Thanks to proevn for posting this FanShot, but I thought it was worthy of a separate post at this point. 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Johnson has signed on with Rick Neuheisel to become the offensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins. He joins Charlie Weiss as the second NFL offensive coordinator to leave a pro team for a college team (not that he was guaranteed a job next year with the 49ers anyway). This is notable for the 49ers reasons (officially looking for a new OC), but also because the Bruins actually have an offensive coordinator in Norm Chow (former of USC and the Tennessee Titans). I'd imagine this means he's leaving for somewhere else.
Mike Johnson got a lot of crap on this site but one has to wonder how much Mike Singletary imposed his own offensive beliefs on Johnson. I doubt we'll ever know, but it's certainly possible he was somewhat restricted in what he would kind of scheming he wanted to run. The best example of this scenario comes from when Mike Singletary was mic'd up for the Seahawks game (thanks to Maiocco for tweeting this). I do think I'll keep an eye on the UCLA offense in 2011 just to see what Johnson can do out there. I don't know enough about how involved Neuheisel is, but I'll be curious to see how the Bruins offense performs.
In the meantime, we now get to wait and see who will become the next offensive coordinator of the 49ers. Aside from Stanford OL coach Tim Drevno, there have been no other names mentioned in connection with the 49ers OC position (as far as I can tell). Any thoughts on potential OCs out there?
