Official Niners Nation Fantasy Football advice and support thread
Since many of us play fantasy football, and some of us are in more than one league, I thought it would be helpful if we had spot where we could come and hang out to talk about our players. Griping, complaining, moaning and cheering are welcome here, as is advice (both wanted and unwanted), and any questions.
I'll start off with some pieces of advice and then a question.
Some sleeper players to pick up
Bruce Gradkowski is worth a look at QB--in one half he picked up 10 fantasy points. The Raiders offense will be better with him at QB.
In a related note Lois Murphy should fare better now as well.
If you need a RB to pick up Mike Tolbert is worth grabbing since he's supposed to be starting on Sunday with Ryan Matthews injured. He's also used down in goal line situations so he might be worth hanging on to for that reson.
Likewise our very own Anthony Dixon might be worth picking up, depending on how many touches he'll see at the goal line.
Those are some free pieces of advice, and they're probably worth exactly what you paid for them. Now on to my quandry.
In one of my football leagues I have Carson Palmer as my starting QB, and I just picked up Bruce Gradkowski. Palmer is normally a reliable 20-25 pt per week option, but he's struggled this season and last week earned me a whopping 6 points. Gradkowski earned 10 points in the second half of his game.
Next week the Bengals play the Panthers and the Raiders play the Cardinals. I think the Raiders are gonna come out passing to show confidence in their new QB, which means he could earn quite a lot of points. However the Cardinals secondary is good enough to get a couple of interceptions off him, negating those points.
I haven't seen enough of the Panthers this year to know how they're doing, so I can't judge if Palmer will have an ok game with them or not.
My gut says to go with Palmer but I'm worried that Gradkowski will have a breakout game and/or Palmer will suck again.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I picked up Tolbert in my fantasy league, mostly because I didn’t want my opponent (who has Mathews) picking him up. Defense wins championships, baby!
I may hate your timing, but I can't hate your reason for leaving. Vaya con Dios, Glen Coffee.
Oh, and I voted Palmer
Seems to me that the Cards and the Panthers are pretty much a wash defensively, and that the upside on Palmer’s receivers is higher than that of the Gradkowski’s.

I need help too
I’m in a big time money league and I have to determine my starting TE between Owen Daniels vs. Cowboys D and Marcedes Lewis vs. Eagles D. Any suggestions?
Mercedes Lewis is very inconsistent.
But Daniels has really fallen off this year.
I know he’s still “injured” but he barely sees any passes go his way.
I don’t like to tell people who to start though, I just give out info.

I've been surprised by how poorly Daniels has shown so far too.
I guess not everybody can be like Welker. I’d be inclined to take a look at Pettigrew if he’s available in your league, since we all know that Shaun Hill likes to throw to backs and TEs against pressure (and the Packers bring pressure). If I had to choose between those two, I’d choose Lewis.
I may hate your timing, but I can't hate your reason for leaving. Vaya con Dios, Glen Coffee.
Don't forget
The Lions also have Scheffler no?
Who will Shaun throw to?

You mean the Vikings bring pressure....
because the Lions play the Vikings this week.

Daniels is getting nothing these days
But Cowboys bring a lot of pressure, you might see a lot of short passes to Owen.
Vs. Tight Ends
Coach Boone: And who's team is this, Gary? Is this your team? Or is this your daddy's team?
Bertier: Yours.
Coach Boone: Now get on the bus. Put on your jacket first and then get on the bus.
On second thought
Philly D has been sucking lately.
Coach Boone: And who's team is this, Gary? Is this your team? Or is this your daddy's team?
Bertier: Yours.
Coach Boone: Now get on the bus. Put on your jacket first and then get on the bus.
I'd have to go with Lewis
I have Daniels in another league and he’s been a huge disappointment thus far. I don’t think he breaks out this week either.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Owen Daniels
Lewis had too many targets last week, regression of the mean thing.
Conversely, Daniels is too good to keep having bad weeks. Play action against the Dallas 3-4 defense ought to buy him some catches unless Andre Johnson is continually torches the Boyz over the top so their is no need to ever checkdown.
The Panther's secondary was supposed to be quite good this year.
Just keep in mind that the Raider’s DMac has been on FIRE recently and it’s a guarantee that the Raiders will feed him the ball as often as possible.

Michael Bush is back healthy.
I’m not starting Bush this week, but they seem to like him much better in pass protection, which means that he’ll probably get some of the passing game touches that DMac has been getting.
I may hate your timing, but I can't hate your reason for leaving. Vaya con Dios, Glen Coffee.
I really doubt that
D-Mac has looked unstoppable lately. And we all know he has old man Al Davis on his corner.
Look for him to get another 20-25 total touches.
Bush is probably only going to get like 10.

Michael Bush = Ron Dayne
Cut him or trade, he sucks but hasn’t had the opportunity to prove it to anyone
My turn
Update on Michael Turner’s injury?
I have Snelling on most of my teams since I know he’s the back-up guy whenever Turner gets hurt.

Is there any reason why I should start Hines Ward over...
Moss (vs. Buff), Crabtree (vs. KC), Malcolm Floyd (vs. SEA) (my starting receivers)
OR
Mike Williams (TB) (vs. Pitt), or Mark Clayton (vs. Was) (my other bench receivers)?
Remember, Chaz Batch is the Steelers’ starter…
I may hate your timing, but I can't hate your reason for leaving. Vaya con Dios, Glen Coffee.
I think you answered your own question lol
“Charlie Batch is the Steelers starter”
The order I would start would be Moss, Floyd, Crabtree, Ward, Clayton, Williams
by sanfranfanmdk on Sep 24, 2010 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions
Which Moss?
If it’s Santana Moss you just have to temper your expectations because Cooley seems to be ahead of him in terms of targets.
If it’s Randy then there is no reason for you to be mentioning him, he’s a must-start every week (except the BYE of course)
I know I said I don’t like to tell people what to do, but there is no chance in hell I would ever start a PIT WR with Charlie Batch at QB.
Unless they’re down by 3 scores, they’re not going to pass more than 20-25 times.
Hell they had like 65 passing yards last week.

Hines is a decent option
If anyone’s going to score a TD for the Steelers this week on offense it will be Hines Ward. I’d put him over Crabtree, Williams and Clayton.
Okay got one for you
Need a Third back this week, Sproles or Buckhalter. Sproles not the starter but could see the ball more. Buchhalter is starting because No show Moreno is out again…lol What do you guys think which is worthy of a pick up?
VD is a good thing and nobody wants to catch Crabs this year
ouch
I have Moreno in a league as well. I added Buckhalter. Personally I’d say go with him over Sproles.
by David Fucillo on Sep 24, 2010 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Sproles
Denver also has Lawrence Moroney who will take away carries from Buckhalter
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
sproles will still get some carries
and he’s used as a receiver too.
last week he had 37 yards on the ground and another 63 receiving.
The Broncos have been really struggling with running the ball 70 yards against Seattle and 75 against Jacksonville—those yards were split between two backs and will continue to be split. Moreno had a nice receiving game against the Seahawks (63 yards), but I don’t think Buckhalter will be able to find the same success as a dual-purpose back.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Is he ready though?
They brought him in to be the goal-line back.
Does he know the offense?

Tolbert looked pretty good last week
82 yards on the ground, another 13 receiving and two tds.
Sproles had only 37 yards rushing but 62 receiving.

Should have picked up Tolbert.
He’s going to get the start and he’s much more effective than Sproles.

I think Denver has a good offensive line while Indy’s defensive line is bottom tier against the run. It’s possible Indy will just blow the Broncos out leaving no rushing attempts. However I don’t see Sproles as an effective RB against the Seahawks. Lofa has always been pretty good sniffing out those gimmick/gadget plays like screens.
WR help??
I need to start 3 from this group:
Steve Smith nyg
Michael Crabtree sf
Percy Harvin min
Dez Bryant dal
Demaryius Thomas den
Jordan Shipley cin
I think that any 3 of these guys can breakout anytime soon…..or i’m just being optimistic because i drafted them…..whichever the case may be, I really need some help on deciding which 3.
As of right now, i have Bryant, Crabtree, and Thomas in my starting lineup……
Steve Smith
Dez Bryant
Michael Crabtree
Pery Harvin is buried on the depth chart in Minnesota. Figure in Favre’s piss-poor play and Harvin’s recent migraine and I wouldn’t expect him to get much action.
Demaryius Thomas just came off an injury and is somewhat in the same boat as Harvin.
Shipley will be lucky to see any action with T.O., Ochocinco, and Jermaine Gresham ahead of him on the receiving list.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
Smith
Giants are facing the Titans. Their secondary has been pretty solid the first 2 weeks….opponents? Oakland and Pittsburgh(no Roethlisberger)….
Thomas had a solid week last week, I dont see him in the same mix as Harvin, Orton is playing much better than Favre, Favre has no trust in Harvin….
Bryant is complaining about sore ribs…
In my league according to total points through week 2: Thomas, Shipley, Bryant, Smith, Harvin, Crabtree…its pretty amazing.
After all is said and done…..I still dont know who to play…..I’ll figure it out by Sunday 9:55 am pt
by sundaysfinest on Sep 24, 2010 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Too many people on here drafted Crabtree...
Is Harvin going to play even though he missed practice with migraines again?
Your WRs are abysmal man.
Look for a trade or else you’re going to lose a lot of games waiting for these guys to break out.
(break out candidates should be stashed on the bench).

but my RB’s are prety stacked….
Arian Foster
Rashard Mendenhall
Lesean McCoy
Beanie Wells
Maybe I should try to trade one for a WR…
by sundaysfinest on Sep 25, 2010 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions
oops
I have McCoy in another league….my 4th RB is Shonn Greene..
Does this sound like a reasonable trade offer?
Shonn Greene,Michael Crabtree, Steve Smith for Donald Brown, and Greg Jennings….
The other guys RB’s are terrible just as terrible as my WR’s. Besides Frank Gore, this guy is hurting for RB’s. He has Donald Brown, Anthony Dixon, Benjarvus Green-Ellis, Fred Jackson.
Do you guys think I’m offering too much? Not enough? I totally agree with chikmagnet on me needing a wideout….the other option for this trade would be Santana Moss instead of Greg Jennings…

by SportsChicken on Sep 26, 2010 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions
1. Percy Harvin – if he’s going to have a breakout week (he will at some point) it would be likely at home against the Lions
2. Dez Bryant – got his feet wet last week. Facing the Texans which means Dallas will have try for my points while the Texans defense is soft. He’ll get one TD.
3. Demaryius Thomas – Why not? A complete boom or bust pick. All my built up fantasy indicators say no but NE is a slow, thick headed defense that’s been painfully slow to adjust to opponents talent. Plus the rest of your options suck this week.
4. Steve Smith – not a player I’d ever like on my team because he either plays well in surprising moments or does a lot garbage collection at the end of games, either way a bit unpredictable. Still your other options kind of suck so maybe either of these scenarios will play out Sunday.
5. Michael Crabtree – What I don’t like about Crabtree this weekend is the 49ers can jump out to an early lead they may try to ride out conservative playing calling while the Chiefs offense gets shut down. If Crabtree doesn’t get stats early it’s possible he might not a pass in the 2nd half.
6. Jordan Shipley – Don’t know much about him but I’m guessing he’s a slot guy. Ya, I don’t play slot guys because most games their stats line suck with the exceptions of Wes and occasionally Gonzo.
Your big decision is between 3 & 4. If you think you need lots of points gamble with Thomas. If just need some mild production than Smith is the safest bet.
Rotation of RBs/WRs
I’m curious what people think on this:
In a league that does not reward PPR I’ve got to start an RB and a flex player and have Moreno out this week. I just added Buckhalter quickly off the waiver wire and have to choose between him and Browns RB Peyton Hillis. The Broncos rushing game has been weak, and they could really be playing catchup this week against the Colts. On the ther hand, the Browns and Hillis are heading to Baltimore. Not a great matchup.
I have a flex position too and would choose between one of the two above not chosen and then also WR Steve Breaston and WR Mike Sims-Walker. Thoughts?
Sims-Walker
is a good option. He didn’t get anything thrown his way the first week, but last week he had 10 catches for 105 yards and a TD (he also fumbled the ball in that turnover happy game).
I really think that Moroney in Denver means less carries for Buckhalter.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
choices
One thing I do like is that all but the Browns game are scheduled for 1pm pacific. So I may go with Hillis at the RB slot and then I can take my time figuring out between those remaining three for the flex position.
by David Fucillo on Sep 24, 2010 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions
injury
Breaston has been limited in practice…i think he’s questionable…..it could be probable by today though…Sims-Walker had a wake up call last week, consistency is obviously the key.
On the RB situation, I personally think that Hillis will have a more productive day than Buckhalter, that’s not saying much considering that they’ll both be producing low this week.
by sundaysfinest on Sep 24, 2010 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Just go with your best player
It might be Sims-Walker.
He’s a bit of a feast/famine guy but considering your other options…..

Palmer
He’s going to have a good season. Just keep riding him especially if Bruce is your 2nd option.
ok here's one
Niner’s DEF @ KC or Miami DEF at home against the Jets? Niners D has kinda let me down so far, and Miami has impressed.
Also Jermichael Finley (GB) @ CHI or Visanthe Shiancoe (MIN) vs. the Lions. I feel like Shiancoe is going to be one of Favre’s primary targets and I honestly don’t know much about Finley
"All during film, I'm calling him Bam-Bam, like from 'The Flintstones,' because he hits everything. He is the truth" - Chad Ochocinco on Patrick Willis
You probably cannot lose on defense
Miami has run over the Jets but the Jets are also aware Miami has run over the Jets. I’d expect the Jets to trot out an extremely conservative game plan to limit any turnovers. The 49ers will get some sacks and turnovers, probably the safest bet.
You haven’t heard of Jermichael Finley!!! He’s the greatest the TE ever according to the NFL Network who surprisingly hasn’t played like the greatest TE ever … ever. I dunno, TE are always about predicting TDs. Shiancoe is probably going to produce passing yards but both stand about an equal chance of getting into the end zone.
I like Jermichael more right now
Once Favre gets into his groove (if he does), I’d take Visanthe. Like you said both defenses will probably be good options.
I think that the Niners defense probably has a slightly better chance at getting turnovers off Matt Cassel than the Miami one does off Sanchez.
Personally I’d try to trade one of them while they’re both hot.
Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority
thanks guys and good call I think I'm gonna look around and see what I can get for one of those defenses
I’ve heard all of the Finley hype, which is why I drafted him, but yeah so far he hasn’t exactly been the best TE ever. I figured with Favre probably having limited options maybe Shiancoe was due for a big game.

Injuries are killing me...
First Grant goes out for the season then Moreno ends up getting scratched…
Who should I start in my flex?
I am starting Ray Rice and Ahmad Bradshaw as my RBs for sure, and Miles Austin and Randy Moss as my WRs
Choose from the following and thanks in advance: Arian Foster, Santana Moss, Mike-Sims Walker, Malcom Floyd, Mark Clayton, Brandon Jackson.
I am leaning towards Foster.

I would choose Foster
He will get you some guaranteed points…unlike WR’s, especially in a non PPR league. If you are in a PPR, I might consider S.Moss over Foster..

Flex choices
I play in a league with a RB/WR flex and a WR/TE flex, where I have Cooley and Witten as TE choices, with Gates a must start in the usual TE slot (someone recently dropped Witten, and i got dibs on waivers) as well as Manningham and Aromashodu. Who would you recommend starting this week.
As for the RB/WR flex i also have Portis, LT and Forsett. Who would you go with there?
By the way, I know some people around here hate the Raiders, but...
Lois Murphy?
Ouch. That’s a good line for a Raider hater, but I hadn’t seen those colors out of you, Smileyman.

Last time I'm coming to you guys for advice
Carson Palmer—9 points

Advice...
Well, I stuck with Hillis against the Ravens and he blew up big time. Hopefully he grabs the starting job ahead of Harrison.
I started Buckhalter and it looks like Maroney is the guy they want starting while Moreno is out at this point. Buckhalter has 12 rushing yards 31 receiving yards. Breaston on my bench has 10.10 points. That’s life. The rest of my squad is looking sharp though so I can live with it.
Speaking of Denver
Orton’s over 400 yards passing.
And they just got flagged for a false start when everybody on the o-line but the center and two guards moved.
