Would you rather had Matt Leinart over Troy Smith?
The question is if Matt Leinart , had came out in 2005, would the 49ers had choosen Matt Lienart over Alex Smith for our no#1 pick. my question is if the 49ers lose their first play off game , is that enough to keep Alex Smith as your starting QB into 2011 , are do we get another QB, and where do we get this QB, through the draft, knowing that the Bills, Browns and Cardinals will be picking before us, whom very well pick a QB, I think that i would rather had Matt Leinart in 2011 camp. then Troy Smith are some unproven rookie, Now the 49ers still have a chance to get Matt Leinart after the end of the season, it would have been nice to have picked up Matt Lienart , to replace Nate Davis

I'm sorry but
This is incredibly hard to read… As in, I had to read most sentences 2 times to understand what you were trying to say.

So you are saying that the Packers should have cut Rodgers after his first playoff game loss?
Or the Cowboys should have cut Romo after he lost his first 2 playoff games? I think the key to looking at Alex Smith is how he performs during the regular season. If he sucks or is barely average, but happen to get into the playoffs because of the easy schedule or because of the amazing defense, then maybe…but he performs above average and still loses his first playoff game, they should still give him another chance.

are you comparing Alex Smith to Aaron Rodgers are Tony Romo, all of the elite QB have lost a playoff game, my point is Alex is a unproven QB still, that has just recently won the starting job as the 49ers QB, and my question is, will that be enough for the 49ers to bring Alex back for 2011, someone who hasn’t had a lot of success in the NFL, remember you have Smith, Davis,Lawson ,Goldsen in the last year of their contracts
And Leinart is a proven QB?????
Are you high pal? Leinart is terrible, and that won’t change. Even if he was brought in this year, Alex would still be better than him in camp next year and would be starting in 2011 over Leinart. And yes, Troy Smith is a better option as a backup than diva Leinart who thinks he’s entitled to a starting job.
Alex has been tortured with this franchise and stripped of the starting position, only to accept a paycut and return to compete for the position, not have it handed to him. But you want a guy who sulks and sobs because he isn’t handed a job?
Your point was....
“if the 49ers lose their first play off game , is that enough to keep Alex Smith as your starting QB into 2011”….And MY point is that if he is good enough to get them into the playoffs, but they happen to lose the first game, is that really a reason to replace him? Because you look at those two “elite” QB’s, their combined playoff records are 1-4, and yet they still have jobs lol

no thanks. 100% no thanks
Matt Leinart can go whine somewhere other than the bay area.

HELL NO! Troy Smith is a solid pick up and has at least as much talent as Leinart, the real difference is that Smith gets it and Leinart doesn’t. It takes real dedication and study to be a good NFL QB’. The old adage that their is no “I” in team applies in the case of Leinart. He came into this league as a premadonna and had his butt kissed at every turn at USC and believed his own hype, It has always been about him. He found out the hard way that just being a pretty boy from southern California doesn’t cut it in the the NFL!

I'd also rather have Troy Smith...
But that wasn’t always the case. Reason #462 why I’m not an NFL scout, I remember being bummed, really bummed when Leinart chose to return to USC instead of being the #1 overall pick for us 5 years ago. As a CAL fan, I was sick of seeing him in college and wanted to see him in the Bay. Also as a CAL fan, once Leinart went back to school I wanted us to draft Aaron Ro….nevermind. Go Alex, and go Niners.
Shit happens when you party naked
100% Troy Smith
Leinart is done. Troy Smith has much more upside than Leinart.
If Alex Smith loses his first playoff game, he will have lost his first playoff game. Simple as that. He would still have a job and it’s a TEAM loss, not a QB loss, unless he really screws everything up himself. If he helps the 49ers get to the playoffs, there is no reason for him to be replaced. I expect the 49ers to take a QB in the 2011 draft but I don’t anticipate one in the first round unless A. Smith is horrible this year.

rather have troy smith
leinart has to be willing to learn how to play, which he isn’t. He was overconfident coming out of college and that’s why both troy smith and alex smith are better QBs.
As I recall before Leinart got drafted he said that he knew more about the game than any other QB coming out in the 2006 draft, tell me now if he knows more about the game than vince young
instead of this can we have a discussion on who was a better QB Jamarcus Russell or Matt Leinart?

9thevolution again your missing the point
Some of you guys act like a bunch of girls it’s just a question, and i wanted to hear your honest opinion, it’s just a game, a game that we grew up playing as children, and you’re taking someone’s opinion personal, eveybody have a right to voice their opinion, whether you like it are not, now i was express my opinion about Matt Leinart over Troy Smith , and who would be a better QB to compete for the starting job in 2011against Alex smith, and i didn’t mention anything about cutting Alex Smith, what i said was would making the playoff, and losing the first game would be enough for the 49ers to keep Alex, are would the 49ers want to go in different direction, and what would be their best option a unproven rookie are Matt Lienart , And 9thevolution , i have said this before , i like Alex Smith, i’m just not in love with the guy
I don’t think anyone is taking any of this personally. Most of us here are very passionate about our team and it will show from time to time. I can assure you that everyone here is giving their honest opinion, just as you are giving yours. Try not to take it to heart if people here strongly disagree with your opinion. We can all come to the point to agree to disagree.
There really wouldn’t be a need to go in a different direction at QB if Smith loses his first playoff game. If Smith can lead this team to the playoffs, the 49ers will likely resign him to another contract. Smith has something to prove and that is why he took the pay cut to stay with the Niners. He wants to be here. I don’t see any QB’s on the current roster that really could compete with Alex Smith for the job next year unless he really stinks up the place this season. If that happens, the Niners will be shopping for a QB early in the draft.
I agree with you that Leinart hasn’t gotten the chance he deserves in Arizona. Hopefully for him, he will find it with another team. I do also feel he has a bit of a complex and he will need to grow up and realize he needs to work to get somewhere. It’s not going to be handed to him on a silver platter.

9thevolution i would like to apologize to you sir, when it comes to Mr.Smith your very emotional
can we agree if your QB plays well and don’t turn the ball over , when your QB can make plays on 3rd down and keep the drive alive, and keep the defense off the field, you have a greater chance of winning the game period, everything is on the QB and the coaches, win or lose, even though one play can’t determan a lose yes they do lose as a team, you have to remember the NFC championship game and the superbowl ,i can remember 2 interceptions that was key to the other teams victory. And i’m sorry , i believe that Matt Lienart deserves to have just as much time, as the 49ers did for Alex , All Matt wants to do is compete, have you forgotten that U.S.C produces more NFL ready QB , the any other colleges. listen i was born in San Francisco in 1954, yes thats right i’m 55yrs of age , So you can’t find a better fan, and i grew up with what is best for the team , and not some of those emotional ties that you guys share with some players. so all i’m saying is don’t take it so serious, let’s not take a open opinion, and make it nasty, it’s all in fun ,what can you possible get out of insulting another 49er fan.
Simply put, I don't like Leinart
I don’t feel it would be in our best interest to sign him for any purpose, be it backup or competing for the starting role. I don’t knock Leinart for losing his job to Warner, the guy’s a future HoF QB, I knock him for not putting in the effort to become the starting QB. He rode the bench until Warner walked away, and still he couldn’t grab the job from a guy who is all but washed up.
As for Alex Smith, I feel sorry for the guy, I really always have. I hope that he can succeed the way we all want him to, because he has always been placed in a position to fail. It’s a shame that he’s on his last chance now that he has a team built around him. So, I guess I have a soft spot for the guy.
That said, I still think we need another QB to groom for the future. And that guy isn’t Troy Smith or Nate Davis or Jarrett Brown. I’ll say, regardless of what Smith’s season looks like, it’s time Sing found his QB. Every HC has one, a drafted QB that gets tied to you for your career. With 4-5 potential 1st round QBs next year, I think it’s about time.
I digress though, to answer simply, Troy Smith is a better option for our team right now. Leinart will be out of football before you know it unless his attitude changes. Meanwhile, a guy who has faced criticism his entire career and took a pay cut just for an opportunity to prove he can still do the job, is in the best position he has been in 5 years.
Did you mean
Would you rather have Matt Leinart or Troy Smith.
Or did you mean to say Would you rather of had Matt Leinart or Troy Smith.
I read one sentence and stopped reading. Well you can’t really call it a sentence because a sentence is supposed to make sense.
Too bad
it should have been “Would you rather HAVE had Matt Leinart or Troy Smith”

the qbs
First of , I say no to matt leinert, we just cut nate davis for his apparent questionable work habits. Why would you want to bring in leinert since Arizona just cut him for the same apparent reasons, that wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to me? The more I’ve thought about it I don’t think the niners should even consider nate davis anymore at all. I liked davis and was rooting for him but I don’t think we want a Qb with a learning disability, and questionable work habits. I agree with what some have already stated if we were to rely on davis and were to go to a new offensive coordinator again davis would take too long to learn a new playbook again. Chances of another coordinator are a good possiblity too since jimmy reye has only 1 more year after this year left on his contract and is under some pressure to produce and therefore he too could be gone next year?

I like Troy Smith better than Leinart
If Alex does end up failing and the team does have to get a QB (there should be plenty of good ones in this year’s draft) then I’d rather have Troy Smith as the starter for 2011 (while the rookie learns) instead of Leinart.
