College Football Gameday Thread

The purpose of these college football threads and articles are to help those who don't know a ton about the sport to stay informed throughout the year up until draft time. There are several people on this site, and others from other SBNation sites, that love to talk about college football. If you consider youself not interested, or not understanding why it's being discussed on a Niners related website then there are plenty of other great articles and fanposts on the site to focus on relative to the 49ers.

There has already been some really intriguing games and matchups. College Football kicked off this past Thursday and will continue on in to Monday. So there is still plenty of action left this week with a majority of it happening this morning and continuing on in to the evening.

I am going to start the body of the article with a few important recaps and then get in to the rest of the remaining schedule discussing a few of the more important matchups.

If you didn't get a chance to see it, here is the College Football Top 25 Preview Article I posted on Wednesday before things hit full-swing. Feel free to post comments about what games mean the most to you and of course just general comments about any game that is on throughout the course of the day.

Star-divide

Recapping Thursday and Friday's games:

The most interesting game from Thursday was probably the upset of the #15 Ranked Pittsburgh Panthers by the hands of the Utah Utes 24-27. Dion Lewis was held in check to a career low 75 yards and the rest of the team struggled behind the rookie leadership of Tony Sunseri. The good news for the Panthers is that it can only go up from there.

All of the higher ranked teams dominated as they were supposed to but one other game that seemed at times like it was going to materialize in to a very good one was the USC at Hawaii Game. Greg Salas played like one of the top receivers in the Nation but the rest of the Warriors just fully couldn't string it together enough to keep up with the offensive fire-power of Matt Barkley, Ronald Johnson and the rest of the Trojans. None the less, it was a decent game to watch up until mid-way through the 4th Quarter. The Trojans defense will need to tighten up dramatically once they start playing some of the top-tier teams this year.

Previewing the rest of the weekend:

There aren't a bunch of great matchups today but the most notable and significant will more than likely be the matchup of #21 LSU vs. #18 North Carolina. The Tarheels will be without thirteen players and will have their work cut out against an always solid LSU Tiger Team. Aside from that, #6 Ranked TCU will be tested tonight going up against the #24 Ranked Oregon State Beavers led by Jacquizz Rodgers and company. Since there is no Monday Night Football this week, the first week of college football wraps up with quite possibly the game of the week. This is the highest that The Boise State Broncos have ever been ranked at #3. They will have their work cut out against a very stong and potentially dangerous #10 Ranked Virginia Tech Hoakies. Both teams have some phenomenal talent and it will be very interesting to say the least. The game should have plenty of fireworks and excitement and is a very good replacement for the lack of a MNF Game this week.

Well

Looks like I don’t need Yahoo! Sports anymore for my college gameday scores, I love the set up you have here.

Also, just wanted to say Spartie On Michigan State and Raid the Big 12 Texas Tech. I’m feeling an 8-4 season out of both teams, and another rematch in a Bowl Game. I’d be Ok if the Spartans took the rematch, but I bleed Red, so it’s hard not to root for the Red Raiders. It will be interesting to see the team play some defense this season with Mike “Wood Shed” Leach out of the picture.

And high flying offense of Tommy Tuberville?

Oh Yeah, give some more vanilla please…

As far as coach Singletary and the 49ers – Singletary, that dude is legit. He’s legit on all levels. He’s doing what he feels is right.

I won’t knock his vanilla offense until game 4 or 5 of the season. Let’s face it though, any offense compared to Mike Leach’s is going to look vanilla.

I think the Spartans will have a decent year...potentially making the top 25.

They seem to be having a bit of trouble with W. Michigan this morning though. I’m sure they’ll win though.

"I'm blessed..... Thanks, God bless" ...hey, it worked for Tim Tebow.

I hope they can crack the top 25, but it will be hard to do in the Big 10 (not that it isn’t difficult in other conferences). The Spartans always seem to have a handful of letdown games during the season. I hope you’re right though.

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 4, 2010 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

Wisconsin and Ohio State are the only real power houses in the Big 10. Penn St. and MInnesota should be decent also. But Mich St. has a shot.

Anyway…. it’s the first week. A lot of the teams aren’t playing at their peaks.

Well, the Spartans bounced back from an relatively ugly first quarter. I’m looking forward to UConn upsetting the Boys in Maize and Blue. I then look forward to listening to the Rich Rodriguez head hunt begin on Detroit Sports Radio (although it’s been going on for at least a year already).

In all honesty, I think the Wolverines can beat the Huskies, but I’m pulling hard for the Huskies. Down with Rich Rod! You don’t bring a 3-3-5 Defense to the Big Ten! Spartie On!!!

Ingram will most likely be back in to the fold. It will be hard to contain both Ingram and Jones. Saban will prob come after the freshman pretty hard.

What is wrong with the D?

They put up 7 of the 21 that are on the board right now (almost 14 on Black’s INT return)… the secondary is good. Marsh a good player on the D-line… the linebackers are so-so but Jelani Jenkins and Brandon Harris have good potential to be above average players

You said—i can’t agree with you there. Their great. they just scored another TD.

I came back and said “I said their defense is great”

you come back with another comment trying to convince me that they’re great.

I agree! I. Didn’t. Say. They. Weren’t. Great. Their Defense is what’s kept them in this game, because the offense sure isn’t doing it.

Not unless your name is Al Davis

No kicker is worth a 1st IMO. There are only 32 NFL teams and over 1000 College teams that all have kickers. If our scouts are any good, they can find a kciker for zero draft picks. Look for good undrafted guys is the way to go. Out of all of them though… maybe a 4th or 5th on Forbath.

I just think there are sooooo many and

don’t feel it’s necessary. There are a lot of awesome kickers who have gone undrafted. Andrus could amount to something if they keep him around on the PS

No its not

but definitely not anything higher. Unless the guy can hit from 70 yards 9/10…then not worth muc higher. Like I said….there are SO many, and not enough teams to give them jobs.

by Drew Kerr on Sep 4, 2010 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I know you guys are talking about kickers, but spending a draft pick on a punter can sometimes work out too. In fact, the best draft pick of the 49ers in the past decade was Andy Lee in round 6! (Ok, Patrick Willis at 11 overall may have been better, or Taylor Mays in round 2 could prove to be better, but you guys get the point)

You want to talk about franchise players coming out of round 6, look no further than Andy [site decorum] Lee.

OPEN QUESTION:

does anyone know if Patrick Peterson (LSU CB) is likely to return kicks in the NFL, or would they not let him to avoid injury?

i can’t imagine a team would feel comfortable with their best CB out there returning kicks, but the dude has talent. he had 244 return yards with a TD today, and that was just in the first half.
