The Strong Saftey Situation: Taylor Mays or Reggie Smith?
I was wondering what people think about the strong saftey situation. We have both Taylor Mays and Reggie Smith who I think are both good young talents. I personally prefer Taylor Mays. He is super fast and a big hitter. I think he could be very good. He lacks the coverage skills, but that is because USC played him so deep back, and I think that will come with more experience. I did not agree with Singletary this year by playing Reggie Smith more. However, I do like Reggie Smith more this year than I did before. I think he is good, and also has good potential. He has better coverage skill that Taylor Mays, but less physical talent. I would still rather see Taylor Mays play more this next year and have the starting job. What do you think? Taylor Mays or Reggie Smith?

What about Curtis Taylor?
He seemed to be doing well until he got injured, also I dislike it when a player gets in just because of hype not because he is better then all at his position, Smith seems to be the best cover safety we have but needs to get bigger IMO to stop runners, Mays started off good in the first two games then started to get burned all of a sudden(isn’t he supposed to be fast for his size too?) that’s why they inserted Smith next to Goldson, I would like to see C.Taylor to get a chance since he seemed to look ready to play with the first team. Is it just me or why are we looking at college coaches to fill our vacancies? and coaching in college is way different in coaching in the NFL, I have no idea why we are putting so much hype on Harbaugh considering no game has been played yet.
Harbaugh and all of the coaches he is looking at bringing have coached in the NFL

I forgot about Curtis Taylor
I completely forgot about Curtis Taylor. However, I don’t think that he is as good as either of them

Easy. Reg no doubt..
I personally doubt Mays will work out.

Taylor Mays all the way...
Under the right tutelage, he’ll learn how to cover better.

Trade Goldson
and start both.
Mays – SS
Smith – FS

How can you trade someone who doesn't have a contract?

Obviously this year, why would I say that if it was next year..

49ers have no use for franchise tag
this year or do they.
Only player I'd consider giving the franchise tag.....
Manny Lawson. The rest of the bums leaving aren’t worth even the transition tag, which is worth the average of the top 10 salaries at that position.

Not manny Lawson
He may demand a high amount of money, but not as much as the franchise tag would give him
Players I'd consider for Franchise Tag:
Franklin, Lawson. That’s it.

Mays
from what i hear mays is a workaholic, i see him only getting better. I also agree with flyincow555 i did not like r.smith getting all the p.t..

Why do you not like him? That doesn't make much sense.
Better in coverage than Mays. He won’t make mistakes.

I didn’t completely dislike it, but I think Mays has more potential. He just still needs to learn coverage better. What I disliked a lot was the time frame when Singletary couldn’t make up his mind on the two. However, Singletary couldn’t make up his mind on anything

Thats true
It didn’t help having a rookie Safety with poor CB play. I love Mays as well. I truely believe that he will be a great safety just need a little time on the bench.

Both...
Since Goldson isn’t likely to come back, we should end up starting Smith at FS and Mays at SS. And we should draft a true FS at some point in the next year or two.
Play the guy...
With the better coverage skills.
We’re already #2 against the run in yards per attempt.
We could fall to #10 and still be good enough against the run.
We have to get out of the bottom 10 against the pass…
Repeat after me kids.. this is a passing league, passing efficiently and stopping the pass makes you dominant. This is a passing league, passing efficiently and stopping the pass makes you dominant.
Repeat it until those idiotic outdated ideas of “ramming the ball down peoples throats for 4 quarters” are as gone as Mike Singletary.
The dead ball era is over. This is the golden age of the forward pass.
UHMM..........................
I say just fire the secondary coach and actually coach the player we have, uhmmm……
good, it already happened
