Who is the most hated 49er?

We constanty bash our own players, that is part of being a fan.  We love our guys and we cheer for them most of the time, but when a mistake is made, few hide their emotions.  Some have gone to the point of flat out booing or chanting for a replacement.  I want to know who is the most hated 49er on NinersNation?

Star-divide

Alex Smith: The first overall draft choice has had a rocky relationship with the 49ers.  He has not lived up to his draft position or pay.  He has lost a lot of games and has folded under pressure.  He has been booed at for a long time with the escalation resulting in the comical chant of "We want Carr".  Even when he does good, he is booed.  In his defense, he has given 100% effort, is a nice humble guy, and has shown fire and anger at his situation.

Nate Clements: Another over-payed player who has not lived up to the billing of a shutdown corner as he was unwisely paid to do.  He gets burned often and has shown that he has lost a step.  Most damning was his unawareness to slide when getting the game winning interception only to fumble it back to the Falcons.  He has been our best DB and is a very good run-stop corner recognized around the league.

Chilo Rachal:  This player is also criticized for his draft placement: above DeSean Jackson.  He has shown lapses in judgement and has been the weakest link in the line.  He has had games that show that does have the talent to be in the NFL, followed by a game that shows he should be working in fast food.  He is a hard worker that is showing improvement that has temporarily quenched hatred towards him.

Issac Sopoaga: A very large clumsy DE known for his strength before his skills.  Issac is more hated for his past as a comically inept football player who was best known for falling down around the ball.  This year however, he has shown a large amount of improvement that now requires two men to make him fall down.  It is also a shame to see him at a position he is not built for, but not a shame that his opposite side's fire is rubbing off on him.

Moran Norris: The best run stopper on the team is a running back.  With a declining skill set that was low to begin with, Moran is known as a poor rusher, poor receiving option, slow, and predictable.  Most teams know the 49ers will rush up the middle with Norris in the game because he isn't going to run with the ball, catch the ball, or block to the outside.  He doesn't play as much as the others on the list and he is a favorite of Frank Gore (which must count for something I assume)  Also worth mentioning is that he has been replace by Soap and was not missed.

Michael Crabtree: The resident diva that has not been.  After stealing him in the draft, Crabs held out for a better deal.  Thanks to Hammer, we finally saw what he could do and we were very pleased.  Then he regressed into receiver who does not receive.  His route running was suspect, his work effort also when he had injuries during preseason to the point team captain Vernon Davis got into an altercation with him.  He has become a ghost on gameday and only gets touchdowns seemingly on accident.  He is one of the most talented players on the team and has had a lot of quarterback inconsistency to fault his performances.

Gotta be Nate Clements

And I am SO tired of people saying that he is our best DB. It just makes you look ignorant. If you had watched the games you would realize that teams RARELY throw it at Spencer, and often don’t even throw it at Brown. They throw it at CLements, and they do it for a reason. Spencer usually has his guy locked up, Brown had solid coverage the 2nd half of the season. Clements on the other hand gets burned on double-moves (twice in one Seattle game!), and even when the ball is there he doesn’t knock it down (one of the last couple games the ball was underthrown, jump ball, Clements saw it but couldn’t even touch it).

(Re the conflicting Harbaugh reports:) If you were to pass Harbaugh's $50,000 bathroom this week, you'd hear raucous laghter. The source? The man himself laughing his face off as he fires off "anonymous" tweets and texts from "sources" to the prominent beat writers and media folk.

Nate Clements

Led team in takeaways (led team in INTS with Spikes and Spencer, Led team in fumble recoveries) Third on team in tackles behind superstar Willis and pro bowl player Spikes. Led DBs in sacks (also tied with Spencer) I will hear your arguement, but the way you state it makes you appear like you are attacking me. Here are my reasons… ignorant or not.

by mcwagner on Jan 11, 2011 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

He led the team with 3 INTs… When has 3 interceptions proven that a corner is a GOOD corner? That doesn’t even matter, because I have always been one to say a cornerback is not judged on how many interceptions he makes, because zone scheme corners tend to have more interceptions than man to man corners. Clements is not a cover corner by any means, and he’s usually isolated on the opposing teams best receiver. He also has shown low football IQ (Falcons game fumble) and no lateral movement. He consistently gets BURNED on seam routes because he can’t turn his hips fast enough, and is one of our slowest corners. It’s time to move him to safety if we want to get any value out of him because his quickness and agility have gone way downhilll…

The reason Clements is my most hated Niner is simply because he is paid around 10x his skill level. He is a huge liability even lining up against the opponents #2 corner. And if we won the Falcons game we might be where the Seahawks are now…

When it’s all said and done though, Alex will be the most hated Niner.

Moran and Chilo are gaining momentum

If I was a Clements fan he would not be on this list, he is hated. I stated that some could argue that he is the best DB we have, thats like wondering whose fart smells worse at the stadium bathroom. I am saying that he is the best statistically and is very good in run support. When I say that Clements should make the pro bowl then I will accept my lumps

by mcwagner on Jan 11, 2011 12:48 PM PST up reply actions

I agree he’s good in run support, he’s a very good tackler for a corner as well. That’s why the switch to safety makes sense. I agree that Clements is not the Niners biggest problem, but I guess the reason he catches so much flak is his salary.

by shahbazi3 on Jan 11, 2011 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

oh I agree

If he was cheap and he slid in ATL all would be forgiven. But this is not reality. We paid him too much, he has been getting burned, the opposing teams have started to pick on him as the season wore on. I would not be opposed to releasing him. Mays will improve, he has the best work ethic on the team, and Goldson is better than Clements at safety if that even matters as Reggie Smith is quietly becoming a more solid player.

by mcwagner on Jan 11, 2011 12:58 PM PST up reply actions

Youre waaaay off base.

Spencer is constantly abused and Mays is a bog part of the reason we aren’t having 100 yard rushers vs our defense. Brown isn’t a 5th corner on most teams. He’s small slow and has no ability. Clements made more plays than any d back he just happen to make 3 of the worse.

My vote is for

Vernon Davis

considering

that Alex Smith and Moran Norris both won’t be on the 2011 49ers squad, I have to go with “I like Tacos” Chilo Rachal (you guys invited Eric, I thought he gave you the creeps?).

by Andrew Davidson on Jan 11, 2011 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

Don't mess with him when he's hungry

I’m shocked that Norris isn’t higher on the polls, but that can be due to indifference. I wonder if this would change if we found out that Norris was resigned?

by mcwagner on Jan 11, 2011 11:08 AM PST up reply actions

yep

Norris would be on the top of list if he gets resigned.

by Andrew Davidson on Jan 11, 2011 11:14 AM PST up reply actions

I'm with you buddy

How in the world is Morran Norris not destroying this poll?

Alex Smith haters will hate him a lot, but he seems to have his share of supporters/well-wishers. Moran Norris, on the other hand, has almost no supporters.

I think it’s because he’s buried down the list.

by brundylop on Jan 11, 2011 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

I mentioned the bad QB

but that didn’t affect Vernon as much. Crabtree was a disappointment even by his most loyal fan. But he has way too much upside. The diva attitude and preseason and not backing it up in the regular season would be were some anger could come from

by mcwagner on Jan 11, 2011 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

I am Crabtree's most loyal fan

and he was not a disappointment, it’s all on the QBs!

Vernon Davis had several more years in the league to develop, and Crabtree would be doing the same amount of damage if LBs were trying to cover him. That’s not taking anything away from VD (he’s one of the best), but Crabs faces different problems than that of a TE.

by Andrew Davidson on Jan 11, 2011 11:13 AM PST up reply actions

and to be serious

sure Crabs was a letdown, and I do think he needs to be more active in the preseason.

Write-in vote for Dashon Goldson?

Well, maybe just honorable mention. He’s actually an OK player with flashes of brilliance and incompetence… but he’s an absolute jerk to certain fans on Twitter.

Biting the hands that feed, especially when he hasn’t given said hands much to cheer about, is the quickest way to find yourself on my chump list.

The other guys on this list annoy at times (OK, usually, moran norris), but none are dunderheaded enough to actually defend their own performances, much less be rude about it.

by LA49er on Jan 11, 2011 11:45 AM PST reply actions

Good call. I based this on the yelling and screaming on other posts. Goldson has been very inconsistant this year and is one of the few 49ers to have never responded to any of my tweets. (I haven’t tried much, Willis writes back everytime like clockwork) An honorable mention indeed

by mcwagner on Jan 11, 2011 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

Jumping on this bandwagon

Goldson was never really good. He was a slight upgrade for the time and people bought into the hype that he was actually good. I’d say he easily tops my list as he gets burned worse than anyone in our secondary.

by 9thevolution on Jan 11, 2011 12:38 PM PST up reply actions

In retrospect, perhaps Golson should have replaced Ice

I based this poll on the amount of venom each player has received this year. At the beginning of the year, Sopoaga would be leading and Goldson was beloved. With improved play and not a single vote has shown that Ice is not hated.

Flashes of brilliance my ass, he is the worst d back.

by rlott#42 on Jan 11, 2011 2:27 PM PST up reply actions

He had a decent end to the 2009 season

And he’s pretty good at run D. But where you really want a good D-back, pass coverage, he will stink up the place 8 times out of 10.

Possible coaching potential, given the fact that he calls out the plays to the rest of the D, if he can get his head out of his own backside.

I actually like all of these guys.

If Alex Smith went on to have success elsewhere, I’d feel my hopes for him were validated.
If Nate Clements didn’t cost so much he wouldn’t get nearly the flak he does.
Chilo Rachal isn’t the only problem on the line. I’d be happy if he miraculously changed into DeSean Jackson, but he still has potential. He’s basically 1 year older than a college senior.
Issac Sopoaga is a decent 3-4 DE—holds up well decently against the run.
Michael Crabtree will be better in 2011—mark my words. Better QB play leads to better WR play, and he benefits most of all from Harbaugh’s hiring.

Wait—Moran Norris?! I HATE this guy!

Props to York/Baalke for reeling in Harbaugh. Now everybody get back to work!

Chilo for me. Too many times when I saw a sack or a run for a loss there he was standing there no defender around and just standing there. WTF atleast look like you’re trying to be in the play.
Moran I liked but since he got back from Det he hasn’t looked so good.
The rest I like and hope to see them grow.

If you ask for the most hated 49er, the answer is Alex Smith

But if you ask who I hate the most, it would be Moran Norris.

Historically, it would be Preston Riley (if you’re under 40 years old, google the name) or Roger Craig, who inexcusably fumbled away the historic three-peat. The 49ers were a first down away from securing a third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl and likely victory over Buffalo, when Craig fumbled on a simple dive up the middle. I’ll never forgive him for that.

Roger Craig fumble

That was a heartbreaker (and I was there), and it cost Steve Young his Super Bowl debut, but it’s not like he was Wendell Tyler out there, fumbling twice a game. Bad things happen to good players.

also norris got me onto the “let’s-trade-frank-while-we-can” bandwagon, cause frank insists on keeping norris around only because they’re friends.
