49ers to Retire Jerry Rice's #80 Jersey on Monday Night
Earlier this summer we passed along the 49ers announcement that the team was inducting Jerry Rice into the Edward J. Debartolo, Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame. Players are inducted into this distinguished group when they either have their jersey retired or have been selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Given Rice's enshrinement at Canton last month, this was not an unexpected honor.
However, the final honor of Jerry Rice's 49ers career is officially at hand: the team announced today that they will be retiring Jerry Rice's #80 jersey at halftime of Monday night's game against the New Orleans Saints. Rice will also be the honorary team captain for the game and will be formally presented with his Hall of Fame ring before the game.

and show Crabs how a wide receiver is supposed to act

Two things, Promote Mike Johnson to be the new OC and hire Jerry Rice to be a Receivers Coach.
Also, get Ronnie Lott to coach the DBs

Honestly i think JR being the ''Honary Captain''is bigger then him getting his
jersey retired becuzz i know he will have a ‘’few words’’ =4 this team about playing ’’Hard’’all-the-time in ’’Practice’’to espcially about ’’Winning’’the division not just feeling ‘’Kurt Warner’’handed it us.

That would be so awesome
that I’d squirt all over if it happened.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
I remember when
Joe Montana’s jersey was retired, there was no way at all we were going to lose that game. I hope the same intensity is there Monday night as it is a similar situation.
Excellent!
The greatest receiver of all time definately should have his number retired. Hopefully it can provide some emotional spark and spur us on to victory!

Jerseys
I had planned on wearing my “Andy Lee” for all prime time games this year. Should I wear my old Rice instead for this game?
Anybody have thoughts on this?
A proud member of the epic "Green Thread" that was Pitts nonsigning of 3/24-3/25. Oh and I was there for there for the Carr nonpresser too.
Jerry Rice's jersey by all means.
it will honor the greatest WR of all time

Gotta be Rice
Whilst I think we can all accept that Jerry never made the sort of impact on the NFL that Andy Lee has, and will not be remembered ultimately as being in the same league as a player, Jerry did do some good things for this team, and deserves to be remembered by you, at least in the same breath as Andy.

Jerry only had a couple of seasons of being pretty good whereas Andy Lee has consistently been breathtaking. But I do agree to give Jerry this night. No one would disagree with a Lee jersey, even at the CHI-DAL game. God-like trumps hall of famer

Agreed
Give Jerry Reece, or whatever his name is, one night in the limelight, then we’re all back to the Temple of Lee.

even though he is 50
I would love to see him suit up and even if he has lost a few two many steps he could be a wr that knows how to run routes and catch a ball…something we were clearly lacking in week 1

Rice is a good luck charm
Anyone remember when Rice was signed to a 1 game contract to retire with the 49ers on 11/19/06? The game was against Seatlle and the 49ers won 20 – 14.
