49ers Roster Transactions: WR Jason Hill signs with 49ers

Well that was certainly quick. The 49ers announced they have signed former WR Jason Hill and released CB Tramaine Brock. The team also released LB Bruce Davis from the practice squad.

I'm curious if this is meant to give Michael Crabtree a kick in the butt, or if the team wants Hill for his special teams prowess. Any thoughts on this move at this point in time?

Ted Ginn must be a little more injured then originally thought.

Also Special Teams might have been worse then coaches thought. Looks like Philip Adams, Kyle Williams, and Josh Morgan are the primary returners.

I love this move

I feel we might have been good to develope Tremaine Brock but Jason Hill is needed.
He will challenge Josh Horgan and crabtree.

I hope to coin a new name for jason- sure hand with two feet in Hill.

Welcome back home Jason Hill!!!!

Sounds right.

The move is perhaps more a reflection of Ginn’s injury, and what’s his name’s toe not healing.

Crabtree couldn’t focus on the game as he was still trying to figure out what a diva was and why people were calling him a diva… This week he’ll be ok, i shot him an e-mail saying he’s not a diva he’s technically a divo, since he’s a guy. So all is well

More is expected of him

Obviously. But last year, he was only given a handful of plays that weren’t too difficult and he could use his talent to make plays. This year, he is expected to know the playbook inside and out. I think he is struggling with taking it all in. I think his lack of complete knowledge of the plays is keeping him from being lined up correctly, running good routes, and playing faster.

by agchee on Sep 14, 2010 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

And also keeps him from making a tackle after an interception?

I don’t think lack of playbook had as much to do with it as lack of effort did.

by jonesin25 on Sep 14, 2010 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Just another opinion concerning Crabtr ...

Given his I-don’t-need-practice position, his milking a minor injury into avoiding practice and all pre-season games (creating Favre-like seperate rules from teammates), and his piss-poor play in the Seattle game, I would just as soon sit him on the bench until he decides that he (1) wants to become an adult, and (2) really wants to work at becoming a decent player. Until then, if it ever comes, I rather play somebody who you know will give it full effort — Zeigler. Maybe less talent, but a LOT more reliable.

I hated the release of Hill, and now I’m stoked to see him signed back on, also it is because they want to put pressure on crabtree and other receivers, Hill can be what we envisioned when we drafted him, he just needs a chance, sucks we had to release a CB since we are thin on depth on that posiotion as is.

by Lyken84 on Sep 14, 2010 4:28 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, seems like Ginn is more injured that we thought. It’s a good move, Hill knows the offense, can play on special teams for us, and fill in here and there at WR. Not really a big move. I think he’d still be behind Ziegler on the depth chart for NO.

Wow.

If that’s true, which it probably is, then Raye really is the bumbling old man he’s characterized to be by all his detractors. How in the hell could he not call the plays right w/ the correct verbiage and then expect Johnson to read his mind? No wonder Alex Smith is so pissed off.

I like Sing and think he’d be a great position coach, but overall it’s clear w/ stories like these that he doesn’t have the skills to run an entire team—especially in the heat of the moment. I’m off the kool-aid. BUT, to avoid too much pessimism, I’m still hopeful for a solid season—just think we’d be better off w/ an experienced coach.

good article

heres a concept: why not have Jason Michael sit in the booth with Raye and collaborate on plays, then speak it over to Mike Johnson, who relays it to A. Smith? Seems like it will rectify the translation issue at hand, and ensures clear communication since Raye will not speak into any sort of head set. Bonus: Jason Michael could make sure Jimmy stays awake the whole time and change his adult diaper when needed!

by Jayhov on Sep 14, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

i have a feeling

this will basically happen mid-season…Raye will still be OC in name but Johnson will be doing the play-calling, and at the end of the season Raye can retire gracefully.

by Rep the Bay on Sep 14, 2010 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Raye can consult from the booth and help draft game plans during the week. MJ can call the plays thus eliminating the play clock issue and hopefully the lack of creativity issue.

Sing said

“that’s why Jimmy’s here…[to call plays]”

uh…no, a lot of QB coaches or HC’s call plays even though they have an OC on staff. OC comes up with plays, game plans, etc. Play caller is someone with a better view of the game, what’s going on, adjustments, scenario, etc.

I hope you are right.

I seem to remember having a good feeling about Hostler. Under Norm, Alex was doing great and everybody figured keeping Hostler (same offense, play calling, etc) would continue his development. It didn’t happen, and we ended up with the worst of our 7-straight OC’s… not because he was bad, but because I think he wasn’t ready. So the question is… is MJ ready?

It's not whether you win or lose... no, wait... of course it is!

by W.Tyler #26 Kicks @$$ on Sep 14, 2010 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I never had a good feeling about Hostler. It was like Nolan was stuck with him after Norv bolted and always came across that way. Hostler didn’t even sound prepared to take the job, his noted plan was try to mimic Norv.

The few articles about Mike Johnson paint him as a driven guy. While working his way up the NFL ladder he’s used his precious spare time to go learn offense from different practitioners with different philosophies. I don’t even think he shares a lot of philosophies in common with Raye but hitching himself to Raye was his opportunity to move into an eventual coordinator position.

by bignerd on Sep 14, 2010 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, I'm sold!

I didn’t like Ray from the start, so you’ve convinced me. Call Sing and tell him I approve of his changing OC’s! It’s not too late to have 8 OCs in 8 years! And that will give us another year of excuses for Alex! (ha ha – sorry, couldn’t resist!)

It's not whether you win or lose... no, wait... of course it is!

by W.Tyler #26 Kicks @$$ on Sep 14, 2010 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Why?

I do based simply on the fact that he’s not Jimmy Raye. But beyond that, he’s a mystery. Actually he seems to have presented a problem according to the yahoo article, since Jason Michael was the guy last year, and we really didn’t have that problem until he and Mike Johnson switched roles

by mr. instigator on Sep 14, 2010 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

But they did have these issues last year.

They had “headset issues”, blew timeouts and had delay of games all over the place. I was willing to give Sing the benefit of the doubt last year as it was his first real season, but he clearly isn’t figuring things out. This is becoming unacceptable.

by jonesin25 on Sep 14, 2010 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

You are right

But the article I read basically said those issues didn’t happen, at least not as dramatically as on Sunday.

I dunno. I want to be OC for just one game.

I honestly think I could do better than Raye, just give me the playbook, I’ll come up with a strategy, script some plays and have a bunch of contingency plays ready for any situation.

I promise to keep it mixed up and the defense will not be able to expect what’s coming. I’ll sub different players, use creative packages and throw down field from time to time.

I will call play action on 1st down, I’ll take shots deep on 2nd and 2 and I’ll have runs designed to go OUTSIDE. I’ll be the best OC we’ve had since Norv Turner.

Crabtree

Apparently not everyone was listening to the radio, but Plummer really blasted Crabtree – and not just for running bad routes and failing to make catches. He didn’t seem to know where to line up, and had to be helped by other team members. At one point Smith had to reposition him on the other side. One has to wonder what’s really going on – is there an elephant in the room we’re not talking about?

by Bumpkin on Sep 14, 2010 4:57 PM PDT reply actions

I posted above

I really think he is struggling with the playbook. Sing said that he wasn’t sure Texas Tech had a real playbook with the spread offense. If he’s struggling with playbook, the mistakes will continue for several weeks and his production won’t look anything like last year.

So get someone to TUTOR both Crabtree and Nate Davis on the playbook.

Kill two birds with one stone.

In the above Yahoo article it says that Johnson is now getting the calls on the sideline and not Jason Michael, so why not have Michael tutor these two?

They have only three healthy receivers

If there were any injuries on Monday we’d have to throw out the spread formations Smith is most comfortable in. The team is nothing if not tremendously/notoriously conservative under current management (grrrrrr), so that explains that. Of course, the gunners didn’t exactly have me forgetting about Hill on Sunday so that could also have been a factor.

Guys it’s a depth move. A guy get’s hurt, you replace him. You need guys to practice with, and as insurance if you sustain another injury at the position. See: Wilhelm, Matt. A guy we picked up when Ulbrich left just to have another backup…then TKO got hurt a few times and it’s a good thing we had SOMEONE to stick in the game, even if he blows goats. Trade Crabs the cancer now while he still has trade value. If you don’t, he will fake an injury and go on IR and then be worth nothing.

He doesn’t want to be here and its so obvious, its stupid. He will never play his heart out here. He will go through the motions and only do what is necessary and that cancerous attitude will destroy the locker room.

But this would not be a problem had we kept Robinson. Granted, keeping Robinson has nothing to do with Ginn getting injured, but weakening ST made the injury more detrimental. Well...

There’s a difference between those two in my estimation: Smith played very well for most of the first half. Crabtree didn’t play well at any single point.

And to add to the difference, Smith is a well liked leader, yet when you see a team captain getting on the guy for his attitude, it makes it much easier to get low on him because it makes him seem like a prima donna. I really don’t buy that he should have sat out all of the pre-season games.

Basically, my point is I find people ragging on Crabtree as more justified than ragging on Smith. Granted, Crabs is young, and Smith has been around a long time with little success, so either way I understand why people rag on each of them. Doesn’t mean I agree with it, but I understand it.

Either way, I hope they both have success. That’s why we’re all 49er fans in the first place, right?

To clarify one of my statements

When I said “when you see a team captain get on a guy” I meant to switch the subject from Smith to Crabtree.

Touchdown Forty Niners!

by Effage on Sep 14, 2010 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Biggest difference actually...

is that 31 other teams would take Crabtree on their roster while it is highly unlikely Smith would be playing in the NFL but for the eternally springing hope and bottomless sympathy for his plight of our front office… and fans.

This is not to say that Crabtree’s ornery demeanor couldn’t change that over time, just that in the NFL, raw talent is a very wicked temptress.

by BKisforSF on Sep 14, 2010 7:24 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Frankly, I think the Smith bashers are not the same people who are here getting down on Crabtree. For one thing that group is too busy bashing Smith to pay attention to anything else. For another, this is a completely different beast: Crabtree has the appearance of being a diva while Smith can never be accused of that.

Wouldn't work for three reasons ...

1. Crabtree wouldn’t accept the fact that Rice is better than he is.
2. He’s too self-centered to accept instruction from anybody else.
3. He will never be willing to work as hard as Jerry did.

I think more players and young coaches should do this but the reaching out has to come from them. If you want to improve in what you do it’s up to you to ask for guidance from people who excelled in your field of work. Otherwise it’s just some former player preaching to you about how things were in his day and what he did to be great.

Sign Jerry Rice as an assistant WR’s coach if not the main WR"S coach, that would be tremendous help for our present and future receivers.

Also

I remember seeing a video showing that Rice still does the same workouts he used to do when he played in the NFL, let him take our receivers through his routine and see how they do.

I think why everyone is so down on him is

because he physically showed a lack of effort. you could see it in the way he played and the way in which he half-heartedly dove for the tackle on the INT. He’s not playing with the same fire he played with last year in AZ for example when he slipped on a catch and still managed to get up and go for the 1st down.

geez there is alot of nonsense in this post

Hill was brought back for ST and whatever he can contribute on offense. He’s a veteran by being cut and resigned after week 1 his contract is not guaranteed its week to week now for him.
And with Crab guys get over seattle time to move forward. I love me some Crabtree but after sunday I was ready to burn my crab jersey without even wearing it yet. However I calmed down and realized I KNOW he will do what it takes to improve imediatly. Yeah last year seemed so easy because all he had to learn was the game plan for each individual week at 1 position. Yeah I expect more but now he has the whole playbook to know and from 3 different positions. Has anyone pointed out all his F ups where when he lined up in the slot. Apparently he doesnt know the scheme from there as well as he thought. But I am a believer that while of this pissing and moaning is going on here Alex and Crab are putting work to get this shtuf right!

It’s one dang game on top of another on top of another. Until this team becomes a winner, there is no it was just one dang game. Because it’s been one dang game for the last 8 years. Yes it was only the first game of the season and I still expect them to show up next week and win, but that one dang game was one to complain about for sure. And I’m pretty pissed off about the Crabtree situation too. I have a zero tolerance policy for not being prepared. I’m just on the fence about benching him. I guess I could only make that call if I were fully informed. We get a lot of good info, and we can deduce a lot on our own, but we don’t have ALL of the information. Maybe benching is what he needs. Maybe not. I certainly don’t want anyone coddling him though. If he’s got an attitude problem best to nip it now. If it’s something else then just deal with it accordingly and get his head in the game so he can contribute.

I think that you misunderstand ... it is NOT week #1 in Seattle that's the problem!

The guy is a egotistical diva …
Won’t learn the playbook;
Milks a relative minor injury to dog it for four weeks;
Thinks that he’s too good to have to practice and develop timing with the QB;
Refuses to play in pre-season games to learn the plays, improve his skills, and develop timing with the QB;
Then puts on the weakest performance — both in skill and effort — of anybody on the team.

And, he doesn’t seem to think that there’s anything wrong with this! “I’ll do better next week.” Bullshit!
Bench him until he decides to become an adult and is motivated to earn what he is being paid!

Other than that, I’m OK with Crabs!

P.S. And Singletary let him get away with all this B.S. How’s that for developing team spirit?

by 49erFanSince1950 on Sep 14, 2010 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions

i think your over reacting

you could be onto somethings or…..
He is not a diva…the guy is way too shy and insecure, is learning the playbook the X, Z, and slot this year most second year receivers are still learning 1 spot think about that seriously. It’s not just run this route from this spot. An NFL offense ok ok UFL/jimmy raye/NFL offense is very complex routes are based off what the defense does. the QB and receiver have to see it the same way.

Yeah this should have been done during camp but just because you and I(tailback all valley 98) have toughed it out through neck sprains doesnt mean, that if crab wakes up and his neck feels any little twinge hes not willing to further push it for practice and exhibition.
The trainer told sing he was banged up crab told him he was banged up thats it. I heard he leaped for a catch had his legs taken out and landed on his head neck. For that i say take all the time you need.He and Alex put in extra time during the off season and i GUARANTEE you while were on here crying about last week last year the last 10 years him and alex are trying to get better in a HURRY!
i wish we still had a Ike bruce like figure around. Who is he supposed to ask about in game on field adjustments. Ziggy is our best practice route runner but has not input for real game advice. And as much as i love him jerry insn’t the guy hes not a coach sure i’d love them to train together but like jerry said at the hall of fame the kid from mississippi is done running routes let him enjoy his retirement and media hoopla hes doing. He doesnt have time to coach.
We both want success but hold off on killing the team till week 8 atleast

So pointing out just Crabtree is making him a scapegoat. Yeah, he was bad, but I doubt benching Crabtree will fix the offense. However, Alex Smith can’t force passes to Crabtree if Crabtree is on the bench.

I agree we are the laughing stock of the NFL

Because who ever heard of an NFL player getting injured, I mean that is just absurd fire the training staff they should have done a better job taking care of our players. I think we should fire the training and conditioning coaches and get the world strongest man to replace him. He looks good and strong he will definitely be able to make all of our players like him.

OMG I can’t believe we signed a player because another one of our players got injured might as well just forget about the rest of the season right now. Fire our Front Office for trying to fix up some holes that we had due to injuries. We should replace Baalke with Bill Walsh he would know what to do and take us back to the Superbowl.

Don’t even get me started on our QB. Seriously Smith that dude was a bust as soon as he put on our jersey. I for one blame our QB coach we should have made Joe Montana our QB coach he was a great QB. Plus he can wear Step ups to the game and still be sponsored by them. The one thing I don’t agree with you is putting Carr in, if we are going to put in a new QB put in Davis that guy is going to be awesome and will lead us to the glory superbowl.

God damn it! Another coaching screw-up!

Releasing Bruce Davis from the Practice Squad is a mistake!

Granted that they have to sign Hill to replace Ginn for the short term.
I understand that you must make room for Brock on the PS, but why waive Davis?

It seems to me that the OBVIOUS (especially after Sunday) correct moves are:
Waive Moran Norris from the final 53. No other team will sign him.
Promote Jehuu Caulcrick from the PS to the 53.,
Sign Jason Hill to replace Ginn for the short term.
Move Brock to the PS (assuming that he clears waivers), replacing Caulcrick.

Why lose a potentially good OLB when you don’t have to? Come on guys, think about it!

Can ANYONE make ANY CASE for keeping Norris? The guy contributes NOTHING!!

Delanie Walker has been more reliable than Hill as a receiver. He could fill in for 4-wr sets. For help on special teams why not bring back Brit Miller who was doing an outstanding job on special teams and could fill in at fb or even ilb which he played in college? I hope Brock clears waivers. It would be nice to develop corners instead of pulling in other teams cast offs and giving them big contracts.
