Golden Nuggets: Injury Bug
Good morning Niners Nation. I'm just realizing how close actual, factual football is. We're not far away from some preseason action. Not far off from seeing the rookies play, seeing Alex Smith, having questions answered. The thing I'm most looking forward to? Potentially having no questions to answer going into 2011. That would be a great thing, a team that knows exactly what they are and what they have. As 49ers fans, we're so removed from such a notion it's almost foreign to us at this point. Anyway, as far as pertinent 49ers links goes, I've got plenty of those for you so read on and enjoy the linkage, folks. Got some good stuff and some bad stuff, not liking how banged up this team seems to be. Enjoy.
Phil Barber has some notes from the morning of practice. Is anyone else sick of hearing about Cody Wallace being manhandled? It seems like every single practice has Wallace being tossed about. Cut him. (PressDemocrat.com)
Scott McKillop is out for the season with a knee injury. I'll be taking a look at who benefits the most from this tomorrow. Sucks though, I didn't see him as doing much in the way of a linebacker, but you never like to see someone get hurt like that. (CSNBayArea.com)
Sam Lam has a bit about Glen Coffee. I feel like I'm the only Coffee supporter left on Niners Nation, but I'm alright with that. (Examiner.com)
The team seemed to like the change of scenery, which is always good. (PressDemocrat.com)
Why not? Mike Sando has some notes and observations from 49ers camp. (ESPN.com)
It's pretty crazy to think the 49ers may actually be deep at the wide receiver position this coming season. Wasn't it a huge area of weakness last year? (Yahoo.com)
Here are some notes on the practices from Brown. (MercuryNews.com)
McKillop isn't the 49ers only injury concern. Not liking these nagging injuries. (PressDemocrat.com)
Here is Maiocco's latest chat transcript. (CSNBayArea.com)
Even more on Ted Ginn and the 49ers depending on him for the deep ball. Crossing my fingers. (SacBee.com)

Coffee
I don’t hate on him, I wasn’t impressed either though. He seems to be doing well this season, if his pass protection and vision is good, I’m fine with him. I do have high hopes for Dixon one day too though. I hope they do keep all three and have one play a lot of ST’s.

I'll give him credit for putting on that much good weight. We'll see what it does for him.
He was never anything special in college but maybe if he continues to work like he did in the offseason he can be a decent special teams player behind Dixon
Gimme 1 round!

Yep you are alone
I cant stand glenn coffee cut his ass already… And good luck to scott Mckillop
Coffee is delicious.....
oh wait, that coffee? I don’t see what everyone’s problem is. The guy wasn’t a first round pick, so don’t expect him to be winning a rushing title anytime soon. He should be good in relief of Gore and continue to get better.
A lot of people think Rathman is the savior for our RBs and he can get guys like Miller and Dixon to be spectacular players, but for some reason Coffee is completely incapable of doing the same thing? Boggles my mind.
parity
the NFL is getting used to constant roster evolution including rookies seeing significant playing time and sometimes enjoying great success early on. We have subconsciously raised the bar on rookie expectations as a result, and expected Coffee to show us some flashes of being a starting caliber RB…we have to slow down. My patience will be tested waiting for Mays, Bowman, Dixon, Kyle Williams, etc. to develop too…they have tons of upside but are raw in ways and probably wont be starters immediately.

Some of it can be the fact that rookies are getting paid a lot more right from the start...
than some veterans, so they should be expected to play well and be successful early on. Earn that paycheck, baby lol

True
The fact that Gore came in at about the same pick and was immediately better than Barlow doesn’t help Coffee any. We also can’t expect too much from a rookie with that god-awful line we had last year. I had made a post that compared his numbers to Gore’s ‘05 season and they’re compareable. Gore’s OL in ’05 was better than what we had last year also.
As far as our rookies are concerned now, I expect Mays to contribute and show some flashes, as well as Bowman, but I’m a realist so I don’t see any of the rookies making the pro bowl. Williams I expect to contribute on returns and maybe catch a few passes if he makes the final cut, but I don’t see why everyone is so high on Dixon and expect so much from him. There is a reason 32 teams passed on him for five-plus rounds.
Dixon
BIG, Nimble, Good receiver. Yes, raw, but upside is there. No expectations, just excitement.

it would be a travesty if Anthony Dixon was a starter immediately.
because Frank Gore would be dead or otherwise incapacitated.

Just because
I don’t say anything about Coffee, doesn’t mean I’m not a Coffee supporter. I’ve just kept quiet about him because I had some bold ass predictions about him last year. I like Anthony Dixon more, but that doesn’t mean I think poorly of Coffee. Franks, Beans and Cowbell in 2010!
I will gladly eat crow if Brandon Jones does well for the 49ers in 2010.

glen coffee
From what i saw last year, and i am taking into account how horrible the line was last year, but coffee led the league last year in runs of 0-1 yard(s). Thats in a backup role too, i dunno what to expect with more carries. Thats why personally im for dixon.
Coffee will beat Dixon.
All I’m sayin’.
