Why track Adam Schefter and company for sports updates when TMZ clearly has the sources on the ground! TMZ caught up with 49ers tight end Vernon Davis somewhere and asked him about Kyle Orton. Davis responded in the video below by stating that "I love Kyle Orton ... I love him to death." He was asked if a deal was in the works and while obviously nothing could be done until a new CBA is hammered out, Vernon Davis sounds like he wouldn't mind having Kyle Orton as the 49ers next quarterback.
Orton is signed through 2011 and will earn $6.89 million with a $1.5 million roster bonus. Tim Tebow emerged as a force for the Broncos over the final three games and one has to wonder how long Orton will stick around. The Broncos will reportedly ask for a second round pick for Orton.
Is this a guy the 49ers should go after? While he is intriguing to some, I have to wonder if his accuracy makes him someone Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers should pass on. In 2009 he completed 62.1% of his passes, but other than that he's never surpassed a 60% completion percentage. When asked about specific characteristics he wants in a quarterback, Harbaugh included accuracy fairly high on the list. Given the rules in place protecting receivers and quarterbacks, is a guy who can rarely complete 60% of his passes a guy who should be running this offense? Or as a one year option is he worth it?
