49ers 2010 NFL Roster Cuts: Team reaches 53-man limit

The 49ers made their roster cuts and there's a good deal to discuss. There's a few things of specific note, but first let me go ahead and list the final cuts, with a thanks to Matt Barrows of the Sac Bee for being on top of everything today. You can follow him on Twitter @mattbarrows.

Cuts

QB Jarrett Brown
RB Michael Robinson
FB Brit Miller
FB Jehuu Caulcrick
TE Tony Curtis
TE Joe Jon Finley
WR Jason Hill
WR Bobby Guillory
WR Kevin Jurovich
OT Matt Kopa
OG Brian de la Puente
C Cody Wallace
DL Khalif Mitchell
DE Will Tukuafu
DT Derek Walker
LB Bruce Davis
LB Keaton Kristick
LB Matt Wilhelm
LB Mike Balogun
CB Karl Paymah
S Chris Maragos
K Shane Andrus

Surprising cuts to me would be LB Matt Wilhelm, RB Michael Robinson and CB Karl Paymah. Cutting Wilhelm leaves the team with three inside linebackers by my count, so surely they have their eye on the waiver wire. Robinson, we all know how I feel about that one, but I am thinking that special teams will be fine this year, just a bit skeptical at the moment. One has to wonder if it will always be this stop-gap now, because the studs on ST this year will surely be starters next year. Paymah, I didn't like, but I honestly resigned myself to thinking he'd be in.

Make the jump for the 53-man roster as it stands now.

Star-divide

Quarterbacks (3) Alex Smith, David Carr, Nate Davis
Running Backs (3) Frank Gore, Brian Westbrook, Anthony Dixon
Fullbacks (1) Moran Norris
Tight Ends (3) Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Nate Byham
Wide Receivers (5) Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn, Dominique Zeigler, Kyle Williams
Offensive Line (10) Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Eric Heitmann, Chilo Rachal, Anthony Davis, Barry Sims, David Baas, Tony Wragge, Adam Snyder, Alex Boone

Defensive Line (6) Isaac Sopoaga, Aubrayo Franklin, Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Ricky Jean Francois, Demetric Evans
Inside Linebackers (3) Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes, NaVorro Bowman
Outside Linebackers (5) Parys Haralson, Manny Lawson, Ahmad Brooks, Diyral Briggs, Travis LaBoy
Cornerbacks (6) Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer, Tarrell Brown, Will James, Phillip Adams, Tramaine Brock
Safeties (5) Dashon Goldson, Michael Lewis, Taylor Mays, Reggie Smith, Curtis Taylor

Specialists (3) Joe Nedney, Andy Lee, Brian Jennings

I imagine we'll see some more moves, I doubt the team sticks with three inside linebackers, so we'll see what happens on that front. One has to wonder who of this group is not safe. One thing we can probably count on is OL Tony Wragge being cut at some point around week three when Eric Heitmann is coming around. Could the team go with three inside until then? It will be interesting to find out.

I think we will be fine without MRob

I really liked him too but I believe that we will easily replace him next year.

It seems like a 50-50 split as to whether cutting Robinson was a mistake from all the threads this morning.

I know...

that we have almost 0% percent chance of Revis being on the niners this year. But would Nate Clements and a future first rounder be a good trade for both teams in your opinion?

Nate, and a 2nd and 4th or 3rd

For the disgruntled Revis. Nate, a 1st and 3rd for a non-disgruntled Revis with the Jets being constricted by cap in the coming years (potentially.)

I would prefer to pay our own players first

before we go out and sign Revis for 16m a year

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't

Revis would immediately be more important than Goldson, Franklin, Lawson, Smith, Lee, Spencer and even Vernon Davis.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I know Revis would be an improvement over any of those players

but I like to take care of “family” first. Besides the way I see it the only players I would extend is VD, Smith, Lawson, Spencer in that order.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Either way, the whole "family" mentality isn't a rule, so much as a guideline.

The cutting of Robinson shows that. He was a favorite to everyone in that locker room and the coaches loved him. If we could bring Revis in I’d be throwing cash at him.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

In my opinion

If you make someone love you they will work harder and longer for you. If you pay someone they will just work for the money. The only reason I would pay our players first is because you show that you will take care of your players and then they will take care of you.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I think these guys would understand though.

They know it’s a family and a business. I think Vernon would get paid regardless, and the other guys would understand.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

They would understand it

But I couldn’t do that to the players who put themselves into harms way.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

It's something you have to do to be successful, though.

Not saying like, you have to say screw all those guys, but money makes the league go round, and the first priority is winning.

53 players playing and practicing harder

Will improve the team more then the added benefit of bringing Revis in.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

That's an opinion, and one I don't agree with.

Revis pushes us over any other hump we have. That’s 100% playoffs guaranteed and a team to watch out for once we get there.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

In theory you could do both

If I can find that money post. I am sure that you could throw some money around to find a way to make everything work.

The one thing I hate about the NFL is the loyalty. I know this is a business but people can’t just screw people over.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

We'd have enough to spread around, in my opinion.

So it’s really not even an issue. Remember, we’re giving Clements an awful lot of bills.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I think there was a post on the money I'll throw some numbers together

and try to make it work perfectly. I don’t know much about contracts and stuff but how much do you think VD would get extended for.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

thats a matter of opinion.

Id rather extend our young players first. clements is more than capable you add goldson spencer and mays then we can do with out revis. yea revis has his little fancy island but clements do things that revis doesn’t

And yes, I said "I'd be..." so it was an opinion.

But this secondary is potentially out weakest position now. If you get top two in the league at the CB position, you drown him in cash.

my reply was to your Revis would instantly be more important than all those players comment

you take away clements price tag and he’s more than capable yea he’s been lacking in the INT department but he still creates plenty of turnovers most cbs don’t do that. he has his own patent move

That is an understatement

They also just released Jarvis Green who they gave a 4 year, $20 mil contract to this off-season. I don’t know how much was guaranteed, but it looks bad when they signed 3 or 4 veteran D-linemen and release one already. I know it’s an uncapped year, but you cannot waste money with bad signings like that.

As far as why they are shopping Smith, no idea. I guess he’s not as good as they had hoped and found a decent corner in the 5th round pick Perrish Cox.

Brooks came into the league with cincy as a MLB… is it possible they are eyeing him to back up there. We seems to have plenty of depth at OLB.

by Sigelvictory on Sep 3, 2010 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I already talked about this in this thread...
… I’m thinking Briggs or LaBoy kicks in on an emergency basis considering how strong Lawson and Brooks are looking to come on at their respective positions this year. Kind of like when you have a loose cord that only seems to connect when you have it angled a certain way, you just never touch it again. Or the rabbit ear antennas on TV back in the day. Once it works, leave it alone.

I think Brooks is done as an ILB, even in an emergency.

Yeah, I agree on the 3 surprise cuts

MRob is obviously the big news of the day, but Matt Wilhelm surprises me a lot. I really thought this team would carry 9 (or even 10) linebackers. Paymah indeed is a bit of a surprise, but not so much considering I thought he played rather poorly in the preseason.

Says a lot about Alex Boone that he made the team. My big question is Brock. Do they really need Brock (a 6th CB on a team that is also carrying 5 safeties)? Couldn’t that have gone to Wilhelm? Is Brock maybe a better ST player than Wilhelm or something?

It seems he was running on adrenalin last year when we brought him in. The feeling for Wilhelm is that if the team needs him, they can sign him off the street much like last year and until then, Bowman can step in nicely.

Phil Barber did a good job describing their differences the other day. Bowman is better in coverage but doesn’t have the same range or tackling ability of Willis. I think I’ve seen Bowman hit a guy in the backfield the last three preseason games and not bring him down.

by bignerd on Sep 3, 2010 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s a product of his speed and angle, he has too much force taking him north/south when he needs to turn east/west to bring a cutting guy down. It’s definitely not a strength issue, so he can be coached.

Thoughts on Robinson

Although a great player on special teams, he was almost useless as a running back…just sayin’. So rather than taking up a roster spot for someone with no upside on offense or defense, they add the younger linebackers, safties and corners to develop on special teams and bring them along in the game. Can see the long-term thinking about getting the maximum value from each player.

It’s a bitterweet day. As a player once said to me: “NFL, yeah, it means Not For Long.”

He cares about special teams..

He wouldn’t have made all those moves for returners if he didn’t. People may not agree, but players like Mrob on ST are a dime a dozen, someone, i.e. Mays, Taylor, Dixon, Bowman can fill those voids. With guys like Reggie, Brock, Brown, and Walker there too. Even Zeigler has proven to be valuable on ST’s. Players who want to be on the field and make an impact in whatever way they can will step up on STs.
The team showed to have lots of potential depth this year and he clearly had to make a decision that one dimensional guys just had no place. It’s a good problem to have in my opinion.

Wilhelm lost his roster spot last night

He had two terrible plays. He gave up that 32 yard run with the 1st team defense, essentially Tolbert ran right by him. Later on Bowman was about to blow up a screen play but Wilhelm couldn’t find the running back (he was in plain sight I might add) and the Chargers ended up with 20 yard gain off a broken play.

What about Brooks or Lawson?

Brooks used to be an ILB and Lawson’s skills better fit an ILB, so if we have depth at OLB, they could be back-up ILBs. Maybe that is what the coaches are thinking.

Doesn't mean they hit the QB though

Madden 11 still has the problem where no matter what kind of AWR the QB has, he still gets the ball out of his hands before getting hit.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see that at all.

I see them a lot more vulnerable this time around, actually. I mean, I see it to an extent, but it’s not nearly as bad as on Madden NFL 10. Also, I don’t know if you mean the awareness rating, but since you said “AWR,” I may as well clear it up that the AWR rating has nothing to do with that on there.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I did mean awareness

and that kind of goes towards another problem Madden has where they really do not have enough ratings. Is it even based on a rating right now on how well QBs make decisions or face the blitz? QBs should have some kind of rating on how they do against pressure. For instance, David Carr has a lot of problem when facing pressure, but other guys like Donovan McNabb handle it pretty well.

I do agree that it is not as bad as Madden 10, but it does still happen. I was facing Matt Cassel yesterday, and I did not even get a sack in the game. Quite perplexed by that one.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

The awareness rating itself does nothing in regards to the QB on Madden.

Just so you know. I agree with everything you just said, though. I do really like this version in comparison to 10, and especially 9. I just hate that so much dev time went to garbage like GameFlow and 30 bucks worth of Downloadable Content.

I didn’t pay for this game, by the way, nor did I pay for my online pass. I didn’t break any law, but I didn’t buy it because I think they don’t deserve my money until they actually work on developing a game as opposed to developing the next way to sell the brand.

I think the engine is vastly improved this year, and that was with minimal dev time. Think about what they could do if they actually devoted even 50% of time to working on the engine and animations.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I know!

Madden needs competition because this is getting ridiculous. They make minor improvements and then add little things to try to bring in new players. Lame. But I do agree that this is the best version to come out since 07. Kind of sad really. If the Madden team has the skill and devotion other games have like Street Fighter, I think that game would blow our minds.

I find it funny that you did not buy the game because I did not technically buy my copy either. My cousin bought a new PS3 (Making himself a SSF4 arcade) and Madden came with it. He hates Madden, so he gave it to me and I bought him some tacos. I call that a win-win.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

EA puts out some quality games, which angers me about Madden.

The NHL games are great. skate 1, 2 and 3, outside of some online issues are almost flawless games. But for Madden, it’s the brand, not the game that matters to them.

Tacos for Madden is an acceptable tradeoff.

Surprises

As many others, I’m not surprised by many of the cuts, besides M-Rob, but even then, not so much. There was no room for him in the backfield, and you can keep DBs to do special teams work.

For the practice squad, I’d like to see Brown, Caulcrick, and Davis, at least. Maybe even Maragos.

Surprised to me to make the team were Taylor and Boone, both of which I really like, but with the depth at their positions, I was wondering how they’d make the team. I like Taylor more than Lewis and Smith, tbh, so I’m glad he has a shot. Boone I like for future depth. I wonder if they kept him on in case they were worried about Staley’s health or Davis’ consistency, considering he’s still raw himself.

Most surprising roster "make"

Obviously Tramaine Brock from Bellhaven College (how many people can honestly say they have even heard of it and/or know where that is). But he’s more than likely an insurance policy. When James is fully healthy I’m pretty sure they let Brock go and either pick up a veteran ILB or sign whomever between Kristick or Balogun makes the PS. Wilhelm to me is not a surprising cut even though he did make a couple of decent plays last night. If all else fails and he is available, who knows. Like Tre said, someone goes to his garage and asks him to come back.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought plenty

Considering Goldson very well could become a top 5 safety this year… he may end up worth the investment. And just because he wants top 5 money doesn’t mean he’ll get it, but they may be able to work out a contract that works for both sides.

Touchdown Forty Niners!

by Effage on Sep 3, 2010 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Goldson is all about the money

I have a feeling that once he gets paid he won’t be good. As for a happy sides contract it won’t happen, look at Revis. I would prefer to spend the money on VD, and Alex Smith.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 11:43 PM PDT up reply actions

How are you so sure?

I might have a bit of concern about whether Goldston will be a team player or not, but I don’t think we’ll end up in a Revis situation. Nobody will be saying Goldston is the best safety in the game, so he won’t have nearly as much fuel. And yes, you have to prioritize VD and Smith (assuming he has a good year like I expect he will), but this team has done a good job with contracts in recent years. Also, I think they will prioritize Goldston high enough to get a contract done. I would also like to see them keep Lawson, but you’d think something will have to give at some point.

Somemone..manraj I think..

started talking about the draft for next year and they and Steven C were talking about who to draft. Adding my two cents to it. At this early time it looks like there might be some good CBs in the second so maybe go for DL or LB in the first and CB in the second. At third I"d like go for Christian Ballard (Adrian Clayborn’s teammate) to go in as a DE for us and possible heir to Smith. If we don’t seem to need to go CB in the first I’d like to see us go after DT Jerrell Powe or OLB Vonn Miller.

Anyway just floating out some ideas and such.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Sep 3, 2010 4:09 PM PDT reply actions

I don't think it is necessary to go for a DE early in the draft.

We are deep there if we draft for the defense I would take a CB, but depending on how Alex Smith plays I would like to pick a QB.

Yeah Soap Don't wash with me.

Not a big fan of him. In one thru 4 we’ll probably have a chance at the following DL: DT/NT Jerrell Powe i the first, a few DE’s availalbe in the 2nd like Allen Bailey and Jarvis Jenkins, DE Christian Ballard in the 3rd and DT/NT Kendrick Ellis in the 3rd. At CB we would probably have a chance in the second at the two texas dudes (Aaron Williams and Curtis Brown).Looking over things we might have a shallow chance at getting Ras-I Dowling (thinkng we pick at like 21-24) and that is iffy.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Sep 3, 2010 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Will depend..

how the guys look. I mean we have Soap on one end and Smith at the other. Smith is a wonder man but he is getting on up in years and I am not a big fan of Soap. We probably won’t do a deal with Franklin. It taking 3 yrs to really build up a DL guy, it would be nice to groom some guys.

The beauty with these guys is that you can draft a late round pick and have the younger guy pick up information from the older guy. Thus saving you a high draft pick and improving your team at the same time.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Smith is 30.

He has at least 3 years in him if not 5 or 6. So yeah, if we were to draft a replacement or project guy, next year’s draft makes a lot of sense.

However, I would not be so sure that Franklin is out the door. We could make him a 3 year deal like Casey Hampton got or a little longer since he’s younger than Hampton. Of course, I think the main problem has been that Franklin only excelled last season, so they want to see if he can do it again this season.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

RJF did awesome during the preseason

Hopefully he gets some snaps during the regular season so that we can see if he can excel in the regular season.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Depends on where you want him to take snaps

because I would like to see RJF at LDE this season. He would be an instant upgrade over Sopoaga and can provide a pass rush.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I want him at NT

I want to see if he can replace Franklin.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Why do you want to replace Franklin?

If Franklin proves that he can play at a high level again, then we could solidify the front 7 by making RJF the LDE. Franklin is better than Sopoaga, so I would try to find Sopoaga’s replacement first.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Money

We do not have infinte amount of money. If there is no drop off and RJF plays for cheaper. We could trade Franklin for a high draft pick (NT are very high priced) and still have a decent front.

by manraj7 on Sep 3, 2010 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

But eventually you would have to pay RJF then

eventually you will have to sign a NT for what they are worth. We cannot keep cycling in NTs just because we do not want to pay them. If Franklin proves that he can continue to play at a high level, then we are looking at a contract of about $7 mil a year for a top tier NT. That is well worth the money when you are talking about how how expensive other positions have become. We would not be a good defense without a good NT.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

That's why there's drafts and free agens

I get what you’re saying about resigning players but you can’t pay big money to everybody on your team who deserves it.

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

by smileyman on Sep 3, 2010 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

That is true

but 7 mil a season is not that bad for a top tier starter. As far as the draft goes, you do not want to keep cycling in new talent every 3-4 years especially when it takes an average of 3 years for D-linemen to develop. This is an honest question, but other than 34 year old Jamal Williams coming on a season spent on injury reserve, when was the last time a high level NT hit free agency? I am used to hearing that NTs just don’t hit free agency much like LTs.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Another reason why putitng RJF in

If you really want to resign Franklin you can use RJF as leverage against Franklin so that we can get a better deal.

49ers biggest needs for the future in general:

1. Franchise QB
2. DBs (CBs in particular) who can play tight man-to-man coverage, and are fast enough not to get beat deep.
3. LDE
4. RG
5. more pass rushers
6. certainly couldn’t hurt to upgrade over Josh Morgan at #2 WR (although i don’t think it’s urgent)
7. Kory Sheets (since he was our future)

Ok kinda coming in late and not gonna go thru 700 posts to catch up LOL

So in looking at the cuts I’m hoping to see these guys on PS:
K. Mitchell, Will Tukafu, Bobby Guillory (maybe), Britt Miller

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Sep 3, 2010 4:13 PM PDT reply actions

Nothing too surprising

It is a bit surprising to see the team carry just 6 DL, but like Ninjames pointed out in a few posts, the team probably has its eye on the waiver wire. I’m thinking for an additional DL instead of ILB though. The team should be fine with just 3 ILBs since Wilhelm will likely be available if the team needs him.

The special teams unit appears to have taken quite a hit, but I think the other guys will fill in more than adequately. Also, the team’s practise squad should turn out to be fairly stacked (in terms of practise squads being stacked). Can’t say I’m sad about any of these cuts, but I will miss M-Rob. Here’s hoping he retires from playing football and becomes a special teams coach with the 49ers one day.

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 3, 2010 4:14 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah I talked a bit more about ILB after I made this post.

As in, I don’t see them going for one now. If they need one, they’ll sign one off the street.

But I’m not sure we get another DL, and that’s because Diyral Briggs and Travis LaBoy will give way to Ahmad Brooks when he’s healthy, and the two of them played very well at DE this preseason. Briggs looked good at 3-4 DE and Nickel DE, and I only remember seeing LaBoy at Nickel DE.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

Scotty McK is a possibility but not this year.

the dude fumbles in the 1st preseason game.....

which happens to be one of the sloppier of the games being that it is the first, and suddenly he has Adrian Peterson fumblitis?

by sanfranfanmdk on Sep 3, 2010 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Small sample size warning...

But M.Rob has 86 NFL carries and 2 fumbles, good for 1 out of 43 carries (receptions excluded, regular season). Peterson (receptions excluded, regular season) had 1 out of 44 last season, and averages 1 per 45.75 (same caveats) for his career. Lets not get crazy about M.Rob’s ball control ability.

by Deelron on Sep 3, 2010 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

He has had 2 fumbles (only 1 lost)

out of 4 years…plus throw in 43 receptions…and you can’t just leave out games where Peterson had a boat load of fumbles to try and further your point (i.e. playoff games)….i really wouldn’t say he fumbles all the time like people are trying to make it seem

by sanfranfanmdk on Sep 3, 2010 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

There's no way to compare playoff games

Because there’s not a team in the league that’d be giving M.Rob carries in a playoff situation.
To be honest the whole leaving out receptions was to make it more reasonable, given that Peterson has had nearly twice as many receptions (83 to 43), and has had a similar fumble rate.

The whole point is that if you consider Peterson having fumble problems, then Robinson has had a similar fumble rate (from what we’ve seen), hence the whole “lets not get crazy about M.Robinson’s ball control ability.” There’s little to no evidence that he possesses even an average skill in holding onto the ball.

by Deelron on Sep 3, 2010 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Well the Peterson comparison was more of a joke

because of the NFC championship game, and i will take any chance i can to take shots at the Viqueens, but you have to factor in all of Robinsons touches for the simple fact that he isn’t a featured part of the offense like a Peterson, and you throw in the returns and Robinson only fumbles 1.25% of the time he touches the ball, so I wouldn’t say he has a propensity for fumbling

by sanfranfanmdk on Sep 3, 2010 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

that wasn't his only fumble

hes had about 1 a year, with 18-26 carries per year. those arent beautiful stats

by pwarren85 on Sep 3, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Offense scores points, and Defense wins championships but let's not forget...

that ST helps both those teams get in a good position to accomplish those goals.

meh, special teams

is not all about individual players and “intangibles”. besides returners and kickers, any 2nd and 3rd stringers could do the job fine.

special teams is more about coaching and working together as a unit than individual players, making sure everyone is in the right place at the right time.

the scrubs(non-starters) are always on special teams on every single football team from pop warner to the pros.

if you can’t offer anything else while there are other players with more upside and brighter futures then you’re going to lose the job.

in this tough economy, you gotta diversify your skillset, lol

M Rob

I’m very sad to loose him and I think he got the shaft for a few reasons.

1) Guys like him, work ethic ect., are supposed to stick around (see Ulbrick).
2) He was NEVER used in ANY offensive trick plays, despite the fact that he was QB for the #2 ranked team in the nation.
3) He was always VERY VERY conservative when running. Now I know everyone is gonna say he was just a bad runner, but I feel as if he ran conservatively on purpose – maybe even more so because of Sing. When he ran as a QB in college he wasn’t
  a) hunched over obsessively holding the ball with 2 hands
  b) trying way too hard to follow his lead blocks.
If he had just played straight football like he did in other areas of his game I think he would have been much better.

Adams is a good PR

Yes, he fumbled the ball but even then he is a vast improvement over last year PR. Adams knows when to catch the ball, when to call a fair catch, and how to catch the ball. It also helps that he can actually return the ball to a decent amount giving our offense a decent field position. Something we did not have last season. Smith does have some talent, but like these3words mentioned, why are the Broncos trying to trade him? Is it just because they have the depth and no need for Smith? However, that has got to make Broncos’ fans a bit upset to see that they spent a first round pick to trade back into the draft to grab this guy and said that they thought he was worth a first round pick. Now, how are they going to justify using a first on this guy when they are ready to get rid of him the next year?

It looks like they kept Will James...surprising since he is injured and didn't do anything.

Maybe he needs to be healty for them to cut him so they don’t have to do an injury settlement. That is why they have 11 DB’s. Maybe in a few weeks, James is cut.

I also said they would keep an extra OL (Boone) because of the injury…..look for Wragge to get cut when Heitmann returns.

It won't be Snyder.

Wragge will leave. Snyder is a good guard, and always has been. He’ll be an even better center if he practices more at it, too.

Just finished watching niners v. Raiders. If we need to get down to 52 Byham is a good candidate. Multiple drops in that game. Multiple drops v. Chargers. We had 2 T.E’s last year with no problems. If we need blocking, use an extra tackle.

by wtlichens on Sep 3, 2010 7:09 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Multiple drops?

He was hit hard several times forcing most of those drops, and he’s not even a pass-catching tight end. I think we can all say he has FAR exceeded our expectations this offseason/preseason in regards to his blocking and pass catching. I didn’t like the pick, but I’m glad he’s on.

Don’t forget his versatility

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I liked him in the fullback role. But odd as it sounds, I’d rather have Walker do that unless we have him catching on that play. Walker isn’t a very good blocker off the line, but every time he motions to that h-back, fullback role he makes crushing blocks. I suppose this means that when he has time to get moving, he blocks very well.

Battering ram huh?

I like Byham a lot he can play H-Back, TE, Fullback can catch ok

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Sep 3, 2010 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

We need to start getting more versatile.

Davis, Walker at the LOS. Gore in backfield with Byham at FB. It says “RUN!” all day, but is Byham can get some explosion and get out there to catch fast enough, and Davis potentially stays in to block and maybe tries to get open in the second half of the play, with Walker going deep and Gore staying in to block a blitz… that play could be dangerous.

watch again. Wide open. Simple drops. Ask Nate Davis v. Chargers. One of his int’s went right through his bricks.

by wtlichens on Sep 3, 2010 7:30 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

And I counter that with several very good catches.

And also the fact that, you know, he’s not a pass-catching tight end but a very versatile blocker who can play an h-back role and probably even run the ball a little bit. His catching skills are far beyond what anyone projected.

Are you suggesting that Tramaine Brock or Curtis Taylor provide more than Byham at this point in time?

by James Brady on Sep 3, 2010 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Brock YES. On a team that has produced underachieving cb’s like langham, drakeford, Strickland, and even Clements,I want to see a corner with attitude. I see that in Adams and Brock. Byham IMAO needs to learn to get rid of his stone hands or become “bear pascoe” IN MY HUMBLE OPINION.

by wtlichens on Sep 3, 2010 7:52 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

You think Brock has shown more than Byham? You think Brock will even be active? You think that if he is active, he’ll ever see the field? Hmm…

Beyond that, Byham could have stone hands all darn day and I’d be OK with it, considering he’s NOT A PASS CATCHER. Just saying, bro, that’s like judging Moran Norris harshly because he’s a poor runner (when really you should be judging him that he’s not very good lead blocking anymore). Byham has shown decent hands throughout three of the four games. You’re going off of one game here. I just don’t get this at all.

Davis is a very gooD blocker who CAN catch. Why use a valuable spot on a T.E. Who might surprise us if he makes a catch? We did o.k. With 2 T.E’s last year.

by wtlichens on Sep 3, 2010 8:08 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

You say that

yet you are not saying Tedd Ginn should be cut. It’s questionable if Ginn will catch the ball when thrown his direction and HE is a WR. But he adds something that we don’t have a lot of and that’s speed at the WR position. Byham offers a blocking TE who can also catch so it is not an automatic that when he’s on the field that we are running the ball. He adds another element to the offense.

By the way, Brock has not played against #1 offenses yet so he is way unproven. He will probably make the PS, but that is less likely for someone like Byham.

by ZeroOneInfinity on Sep 3, 2010 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions

It's clear that the team wants a blocking tight end.

A lot of teams carry a blocking tight end. The 49ers generally do. Last year wasn’t the rule, it was the exception.

and it was two games that he had at least three passes whiz through his mitts each game. Which. I would be ok with if I thought they would ever pass to him. But in recent history the niners have given the ball to Adam walker, Michael Robinson, Moran Norris, Fred Beasley when the game was on the line djust because they were on the roster. It has been a tough last ten years.Sorry.

by wtlichens on Sep 3, 2010 8:19 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

No. This isn’t true. There isn’t two games where he had at least three passes “whiz through his mits.”

You just described five passes when your statement implied six. I’ll re-watch the Raiders game tonight, but I recall him getting hit really hard in the second quarter and dropping a pass, if that’s one you’re implying, then yeah, I don’t even know.

Totally uncalled for

and for a blocking TE who barely caught any balls in college Byham did pretty good.

by smileyman on Sep 3, 2010 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

After the misses, Byham caught the 2 pt conversion in the Raiders game to give us a 4 point lead. It would have been a 2 point lead had he dropped it, leaving the Raiders a chance to win with just a FG. I look at that as a pre-season version of a clutch situation since nobody goes for a tie.

Byham’s going to be good once his jitters calm down.

Yeah. And Crabs has this great reputation for catching the ball (he does use his hands very well), but he was among the league leaders in drops and he even missed several games.

Honestly, I think Smith’s 60% completions last year was pretty impressive considering all the drops (and several ints that bounced off the receiver’s hands). You don’t see those kinds of things on championship teams. You have to value the ball like it’s your own child, and that’s one of my concerns about this football team. Will they catch that third down throw? Are they going to stop giving away free interceptions? This team needs to clean that up if they want to be true contenders.

Rate stats please.

VD had a 60% catch rate (Football Outsiders), which while not great wasn’t absolutely terrible. Rate stats are the way to go, you can only rack up a ton of a bad counting stat if you’re actually good enough to stay on the field in the first place.

by Deelron on Sep 4, 2010 12:25 AM PDT up reply actions

A lot of Intriguing Things Happened Here

The Niners kept Will James (which I like) even though he will be out a few weeks. Karl Paymah just wasn’t good enough to be on a team looking to win their division, it was that simple with him. I am wondering if Brock is. Just a stop gap until we see what’s on the waiver wire. I absolutely don’t understand the release of Matt Wilhelm, this only leaves us with 3 ILBs with the back up a rookie 3rd round pick, allbeit talented. As I mentioned before the Robinson release pleased me, simply because he was too one dimensional (ST), and doesn’t even return puntss. However, we HAD to keep either him or Jehuu and we didn’t. I like that Alex Boone, Dyrell Briggs, Nate Byham, and Curtid Taylor remained on the roster; that said keeping 5 safeties is questionable because Smith and Mays can easily take over for the injured starters if need be

I honestly think the 49ers have some things up there sleeves in the coming days either in free agency, waiver wire, or trade. We will NOT start the season with 3 ILBs and Brock one injury away from being our nickel corner

Regarding the three ILBs

It’s very possible we only keep three. Remember, they signed Wilhelm off the street last year. Bowman can play when someone is hurt or tired and if they need one they can bring someone in. It’s not so crazy.
