Golden Nuggets: No Cam Newton, Please
Well, that was an entertaining game, no? I found it more enjoyable than any of the wild card games this past weekend, even if everyone's expectations were totally off. Either way, if there's one thing I can take from the game, it's that I do not, under any circumstances, want Cam Newton as the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers next season. I'm not basing it solely off of that game, but it definitely affirmed and solidified my position. He's just not that great of a passer, he doesn't make the best decisions and he's not all-that accurate. I see no upside to drafting him, honestly. I don't really know who I want at this point, but I imagine the picture will become a bit clearer in the coming months. All I know is, I have a pretty large amount of trust in Trent Baalke and Jim Harbaugh. Go Niners.
The 49ers current defensive coordinator, Greg Manusky, has plenty of suitors. So does their first candidate for the job: Vic Fangio. (SacBee.com)
Harbaugh has targeted Fangio as his first option for defensive coordinator. (CSNBayArea.com)
How high should expectations be for Jim Harbaugh's first season? Mine are high, personally - mostly because the NFC West is generally terrible. (Examiner.com)
The Harbaugh brothers are basically made for TV. That game will be primetime, easy, and I'd put a good amount of money on that. (PressDemocrat.com)
Barrows takes a look at the 4-3 defense and how the 49ers could utilize it. I would not be happy with the 4-3, personally - though I do acknowledge that we more or less have the personnel. (SacBee.com)
We got a general manager, and now we got a coach. What about a quarterback? Kevin Kolb? No thanks. (PressDemocrat.com)
Looking at these possible trade options and free agent pickups is nice and all - but it's going to be awhile before we can actively pursue any of those players. (CSNBayArea.com)

Those recaps Field Gulls do are certainly ... creative, pretty informative. Apparently the Cardinals consider themselves an option for Kevin Kolb as well. They can have him, as far as I'm concerned, he's not that good of a quarterback. Also, how does Shurmur get consideration for the head coaching job in Cleveland after leading that offense? It was terrible gameplanning and execution all around. I would hate to see McDaniels being the offensive coordinator of a division rival.

The more I hear about Blaine Gabbert
the more I like. Very strong arm, pro ready mechanics and footwork, smart. Sounds good to me. The only neative thing said about him is Missouri ran a spread offense and he might not be ready to run the WCO. But he can hold the notepad for a couple of years if we can get ahold of Orton.

Not the only thing
Overweight, need constant motivation, no a good look for a QB of the future =(
Here's money for a cab. Now entering sleep mode. beep beep beep zzzzzzzzz
Blaine has weight issues? Perhaps we can draft him, instruct him to “let himself go” and then get him to play Nose Tackle considering we might lose Franklin. Move over Mount Cody! There’s a new weight problem in town!

with baalke's hiring
at GM- there’s a VP of PP job opening and my sources told me that you have the inside track!
I don't get the excitement for Gabbert...
…who didn’t even complete 60% of his passes last year. The Mizzou guy we should have gotten when we had the chance was Chase Daniel.
Unmeasurables
I think when evaluating QBs there are things that you have to appreciate. First off on the biggest stage he lead his team. Notice I said lead.1. He is leader and a winner. He was able to handle the distractions and still perform. 2. He has focus. He is .6"6 255 and fast and elusive strong ARM and had the highest QB rating in the country.3. He has even the measurables. He did not play in a pro style offense so he does gave to learn the play book but Im confident that if we get a veteran QB for 2 years he would be unstoppable.

My God, give us a break! Did you watch the game last night? This guy won the Heisman? There is NO logical explanation for that!
I was VERY unimpressed! Although he’s only a freshman, I’d rather have Thomas. He’s a hell of lot more accurate. How did Newton win the Heisman? Oh yes, east coast press. They are oblivious to ANYTHING west of the Mississippi.

He has very questionable accuracy and terrible footwork, which will get him killed in the NFL. He’s a good athlete and he can toss it pretty damn far, can run the football … but that’s not at all what we’re looking for in a WCO let alone the prototypical NFL QB. He’s got terrible instincts when it comes to passing, has that awkward “jump pass” and never sets his feet. Probably has the worst mechanics of the top ten quarterbacks.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

no way
He short-armed a gimme touchdown to the flat. Looked like Alex Smith earlier this year missing wide open receiver for an easy TD. On most his completions, he had no pressure and the guy was 10 yards wide open; or there was no read and it’s a WR screen. It’s obvious that Andrew Luck is a far superior, NFL ready QB. I wouldn’t waste a pick on him. Think JaMarcus Russell with running ability…
not to mention
on the final drive, he made only one pass and it was a quick WR hitch. I don’t think even the coaching staff wanted him throwing the ball on the final drive..
one game?
Are you measuring this on one game or this whole season? Even Luck short hopped a throw or two in his game. Listen no one is perfect coming out this year but if u measure all that cam offers compared to FA or draftees no one can match Cam.

Ken Dorsey is STILL a leader. The CFL’s Toronto Argonauts have a young scout team and Ken has taken it upon himself to give these youngsters the direction they need!
by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 11, 2011 2:17 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
he's a cross btw vince young and jamarcus
who all had leadership skills. vince came from a more complex offense and showed impressive accuracy- which is why he’s had any success at the NFL level. Cam simply doesn’t have that kind of accuracy. and jamarcus had the big arm that cam has, but we’ve all seen what that’ll get you….
they were all fun to watch in college. i’ll appreciate that.
If we still had Singletary , i'd be fearful , but noway Harbaugh take's him ...!!
I'm your " Huckelberry "...it's just my game ...Jimmy Raye your no daisy ...!!
Good point
If Jim Harbaugh takes a QB in the draft then we’ll know who he likes. Until then there’s going to be a lot of guessing but then only thing that matters is his and Baalke’s opinions. This is going to be the most interesting draft in a long time.

totally agree
This draft, as much as the signing of Coach Harbaugh was, is huge for Baalke.
The Niners are missing a few pieces to the puzzle. It’ll be up to the two new guys to find those pieces and make this team a winner.
Personally I think we need a better pass rush and pass defence so a CB would be nice. But it’ll be tough to pass on a prime QB in that first round too. Can someone tell me why Ryan Mallet’s name hasnt been mentioned on the site as a potential yet? Is he not good enough or does no one think he’ll be around at #7?
Because Ryan Mallet's playstyle will not fit the WCO
Jim harbaugh is going to install the WCO into our offense..which includes a lot of short passes before we bomb one.
"Winning means being unafraid to lose." – Fran Tarkenton
so?
From what I’ve read, Mallet is a good QB. Why not pick him up and put him into the WCO. If he’s going to be the best available and we need a QB it’s solves itself.
Just to be clear
Mallet would be a reach for the system at #7 overall.

Because he's all arm and nothing else....
and WCO’s don’t care about arm strength.
It’s more about being able to read the defense, basically be an offensive coordinator as far as football IQ, and have a lightning release.
Niners vs. Ravens
Best news I got all season. Can’t wait to see the niners play here in Baltimore. Never been to a Niners game or a Ravens game. Also, I’ve never been stabbed with a crab leg before, but it looks like it’s going to be a day of firsts.

Same here, pretty excited to go to the game...
They also play at Philly and Washington I believe, so it would be cool to hit up the trifecta lol

Other than the obvious task of facing Vick
I am looking fwd to beating on the Cowgirls, Eli, and Shanahan next season.
Well you never know about Vick
With his style of play, chances are he might be injured when they play the Eagles

What's wrong with the 4-3?
I mean we have the MLB to do the job. The guy can cover a crazy amount of space and stop the runner every time. IF we can keep Manny to be strong side and take care of coverage, a decent weak side to take care of cut-backs, we can definately run it. I know we need a lot more depth to transition to this. I would be fine with the 4-3, but also fine with the 3-4 (I think we have a lot of needs and offensively is where we need to change the scheme)
D line depth for a 4 man front is questionable at best methinks. Pending we lose Franklin, that would be him, Soap, Smith, Ray McD and RJF… Would that cut it?
by Rod Blogojevich on Jan 11, 2011 8:20 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
You're right...
Depth is the major issue if we switch defensive schemes. It would probably be more difficult to switch to the 4-3 effectively than to bring in a new 3-4 scheme. We are still about the same amount of players short though, for both schemes.
by 9thevolution on Jan 11, 2011 8:39 AM PST up reply actions
You can be a lot more flexable in the 3-4 , and usually have more athletic people with the ability to be more creative in that scheme ...!!

Kellen Moore
is the the best WCO prospect from a BCS division school. Perhaps Mallett has something to say about that.
Best option is draft a secondary guy first.
Here’s a two names to consider:
CB Patrick Peterson, LSU
CD Prince Akamura, Neb

So why would you have the biggest college game of the year in an indoor stadium with 3 weeks to prepare and have a slippery field?
I had no dog in the fight but felt cheated that the speed guys were unable to perform on the outside.
Makes no sense to me.

Cam Newton would be a huge mistake.
I would not draft Cam Newton under any circumstances. His passing accuracy is truly atrocious. He was missing wide open guys right and left. Oregon lost that game because their D-line could not stop the run and force Cam to pass. Every time Cam dropped back to pass, I expected him to either miss his receiver or toss an interception. The only completions he had were to guys who were 5 yards open. You aren’t going to have those kind of windows to throw into in the NFL. There is no way that he can be an NFL passer, maybe a tight end or a full back.
Agree on Newton
But Oregon lost that game because they didn’t score when they should have

Will Newton even go in the 1st?
might be a late rounder, but there’s really not enough there to warrant a top pick. fairley is head and shoulders their top player, and as so- he should go in the top 10.
So lemme get this straight
the WCO is an offense that uses short passes. So instead of swinging a broadsword and aiming for the kill every swing you stab a guy 50 times?
Kellen Moore is awesome
Katie Mcgrath is our savior
My dream draft
1. Jake Locker QB UW 2. Jimmy Smith CB Colorado 3. Casey Mathews OLB Oregon. 4a. Owen Marecic FB/LB/ST Stanford 4b. Alex Henery K Nebraska 5. BPA 6a.Clay Nurse DE/OLB Illinois (depending on combine/proday) 6b. Chase Beeler C Stanford 7a. BPA 7b. BPA
The West Coast Offense
Now, the WCO has evolved a great deal since the old 49ers days, but I remember the purest form of the WCO under Bill Walsh was a beast to defend because it was so flexible that it had a counter for everything the defense tried to do. As contrasted to the “vertical passing game” in which you would punt 10 times and hit two long bombs for TD a game, the WCO stretched the field horizontally more often than vertically. Hitting the HB/FB out in the flat, the WR on short in routes. The passing percentage had to be high because the gains were usually less than 10 yards, but it leant itself to 3rd downs which were makeable. In the WCO the pass completion percentage was so high that your passing was as low risk as your running attack, which led to the phrase “passing to set up the run” later in the game. Accuracy and timing in your QB was paramount because you had to hit your man in stride so that they could get “yards after the catch” which were crucial to really get the most out of the offense. That was really where Montana excelled, that and making the right read every single time. It was really something to watch him out there. I was surprised every time the team had to punt. I seem to recall one game in which the 49ers had no punts at all.
ok that what I thought

Yes
Joe and Jerry were the greatest of all time, and their bread and butter was the 5 yard slant.
The key is not throwing when the WR is open. The key is knowing the coverage and knowing the route and throwing the ball so it gets to the WR the instant they make their cut and look back for the ball.
Requires entirely different personnel. Your QB needs more intelligence than arm, and your WR’s must be excellent route runners whether they have speed or not. Jerry wasn’t that fast.. but his routes were surgical.
The game Rhaegar is referring to was against the Buffalo Bills… neither team punted the whole game. Bills won 34-31.
not much to choose from
on the draft side and the fa side. cam did look bad, and none of the fa’s look good either. carson parmer, mcnab, tavaris, all garbage. kolb sucks but he’s the least sucky out of that bunch. and we just don’t have good luck drafting a qb in the first round. next year may be a lot longer than we had hoped.
Alex Smith is garbage...
Draft CB Peterson or get Asomugha then get a WCO QB
Whatever best QB that is compatible with the WCO would really help us beat Carroll next year. Besides we are going to win the draft wars with them.
