Golden Nuggets: Can't wait

Good morning, folks. We had a pretty slow day yesterday as far as news is concerned. This is probably a good thing considering all that has happened with this team (and division) this offseason. I think we can all finally look forward to the game on Sunday. The Seahawks. I'm seriously getting goosebumps for this regular season to begin. I'm ignoring friends who want to hang out on Sunday, I'm shutting out the entirety of the world outside of the 49ers. It will be a great game. Beyond that, Nate Davis' future will become clear around 1 p.m. pacific time today, so I imagine we'll have plenty on that here on Niners Nation throughout the day. And yeah, that about covers it. Enjoy your links. Also, check out this fanpost over at Field Gulls, and be sure to participate. Even if they say anything that may offend you, which they shouldn't, let's not rise to it. This is for good discussion only, not a trash talking thread.

First Look: Seattle Seahawks. I really do feel good about this game. (49ers.com)

Will Nate Davis be claimed? I guess he probably will be, but I'm not going to think about it anymore, honestly. (SFGate.com)

The division is up for grabs, and here's some storylines for all the teams involved. (Yahoo.com)

Star-divide

Steve Young isn't one of the five best quarterbacks in the league history, maybe. But surely he's higher on the list of overall top football players than where they placed him, no? (MercuryNews.com)

Lam has a good article about the struggles of Nate Davis, with some notes about the rookie offensive linemen as well. (Examiner.com)

Coach Singletary is of the opinion that the 49ers have three starting capable quarterbacks. I'm not so sure, myself. (CSNBayArea.com)

He would like to sign Nate Davis to the practice squad, but Singletary says the move is worth the risk. (SacBee.com)

The Eye on the Midwest blog continues over at the official website. (49ers.com)

I had a quick post on the Bay Area site about Singletary's look making it on a SI list. (SB Nation Bay Area)

Yesterday On Niners Nation

Golden Nuggets: Good news, bad news ... I love news (Ninjames)
Are the 49ers better off with Troy Smith in place of Nate Davis? (Ninjames)
NFC West Preview: The St. Louis Rams (Smileyman)
Ahmad Brooks's return and a transcript from Coach Singletary (Ninjames)

Today On Niners Nation(All times pacific and subject to change)

7:00 a.m. Mike Singletary Approval Rating, 2010 Preseason (Fooch)

10:00 a.m. NFC West: Seattle Seahawks (Smileyman)

We'll also have a prospector's guide and a post from Florida Danny, as well as myself, but the timing is not yet set.

Nate Davis is another teams issue.

Gimme 1 round!

Onto real news.

Sounds like Kyle William’s toe sprain is gonna keep him out of week 1. He’s the type of player, (shifty and very agile), who would be most limited by that injury.

I’d rather have Sing taking the cautious route than rushing him back and making it worse. Being a d*** to your players, (about injuries or otherwise), only takes you down the Mike Nolan road where teams won’t keep you even though you’re fantastic at your job.

I might even play Zeigler for sheissens und giggles. 3 catches 50 yards and 1 TD a realistic possibility?? Does anybody think Zeigler might come in for Ginn on the goal line for his ability to make jump ball catches?

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Sep 8, 2010 3:27 AM PDT reply actions

yes, and yes

Zeigler is going to be a factor this year. I’d say he’ll get between 1-3 looks per game on average. He’ll be a third down guy some and I really hope he’s in the red-zone package.

For some reason

I have a lot of confidence in Zeigler this year. As a slot receiver, he seems to have no fear of being slammed in the middle of the field. He’s also worked hard to make it out of the practice squad and he’s improving in different aspects of the game (i.e. positioning and route running).

by MondayMorningMontana on Sep 8, 2010 5:24 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m not sure he’ll be on the active roster for most games, let alone 1-3 targets every game. Here’s hoping he can contribute, but I just don’t see him being on the active roster each and every week.

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 8, 2010 8:33 AM PDT up reply actions

well, at first he will

with Williams out…IDK, seems like it’d be a waste to have him undressed with as much as he’s shown

I think he’ll still get a fair amount of playing time while Williams is on the shelf, but I don’t see the team dressing 5 WRs a lot during the regular season since Walker sees so much playing time. Since the team does only have 5 WRs, they could dress them all every week (when Williams returns), but I just don’t see it happening. I could be wrong.

wondering, along those lines

think Dixon will be inactive? Why dress 3 TB’s?

I'm gonna go

Troy Smith, Anthony Dixon, Snyder, Boone, Brock as inactives.

I don’t think Troy Smith counts towards the inactives since he is the 3rd QB and if he enters the game the other QBs cannot return (unless they were injured).

Yes, he does. He’s the “gimmie” inactive.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

my mistake, thanks for clearing it up kind sir.

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 8, 2010 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Tramaine Brock, Curtis Taylor, Alex Boone, Nate Byham. I’m not sure about Snyder, he can play pretty much all the OL positions in a pinch, and ain’t too bad at guard. I think Briggs might be on the inactive list when Brooks returns in Week 2. Dixon I can see being inactive also, but it’s hard to say for sure. Predicting the inactives on this year’s roster seems to be particularly harder than in the past. There appears to be much more talent.

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 8, 2010 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah, I agree

Brock, Taylor, Boone…I gotta think Dixon too unless he’s going to play a lot of special teams…Snyder is versatile but you already have G/C Wragge dressing and Sims is your tackle. Byham I can’t believe they’d keep him on the 53 if he’s not going to suit up. Why suit up your two receiving TE’s yet keep a blocking TE on the roster “just because”?

by Tre9er on Sep 8, 2010 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

well like I said, I’m not sure who the inactives will be, but there has to be some. Byham could be an inactive simply because the team can always just bring in an extra OT and line him up as TE in heavy sets. Byham probably still has a ways to go in terms of development before he’s a guy that dresses regularly. He likely wouldn’t have made it to the PS if he were waived, and the team likes him enough to know he could be ready to contribute sooner rather than later.

But again, we really won’t have a good idea (I should say I won’t) on who the inactives will be until we start seeing who is inactive on a regular basis.

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 8, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

also, I think once Hetimann returns, Wragge becomes the inactive player.

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 8, 2010 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Wragge will then become inactive

from the team, period.

ok, so

brock, taylor, boone, snyder, smith (troy)

pretty sure 3rd QB counts towards inactives but they actually get to dress and are considered the emergency QB

Yup they all sound good.

BdANd yes the 3rd qb counts as inactive thus Nate Davis is PS elligible.

by manraj7 on Sep 8, 2010 10:06 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

My best guess for inactives for the Seattle game on Sunday ...

Since we can only have 45 active players, 8 must be inactive, including the third-string QB. Here are my guesses:

QB (1): Troy Smith
Injured (4): Ahmad Brooks, Eric Heitmann, Will James, Kyle Williams
Other (3): Alex Boone, Tramaine Brock, Brian Westbrook

All of these picks are obvious except for Westbrook; my thinking is that we won’t need his playmaker style for Seattle so let him continue to rest his hamstring; alternatively, if things go as expected (we get a decent lead) we may want to rest Frank in the second half and let Dixon do some banging.

by 49erFanSince1950 on Sep 8, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't hate it

I assumed Brooks, Heitmann and James, hence why I only went through 5 players, I’d say Taylor (Curtis) could replace WB on the list though. I don’t think we’ll need a 5th safety…but I know he plays ST’s a lot so…

WOW I'll tell you what! The Sea Buzzards are already circling...

I went over to our Sister Site on SB Nation the Field Gulls just to see what the mood is over there (I would never post there, not my style to stir the pot…) just to read and find out what the fans thought and what the media thought of the upcoming game and the SeaHags season possibilities overall. HIDE THE RAZOR BLADES! I know Seattle can be kinda doom and gloom because of the constant overcast and rainy weather, but the fans over there are screaming the “R” word (REBUILDING). The Paper has the “R” word in their headlines to describe the SeaHags Season, and the beat reporter says after they have turned over half there roster since week 17 last season with trades, waiver wire pickups, and just an overall free-for-all turnover of the roster that was unprecedented in the years he has been a beat reporter for the Hawks, he was uncertain if they could make 8-8 this year!! They say the team is half new players. Not necessarily better players, just NEW players. I dont know how much of that is panic talking from the fans, but the article in their main newspaper sports section claiming “8-8 would be hard to achieve” is surprising and in many ways not the way I would think a coach would come into an NFL Situation no matter how bad it was when you got there. I have seen coaches come in and gradually make changes to improve a team, but half the team turned over in a matter of weeks and no time for them to practice together spells trouble for the Sea-Buzzards. Now dont get me wrong, I ain’t gettin soft and feelin sorry for them. We’ve “BEEN THERE DONE THAT !” It is just the level of doom and gloom you get from reading the fan posts and even the beat reporter that give you a level of concern. Are they just panicking, or are there major institutional changes that have been made that affect the effectiveness of the SeaHawks ability to compete at the NFL level. Because in 4 FREEKIN DAYS, the SeaHags will need to field a FOOTBALL team with the strangers they have milling around their HQ! If they have not practiced or gone through the pre season together, how are the SeaHags expected to compete in an NFL football game? If the numbers are accurate, half their team dont really know the plays, TJ wHoisyourMama just jumped off that sinking ship, and they dont have any idea who their starting running back is even though they have gone through tc and preseason and all. Sounds to me alot like a team in full blown panic mode. Pete Carol might have it under control, but the quotes I read on the “Field Gulls” site, their official SB Nation fan site, has actual snapshots of players coming and going “Tweets” that are asking really big questions like “WTF is management doing??” and “Where is all of this leading”?. It would seem to me that at the end of pre season, if you dont know what direction your team is going, I DO! Good luck to the Niners on Sunday, but if you get a chance go over and take the pulse of the average SeaHags Fan at their SB Nation site, you should just go check it out (not as nice as our fan site by the way…very slow). I would NEVER promote posting there unless they formally requested a post from a Niner fan, because I think that stirs up feelings and anger that make football not so fun to participate in. But sometimes if you read fan posts just RAW, unfiltered and real, you can get a real feel for how that team is doing. Well I read 10 posts in 2 threads and the theme was the same. HIDE the Razor Blades (although with today’s disposables, kids don’t even know why we would hide them!)! Those fans are ANGRY, they are depressed, They are stunned, they are confused, they dont understand, they are saying the word “Rebuild” a lot. For a team that just finished their pre season, you get the feeling that the fans dont know who half their players are! Even a position coach accidentally said the “R” word and QUICKLY recanted what he said, overly apologizing for using the wrong WORD! He meant to say “RELOAD”. Sure he did. If the perspective of the fans at the “Field Gulls” is any indication of how the game will play out Sunday, it might be a total free for all. Now Pete Carrol might have all of this totally under control, but Pete isn’t using his recruiting prowess to bring in hidden talent anymore. That only works at the college level. He has been scraping the bottom of the scrap heap of the NFL to replace players who were contributing veterans last season and the fans thought were entrenched veterans. The way players have acted, tweeted after they left, and what they are saying now gives the impression that Pete Carol might just have brought TOO MUCH change too fast, and that the Sea Buzzards might already be circling their season. But I guess we will find out what is really going on Sunday, Right? Maybe Pete has DRASTICALLY improved his NFL Prowess ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Carroll ), but he is a career .500 NFL Coach. I think Pete might be receiving a karma kick in the head over that whole USC mess he left…

Steve Young rankings

Those “In the know” have been East Coast wagon riders the whole time. Every year it is all about how tought all the East Coast division games are and how weak west coast is. Then how lucky teams liek the cardinals were to be able to beat their vaunted east coast teams. It is a mindset that can’t be broken until Singletary takes us to the big game 3-4 times in a row and keeps winning it (hey, dream big right?).

Of course then they’ll say East coast teams got beat up from their tough schedule which was why we were able to pull off what we did….there is no winning that battle.

Greatest thing I've read in quite a while

Wisely, KPIX put a microphone in the helmet of running back Anthony Dixon. During his 46-yard touchdown run, Dixon laughed after he made his final cut maybe realizing that he left yet another defender looking foolish. Color commentator Davis had another explanation. “Dixon was laughing in the middle of that run because he realized he put three people on the bubble.” That might be the best line of the preseason.

This made me chuckle.

The NFC west

I see Seattle and Arizona as being where we were in 2005-2007, with Arizona at the down slope of 2005 and Seattle (perhaps) and St.Louis making those first steps towards rebuilding. The 49ers should be about two years ahead of Seattle in this process. If we really believe the 49ers can compete with the better teams (I do not sense that the national media believe this yet, but I do), we should be rooting for the entire NFC west to get better so the division winner earns some respect. So maybe we should be rooting for Arizona and Seattle in all of their games against the stronger non-division opponents, and maybe they can win a few next year or the year after!

by seafood lover on Sep 8, 2010 9:05 AM PDT reply actions

I'm all for a stronger division for competition strengthening team

but I do not care if the division has respect. I think it’s better if they have no respect and are overlooked. That leads to a better chance at winning a ballgame if a team doesn’t respect another team and just plain old overlooks them. Sometimes not getting respect is better than being respected.

Also, I find it very difficult to root for the Cards or Hawks in any game, so while I hope the division gets stronger, I still won’t be hoping any of the teams not named San Francisco win. Except maybe for St. Louis every so often, or if I have money riding on any of the teams.

They deserve it

They weren’t exactly nice when the 49ers were in the toilet.

Sorry, but I've been so sick it's not even right.

For about two weeks now. Also, we have to pre-record, and right when we were going to, news came out that invalidated our notes. We were gonna have a roster cuts podcast, but then Singetary jumped the gun and cut people a day early.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

That's understandable

Singetary did jump everyone on those cuts. He’s been a bit cantankerous the entire offseason. So you aiming for a post Seahawk game podcast?

NFL Network's Top 100 players

I agree, Ninjames. There is no way there are 80 players in NFL history better than Steve Young.

Also, you could easily argue Steve Young is one of the 5 best QBs to play the game. You can’t have the highest career QB Rating, a Superbowl ring (in which game he won the SB MVP by setting the SB Passing TD record of 6), and have two league MVP awards and not be in the discussion.

Honestly, I’m one to argue that Steve, at his peak (throughout most of the 90’s) may have been the greatest QB to play the game. Yes, Joe has the 4 rings, and he IS the greatest if I were to pick one… but Steve may have been the most versatile, efficient, dominant QB to play the position. He was like Montana on juice (or drank, take your pick). If the 90’s 49ers had defenses anywhere close to the defenses in the 80’s… they may very well have had 4 more SB victories in the 90’s.

But I don’t really care… it’s still cool seeing Steve get honored. After all, the guy only had the biggest shoes of all time to fill… and he did it by winning and breaking records.

I don't mind Young being #80

Are talking about the Top 100 of all time. I saw 90-80 yesterday, it’s bit odd listing a few current players. I’m not sure Ed Reed is belongs 80’s. His career isn’t over and hasn’t exactly been iconic … it’s too soon to tell. I can see Kurt Warner on the list but Ed Reed? He hasn’t made it to a SB.

by bignerd on Sep 8, 2010 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't mind #81 either, I just disagree with the placement

Yeah, I thought Ed Reed was out of place. I think you have to be near the end of your career at the very least to be on such a list.

As for Young being #81, just because I disagree doesn’t mean I mind it. I see these lists as more a celebration of great players and great discussion point starters rather than “this guy is clearly greater than this guy.”

I’ll be picky about the Top 10 but mostly with you, 11-100 is just a celebration of the great players.

It’s important for people to think what I want them to think! If they think I’ve got the power great, and if they don’t, when I come crashing down on them they won’t know what hit them. Win-Win!
