Yesterday at lunch time asmithisaverage put together a FanPost that opened up an unofficial discussion of the list of potential quarterbacks that could be available this offseason. It's excellent timing because I also received some new odds from Bodog that included some free agency odds.
Who will be the starting QB for San Francisco Game 1 of the 2011 Regular Season?
Other Free Agent QB 5/2
Donovan McNabb
Vince Young
Alex Smith/Troy Smith/David Carr 5/1
A 2011 Draft Pick QB 5/1
Kyle Orton
Marc Bulger
Even though David Carr does happen to be on the 49ers roster right now, I'd still put the Carr/Smith-squared odds as the real long shot. Trent Baalke has stated several times, most recently on Pro Football Talk Live that the 49ers QB of the future is not on the roster right now. Technically the two Smiths aren't on the roster, but it's probably semantics to argue that right now.
The turnover in the front office combined with the labor issues makes it fairly difficult to even speculate what the 49ers might do. I recall reading somewhere that head coach Jim Harbaugh felt he could find a QB in the second or third round to develop into the long-term answer for the 49ers. Are people ready to buy into that?
Free agency may not happen until after the draft if a CBA isn't signed by April. If a deal is not done and the draft happens before free agency, does that escalate where you pick a QB? I ask because without knowing who is going where in free agency it's hard to plan out your draft moves like normal. Should a change in the offseason acquisition calendar change the 49ers' quarterback plan?
