Well in fairness

calling McKillop our best ST might be a stretch. He did lead the team in ST tackles but I wouldn’t call him our best ST guy.

Brooks’ injury should be fine—he’ll be ready to go by the season opener.

Heitmann broke his fibula and is out 6-8 weeks. That’s a major one.

We’ve also had a bunch of nicks and bruises including a couple of mild concussions.

LT Charlie Johnson has a sprained foot

though it’s probably nothing major. Their 3rd round pick (CB Kevin Thomas) hurt his knee in OTAs and had surgery. Most thought he’d be out for the year, but he still hasn’t been placed on IR and at camp people say he’s walking around with no brace or limp.

Update...

LT – CJ is recovering from a sprained foot. No time table for return
LT/LG – Ugoh is injured off and on
C – Saturday is recovering from surgery
OG – McClendon is out for some reason or another
TE- Santi is on IR
K – Swenson is on IR
CB – Thomas is recovering from an injury during the walk around of OTAs, may not be back for the season…

Any deep threats on the Colts this season?

It cost the SB last season. N.O. waited til the 4th Qtr to jump those predictable short routes.

by bignerd on Aug 9, 2010 12:30 PM PDT reply actions

Well we had one last year in Garcon but he will only be better this year and we got Gonzo who is looking great back.

That to me isn’t why we lost the SB though.

Only if they play a Wayne/Garcon/Gonzo package.

Then I could see them having him at slot just to try the mix. I fully expect Garcon, Collie, and Gonzo to rotate between those two spots with Gonzo switching between Slot and wide depending on whether garcon or Collie is out.

Correction, Gonzo has only had 2 injuries in his pro career that made him miss time.

1 injury for turf toe I think that put him out of one game, then the sudden snapping of his MCL.

This is a touchy subject….

Manning is about to sign his last contract. Fooch, on the other hand, is still young and hasn’t reached his full potential. Maybe if they sweeten the pot a little. The Colts have been good for many seasons now

however, their O-line last season was nothing to brag about. Great QBs like Peyton Manning have the pocket presence to get rid of the ball before it’s too late, so it can mask pass protection flaws. I did not notice any off-season moves to help the O-line other than releasing Lilja. I thought that was strange because I seem to remember Polian mentioned something about becoming more physical at the line, since the Colts were not very successful running the ball. So my question to you is are you happy with the O-line/not worried about it?

by ZeroOneInfinity on Aug 9, 2010 1:05 PM PDT reply actions

they drafted a guard in the 4th round, but speculation is that he's been pulled out of the competition at guard

to focus on being groomed as Jeff Saturday’s successor at center.

The line is unlikely to be worse than last years, but it’s hard to see a massive improvement with what’s basically the same group of guys, plus a few veteran cast-offs. I think the hope is that Tony Ugoh (former starting LT) finally has his head on straight and will take to his new spot at LG while they’ll get solid play from one of the numerous young interior guys who were lackluster last year, at RG.

I always like the underdog, and DeVan really did do quite a bit better than he’s given credit for. As I’ve made the argument before, its Diem that is the weak link in the chain. He basically necessitates a TE to help him block.

2) Do you think the Colts would trade Manning for Alex Smith and Kentwan Balmer? They’re both first-round picks, and Smith was number 1 overall, just like Peyton!

Taylor Mays will play bump and run on DeSean all day

and mostly nullify him. Mays is the only guy on the team that can run with DeSean. He plays right on the line of scrimmage and jams him hard enough to knock him on his 175 pound butt every play. If, and probably when he gets beaten, it will be up to the other 2 safeties to try to defend. Should they fail, Taylor might not be able to break up the pass; however, what he can do is swat DeSean’s hands so hard he literally tears his little girly arms off and then Mays can secure the ensuing fumble.

I stand corrected

So he’s won .500 of his playoff games and has been as good as Joe Flacco and Kyle Orton were last year over the course of his playoff career. Still a pretty significant drop off in play from regular season to playoffs. I’d rather have a QB that’s better in big games.

Interesting tidbits:

just started looking at QBs that I know had logged a lot of playoff games and Terry Bradshaw had one of the best improvements from regular season to playoff QB ratings, a 12 point difference.

Brady’s regular season and playoff ratings are almost identical to Manning’s over their careers.

Steve Young’s numbers were very close to Manning and Brady’s and looking back Young had a great career, but he did lay quite a few eggs in the playoffs.

I know what I'm talking about, I started at right guard for the 1992 College Park Falcons.

by Johnnysixnut on Aug 11, 2010 5:30 AM PDT up reply actions

It makes sense...

That QB ratings should drop in the playoffs. The regular season schedule has a lot of crap teams to inflate a QB’s stats. Most playoff-caliber teams’ defenses won’t allow for scores like 51-45 (ahem, Cards and Packers).

by peytonsurdaddy on Aug 11, 2010 6:07 AM PDT up reply actions

It's a fair point

And last year’s playoff run and SB were in my opinion the best Peyton has played over a post-season so I’m sure that helped his playoff stats.. I’ve made this point on a post on your boards before too, but as dominant as the Colts have been the last decade, really they’ve been even better than the Patriots in the regular season, they should have more rings and I think Peyton playing poorly in some key games is a big reason. In fairness I’d make the same criticism of Steve Young, but I know that’s going back an era.

Manning hasn’t blown his team’s chances to the extent that McNabb thew away Eagle playoff games and Romo is also on pace to be remembered for some serious choke artistry, I’m not putting Manning in that category.. I just don’t want to see his name mentioned in the same breath as Montana or Johnny U unless he puts together a playoff and SB winning run where his excellence is the reason for his team’s success in the playoffs rather than them winning despite his bad play (Chiefs wildcard game). It also annoyed me that he got so much credit during the Colt’s SB (winning) run and it was so undeserved because of the way those games played out.

A guy who’s played in the same time as Manning who I think should be rated higher is Kurt Warner, he’s just done more with less and his play has been best in the biggest games. He’s not nearly as funny as Manning is in commercials though and I find his faith annoying, so overall I like Manning better, but given a choice between the two of them in their prime, I’d take Warner. I’d also take Brees over Manning on any given Sunday right now and most especially in the playoffs.

I know what I'm talking about, I started at right guard for the 1992 College Park Falcons.

Good read and it makes some fair points. Some of it, in my opinion is just Manning apologist though and I think it has some of the same logic flaws that it’s accusing another article of and a lot of the evidence presented is anecdotal.

Examples:

First the article says this: “Kurt Warner is 48-37 for a .565 winning %. Manning is 105-55 for a mark of .656. Manning’s team have made the playoffs in 9 of his 11 seasons. Warner’s team’s have made the playoffs 4 of his 9 seasons (although in 2003 he only started 2 games for the playoff bound Rams which I didn’t count in either category).”

Later is says this: "The irony of these stats is that while Warner’s teams are 8-2 in the playoffs, Manning’s teams only went 6-4 in these 10 games. So Manning played BETTER than a guy who went 8-2, but his teams still lost. "

I shouldn’t need to explain the conflict between these statments.

Also: “The sample sizes are so small as to be meaningless. We’ve talked about this a lot, and you either accept it or you don’t. No one would claim that one QB is definitively better than another after 10 games, but that’s what CHFF does here. In fact, the sample sizes are so small, that one bad game by Warner could completely alter the numbers. If he has a bad game against Pittsburgh next week, his QB rating could easily plummet by 5-7 points.”

This is ridiculous. Athletes are and always have been defined by what they do on the largest stage in their sport, nobody cares who the fastest track guy is in practice, it’s whether you win the gold medal. “Sample size too small”… So Olympic athletes shouldn’t be judged by how they do in the Olympics because that’s such a small sample of their races? Give me a break, you can’t really believe that? Close your eyes and pretend we’re not talking about Peyton…you don’t really believe that do you?

Than there’s the Warner was injured more comparison.. News flash, Warner got hit a lot more than Manning, this article makes no mention of Manning’s superior offensive line..this article makes no mention of any information that might run counter to it’s theory. No mention of all that Warner played for an offensive coordinator who is well known to ask his QBs to hold the ball forever and take monster hits.

I can’t believe I’m defending Warner, I really don’t even like Warner, I hate the Rams, I hate Arizona and I’m not a huge fan of evangelical Christianity…anyway…

The AFC is a harder conference so Manning played against better competition…The Colts were a better team so he played with better competition too.

I know the article you’re referencing is a response to a perhaps biased article, but it’s pretty obviously biased as well.

I know what I'm talking about, I started at right guard for the 1992 College Park Falcons.

by Johnnysixnut on Aug 11, 2010 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions

OK.

1. Where’s the conflict? Peyton played better in that set of 10 games, yet the Colts lost 2 more games. Are you trying to say that it’s a conflict to say that the QB played better but lost more? I hope not.

2. Yes, I do believe it. First of all, this is not track. Even so, there are hundreds of other races every year that the track athletes participate in. They are judged by how they do in those too.

I don’t care if we’re talking about Peyton, Brady, Warner, or Ryan Leaf, you CANNOT judge how good a QB is and who is better by taking an extremely small slice of his games and shining a spotlight on it. You will never get me to say anything otherwise no matter how you twist the words around.

3. Peyton’s good offensive line ended after the 2006 season when Tarik Glenn retired.

There’s really no reconcile to a difference of opinion on whether postseason play should be weighed heavier than regular season play. All I can say is that I’m glad Montana and Rice were EVEN BETTER in the post-season than the regular season because it was awesome growing up to five super bowls (yes, I know he ONLY won four of them).

On the subject of guys who Quarterbacked four winning SBs, Bradshaw also had a QB rating about 10 points higher in the postseason. Granted his regular season rating was around 70, but still he played his best in the post season and has four rings.

I know what I'm talking about, I started at right guard for the 1992 College Park Falcons.

But then you'd still rather have Peyton than Bradshaw wouldn't you?

Even if you accepted the existence of Clutch performance it’d be better to have a QB with a 95 QBR in the regular season and 88 in the playoffs than one with a 70 in the regular season and a 80 in the playoffs.

I was going to say, if you are wanting "Clutch" then...

you should really look at 4th quarter comebacks. That is a display of extreme pressure where the play of a single player like the QB actually can be reflected.

I'm going to pass on this question

Because Bradshaw was before my time. There could be an argument made that all QB ratings were much lower in Bradshaw’s day, but I don’t care enough about this issue to do the research necessary to see if that’s even a good argument. I also don’t really know how good the pieces around Bradshaw were.

I will say that I’d want whoever I thought would give my team the best chance to win the Super Bowl so if Manning’s 87 in this era is better than Bradshaw’s 80 in the 70s than yes, I’d rather have Manning. If an 80 in the seventies is relatively more impressive, than Bradshaw gets the nod.

my problem with clutch as a commonly used concept is expressed in my sig

I think 192 games is a much better sample to evaluate based off of than 18. It’s not unreasonable to think that one playoff game tells you more than one regular season game given the higher level of competition and lack of anything being held in reserve, but I think it’s absurd to weigh less than two dozen games as anywhere close to as telling as nearly 200.

Kurt Warner has done more with less?

he never made a Super Bowl without an elite pair of wide receivers. not just one elite guy or two pretty good WRs or even one elite WR and one good one. we’re talking either Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce or Fitz and Bolden. not to mention Marshall Faulk was on two of his three SB squads.

no matter what he did with it, that doesn’t sound like he had “less” to me.

He shouldn’t be mentioned among the best that have played the game with an 8-8 playoff record and an 82 playoff QB rating. He shouldn’t get a pass for being the primary reason his team exited the playoffs so many times or for performing better in the regular season than the playoffs. The greatest players play their best games in the postseason and their stats reflect it.

I’ll concede that he’s played some very nice playoff games, but overall he’s been pretty unspectacular in the playoffs by tangible measures.

Let me ask you this, starting with the premise that the Colts have been at least as good as the Patriots for the last decade, why do you think the Colts only have one SB win?

Next question. If Manning had played as well as Drew Brees (spectacular) and if Brees had played as well as Manning (solid, but not spectacular) do you think that the Colts would have won the SB last year?

The year that the Colts won the SB, do you think they still would have won all three playoff games and the SB if Peyton had been injured in the first quarter of that awful, awful game against the Chiefs and Sorgi had had to play out the stretch?

Again, just opinion, but I think if the Colts had an “average” QB, they’d still have the same one SB win they have now.

4. The best players give it their all every game, not just the postseason.

5. By tangible measures, you mean 2 stats?

6. I’m not going to accept that premise, because that premise is false. The Patriots were the better team from 2001-2004 and 2007, both in the regular season and in the playoffs. The first time the Colts were better than them was in 2005. I not going to answer a question based on a false premise.

7. Once again, a question based on a false premise. Peyton was spectacular in the playoffs and Super Bowl last year. You can bring up the pick-6 all you want, but that was Reggie’s fault (not my opinion: http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2010/2/19/1302008/rufios-playbook-breaking-down). Peyton was great in that game.

8. WHAT?!?!?! You think Jim Sorgi would have beaten the Ravens or Patriots? Did you watch those games? The Ravens and Pats were both really good teams that year. Sorgi (or an average QB like Orton or Shaun Hill) wouldn’t have stood a chance against them.

9. That’s a load of crap.

The biggest thing is that the Colts offense was better than the Pats O for a long time

But our D was soooooooo much worse than the Pats D that the overall difference was that the pats were an overall better team.

Eventually both the O and D of the Pats declined enough that we passed them in recent years.

Also, the Super Bowl play from Manning was superb. He was completely on his game. The Receivers on the other hand, were not. They dropped alot more passes overall and no one proved to be a reliable outlet that game. Our Defense was also a massive mess. If our D had been healthier, we could have made up for our receivers. If our receivers had played better, we could have made up for our D. Manning had the passes on target and in the hands of the receivers. He did his job, the receivers didn’t.

I’m sure you guys watch more AFC games than I do and obviously more Colts games. Hey, if Colts fans are saying the Pats were a better team..not going to argue that one. And I guess if you guys are happy with your one SB, that’s cool..just seems low for all those great teams and first round byes. The Colts have won the most regular season games in the last 10 years though and set a decade record for 115 wins..but whatever, I’m really not arguing with Colt fans that the Colts were the best team of the decade..will you guys settle for second?

I honestly don’t know who the guy who wrote this is and was just trying to verify that the Colts had won the most games, but since he supports my point I’ll bless his journalism credentials and agree with him.

by Johnnysixnut on Aug 11, 2010 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Eh, no we claim best of the decade.

Years when we weren’t overall better than the Pats (like losing playoff games becuase our D couldn’t do jack), we were number 2. Then when we passed the Pats we stayed on top. When the pats dropped, they dropped well out of second.

We accept that we weren’t as good as the pats at the beginning of Mannings career because our defense just wasn’t there. The Pats leaned on their D heavily. The Colts had to lean on our O. We are happy with our SB win, but we aren’t content. Every year Manning steps on the field we expect to have a good shot at a Super Bowl. We are hopeful this year because our defense is finally healthy to start a season, which was key to our SB victory, and last years SB loss. The health of our Defense makes or breaks our post-season aspirations.

You really can't claim team of the decade....

60s: Packers
70s: Steelers
80s: Niners
90s: Cowboys

Why? Those teams won the most championships in a given decade. The 00s belong to the Patriots. 3 Super Bowl titles with a 4th AFC Championship.

Some of the best race horses during their career

Never won a Triple Crown. Some of the best international soccer teams didn’t come out with a World Cup title. In every sport there is a great deal of luck. The reason the Colts are the best team of the 00’s is because they succeeded DESPITE our deficiency at D. We won the most games in any decade because of the greatness of our team as a whole. Our Defense was a liability, while our offense was the single best in the league, but as a team we pulled out each and every win possible as a TEAM, either on the back of our defense, or on a final defensive stop. THAT is why the Colts are the best.

If you are going to base the "best" off of a single games performance

Especially given the fact you’ve got over 100 different pieces to the puzzle all making an impact on the result, then you might as well just pick a single game out of a hat and compare that. Who has the most super bowls in a given decade? You might as well have said, “Who has won the most week 12 games in the past decade?” The Super Bowl is a single game. It is a single point of data. The “Best,” in a DECADE requires alot more consideration than a single point of data.

because of the nature of football

a single game elimination playoffs is the best actually do-able way to decide a champion.

I find it hard to doubt though, that if it was realistic to play series or double elim, or just replay the single elim with the same teams, that you wouldn’t sometimes get different champions than what came out of 1 run of single elim.

The 2007 Patriots had a weak bottom half schedule, and only barely beat a Colts team that a ton of injuries. Honestly, last years colts team was more impressive than the 2007 Pats team in my opinion.

Also, Who doesn’t play every game to WIN. The desire to win any single game is no less than any other game. The difference is the repercussions.

LOL that's INSANE!

The ‘07 Pats were a thousand times more impressive than the ’09 Colts. They both lost the SB so that’s a wash. But winning that many games straight in the NFL is downright impressive.

BUT you play to win the SB, so the Pats had the worst collapse ever when they lost to the Giants. I’d rather see my team go 10-6 and lose in the WC round than go 16-0 and lose in the SB like that…..

How were the pats more impressive?

They played a weak schedule, ran up the score on the weakest of the guys, and had good health through the season.

The Colts played a tough schedule, had tons of injuries, AND didn’t even really play the final 2 games, meaning they effectively had the same record as the ’07 Pats. The Colts achieved more with less, and are therefore more impressive.

End of discussion. The ’07 made it to the SB hiding their defense. The ’09 Colts made it to the SB hiding the sudden lack of explosiveness in their offense.

I would have taken to the ’04 Pats and ’06 Colts over either of those squads.

So I’ll excuse you. When you are struggling to just get REGULAR SEASON wins, I’ll forgive you for simply aiming high and saying that one SB win is all that matters. Why do you think nearly every other professional league around the world has 2 championships?

Even take this case...

Who was the better team last year, the Bengals, or the Jets?

Obviously the Bengals. They were consistently better week after week, but the Jets got lucky, not because they were better, but because they happened to get favorable circumstances. If you are going to value titles, then the Jets were obviously “better,” but if you are going to value actual play, then the Bengals took that title.

Why do you think the BCS is a load of bull? If all you value is titles, then lets just stop playing the regular season and pick the 2 teams we think are the best and play a championship.

I couldn't think of any other close examples.

Every example is going to have problems. The fact that the Bengals faded at the end of the year is the wrinkle in this, but then again, the Colts could have put the Jets away for the Season, so they were 1 colts decision away from sitting out the post-season.

No one is believing his regular season win argument besides him.

BTW, who does he think he is talking to? He’s trying to lecture a fan base that spent close 20 years watching their team compete for a SB. Listen tad pole, we aren’t the Jags or Texan fans who can barely comprehend the playoffs.

We’ve been on the perennial playoff contender ship for a much longer ride and can unequivocally state that winning SB’s is all that matters. The 49ers have flushed down twice as many winning seasons as these Colts and their isn’t a single silver lining to brag about or cling onto.

You have another with 112 regular season wins, 4 conference titles, and 3 Super Bowl rings.

Honestly, it’s not even close. That’s not to discredit the Colts who were quite successful, but the Patriots had a more successful decade that is on par with the 60s Packers, the 70s Steelers, the 80s 49ers, and the 90s Cowboys….all who won tons of games and multiple championships.

Maybe its because you guys are in a down time for your franchise...

But the philosophy that you only have to win 1 game to be considered “great,” obviously hasn’t done you guys well. You NEED to win atleast 10 games to get into the playoffs, and you need to win atleast another couple to get to that one game. If you go in with the philosophy that winning any single game doesn’t matter so long as you win that last one is complete bull.

There is so much more to winning a championship than just winning A SINGLE game. Thats why I said you might as well say, “Who has the best record in week 12 games?” because a win is a win is a win. Where it comes, how it comes, etc is beyond the point. If you are going to base your whole mentality off of 1 set of games, then you are deluding yourselves.

I compared the resumes. The Colts had 3 more regular season wins, but the Patriots won 2 more conference and Super Bowl championships which push them over the top.

Great run by the Colts, but to say that the Colts are the team of the decade based on 3 more regular season wins (despite 2 fewer Super Bowl titles)….honestly, I can’t see how that argument even works.

The purpose of every team is not to win the Super Bowl

The Rams? I’m sure they’d like to win 4 games.

The Lions? 6+ Wins.

The Jaguars? Staying Jacksonville. /zing.

The Texans? Making the friggin’ playoffs.

The Colts? Win a Super Bowl.

Everyone says SB or bust, but fans have more realistic expectations.

In the case of team of the decade, you start at Super Bowls. Successful season is different though.

The 2000s Colts are successful, but I’m sure the fans would trade 115 wins and 1 ring for the Pats 112 and 3.

If the Rams were to give you an honest awnser they wouldn’t say they are aiming for a superbowl this year or were last year. They have a goal of probably .500 or at most playoffs but not SB. They know its not an attainable goal this year.

The Pats have had a weak schedule year after year. Winning games is easier when you play worse teams. The Colts won 3 more games while playing CONSISTENTLY tougher competition than both the patriots and steelers.

Whats more impressive, Florida’s NCAAF titles, or Mount Union’s? Florida played tougher competition so obviously they are better than Mt. Union.

an 8-8 playoff record is not that bad.

it’s extremely difficult to have a winning record in the playoffs when you frequently have a playoff bye week, as the Colts have over the past decade.

without playing in wildcard weekend, you would have to win your conference and make it to the super bowl just to have a winning record in that year’s playoffs.

It’s just not “that good” either. If you’re the best team in the decade in the regular season than you should be able to pull off a better record than .500 in the postseason. Now if you’re the 3rd or 4th best team in your conference for a decade than a .500 record in the postseason would be about what’s expected.

Hmmm, interior line?

1) Well, oddly enough, we aren’t sure. Technically we’ve had some movement of DTs to DE according to our initial depth chart, but we are hoping that was just a drunken tirade by a secretary.

As for the real depth, we’ve got Antonio Johnson and Daniel Muir. They are… Solid, i guess you could say. They provide basically 0 pass rush up the middle, but tend to clog the line. Our problem in the running game tends to be when there are late hand offs because Mathis and Freeney can get so far out of place that its only Mookie (Johnson) and Muir there to stop the run. That means a LB or safety (Sanders now) has to come up to make the play.

we are also hoping that Fili Moala out of USC will break the USC curse and mature enough to take over as our 3rd DT in the rotation. Currently Eric Foster is our 3rd DT, but he is kind of like Brock in that he is all of 265 lbs. or so, but is just a little slower than Mathis, making him a hybrid, but more of a pass rushing threat up the middle.

2) No. Polian will get Peytons replacement in a year or two and we’ll have our own Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings when Peyton decides he’s had enough.

the starters Antonio "Mookie" Johnson and Daniel Muir are solid but nothing special

behind them there’s Eric Foster who is undersized and playing a lot of end recently, but can be disruptive up the middle. Fili Moala, last years 2nd rounder wasn’t much of a factor last year, but his offseason progress has been talked up quite a bit and he’s got all the talent to be a big time contributor. The last guy I’ll throw in is Mitch King. He was a stud, 4 year starter at DT for Iowa. Didn’t catch on with the Titans as an undrafted FA last year but he fits what Indy does. He’s still a bit small, but not as undersized as Foster. He lived in the opponents’ backfield while he was at Iowa and I’m hoping he can replicate some of that as a disruptive 3-tech as he learns the system.

Just to clarify, CH's comments do not reflect Colts opinion.

He is an adament hater of Purdue and everything to come out of the school, so take his words with a grain of salt.

As for Painter, He has the arm and accuracy of alot of the 2009 first round QBs, he just has a major case of the jitters. His problem is completely mental. His technique and method is what we’d like, but we’ve got to break him of his fears. Thats why he’ll see significant time, especially with some first teamers. Hopefully we can build his confidence, and with Polian saying he’s our number 2 guy already that can help with the pressure. Painter has serious upside, but he is very delicate in terms of pressure, and I’m actually afraid week 16 will have completely ruined Painter as an NFL QB.

He’ll see a lot of time in the 1st preseason game. His recovery seems to be complete as he has been seeing a lot of reps at training camp. However, I think the Colts will probably try to slowly ease him into it the 1st couple of preseason games. From what I’ve heard he’s been looking pretty damn good at camp, though.
We’ve got quite a few talented guys fighting for that 5th receiver spot after Wayne/Gonzalez/Garcon/Collie. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot of 2nd-stringers after that first series.

I, personally, believe (and I DO NOT have any magical inside “sources” to quote on this) that if Gonzo is healthy he will emerge the #2 receiver. Garcon has some awesome speed and a nasty disposition (he may be one of the best blocking WR’s in the league behind Hines Ward), but there’s been a lot of concern about his hands. They seem to be made of a hard rock-like substance that doesn’t appear to be primarily designed for gripping a football so much as they are for stiff-arming guys in their faces and knocking them out. If he could get beyond those dropsies and all the illegal blocking penalties, though, and Gonzo comes up looking healthy then we’ve got a serious situation on our hands…
It’s called wide receiver heaven.

We want to see Manning own for the limited time he's out there...

And then we want Painter to throw less then 2 picks during the game. Just avoiding the ball getting into opposing hands with him would be a step up.

last year the 49ers were the only team to keep manning from throwing a touchdown pass in a game. the colts did win the game, it was close. but i EXPECT the 49ers to remember that game, and will be out for revenge, even if it is a preseason. DONT put manning on the field, mr. willis will make him wish he didnt play that day, and may put him out for the season. look out colts, the 49ers are BACK!!!!!

Ummm, no offense CH, but Painter at Purdue > Nate Davis at Ball State.

I loved Nate Davis at Ball State, but the level of competition was no where near the same. Its kind of like comparing Gonzo to Garcon coming out of college. Gonzo got second or third billing as a receiver and wasn’t considered great, while Garcon was the absolute man in D-III. In reality they are alot closer than most would have thought, but competition plays a significant role. I think all things being equal Painter has better physical tools, but Davis has better mental toughness. Although after last season I don’t think any rookie QB would have survived.

On the one hand, it should theoretically slow down our hurry-up offense and give defenses more time to make substitutions (so they don’t have to fake injuries all the time to get it done). On the other hand, we’ve been making moves to beef up our O-line in the off-season to improve the run game, so I’m thinking that the hurry-up might be slowing down a bit anyway. It’s a bit harder to run it with the bigger guys, especially later in the game as players tire.
Either way it’s definitely going to remove one of Manning’s weapons.

they didn’t he asked to be released so they obliged. not sure why he did that though.

by TheAngelsColts on Aug 10, 2010 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it was a mercy more than anything else.

They knew that with the way things were going Brock was going to be seeing less and less of the field even though he still had a few good years left. They just didn’t have a place for him anymore, and given how much he’s meant to the organization, they granted him a favor so he could make use of his last few “peak,” years for a team he could possibly make an impact for.

Problem is, not many teams are looking for a good, but not great DE/DT hybrid that lacks the speed of a pure DE and the size of a DT. He was a system player that is going to problems finding a place in a number of other systems. Still wish we’d kept him, but our roster is already full to bursting as it is, so maybe we cut Brock so we can keep Pierre Garcon V2.0 (Sam Giguere).

The only thing that came out was that he asked to be released.

The most popular theory (and one that I subscribe to) is that the Colts asked him to take less money (he was going to make way too much this season), and he refused and asked to be released.

Depends how many more years Favre waffles...

Currently, in terms of average Manning years, he is between 1 and 3 years from breaking every record except INTs. The longer Favre keeps dragging this out the longer it goes. Regardless, I think Manning will play past 40, simply because he has taken so much less punishment than many of his contemporaries.

I'd say no, because regular season wins are subject to diminishing returns

the difference between a 10 win and a 14 win season isn’t that big of a deal.

Adding extra wins would only get the Colts 1 more season as a contender (2001).

Mmmmm . . . I would not 100% disagree

Defensively they are finding some gems still. On offense not so much, I think Manning is keeping that ship running all by himself much like Young did in the late 90’s. I can’t see any of those young WR having that same kind of production outside Manning nor could I see that offensive line even being viable without great #18 constantly erasing all their sins. Also like the 49ers of the late 90’s, cannot find a RB to hold the job down no matter how hard the franchise tries.

by bignerd on Aug 11, 2010 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmmmmm............

1. Reggie is still one of the best in the league, Gonzo is awesome, Collie is a great slot receiver, Clark is still in his prime, and Garcon has one of the highest ceilings I’ve seen (all he has to do is stop dropping the ball). We’re good on receivers for the foreseeable future.

2. The offensive line sucks. I think we’ve established that now.

3. What’s with the Addai hating? I love him. He’s probably the best blocking RB in the league, has a nose for the endzone, always falls forward, has a nice burst through the line, and can catch the ball well. The only problems with him is that he can sometimes be tentative and you never really get to see his downhill speed. Donald Brown has potential if he would stay healthy, and Mike Hart is a massive fan favorite. The RB’s aren’t the problem.

they lost Marvin Harrison and Anthony Gonzalez last year and had 6th and 4th round picks at WR come in and tear it up. If they have a blind spot for talent it’s the OL, not the whole offense.

I think both comments missed point about your WRs. I’m not saying they don’t have talent. Am I am saying on any other roster these guys are still in the development stage and not producing so much on the field. Manning is the reason these guys jumped on the field and produced right away otherwise they’d be like everyone else’s young receiver “hoping they get it in camp”.

by bignerd on Aug 12, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I would say on any other team they'd actually produce more.

They were held back because there are so many of them. Manning had 6 consistent targets last year in Wayne, Garcon, Collie, Clark, Addai, and Brown. Now they are adding Gonzo and Guns. They may still be “developmental,” but the problem isn’t that they haven’t developed enough, its that there is only 1 ball, and only so much time. If Manning only had Wayne, Garcon, and Collie, each would be 1,000+ yard receivers, but because their are a half or dozen more reliable targets, their totals get cut down considerably.

I think you need to start looking at other offenses

Most teams don’t have a QB who can make two receivers look productive let alone 4-5-6 like you are complaining about with Manning. You assertion is kinda comical. Trade Garcon, Collie and Gonzo to one of twenty other teams and the QB can’t even figure out what those receivers are good at doing let alone the ability to find them the ball during a game.

by bignerd on Aug 12, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Collie is an extremely impressive slot receiver.

Garcon is an impressive wide receiver. Gonzo has amazing potential as both slot and wide. All 3 would be number 2 guys on a dozen teams. Other QBs may not be as good as Manning, but Collie/Garcon/Gonzo would have alot less competition. They get open. They do their jobs. A large number of other teams would LOVE to have them on their roster, even just one of them.

My point is the #2 WR on most teams don’t even produce. The 4th, 5th and sometimes 6th options in the Colts offense outproduce the 2nd option on most teams. It’s all #18, I’ll trade you the 49ers WR fodder and Manning will make them seem ultra productive.

by bignerd on Aug 12, 2010 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

But to be fair, a lot of teams only have 1 good receiver

and their number 2 guy is near useless. Improving the overall quality of the receivers increases the productivity. Having 2 good options to throw too makes both better.

But your point is well taken. Peyton Manning can make nearly anyone look good. He took a kid out of the crowd at Training camp and threw the ball to him and the kid caught 1 out of 2.

I don’t think the 49ers #2 or #3 receiver are useless it’s just that the offense/QB doesn’t know how to use them. I’m confident the 49ers could make Garcon, Collie and Gonzo look just as useless.

by bignerd on Aug 12, 2010 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I wasn't meaning the 49ers in particular.

The Rams could use any of the 3, so could the Browns, Bears, or Lions could. There are some organizations that struggle to field one good receiver. Some organizations like the Colts have too many good receivers.

This discourse has me thinking

That just as a whole 49er fans and Colts fans cheer their team and maybe view football in different ways. You guys seem a lot less critical for starters. I’m just surprised that there isn’t at least one Colts fan who is unhappy with the amount of success you’ve had in the post-season relative to the regular season because I honestly think SF fans wouldn’t be quite so quick to defend a star QB who didn’t play his best football in the post-season.

I really can’t picture 49er fans saying things about playoff success like “It’s too small a sample to validate findings..” I think we’d just be pissed off our team lost in the playoffs. OK, let me clarify this. Most of us think our team is on the cusp, this year most of us would be pretty happy just making the playoffs and a first round exit wouldn’t be too upsetting (unless we got blown out by Dallas or something, than we’d commit mass-sepuku). That said, I think the expectation is that this team will compete for and eventually win a Super Bowl before they arc downward and if they don’t…..even if they reach the championship game every year..even if they win 12 games for 8 years in a row..even if Alex Smith is league MVP….it will be a disappointment.

Short of winning a Super Bowl, Singletary (as high as most of us are on him right now) will have had a failed tenure if he doesn’t deliver a championship and I think he’d agree with that statement. We have no desire to be the Eagles of the last ten years, none (I don’t think Eagle fans are in love with being Eagle fans either, but that’s another story).

I think all the SBs in the 80s and early 90s have left us with an un-naturally high standard. We’re not fair weather fans, we’ll watch bad 49er teams, we’ll support teams during rebuilding, we just call it like it is and when we stink we’ll tell you about it.

Most of this is speculation as far as how I think we’d treat a 115 win decade with one SB win and an 8-8 playoff record, but I think although we’d cherish another SB win, we’d also be pissed off about the missed opportunities. I’m still pissed we lost to Washington in the championship game and the Vikings in the first round and those games happened over 20 years ago. The Washington game, I’m just mad at the ref that called THREE complete BS PI penalties on R. Lott, I mean just total BS calls Jerry Seaman I think is his name..what a douche, I mean no contact whatsoever..getting off topic..breathing..relaxing.. But that Vikings loss was tough to swallow, really that was probably the best regular season 49er team ever and they get blown out by the Vikings at home in the first round of the playoffs, disgusting..

Alright...

Look, man, no one is saying we’re happy we only won one Super Bowl. I mean, if you asked us if we wished we had one 1 SB or 5 SB’s of course we’d say 5 SB’s. Duh! And on the subject of disappointment: Of course we’re disappointed we didn’t win more Super Bowls. Aren’t you disappointed you haven’t won more SB’s? I think any team who has a shot at winning it in any given year is disappointed when they don’t go all the way. Every team that doesn’t win the Super Bowl experiences a missed opportunity, not just us. I personally think we should win a Super Bowl every year. That would be great! And the fact that we are in contention for that honor every season is pretty damned impressive, I think. I love being in the position to be disappointed every season. It rocks! It’s much better than pinning all of our hopes on that one year a decade when we make a run at glory and then totally blow the rest of the time.
The fact is, we’ve done what we’ve done and there’s no use bitching and moaning about it after the fact. You just pick yourself up, get back to work, and focus on winning the first game of next season. The end. Support your team and quit your bellyaching. There’s no point in “what if’s” and “Gee, wouldn’t it have been nice?”.
They are worse than worthless. They get you absolutely nothing.

Don't think we don't wish our team had won more championships.

Losing in the playoff is extremely disappointing.

Losing in the playoffs is just not the same as the QB playing bad. Peyton has played just as good in the playoffs and in the last few seasons better in the playoffs than in the regular season. A team can lose even though the QB plays well. For example when either of the two defensive captains are injured and the defense can’t even force a 3rd down (as in the 2nd half of the Super Bowl).

The defense was non-existing until 2004.

Peyton has one bad playoff game (the 2003 AFCCG). Other than that he has played just as well and in recent seasons better than in the regular season. The colts would not be a contender without him. They would not make the playoffs in more than one season (2005) in the decade without him – and they would have lost that playoff game anyway. Peyton Manning is the only reason the Colts have been competitive and a contender year after year. Peyton Manning IS the colts in this decade.

Sure, his playoff record would be better if he just didn’t single-handedly take the team to the playoffs when the OL falls apart, the receivers are injured, the defense decides to take an early vacation and Freeney or Brackett are injured.

"It's the greatest job in the world until Peyton comes off the field and you think his thumb might be broken and there's three minutes left in the AFC Championship Game and you're down by three to New England and you haven't taken a snap all year. Yeah, it's a great job until that point." - Jim Sorgi.

"If I couldn't play for the Colts, I would probably stop playing football." - Peyton Manning.

I wouldn't say Colt fans aren't critical

I’ve seen them be critical of their team. Heck, I’ve seen their game threads…on gameday, they demand perfection. However, in this case, I think they have a good deal of perspective.

They recognize and appreciate the historical value of the run by Peyton and their Colts. No fan base may see this kind of consistent, high-level of play in our life times so I don’t hold it against them that they’d look at the long-time value of this era. Sure, I bet they want more titles, but there’s no use in being bitter for years about something especially a football team. That doesn’t make them less of a fan, but it shows they can put it in perspective.

Even Buffalo fans now look at 4 straight Super Bowl losses with pride because they realize that no team is going to ever win four, or even three, straight conference championships again. The point being: each franchise has something they can hang their hat on, so you can’t criticize them for being proud of this as they should be.

It's different here

Steve Young had a good quote to describe it, something like “each season in San Francisco it’s a Super Bowl or a train wreck”.

It’s still that way, except fans have been expecting the train wreck in September and not January the last few years. A winning season isn’t good enough, ask Steve Mariucci.

Go ask Bucs and Saints fans . . . they fit one magical season stereotype

They wouldn’t trade places with the Vikings, Browns or Eagles.

Go ask Vikings fans right now. I think the Vikings currently have the 3rd best winning percentage in NFL history and are absolutely haunted by no SB trophy. I’ve chatted a lot with Viking fans, they don’t care at all about sustained excellence. They don’t consider it a badge of honor, they consider it a cruel curse. What they care about it seeing and feeling a SB trophy before them and their father reach their grave.

Has your Tour De France example apply? The analogy is being great one season compared to being the bridesmaid every season.

Just go ask them if you doubt me

See if the Vikings, Eagles and Browns fans are thrilled bragging about all their good campaigns with no trophies to show for it. Ask them how many good seasons they would trade for just one winner. Ask them if they would rather of had a Bucs or Saints track record for 40 years just to cash one in.

Saints fans wouldnt trade their SB win for ANYTHING sports related. all those years of mediocre football and one SB win is worth way more to them than having year after year of excellent football and no SB win. same with bucs fans.

Eagles fans suck so i personally hope they never win one. Actually I am hoping the redskins go win one with mcnabb at the helm so i can shove that in the face of every eagles fan in existance. They are all rude – throw crap at my team (and every other team) and dont know a good thing when its right in front of them.

I think Saints fans would be the wrong ones to ask

because they have never experienced sustained success. Of course they’re going to value the shit out of that SB trophy. I can’t think of a good franchise at the moment that would fit the Colts mold but perhaps the Raiders. Ask them if they’d take several years of sustained success even if it means never winning a Super Bowl? Bet they’d take that in a heart beat.

I think that is the big difference between the two franchises' fan base

Niners Nation has seen sustained success and championships. They’re a fallen franchise. The Colts Nation is a franchise that has spent most of its tenure in obscurity until the last decade or so. So we’re just enjoying the ride until Peyton retires and we return to mediocrity.

Therefore we don’t fret over opportunity lost we’re just happy to have had the opportunity to begin with. Maybe this year we’ll win it all and we’ll be ecstatic, but as long as they put the best team they can on the field and compete we’ll be happy. We’re dying to win another championship but if we don’t we’ll just move on because we know with Peyton there is always next year.

You're right

Good point. I just take issue with the guy who said the Colts were the team of the decade, then they all try to back it up by saying the Pats 3 SB run is somehow less than their 1 SB. The Colts have been the most consistently winning team (at least reg. season) and are very impressive. But let’s not get foolish and say the Colts are the team of the last ten years when the reality is the Pats and Steelers have both done more.

by mr. instigator on Aug 12, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

No, its that your only justification for being "Team of the decade,"

is based solely on dominance in ONE game during the year for a decade. We were making the point that our definition, and the definition we feel is more valid is that CONTINUED dominance in EVERY game for the decade is what makes the team of the decade. No team is guaranteed a victory in any given game, and that includes all games in the playoffs, especially in the Super Bowl. The best team doesn’t always win, sometimes they do though.

That is why we are saying that while we are happy with 1 SB win, we aren’t content. We have come to understand and value that there is so much more to a season than just the one SB win. Look at the EPL (English Premier League). The best team during the season doesn’t always win the post-season championship. Same with the Champions League. The best team doesn’t always win. As 49er fans, if you cannot be happy unless you climb Everest every year, then so be it, but we Colt fans have learned that climbing K2 is by no means a feat to be disappointed in.

So lets not get foolish and try to pretend that we are going to agree. You value ONLY SB wins, which is, to be honest, a little New Englandy and naive. We value dominance, and the Colts, not the Steelers, not the Patriots, have been the most CONSISTENTLY dominant team of the past decade. The Patriots fell off, the Steelers fell off. The Colts haven’t. That is why the Colts are the team of the decade. The decade is alot longer and alot more than one SINGLE game, and that is what you have seemed to fail to understand in this whole argument. We get your point. We don’t agree, but don’t patronize us by saying that we are stupid because we don’t agree. We don’t agree with your conclusions because our valuation of the facts is different than yours. It's not just his justification though....

Everyone recognizes that the team of the decades as follows:

60s Packers. Why? 3 NFL Titles, 2 Super Bowl Titles.
70s Steelers. 4 Super Bowl Titles, 7 Playoff births in 10 seasons.
80s 49ers. 4 Super Bowl Titles, 8 playoff births in 10 seasons.
90s Cowboys. 3 Super Bowl Titles, 6 playoff births in 10 seasons.

Now what fits in more?
- 1 Super Bowl Title & an additional conference title, 9 playoff births in 10 seasons.
- 3 Super Bowl Titles & an additional conference title, 7 playoff births in 10 seasons.

In the 00s, the Patriots own the title. In arguments for the Colts, all I hear is 115. Consistent. Never fallen off. How did the Patriots fall off? They won 3 Super Bowl Titles and a 4th AFC Championship. They made the playoffs in 7 out of 10 seasons in the decade. They also won 112 games. So they aren’t the team of the decade because 3 regular season wins matter more than 2 more additional rings? There’s no luck for the Patriots. They were consistent and just a bit better than the Colts in the 00s.

I’ve argued that Colt fans should be proud of what their team has accomplished, but the team of the decade they are not.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 12, 2010 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions

But its for the decade, not the half decade.

The Patriots fell off at the end of the decade, and because of their playing style they didn’t sit at the end of seasons. They also stole 1 SB, and lucked out on the second.

Its not the 115 wins. Its the 115 wins, consistently over 10 years, while sitting out about a dozen games that would have been wins if we’d played, and playing distinctly harder schedules than the other two winning teams. Being a top 5 team for 10 years is better than being a top 5 team for 6 years, then a top 15 team for 4. Thats the argument. Its all about consistency. Being a threat for the whole decade is what makes the team the “Team of the Decade,” not getting lucky a couple of years, but then not doing anything the rest of the time.

Alright, I see where you're coming from

I don’t agree, but I get the point you’re making now. There’s a point to be made for 9 playoff births in 10 seasons….consistency that none of the other “decade” teams had.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 12, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks

I don’t begrudge people who value the high success of some teams even though they’ve had some down years. I just don’t like basing “success,” off of something as fickle as the playoffs. Its great to achieve that final victory, but playoffs are single snapshots, and require a great deal of Luck. Like the Giants victory over the Pats, it was a great deal of luck. I just don’t like the view that it is the only correct view.

As AJ said below, if the Colts had started their ascent earlier or later than 2000, then this would be a different argument, but because the Colts reign started in 2000 basically, as did the Steelers and the Patriots, who have swapped back and forth. The whole situation is a mess, and regardless of who is given credit, the fact is that the Steelers, Patriots, and Colts all have absolutely legitimate arguments, and while proponents of may poke holes in each argument, it is the total lack of respect for an argument that I dislike. I know I’ve spoken adamantly against just taking SB wins, but the argument is a valid one, just not one I completely agree with. Its kind of like the Stampede Blue argument that Garcon is a better receiver than Gonzo. Both sides have merit, and I don’t begrudge the opposing side of their opinion, I just dislike being told that my opinion doesn’t matter.

It hurts to acknowledge the Cowboys as the team of the decade in the 90’s. Trust me, I’d like to pretend the Broncos made a late argument. I think I could even prove the 49ers had more wins and playoff appearances than the boyz in the 90’s but it’s not an argument anyone will buy.

Anyways a lot of talk spun off from a preseason game. I think the Colts are legit SB contender this season. I thought they way over achieved last season, even as they kept piling on wins I thought they were quiet beatable. Because their young WR’s and defense gained so much experience last season they could be a fantastic football team this year.

I still think the AFC is a bit weak again this season so I don’t see a lot of challengers for the Colts to deal with. I’m not a believer in the Jets, possibly the Pats if they make strides can challenge. Can never can close the door on the Steelers but not thrilled about their prospects. The Chargers continue to be a running joke (although the Colts are the one team they can beat). Ravens don’t know how to call an offensive game plan, no thank you Fins, Texans fills like a stretch to call them contenders … so far.

by bignerd on Aug 12, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't get the hype around the Jets....

I honestly don’t. They were 7-7 when they got 2 “easy” wins. They won 2 playoff games against a depleted (physically and emotionally) Bengals team and the always overrated Chargers.

This year, they have a tougher schedule…their best player is unhappy….they got rid of their best RB for someone who’s pretty near done….they added a bunch of players so team chemistry is in question….

And yet, everyone wants to call them AFC East champions and Super Bowl contenders…..

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Aug 12, 2010 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm right behind you there

they snuck into the playoffs last year and then proved why the playoffs are just as much as a crap shoot as they are a measurement of the best teams. No chance in hell the Jets were better than the Chargers or the Bengals for that matter. Now they’re being anointed as the next coming of the 80s Niners. Puhlease.

yep....

Antwan Odom would have led the league in sacks had he not gotten hurt so early in the season.

And they did it being . . .

both the #1 defense and #1 running team last year. The odds of them duplicating both feats again this season are moot. They might make up some some ground in the passing game but even dropping off from #1 to top 5 in those other categories is typically a significant difference. Not to mention key parts of that run defense/offense are rather old with a serious risk of injury.

by bignerd on Aug 12, 2010 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

the issue with those teams listed

is that they are also the most consistently dominant teams of their respective decades. This decade is a bit of an anomaly because the Colts were consistently dominant and the Patriots finished on top the most. Every other decade the consistently dominant and best finishers were synonymous. Which is the reason this decade is even an argument.

I can see it both ways. Colts/Patriots

yep....

I dont know if

there even is a “team of the decade” for 2000-2009.

The Patriots won the most Super Bowls, but every single one of them was in the first half of the decade.

Team of the early 2000’s, sure. Team of the 2000’s, i think not.

yeah

every other decade has been pretty cut and dry. This one has been a cluster sexual activity. If you’re using the SB argument then the Pats win but would you honestly put the Steelers above the Colts? Surely not. If you use pure wins the its the Colts but they only won one SB. So………. Yeah it is very complex to crown a team of the 2000’s

yeah, he was a rookie last year.

without him, here is our 2009 draft:

1. WR Michael Crabtree
5. ILB Scott McKillop – currently on IR with career-threatening injury
5. QB Nate Davis – yet to see action in the regular season
6. TE Bear Pascoe – couldn’t even make the practice squad, currently with NYG
7. S Curtis Taylor – currently our #5 safety, might not make the team
7. DL Ricky Jean-Francois – looking good at NT while Aubrayo Franklin holds out

so basically unless Nate Davis turns into a franchise QB, our 2009 draft was Crabtree, RJF, and nobody in between.

Rough draft

But McKilloop showed promise as a backup ILB and ST aces so there’s hope for him when he comes back.

If he becomes a quality backup and if RJF turns it on this year that would make three quality players out of the draft, which is actually pretty good when it comes to drafting.

I’d also argue that McKillop will be the next Ulbrich, which is great for a 5th round pick. Plus Curtis Taylor has progressed well.

excellent points,

however, i’m still not convinced that scott mckillop will be able to salvage his career. he already wasn’t a great athlete and a torn patellar tendon can have a lasting effect on your speed and agility. and i’m sure having a torn ACL in the same knee will complicate his rehabilitation.

If you can get a #1 WR and starting NT in one draft than it’s fairly successful considering the difficulty at finding players at those positions.

Have to examine the 2008 draft. A starting guard and #2 WR aren’t as bountiful.

hmm... looking back, i think i may have been too harsh.

crabtree was a great value at an important position, and getting a starting NT in the late 7th round in unheard of.

it’s not like they could have foreseen coffee’s early retirement or mckillop’s injury, and the 2nd and 4th rounders both went towards mike iupati, who is already looking excellent against first-teamers.

nate davis has plenty of upside for a late 5th rounder, and while it’s true that curtis taylor “might not make the team,” as i said before, i still think it’s more likely that he does make it.

so really the bear pascoe pick is the only one that scot mccloughan deserved to be smacked for. smacked or demoted to spying on the seahawks.
