The latest reports have Stanford defensive coordinator Vic Fangio interviewing with the Dallas Cowboys to fill the DC role in Big D. While I don't expect quite as much drama in the pursuit of Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator as we saw with Jim Harbaugh, I'm curious what other options are out there for the 49ers to pursue.
Greg Manusky remains the defensive coordinator for now, but the 49ers have let him interview for vacant DC positions around the league, along with the Carolina Panthers head coaching job. It seems the writing is sufficiently on the wall at this point and he is probably on the outs. If that's the case, the 49ers will be DC-less. Maiocco seemed to state that Fangio would be the 49ers DC as long as he actually wanted to continue working with Harbaugh. Now we find him interviewing for other jobs. What gives?
If Fangio were to go elsewhere, can folks provide some potential alternatives at defensive coordinator? I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the defensive coordinators and rising stars as defensive position coaches around the league. Although it's still too soon to say Fangio won't be the 49ers defensive coordinator in 2011, I'd still like to get an idea of what other options are out there as potential DC's for the 49ers. Feel free to go into the college ranks, position coaches, current DC's, whatever.
