You guys are too emotional about Alex Smith. I would swear he is related to some of you guys by how hard you defend him. He makes one good pass and it's, "Suck it Smith haters!" He throws a bad pass and it's, "F Alex Smith! He couldn't throw a fit!" Like he slapped your mom or something. I know it isn't the same people on both sides, but it is like everyone is acting like each pass is supposed to change everyone's opinions formed over 6 years of observation (yes, I know, he didn't play each season).
I am firmly on the "Alex is our present" fence. He is our best QB for the season, but I don't want him to be our starter after that. The only thing he is consistent with, is being inconsistent. This game has to be one of his best games in the NFL, but it was riddled with mistakes and bad passes. What makes it one of his best was his 2 min drive at the end. That is not something he has done well in the past. Making plays to put them in a position to win. But again, just like last game was just one game, so too is this one. The only thing that would move me away from my fence and closer to the "Alex is our future," is consistent play, EVERY WEEK. And that is how it should be for everyone. If your stance changes because of one game, one drive or one play, you probably didn't put much thought into it.
That said, cussing out everyone who thinks different than you will not change people's opinions to match your own. Alex makes one perfect pass, I am gonna say, "Perfect pass Alex!" Cause I am happy about the result, cause I want the 49ers to win. Just because I don't think he is a great QB, doesn't mean I think every single throw will be an INT, but I still don't want him to be the starter next year. If he has a great drive, I will say "Great drive Alex!" But, I am still on my fence. What will start changing my opinion of Alex is consistency. Hitting receivers in stride (you saw it today with the first TD pass to Gore, even if it was a bit high). Not occasionally, but regularly. Throwing the ball accurately. Not completions, but putting the ball in the best place for receivers to make plays. He does consistently throw high, he needs to cut that out, it is gonna get our receivers killed. He can run too. So instead of throwing it away every time he is flushed out of the pocket, he can run a yard or two out of bounds or slide. He did it in the last drive, but there were a couple times, in today's game, it may have made a huge difference. I still don't like a lot of his decisions. There is more promising signs from him, but not enough to make up for all the faults. Bashing me and other who are like minded won't change anything. And neither will manipulating stats to try to make Alex seem better than great NFL QBs.
The good news...
Our offense showed they can score. Last week, we had awesome drives, but no TDs. I do think we will do well this season. Our O-line is much improved after just a week. Alex showed some what I think you Alex Fanboys (not an insult) can't believe the rest of us don't see. Gore is still the man. Willis is still a Beast. Overall, we looked good today. We almost beat the defending champs. The only reason they won, was our own mistakes. I feel it was another game we gave away, we didn't get beat. I love our team. And I will love them even better when we get a better QB! SORRY! I had to do it :p
