Fooch's Update: 49ers just sent out a press release and Drevno will be the offensive line coach. No word on what this means for Mike Solari.
Fooch's Update #2: Apparently the 49ers are going to retain Solari and have two offensive line coaches.
The dominos are quickly falling
into place as Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly hired Vic Fangio and Tim Drevno away from the Stanford Cardinal coaching staff. Combined with the hiring of Greg Roman, that brings the Stanford assistants move total up to three. Fangio is coming in as the defensive coordinator, while Drevno's specific role is not yet known. Many think he'll be the tight ends coach, with Mike Solari expected to return as offensive line coach. There are a lot of question marks folks have raised about Fangio as defensive coordinator. Later today Florida Danny will have a post on some of those issues and how they stack up after looking at the numbers.
What's particularly interesting about these first few hirings is the Stanford connection and Jim Harbaugh connection for all of them. While it's good to have new ideas coming in, having a group of coaches Harbaugh is comfortable with could make the transition into the NFL a lot easier. If some Singletary assistants are retained I think the team will be in a position to get a good mix of opinions on how things should operate. What's even more valuable in all this is that all of these coaches have NFL experience under their belt. I'd be a lot more concerned if they were all college only guys coming into the NFL.
Is Vic Fangio a good fit as defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers?
