Ask Arrowhead Pride: 49er Edition
Hey guys! Tomahawk44 from Arrowhead Pride. I just wanted to come over and answer any questions you may have about the Kansas City Chiefs. I will do a quick rundown below and then you can shoot away.
Yes we are 2-0. The games havent been pretty and we could of easily lost either game.
Our D has really stepped up this season.
Our special teams will be special. I dont know if you have watched either of our games but Arenas and McCluster are players that every team are going to have to game plan on in the return game.
Jamaal Charles leads the team in rushing even though hes not getting the touches everyone wants
Matt Cassel needs to step up his game if we want to keep winning

First I would like to send out a congrats on your good start....
I think you guys had a good draft, and some of those picks are definitely paying off. Now with a question: How do you feel the Chiefs offense will fair against the Niners D? Can Matt Cassell get it done?
Thanks :)
He will have to get it done but with that being said and the last two games I don’t think he’ll fair well. I do think we will try to run the ball at you and test you deep a couple of times. When Willis gets in the backfield it is done with, ball on the ground/turnover. We are hoping that Charlie Weiss works with him and picks some premium plays suited for Cassel. If he has another beyond poor performance I don’t know what is going to happen especially if we lose. There are already tons of people calling for his head and to put in Croyle.
Jamaal Charles...Enough said.
thank you!
Honestly,Im scared to death of your D. I hope we can keep Willis out of the game…( I know fat chance…) I think the only way we can beat your game is if Thomas Jones and Charles can run the ball well. I am not confident in Cassel at this point. I have only seen a couple of decent drives from him so far this season… So I guess the answer to your question.. Can Matt Cassel get it done? Im not sure.. I would rather put it on the shoulders of our RBs.
Chiefs Will
the only way we can beat your game is if Thomas Jones and Charles can run the ball well.
that doesn’t bode well for you guys. run defense might be our biggest strength.
Some people think outside the box. Some people think inside the box. Me? I got kicked out of the box, and they won't let me back in.
Yards allowed - 49ers are 4th
49er rush defense is 6th (at 63 yds/game) while Chiefs rushing offense is 5th (at 137/game). Strength against strength. Will the Chiefs live by the long run or die by the containment? That is the question.
Here are a few of the stats.

That turnover stat jumps off the page.

Sadly, it is mostly do to self inflicted errors
if they can fix the little mental errors, the Niners will be a lot better at holding onto the ball

i find it odd
that the niners are ranked 4th in total D but aren’t that high in either run D or pass D.
i guess 2 of the teams with better run defenses are terrible at defending the pass.
Some people think outside the box. Some people think inside the box. Me? I got kicked out of the box, and they won't let me back in.
OR, OR....OR
give us some credit. If your run D is excellent then teams will pass way more skewing your pass D stats.
I think the Chiefs just played a pass happy team in SD
and a no offense team in CLE. But you are right I have to give yall some credit I just don’t think that your run defense is better than ours.
The secret play, that every other team should know by now
is the screen pass. The Niners have decided that they will not defend that play. If you use the screen pass on every down, you will score at least 70 pts lol
by sanfranfanmdk on Sep 21, 2010 7:34 AM PDT up reply actions
But you see
We have to complete the screen pass.
So that makes it anybody’s ballgame from there on.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
Good point, TRS
Can the Chiefs execute misdirection plays and the screen? McCluster stopped when Cassel thought he’d keep going on a flair pass last Sunday. Not a lot of chemistry going on yet, with both ends of the passing game. And for all the complaining about Cassel’s long ball, he doesn’t have much touch on the short ones, imo.
We haven't seen a lot of screen passes from KC so far...
Even though we executed them very well in the preseason. I think they’re trying to keep some of the play book vanilla for now so we can try to upset the Colts (and maybe you guys). An ace up our sleeve, if you will.

I'm kind of surprised to hear that
with guys like McCluster and Charles who have track star speed, you would think the coaches would utilize that by giving them the ball out with space to run. I fear the big play right now because from watching the Chargers game, the Chiefs can be held in check all game long, but one well executed play to one of these guys could mean a TD.
So I guess the question becomes, do you think your coaches are not utilizing your playmakers correctly?
by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 21, 2010 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah
McCluster would be deadly on a screen. The thought of him out on a screen or quick out terrifies me.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
The thought of any screen's , make's me poop myself ...!!
I'm your " Huckelberry "...it's juz my game ...!!
ehhh
I think we need to get the ball in McClusters hands more. If we can get him in some space he could break some big plays… Maybe we will see some screens to him on Sunday :)
Chiefs Will
If you guys want to win
I have to say that would be the strategy. For some reason with all the great tacklers on this defense, we just don’t react well to a screen pass.
by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 22, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I think that was a more of a result of picking a poison. Would you rather have Drew Brees throwing down field or Bush catching a screen and Willis keeping an eye on him?

wow, you don't waste any time.
should be a good game, i look forward to the trash talking.
question: what do you think the chances are that the chiefs win? i heard on the radio that vegas has this game as a pick ’em.
Some people think outside the box. Some people think inside the box. Me? I got kicked out of the box, and they won't let me back in.
I think the Chiefs will have a slight advantage being at home
being 2-0 Arrowhead will be filled and loud. It will be a test for your young offensive linemen.. Just ask Philip Rivers. I do see this game going either way but a slight homefield advantage may help the Chiefs squeak out another close win
Chiefs Will
I see another tough defensive struggle.
Chiefs do well against the run, but the Niners do even better. Chiefs have let some long balls go to the house, while offensively can’t get any long balls to go into the house unless it’s from special teams. It should be a good game.

Jamaal Charles is good
but the 49ers are a stout run defense. We held Reggie Bush to 4 yards on 5 attempts and Pierre Thomas to 46 yards and on 18 carries ( about 2.55 YPC). Don’t underestimate Patrick Willis’ speed and the 49ers run defense. I know Charles is good, but he is a lot more likely to get a TD like from a pass than a run
Go 49ers
Please don't think i underestimate the 49ers.
They are my 5th favorite team right now, and M.Singletary use to play for my 4th favorite team the Bears. I think we lose this game, because Mike will have them fired up and pissed off.
While i have great respect for P.Willis he is a beast and i would love to have him on my team, don’t think our running game is a joke either. This should be a good test for both teams to really see where they stand.

I’ve got Charles on my fantasy team so I’ve been watching him these past 2 weeks and know he’s no joke. But you’ve got to understand our confidence in our run defense comes from the fact that we’ve shut down everyone from AP to MJD. So, anything less than them seems like an auto-shutdown.
I will say this though, Chris Johnson gave us trouble last year (like he did everyone else) and we tend to have more problems against quicker backs who like to get outside, so Charles has a chance. On the other hand, expect to be frustrated every time Jones touches the ball.

that is the million dollar question over on AP
Thomas Jones has been a good back but with less carries Charles still outshines him and has constantly outperformed Jones since preseason. Lots of people are starting to get aggravated about the little use of Charles.
here is the stats for both players so far below.. you tell me who you would give the ball to more:
Thomas Jones- 33 carries 122 yards Average 3.7
Jamaal Charles- 22 carries 141 yards Avrage 6.4 and 1 TD
Chiefs Will
The carries were split evenly at 11 each in week 1
Week 2, the Browns had gameplanned very well (and extensively) for Jamaal – and he was ineffective.
If you take away his ‘freebie’ 20 yard run with little time left before the half when Cleveland was in a deep pass prevent defense – Jamaal averaged 2.9 y/c on the day.
Jones was much more consistent against how the Browns were defending. So he got twice as many carries.
Honestly I think that’s as far as it goes. For some opponents, Jamaal is clearly the best weapon to use. For others, an even mix. And for a few, Jones. I think Cleveland was one of those games where our running game with Jones was going to be much more consistent.

I was curious because speedy RBs have been pretty successful against the 49ers and also I have Charles on my fantasy team. Luckily I didn’t need him to have a big game last week.

so what can you guys tell me about this Alex Magee guy
who is apparently starting in place of Tyson Jackson this week.
Some people think outside the box. Some people think inside the box. Me? I got kicked out of the box, and they won't let me back in.
Jackson is back on top of the depth chart
So he’ll probably be questionable all throughout this week. We will see what happens. Magee seems to have a lot of potential but we really haven’t seen much of him. Gilberry should be the bigger concern over Magee.
Jamaal Charles...Enough said.
Last week with Jackson hurt
We used our backup NT S. Smith in Jackson’s place to stop the run and then put W. Gilberry in to pass rush. Magee was just a rotational depth guy. If Jackson can’t go, I’d guess that’s what they do again.

My hopes for the Chiefs
First, to lose on Sunday. Don’t give it to us though. I want my Niners to earn this non NFC West road game.
Second, batter, bruise & beat the Cardinals when they come to town later this season.
Third, give the Raiders a double does of tail whippin’ this season.
Fourth, pull off an upset in Seattle so that Carroll sticks his pumping fist somewhere useful.
I also wish you guys a playoff victory within the next two seasons. You KC fans deserve it.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Thanks
We have a pretty good schedule down the stretch and a win next week could really help our confidence going into the bye and then to indy and houston. I am from the bay area so I root for the niners and follow them as well. Unfortunately this week I won’t be rooting for the 49ers but you guys definitely looked pretty good last night. If it wasn’t for all the turnovers the game would’ve been yours.
In terms of KC, our run defense has definitely improved from last season. Our front 7 hasn’t really changed but the improvement in our players and our DC has us playing better. I think our main weakness at this point is having two rookies playing safety for us. While both are talented and playing well for the position they’re being put in being rookies and all, their is still going to be mistakes and so far we’ve had two big ones that have resulted in two scores. Berry is an intelligent player so I think he’ll learn quickly to change his game so he’s not biting on the play-fake so hard.
Patrick Willis is the best linebacker in the game. Thankfully so far, our former first round pick linebacker Derrick Johnson has been playing up to his potential and is leading our team in tackles. So i look forward to seeing how he looks compared to the best.
Jamaal Charles is one of our best players yet he hasn’t been getting the ball too much. Our coach has said before he’d use whoever was playing better/gave us the best chance to win as last week Thomas Jones had almost twice as many carries as charles. Your run defense is outstanding so it’ll be interesting to see what type of offense game plan we’ll be looking at. So far we’ve relied on running the ball quite often, however our OC has stated if he feels like our best chance to win is to throw the ball 40 times a game then he’ll call it. And that brings us to..
Matt Cassel. In week 1, he wasn’t asked to throw a lot, and when he was a lot of the time it was on 3rd down, which everyone knows is the money down. You have to convert 3rd downs. His numbers weren’t great, only going 10/22 with 68 yards but he had no INTs and no fumbles. He did what he was asked to do. Week 2 we threw the ball a little more but he was less lucky in the turnover department with 2 INTs. Lucky for us our defense stepped up late and cassel led a drive late to kick a field goal to go ahead and we won. I think Cassel will be asked to throw more this game then the previous two. We’ll probably have a lot of quick passes to charles/mccluster out of the backfield. Our rookie tight end tony moeaki has been playing pretty well and hes likely to get some catches. So if cassel can have a higher completion percentage then he’s been having without turning the ball over and our defense can stop frank gore or at least slow him down, i think we have a shot. Plus, arrowhead will be damn loud so i know there was some issue with calling in plays on time or whatever and it looked like it was handled last night without any problems, they better find a good way to get them cuz alex will not be able to hear anything next weekend.
Good luck. Ill be cheering for you guys weeks 4-17, just not next week.

Moeaki has been pretty interesting thus far
If Cassel can get the ball in his hands consistently he might be able to take some deep shots with Bowe. I think the crowd noise might suffer a bit if Cassel starts to relive the 2009 sack fest though. Maybe you’ll all get your wish with Croyle. I actually liked Thigpen, but I guess Pioli rather have his boy Cassel.

yes Moeaki has looked very well. He has been a pleasant suprise because he did absolutely nothing in the preseason. Moeaki was actually the player I was least excited about in our draft class but he has made me like him very quickly.

Thigpen was never the future
at least, that is how I saw him. I can’t blame Pioli trading for Cassel. Chiefs fans might not like it, but at least they only used a second round pick to try out a potential franchise QB. I still think Cassel can be a franchise QB if the Chiefs can fix that O-line.

Brother in Law is a 9'ers fan
so this one’s especially interesting to me. I was impressed with how your team sucked it up and came back on the Saints last night. Shows character. The Chiefs lost 7 games by 7 points or less in ‘09. Now it appears the Red and Gold are winning those close ones. What’s changed? Probably the type of players the Chiefs drafted and otherwise have acquired in terms of mentally tough players.
Probably the biggest external impact will come from the fans at Arrowhead. They really bring everything a twelfth man could bring to the game.
I look forward to a well fought close game no matter what.

How is Eric Berry doing so far?
I saw a glimpse of the Monday night where Gates burned him for a TD. We seemed to have a love affair over him here before draft day, but a lot of people conveniently forgot that hes only 5’9". Are you concerned about potential size mismatches with one of the Niners 3 TEs?
I'd say that aside from 3-4 plays in the first two games he's doing fantastic.
As stated by a couple AP’ers above, Berry has been caught out of position or else biting on play action and then gets burned. We’ve held both opponents to 14 pts. so obviously it hasn’t hurt the team extremely bad.
But as a run stopper, he’s one of the top tacklers and he brings the wood. I think most of us are surprised by his toughness and the intensity of his hitting at this level.

He’s been directly responsible for 3 of the 4 TDs given up. He’s bit too hard on play action against CLE and got confused when covering Gates, and then Nanee. He’s making rookie mistakes.
On the other hand, he’s been a stud run defender. He has tremendous speed and hits the gaps fast. I don’t want them to tone down his aggressiveness, because it will hurt our run defense. For now KC seems to be content with letting the big play happen every now and then for trade off in solid play the rest of the time. He’s learning on the job, and once he gets up to speed and learns to recognize play action and understands his assignments better, he’ll be a wrecking ball on our D for years to come.
He also just missed a diving INT last Sunday. He’s swarming to the ball on pretty much every play. Any week now he’s going to get his first pick. Alex Smith better be careful.

And actually your off on his size.
He’s officially listed as 6’0", 211 lbs. You guys should feel sorry for having missed the chance to get him. I honestly think he was the best player in the 2010 draft, and I’m not just being a homer. I was making a case for KC to draft him all the way back in November.

but then the Panthers decided to be jerks and have a mediocre season.

To draw from my recent post here at NN ...
I don’t see the Chiefs offense being able to move the ball, but this game could very well come down to an average-to-good 49ers offense up against the production of a young and playmaking defense alongside solid special teams play.
I see it honestly coming down to that, simplified.

I was hoping the 49ers might draft McCluster - Reminds me of Mighty Mouse
but our FO doesn’t seem to be interested in all purpose backs. Bon appetit! I see he’s already showing off with that return TD. What else are the Chiefs working him into – reverses, reciving, sneaking out of the backfield, Harvin-type stuff?

They've tried to get him a couple of WR screens, and have handed the ball off to him a couple of times.
Dexter ran the wild cat in training camp and preseason… but whether or not we’ll ever see that on the field remains to be seen.

I'd love to see them run some McCluster and Charles in the backfield Wildcat this week.

To be honest I think we've done a pretty poor job of getting him the ball thus far
He was far and away the most explosive player in camp but only has a handful of touches to date. In the Chiefs defense he doesn’t seem to be much of a route runner (played RB in college last year) so it may just take time.

He’s our OW. Offensive Weapon. He’ll run the ball, catch the ball, return kick-offs and punts, be a decoy, whatever. So far besides the punt return, we haven’t had too much success getting him the ball in space so hopefully charlies got something up his sleeve this week for mccluster.

I read over the MNF 49ers live Game Thread that you guys had at Arrowhead Pride
Aside from the beginning of the game , you guys showed tremendous respect to the 49ers. Thanks for that, I’m sure 49ers fans appreciate that, but you guys are probably right that it would have been easier on the Chiefs to face a 1-1 49ers team than a hungrier 0-2 49ers team based on the way the 49ers played majority of the game (aside from several mistakes).
The previous games, other fans from other bloggers argued that some of their players are better than 49ers player with individual versus individual comparisons. Who do you think comes close, for example, to Patrick Willis or Justin Smith, or offensive threats like Vernon Davis?
Aside from the beginning of the game , you guys showed tremendous respect to the 49ers.

1. Please spank the Raiders twice, thanks.
2. How is your run stopping and pass rush? Our line is young and shaky, but I feel like our best chance to win comes if Gore can average 5 yards a carry, and obviously Alex Smith needs all the time he can get.
3. How is your secondary/pass D? I know Flowers is good and I wanted us to draft Berry, but do you think you have anyone that can cover Vernon Davis? Berry might be fast enough but Vernon is too physical.
4. How often does Cassel try to go deep? I feel like the weakest part of our defense is our secondary, especially on the deep ball.
I’ve got Jamaal Charles on my fantasy team, so I’ve been watching him. The Niners are going to shut down the run 95% of the time (especially anything between the tackles, so get ready to hate Thomas even more) but our one hole seems to be against quick backs who can get outside, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Charles broke a few decent runs off.
Jeaaaggaahh
1) We'll do our best (trust me!) but no guarantees
2) Strangely enough, our rush D has been great this year. I’m not sure anyone saw that coming. I think the biggest surprise has been Tyson Jackson. He and Dorsey have been bests in eating up blockers and preventing them to get to the secod level and have been getting great penetration. But, alas, our pass rush is still non-existant. We seem to get the QB to have to reset his feet, but we haven’t been able to get them down.
3) Our pass D is very good with the world of petential to be stellar. Most ‘experts’ have pegged our CBs as one of the best tandum in the league. As for Vernon, he’s a monster, no doubt. We played SD in our openner and did a great job of taking him away once we focused on him, using a bracket of Berry and Derrick Johnson. To be honest, this game hinges on you running game. If you guys can get Gore going, we’re in for a loooong day, but if you need Alex Smith to produce in a significant way, then the odds are in our favor. We have enough in our secondary to put two guys on Vernon and feel comfortable leaving the rest of our secondary on almost anyone’s receivers. The addition of our two rookie safeties and NB Arenas has enabled Crennel to be very creative in his coverages.
4) Cassel is absolutely nothing to be worried about at this point. Think Alex Smith circa 2006. Add to that the fact that the worst part of his game could well be throwing the deep ball (has the arm strengh but horrible accuracy) and, clearly, you have nothing to fear.
I’m just hoping for a good game. Personaly, I had us beating the last two teams and losing this one, so it would not surprise me at all. So far the Chiefs have shown they can win close, ugly games. If this game turns out this way… well, I like our odds.
Thanks for the answers.
Sounds like KC is going to be in for a long day if Matt is that bad of a QB, we devour most run games (with the exception of what I mentioned above). I guess it’s going to come down to whether or not Gore can get consistent yards, and how the turnover battle ends up, if we continue to hand over points it won’t matter how good our defense is.

I have to disagree with Lokrath regarding Cassel's downfield passing
He hasn’t actually attempted any deep passes so far this season. Last season he was actually pretty successful with the deep passes, most of them were put in a position where only the receiver could catch the ball. He actually had a few very nice deep fade passes to Bowe over the course of the season…thrown perfectly.
The biggest problem with Cassel IMO is that he makes his reads too slowley, allowing the defender to close and interfer with the pass. He also has a tendency to have his passes tipped at the line of scrimmage, which shouldn’t be an issue for a 6’4" QB.
Cassel might not be able to win the game for KC, but he probably won’t lose it for us either by forcing poor passes into INTs.
Predictions:
This year will be better
Just imagine how awesome
the Niners would be if you guys drafted Aaron Rodgers. Assuming that he would still be alive today, I think you guys would be a top 5 overall team.

I don't mind it too much
because I don’t think Rodgers would have survived here during those times (crappy OL, coaching changes, playbook changing every year). However, the biggest annoyance are the Packers fans who always bring it up like we had some control over what happened. On top of that, I do believe that Alex Smith would be successful if the Packers had taken him if we drafted Rodgers. I think it has more to do with what the Packers have and how Rodgers was given time to develop.

I got a question for the KC Fan's
What do you think is the main cause for Matt Cassell’s decline of play or lack thereof. I know he did red hot in New England, and then you guys picked him up last year. I actually like Cassell, but I don’t see enough of him games to see what happens.
there's a wide array of answers
but imo it’s the pressure
when he came to kc he had a big spotlight, big contract, and very little help to rack up good stats. (horrible O-line made of other teams’ cuts, WRs with stone hands, lead RB averaging 2.7 YPC, defense that couldn’t give him field position outside the 20.
even though things are better now, the moniker of “bust” has been hung over him and he’s having trouble getting out of his own head. can’t stop thinking about living up to expectations or failing out.
something big needs to happen to inject him with confidence, or he’ll never go back to his 08/09 form, no matter who’s around him.

Matts decline
is pretty much caused by his trade to the Chiefs. We straight up sucked last year.it screwed up his confidence. He will improve along with the rest of the team. we’ll be decent this year, but we’re really building for the next several years. 10 of our defensive starters are 25 or younger. All are ballers. we are ready to compete at a high level for the rest of the decade.

Kansas City Chiefs - 2020 Team of the Decade
A game of strengths and weaknesses, this is by far the craziest assesment i have made of a matchup.
Chiefs weakness on defense, long ball defense, 49ers offense biggest weakness making longball plays.
Chiefs offense weakness passing, 49er defense biggest weakness stopping the pass.
Chiefs OC can throw out plenty of screens, 49es cannot defend the screen.
Quick RB’s give the niners hell and the chiefs have Charles and McCluster.
49ers TE’s are mismatches for all of the chiefs LB’s and potentially safeties
49ers defense will shut down your run, Chiefs offense relies on the run
Mind boggling prediction to make, especially being at the Chiefs.
I want to kick the scheduler’s as for matching us up at seattle and kc in two of our first 3 weeks.
BOO, scared you!!! Blew you to Smitherines, Forget the Marines I have machines that like to spit and read mad magazines -R Noble
I think that's an accurate assessment
This is really a difficult game for me to guage, I have no idea how I expect it to turn out. I don’t necessairly agree that KC’s D weakness is the downfield coverage, though the 2010 stats would indicate that this is the case. Our two corners have been very good in man-to-man coverage, but the D has given up a few huge plays due to communication breakdowns.
I like to think that you guys will have an emotional let-down after the tough loss to SF and the players won’t be jacked up for the game, but sometimes the opposite happens. I do agree that the crowd noise might end up being a factor, but since you’ve already faced that in Seattle it probably won’t be as unsettling to Smith as us KC fans are hoping.
In any case, here’s hoping for an entertaining game!
Predictions:
This year will be better
The long ball is easily your biggest weakness on defense, if its easily fixable that means your defene is pretty stout, I think your run defense and pass rush are gonna get better.
Your Kung-fu is so-so, i had to laugh at the challenge.
I see a lot of talk about Vernon Davis being our biggest offensive threat and the key to the game is stopping him
but I hear very little talk about Frank Gore, who IMO is a bigger threat then VD. If Frank gets going he will be tough to stop, both on the ground and in the air. Someone over on AP said that Frank isn’t a top back in the league, which is funny since he has been, at the least a top 10 RB for the past few years, and Monday Night proved he still has it. I just hope the Chiefs coaching staff is overlooking Gore like a lot of Chiefs fans seem to be, it would be a very good thing for us.
"All during film, I'm calling him Bam-Bam, like from 'The Flintstones,' because he hits everything. He is the truth" - Chad Ochocinco on Patrick Willis

Morgan vs. Carr
Could be a big key to the game. Carr was getting burned in preseason, but has done pretty well so far. Carr stays with receivers, but doesn’t turn his head back to the ball.

How is Eric Berry’s ball hawking skills like?We know his aggressive ,hits hard (reminds me of Patrick Willis’s Passion),and plays well against the run defense.Do you think he will be able to intercept any of our QB Passes to the receivers?
Thanx.
Well...
He tries hard to get the ball but his timing is quite down yet in the NFL level. If your QB makes some bad throws or tries to force it in I can see Berry getting pick but most likely it would happen by one of the more experienced players at this point. I would watch out for Flowers side of the field because he is quickly turning into a beast and this is his 3rd year in the league.
Jamaal Charles...Enough said.
He has been used a lot in run defense
And got burned a few times in pass coverage. He has also had 2 pass deflections that frankly had he caught would have been a great catch for a WR let alone a SS. His reactions and speed out of the break is unheard of and if a ball is left in a position he is an electric returner.

Question based on your season expectations
You expect KC to have an excellent pass defense but poor run defense. It’s only been two games with one opponent being a poor marker, but do you still anticipate that? If so I feel even better about the Niners on Sunday. When Gore is able to have a 20+ carry 100+ yard game, he gets into the end zone at least once and opens up the passing game. Since I don’t expect KC to score many points this would seem to fit what the Niners will try to accomplish.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Much of the expectations about the run defense came from a couple things. The first is from having no real upgrade at NT. Edwards was the weak link last season but it seems that the signing of Shaun Smith & better play from Wallace Gilberry has alowed Edwards to play fewer snaps which, in turn, has kept him playing at a higher level for longer periods.
The second is pure youth. Tyson Jackson struggled in his first season (not uncommon for DL) but Dorsey has performed well since he came into the league, contrary to what the media says. While Jackson was out last week (and most likely this week) he played very well the first game. Dorsey, too, has looked like a genuine high first round pick so far. Derek Johnson has finally looked like the linebacker we’ve been waiting for since he was drafted and the others have done a fine job so far, too. The run defense has been the team’s strongest point in the first two games of the season.
The pass defense itself hasn’t looked bad. When there have been problems it’s because of the young guys in the secondary. Two rookies both starting or playing substantial time at safety have given up nearly all of the points the D has surrendered. CB Brandon Flowers is one of top players on the team and should be considered with the best in the league.
If someone asks you if you want extra mayonnaise you have to say yes, cus that's part of it.
-Jared Allen
The prediction is based on previous experience and overall bad coaching in the past.
We have 4 1st round picks in the front 7 so our run defense should be stout, no coach has been able to bring out that talent. Based on the first 2 games Crennel has been able to. Our pass defense being so low is really just 2 big plays that were surrendered by Eric Berry. Young safeties have to learn and he has bit on play action too much this year allowing big pass plays. If you take away those big plays we give up 125 less passing yards and move our passing defense up to 11th. As Eric Berry grows and matures this pass defense will be scary.

Thank you both for your analysis
Especially about Dorsey who, from afar, I thought was not living up to expectations. But that’s hard to assess without watching the team and when any team losses more than they win it’s easy to assume a guy is not playing well. People have made many incoreect assessments about various Niners players simply because the team was not winning more often.
I’ll be interested to see how your run defense holds up for a full game vs SF, assuming that the score does not get out of hand thus causing a change in gameplan.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Whats the plan on stopping VD?
If you are going to double or triple team VD than how are you going to stop the run?
So if we double team VD in the pass game it effects our run game?
We knock him at the line with an OLB throwing off his timing then we have Eric Berry ride him all game.
I would bet that Frank Gore doesn’t break 100 yards this week and that Alex Smith and your young O-Line struggle with 2 delay of games 4 false starts and 2 timeouts burned.

Kansas City Sports hasn't had something to cheer for in about 6 years.
The fans are out in mass dusting off the Red and i expect that stadium to be packed. San Diego struggled and they have an experienced line. With such a young line i think it spells problems for you guys. I do love drafting 2 lineman early though.

And I think we drafted two very good ones. Iupati is already a beast and Davis shows some good signs. A full year under their belts is going to do wonders for them and the team.
"Careful Grasshopper ~ that's a god you're mauling." Master Takeo
Eh
Your former prediction not likely to make a difference. I don’t think you understand how special a talent VD is. Your LBs will wear themselves out trying to knock him, to say nothing of him blocking them on running plays. They over-focus on him and Walker or Gore will make plays catching the ball.
As for Gore, if we win he’ll likely break 100 or be very close. O-Line? I think four false starts is a bit much unless we’re down all game and playing catchup. The timeout thing is a bit over blown; only one from the Seattle game was due to the play coming in slow. They wasted none in the second half. We’ll likely have one but so will KC who had to waste one in the opening game despite playing at home. I think having to burn one per game happens to every team once every other week (except Indy).
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
Just a head count if there are 2 people on VD and 1 on every other receiver (unless you leave a man fully open which I am not against)
That leaves 7 people to block against a 12 set. 7 people may have been able to stop Mathews but do you have enough confidence in your front 7 to stop Gore.
VD's job is to block for Gore first
They can worry about VD breaking loose after we’ve “established the run”
Coach Boone: And who's team is this, Gary? Is this your team? Or is this your daddy's team?
Bertier: Yours.
Coach Boone: Now get on the bus. Put on your jacket first and then get on the bus.
I'm confused 7 people blocking against a 12 set?
If you have 2 WR and a TE then we have 7 in the box. We don’t have to double VD on rushing plays unless you mean you guys run a ton of draws without a TE blocking i’m not sure if you do that. Does VD not block on rushing downs?

This is a typical I-Formation against our base 3-4 on a pass play. A , Hali or Studebaker, should chip Vernon Davis, B, Johnson or Belcher, should then play inside him and force him outside, C, Eric Berry or Kendrick Lewis, should then cover him over the top. The safety not double teaming is free to play zone coverage. The OLB after chipping is free to pass rush or cover the outlet pass.
In a run defense situation I trust our D-line to demand 5 blockers they have been doing it all preseason allowing our LB’ers to take on the FB and RB at the hole.

Thats a 21
But I get what you are saying. I was just counting the people on my fingers not actually picturing what is happening. Seems interesting will you be doing the same thing to Walker he is just like VD except he can’t block and is faster (VD said that Walker is faster).
Now a two TE two WR one back set we could possibly use our 2-4-5 nickel defense that has been very good
That defense would probably not be able to man up and would have to play a zone defense and just hope that they can confuse smith with their zone schemes

hopefully we use that more often it works really well. Maybe even a 3 TE 1 RB set of course our third TE would be in the place of the FB.
I hope you do, because it would be easy for us to motion our TE to the FB spot and ram the ball with gore.

We've been there
2-0 last year became .500, 2-0 in 2007 became 5-11. So the truth is we weren’t a 2-0 team as much as we were a 5 win team with an easy early schedule.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I wouldnt say we have had an easy schedule so far
1. vs San Diego W 21-14 (tough game)
2. @ Browns W ( I can put that one as easy)
3.vs 49ers ( very big test)
4. bye
5. @ Indy (Very tough)
6. @ Houston another tough one
7.vs Jags ( very winnable)
8. vs Bills ( again winnable)
9. @ Oakland ( normally we split)
10. @ Denver ( another split)
11. vs Arizona (winnable)
12.@ Seattle ( toss up)
13. vs Denver (split)
14. @ San Diego ( tough game)
15. @ St.Louis (should win)
16. vs Titans ( tough game)
17. vs Oakland (split)
As you can see we are a 2-0 team with the hardest part or our schedule at the beginning of the year. we could very easily put together 8-10 wins this season.
Chiefs Will
So far
Chargers in September and Browns. Pretty easy, but small sample size. Did I read that KC has beaten SD like nine straight times in September, including the 4-win Chiefs in SD three years ago?
It is odd the early parallel to the ‘07 Niners (which I think you are by far better, especially at offensive coordinator) who opened with the late MNF opener then an ugly road win vs a bad opponent. I had KC coming into this game 2-0, losing to SF and going 8-8. I don’t think the Chiefs are a bad team, I think they’re the second best in the AFCW and ready to make their division a KC/SD slugfest the next few years. SD’s advantage will be Rivers whereas KCs will be defense and the running game.
It’s way to early how to know how good KC is or will be, since the same squad is as close to 1-1 as the Niners are. The schedule does give you an opportunity to finish with a winning record if you can go 6-2 or better at home and go 3-1 in the four Raiders/Broncos games.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I didnt realize that stat about SD in September
but I still dont buy into that stat either way. The last 4 times we have played the Chargers in September where 07,03,00,98. That goes all the way back to Andre Rison and Rich Gannon in KC. They are both totally diff. teams now.. I dont look into stats like that too much.
Browns are easy. I can give you that. Im not saying we are a great team because I know we are a long ways from that but the Chargers was a tough game. This game on Sunday will help me learn a lot about my Chiefs. The 49ers will be a tough matchup.

Which isn’t true, a rain game is tough for both teams. And a home opener is always a challenge. San Diego lost their calm in a hostile environment, an environment that the niners will have to endure with a young offensive line and a questionable leader at QB.

Your Kung-fu is so-so, i had to laugh at the challenge.
That is not a good reason though
The Chargers knew all off-season that they were not getting those guys back, so to call them their #1s would be like if we lost Gore to FA and said they won because we didn’t have our #1 RB.
The Chiefs found a way to win, and I was impressed by that Monday night game. Give credit where credit is due.
by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 23, 2010 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Similarly...
If you think the Chargers are still really a good team, and that it was a great win, you’re thinking to yourself, “Wow! Saint Louis held their own against the Cardinals, who won a playoff game last year!” When, in reality, they’re a completely different team now that they’ve lost Warner, Boldin, and some others. The Chargers are still probably the favorite and still probably a decent team, but they’re certainly not going to be winning 11 games this year. A good win, at home, against a passing team in the rain that is notorious for starting slow… but not a great win.
The Chiefs found a way to win
Same could be said for the Niners of 07 after a gutty Monday night win against a decent team followed by a come from behind win against a bad team. The Chiefs are almost certainly better than that Niners team, but the parallels are pretty eerie.

Some people think outside the box. Some people think inside the box. Me? I got kicked out of the box, and they won't let me back in.
This supports what i'm saying.
Pro teams scout if you have a specified blocking tight end and a second receiving tight end we can change our players based on who we see you trotting out. All teams do it and just because you have 3 good tight ends doesn’t make it different. In fact it almost helps us. I see no deep threat burner which is what has got us so far.

If it were that easy to defend the top TEs in the game, well, you wouldn't have any top TEs in the game
Because they’d be so easy to defend by just having a LB beat them up at the line of scrimmage. As others have said above, VD is not DeSean Jackson. Stadium design
Husky Stadium has been recorded as the loudest stadium in the nation. This is in part due to the stadium’s design; almost 70 percent of the seats are located between the end zones, covered by cantilevered metal roofs.

I hear you
It sounds like they’ve improved for sure. But I don’t worry about stat rankings this early. I think the Niners are #4 in fewest yards, #6 run D, but #30 in points allowed and are 0-2. Nine of those allowed points are from the offense (INT-TD and safety). Turnovers in our own end led directly to ten more. If they’re as good as they should be this will even out over the season.
Flip side the Niners are #10 in passing offense. I expeect that to dip a bit and the running stats to improve simply by winning games (thus being in the lead and running more often).
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Bertier: Yours.
Coach Boone: Now get on the bus. Put on your jacket first and then get on the bus.
I know man. I thought the suggestion was ridiculous too. But I can see the logic of why fix it if it ain’t broken.

Hey, at least it was early in the game instead of late. High snaps are one of the few things that people can criticize a center on because of how visible they are. Point is, that line did not let Alex get that much pressure. Protection was solid for the whole game pretty much.

I'll take a safety and zero sacks any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Sacks kill drives. A safety is two points, but giving up 5 sacks is worse.
Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it, sing doesn't show his cards that much.
he never even gives direct answers, the only one he did was about Reachal.
Your Kung-fu is so-so, i had to laugh at the challenge.
Which is really annoying
He gets emotional but then he doesn’t let it out like a diary won’t tell you whats inside but spills all of its emotions out.
We held two of the better returners in league (Darren Sproles and Josh Cribbs) to not much. They didn't even come close to breaking one.
We game planned pretty well against them too. Against Cribbs we kicked away from him and short and high to give our coverage units time to get down to him. Honestly our special teams in general is probably our best unit . We have Ryan Succop and Dustin Colquitt as our kicker and punter respectively. Both are very good, probably top 10 at least. Our protection schemes usually work well too.

They're coming along
Hali doesn’t get a ton of sacks (about 8-9 per season) but he draws a lot of holding penalties, even against the best LTs like Joe Thomas & Ryan Clady. Wallace Gillbury is an undersized DE, but he’s consistent with getting pressure on the QB, and Dorsey has started coming into his own this year as a pass rusher as well. Overall the team doesn’t generate a lot of sacks, but they do consistently generate pressure, so it’s not like Smith is going to have 5 seconds to sit back in the pocket waiting for a receiver to get open.
Predictions:
This year will be better
