playoff loss will leave a REAL bad taste in their mouths. Playoff losses are ALWAYS bitter and not easily forgotten. The Young players and the Veterans as well will have the loss fresh in their minds when next years camp opens. The Media will be pouring salt into the wound by reminding the players over and over about the loss. I think that we will have a team that is angry and willing to work hard to get that bitter taste of defeat out of their mouths! One step at a time, the team will get back to the PROMISE LAND we all want the Niners to return to!

We CAN NOT ALLOW the BASTARD STEELERS Organization to GLOAT about having more RINGS than the MIGHTY FORTY NINERS ORGANIZATION! I hope the Niners are able to enter a 3-5 year window where they are a upper echelon team again and get a ring, or better yet TWO! That is what we need as fans, so that we can again say the NINERS are the GREATEST with PRIDE!

Well, I did say it was a Foolhardy prediction! But I thought that is what this thread is about, right??? Bold Predictions!!

Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Hum....how about a QB

If Smith plays like stays true to form (like 1st preseason game) and continues to fall short, will he make it to the regular season? 70/30, Carr start out regular season….

by rapidrdr on Aug 19, 2010 9:25 PM PDT reply actions

1/99 Carr starts the regular season

Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Tedd Ginn/Delanie Walker, Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook...which one is getting the ball and where?
