Golden Nuggets: No Craziness
Well that came together rather quickly, didn't it? There was nothing crazy happening, no declined interviews and things of that nature. Jim Harbaugh went out and brought in the coaching staff that he feels comfortable with. I'm not all that comfortable with everyone from Stanford coming in like that, trying to recreate something perhaps - but there's really no arguing that there's some great minds at work here. We've got a few strong offensive minds in the building now, and that's huge for the 49ers. This team is probably the most talented in the division and pending a player who can bring it all together (quarterback), we should have the coaching in line to do what we need it to. I like these guys. Let's see what they've got. I'm doing these early so I can get some sleep, I'm exhausted and I'll be in a bit of a hurry. If you see anything I happen to miss, post 'em up on your own in the comments for everyone else. And here's some links. Enjoy, folks.
Vic Fangio, Greg Roman and Tim Drevno were added to the coaching staff yesterday. Nice how that all fell together, yeah? (PressDemocrat.com)
Drevno and Solari will be working together on the offensive line. I honestly did not expect that. I wonder if it will end up being a problem. (CSNBayArea.com)
Not only did the 49ers add a defensive coordinator, they added a defensive backs coach, Ed Donatell - and that's a name I'm aware of and respect. I like it. (SFGate.com)
Here's a little note regarding Jim Harbaugh's first quarterback. (PressDemocrat.com)
We gained some coaches - but we lost one too. Greg Manusky is in as defensive coordinator for the Chargers and I believe he'll do some good things there. (NFL.com)
According to Harbaugh, these assistant coaches he's brought in know how to win. That seems like it's a good quality. Ya know ... winning. (MercuryNews.com)

The biggest upgrade..
is probably Donatell.
It could very well be that our problem at cornerback is not a lack of talent or speed, but coaching and assignments.
Maybe if the CBA is worked out soon enough for the normal minicamps to take place next year we’ll see Clements play like the top 5 corner we paid for, and we’ll see a breakout season for Mays and drastic improvement from Spencer.
if you're actually expecting those things you're being a bit naive
If you see a breakout season from Mays it’ll be because he’s learned from his first season, not a new staff teaching him how to properly play. You’re not going to see “drastic improvements” on two vets like Spencer and Clements. They’ll play about the same ( which for Clements this year was ok, and Spencer was a little below ok )
The corners were rarely out of position, when they were beat it was just corners getting beat. It happens. The worst coverage came from the linebackers and safeties, who were often well out of position giving up easy 8 yard first down receptions on 3rd and 7.

Well..
Expecting drastic improvements.. no.
But some improvements.. yes.
Even with the veterans.. you must realize that they’ve never had a competent coaching staff.
A great deal of our mistakes in the secondary are mental mistakes… the kind of thing that can be coached up… .even in veterans. Unless of course they take some hard headed attitude about knowing their job already and not needing any coaching.. in that case.. politely show them the door.
Looks like Clements...
…won’t be back next season. The 49ers plan on asking him to take a pay cut if he wants to remain with the team, and judging from a statement he made near the end of the season regarding his contract situation, he’ll have none of it. I can’t find a link to the quote, but it was something along the lines of “I signed a contract, and I plan on honoring it.” Sounds noble enough, but we all know he’s worth nowhere near what he’ll be making next season. If good ol’ “double move” Nate won’t even entertain the idea, then good riddance to him.

I love that we have TWO offensive line coaches!!
I can only imagine Solari will continue to teach fundamentals, while the new guy will teach the players some situation specific blocking schemes. I hear they can get complicated. DO YOUR HOMEWORK CHILO!!!
Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.
Only thing I wonder...
is if that means Brown is out the door. Kinda liked him too

No McNabb. Josh Johnson or Vince Young are much better options. If you haven’t seen the video posted below by Mangoman check it out. Josh Johnson is a BEAST in Harbaugh’s system.

Ok but think of it this way
Would you rather have a guy like Johnson that’s been a backup his whole career and will cost like a 3rd or 4th rounder or Donovan McNabb who knows the WCO and has started for nothing but the money in his contract? If we could get him for a 5th or later or such I’d go for it. Vince Young worries me a good bit as far as we are going into the playoffs and all of a sudden he flips out and doesn’t make the game.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 15, 2011 10:46 AM PST up reply actions
I will bring this name up again
I have seen josh johnson in 3 of his 4 career starts and I question his arm, looks like he floats some passes; it just looks like they are up there for ever. The guy I wonder about is Trent Edwards who seems to have all the things you would want in a QB but hasn’t really done anything either. I don’t know if thats cause he played for the bills or he just doesn’t make good decisions. I feel like he has more talent than any QB we can draft (he is only 27, 28 next year) (except maybe Locker but that is questionable) and he is a FA that has ran some form of the WCO. Under Harb it just seems like he could work out any problems he does have
Would you want to go into next season...
with Trent Edwards as your starting QB? That’s the real question isn’t it?
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 15, 2011 11:18 AM PST up reply actions
I really don't want any of the FA's
that we have a realistic chance of getting. There isn’t one proven FA we have the possibility of getting except McNabb and he is old. Kolb,Orton, Johnson, Edwards, or any other name isnt proven to do anything at this point. Its a total crap shoot but if you have the abilities eveyone wants in a QB and know the system aren’t you that much further along in the game? Oh I forgot the head case VY he is semi established but can’t get him for obvious reasons of insanity.
Neither do I
Except for Peyton Manning.

#7 for Kolb?
Saw 2 reports one saying the Eagles would consider a 1st rounder for Kolb. Another saying #7 and a 2nd or 3rd round pick in 2012 for Kolb and the Eagles 2nd round pick this year (#54?). Not a Kolb fan but I don’t know if this has been stated yet for all the Kolb fans out there
No way giving that up for Kolb

Josh Johnson
The article by Eric Branch tells a lot. Johnson was pretty much terrible until Harbaugh came along and installed a system that was QB friendly, then Johnson was a beast. Back in that same system I think he could do big things, I’d much rather the team give up a middle round pick for him than sign McNabb and see him perform like he did in Washington this past season. Shannahan rund a WCO and McNabb didn’t excell in it, that leads me to believe he won’t in SF either.

I agree about McNabb
I have read the article on Johnson but I have also seen him as a pro and I doon’t know if he has the arm to be the answer or even the fill in. I watched every highlight real I could find college and pro and I kept seeing the same thing which was the ball hanging in the air for a long period of time. I don’t think he is the worst choice but I was wondering why Edwards name hadn’t been brought up at least on this particular page? He has a fast release, big arm, played in a WCO in college I believe, his still relatively young, and he has bay area ties. He is a FA so no need to give up a pic or big money. Just a thought I was throwing out there
Not a bad idea
Especially with Harbaugh’s ability to take good athletes and make them great QB’s. I wouldn’t be totally against this move, I’d rather see Edwards than McNabb… Then again, I’d rather see Manraj7 than mcNabb too.

Yeah i just think Edwards has the skills he just needs to be molded and we have one of the best in the game to do mold a QB. Just seems like a good fit especially with Edwards being a Stanford guy (even if Harbaugh wasn’t coach).

He said he wants to switch to Safety.

Yes, instead of Clements
Champ replaces Clements, we get a hot new rokkie CB. Champ and Ed Donnitelli teach the rookie, he eventually takes over for Champ while Champ goes to nickle and part-time safety roles for another year. Now we’re talking about a good backfield. Not great, not shut down, but good enough to not be a weakness anymore.
that is pretty much what I was thinking. I see our options (if CBA gets done) as Champ, Nnamdi, and Carlos Rogers. Now that we have Donatell I wondered if he had any pull with Bailey, like you said having a vet. teaching the draft pick is what I would like to see
JJ is a really good corner and is 26.

I’ve heard he wants to stay with the bengals even if that means franchise tag, but that he is looking for a long term deal. I think Cromartie is overrated and don’t know if he is willing to leave the jets. Nnamdi hinted at wanting to stay in oakland, and to me that leaves the old man Bailey or Carlos Rogers who I like but he gets no hype with Hall playing opposite and no pash rush
I heard Bailey is probably staying.

I can’t imagine why Nnamdi would want to stay in Oakland. His subtle hints and body language seem to indicate he wants out…Now if Al Davis decides to give him another record breaking contract, who knows what he’ll do. Nnamdi and a top-flight rookie CB…mmm, makes my mouth water. No homo.

Nice article on Harb's first QB
Amazing how he brought someone from disaster to on The NFL radar. And from div I-AA level no less. The man just seems to know how to bring out the best in QB’s. And I’m pretty confident he’ll be no different at the NFL level. Whoever he brings on I’m going to trust will be a decent choice.
That said, I hadn’t seen this until this morning, but for anyone who hasn’t seen them yet, you need to check out Josh Johnson’s college stats. There are really good reasons why I really think we should at least find a way to bring this guy onto the roster. He will likely come quite cheaply. Josh Johnson with the right coaching has a great chance to make some noise in the league. His former coach can help make that happen.

with joy when I read this. Mortensen talked about why he liked watching Harbaugh’s team in the Orange Bowl this year:
Once they got in the second half and they knew the way Virginia Tech’s defense was responding to their formations and their personnel groups, they could create mismatches where they could create very big plays.

The Bills were jerks and ran a real play lol
Remembers one play the Pats did
they told the refs early about it but had the WR off the field (I think) then he ran on the field and into the end zone to catch a pass by Vinatieri.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 15, 2011 12:16 PM PST up reply actions
That’s most definitely against the rules, as basically would have been lining up offsides or had to have intentionally run out of bounds. It’s more plausible that he walked on to the field just as they go set and the defense never noticed him and no one had responsibility for the guy, resulting in an easy TD.
Yeah I forget what the specifics were
but it was a fun play to watch LOL
