49ers 2010 Roster Moves: Nate Davis clears waivers

Fooch's Update: Well it is now official. The 49ers announced they have signed Nate Davis to the practice squad and released QB Jarrett Brown.

There hasn't been official word from the 49ers, but Matt Barrows is reporting on Twitter that Nate Davis has cleared waivers and the plan is to sign him to the practice squad. Additionally, since the team wouldn't keep two quarterbacks on the practice squad, Jarrett Brown would seem to be the odd man out.

This certainly goes to show the thoughts around the league on Davis, as far as 53-man rosters are concerned. If he ends up on the practice squad, Davis can sign with any team in the league at any point. However, if a team signs him they have to place him o their 53-man roster for 3 weeks (I believe that's the time frame).

If and when the 49ers send out official word on this, I'll update the story.

well now I feel great about this

I really like T Smith but I wanted to see the team give Nate another year with a fire under his ass. This worked out perfectly. He wasn’t gonna play this year anyways and he’ll still get to learn on the PS.

Not very surprising

For a third QB in the 53-man roster at the beginning of regular season, NFL teams as a rule do not pick up a project QB who (1) has no regular season experience, (2) could not learn an offense in 16 months with the previous team. They look for experienced QBs who can pick up a new offense quickly, and step in with very practice with the first team in the outside chance he would be needed.

What happened to those waiver claims?

I guess teams changed their minds or did not exists. Oh well, I still think the 49ers ought to give him one more season, they gave Alex six! Davis isn’t as bad as some posters claim he is. He’s a bit of an ad-lib QB that Singletary has learn to accept.

by bignerd on Sep 8, 2010 2:15 PM PDT reply actions

I was wondering this too

I think that if they claim him they have to sign him to their 53, and he can turn that down. Once waiver process is over the original team can sign him to PS or if they don’t, another team can sign to their PS.

Practice Squad Info

Article XXXIV of the CBA:

If a player on the practice squad of one club (Club A) signs an NFL Player Contract with another club (Club B), (1) the player shall receive three weeks salary of his NFL Player Contract at the 53 player Active/Inactive List minimum even if he is terminated by Club B prior to earning that amount, and (2) Club B is required to count the player on its 53 play Active/Inactive List for three games (a bye week counts as a game) even if he is terminated or assigned via waivers to another club or is signed as a free agent to another club’s 53-player roster or another clubs practice squad prior to that time.

I think so, but I’m not 100% on this. I know that can happen when the team is trimming down to the 53-man roster, but not sure about it when a guy from the 53-man roster is getting cut. So, maybe not. Why did I even answer this? ;)

by Andrew Davidson on Sep 8, 2010 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I think that after a player clears waivers he can take offers from all 32 teams to join any Practice squad he wants

assuming he gets no 53-man roster offers.

But it doesn’t matter anymore.

You're correct

and once he’s on a PS he can join any other PS if he wants to. As a practice squad guy he’s a free agent until the time he signs on to the active 53.

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

by smileyman on Sep 8, 2010 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Not entirely true

He is free to join any other team, but they must sign him on their 53 man roster for a minimum of three weeks and pay him accordingly. Might be a pretty big gamble just to get someone on your practice squad.

by McTee on Sep 8, 2010 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

Either way, Nate is on the PS and he’s probably not going to get claimed all year.

Huh?

The rules are pretty simple. It’s more than likely there were no actual claims made. It’s possible that a claim was withdrawn, but it’s more likely that there were none, specifically because Jarrett Brown was released yesterday, so the 49ers knew something.

A team makes a claim, and signs him to their 53-man roster. You don’t claim a player for the practice squad, and yes, a player can turn down any offer he wants to. Also, at any time from now until he’s on our roster, he can be claimed.

Davis and Brown...

Are both projects so it makes sense from an organizational standpoint to keep the project that’s already been in the system for 2 years rather than the guy who’s brand new. I don’t think it’s a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ decision because we’re talking about practice squad players here and 3rd string QB’s at best this year. If anything, giving Davis one more year to mature and work towards being a professional is the smart move and worth the loss of an undrafted FA.

I don't think it says that much

Lot’s of young players are passed over and over looked early in their careers. I mean how many chances did other teams have to get a guy like Ricky Jean-Francois, Ahmad Brooks, or Dominique Ziegler? I don’t think anybody really holds that against them and most people seemed to think it was worthwhile to keep them around.

I guess you could say that it says the people who wanted to see Nate Davis start a game in the regular season were a little off their rocker, but I think most people had realized that awhile ago.

It’s pathetic. If you can report something accurately and w/ near assurance then do so. Otherwise, shut up!

It’s an odds game. If they think something is quite likely to happen, they take a gamble and say it’s going to happen. It’s no more insightful than gambling. If you know your subject, you can take a punt and if you’re right, claim it as a huge exclusive. If you’re wrong, move on and hope nobody remembers.

Not saying that was the case here, but no doubt that that’s the way it works in a lot of cases.

… Alex Smith is overshadowed by Nate Davis. It’s incredible how much we talk about him – he must be the most talked-about fourth-string quarterback in the NFL. Smith was made captain today and we still only talk about Nate – me included, we all do it, we cannot resist it. It’s a good thing, I think. Smith is under less pressure going into week one because his fan base is obsessed with a practice squad kid who has never played a snap in the NFL!

And the Thomas Clayton ones ...

… were just from Ninjames. He loved that bad boy even more than Ziegler.

He had a really big fanbase

I never cared for him but still…

I guess these guys are more intriguing since we know less about them and they haven’t let us down yet.
It’s all upside for them, they can’t really get worse.

Frank Gore is awesome

Did you know he’s shorter than Fooch?

That’s 3 comments right there.

Makes sense...

Figured he’d get signed to the PS. Now he can continue his development…and will have to prove he belongs on the roster by his work ethic. Should be a good situation all around.

At least it puts to rest the Brown is better than Davis talk.

The 49ers thought that Davis was worth having more than Brown.

Gazing into the crystal ball...

Once Troy Smith learns a little about the offense (say, week five or so), the 49ers will cut David Carr, promote Smith to backup role, and bring Davis up to be 3rd QB.

And then, maybe, just maybe… sign Brown to the practice squad.

as long as David Carr’s helmet from the future stays, I’m ok with this happening.

The outlines of a long-term strategy come into focus...

As has been noted, the 9ers have, by investing picks and trades in the offense, as well as establishing him as the clear #1 from the get-go, given Alex Smith every chance to succeed in 2010. But by simultaneously adding young qb talent to the roster alongside a veteran back-up, they have created a longer-term post-Smith plan B (which is to say variation thereof alongside potential FA signings and next year’s draft).

In other words, I read this as a plan by the team to have both Troy Smith and Nate Davis in the mix as potential heirs to the starting role in various scenarios where the team decides to part ways with Alex Smith after this season, in particular the scenarios where we don’t get a qb in the first round or two of next year’s draft or a high profile FA. Whether Carr is also in with the suitors is not self-evident, but if his preseason performance is anything to go by I would assume not.

It’s a pretty intelligent gaming of the situation for a team many criticize as lacking FO intelligence/a cogent strategic vision. But it also dovetails with other recent and not-so-recent roster decisions, including e.g. the decision not to pursue McNabb, that suggest an emphasis of 2011 and beyond, not just this year.

Makes sense to me.

Also pressure on David Carr

I think if Smith fails the draft is where they would go for QB help.

As far as Alex not cutting it this year...

My stern belief is that a 2011 1st round QB starts at QB in that senario.

that seems like a waste of the rest of the talent on the team

the window requires “win now” which I can’t see a 1st rounder doing (though Sanchez was in a similar scenario and did just enough last year).

I think that Sing is smart.

To me this was his thinking. He sees Davis coming along, & knows that he needs one more year before he breaks on the “53.” If he puts Nate on the PS someone might grab him. If he told Nate or not that he was going to dog him, so other teams will stay away from you. We really want you. We want you to make us make the hard choice to be the #2 QB next year. We have two years in you. We talk you down, release you the day after the we set our “53.” Nobody will want you after I am finished, clear wavers bring you back & keep it moving. After the famous “Nate Davis Pass” if Sing came out & said yea that’s our Boy! We love him! He is our QB of the future! He would not last half hour on wavers.
That’s what I think might have happen.

I like Nate Davis

but I’m also a realist. If the choice was between keeping him on the roster and picking up a guy like Troy Smith who should push David Carr for the backup job then I’ll choose Troy Smith everytime.

I think the reason Nate Davis is the most talked about 4th string qb in history is partly because most can see his raw ability to throw a football, the 49ers have had mediocre to horrible play at the position for years and that Alex Smith hasn’t filled us with confidence.

Nate is from my neck of the woods. Saw some of him in high school, a lot in college. He holds every record there is to hold for his teams at those levels. When he came out of HS people wanted to know why Ohio State didn’t even sniff him and the answer always came down to him being an academic headache.

It is strange that we are talking about Troy Smith learning the offense in a few weeks and possibly displacing David Carr and Nate Davis, according to Singletary isn’t close. That’s unsettling and may be a deal breaker for him in the league. After all many qbs have to learn new offenses over their careers. If Nate can’t do that then he’s got no value.
