Official NFL Draft Thread: 1/16/11 [UPDATED]

With Andrew Luck heading back to Stanford, the quarterback class for this 2011 NFL Draft is looking a bit on the skimpy side of things. There is no question that with him heading back for a junior year... and possibly even a senior year that the upcoming draft was shaken up a bit.

With the 49ers in desperate need of some attention at the quarterback position, it's a mystery as to which way they will head with it. However, if there is one thing that we saw while the 49ers new head coach was at Stanford is that he is one of the best at coaching young talent up to meet their potential.

In this new thread, I went ahead and took an in-depth look at NFL teams needs and plugged in who I thought they would pursue in the draft based on that. Of course you have to consider and factor in best player available for each team as well. Some teams may have two or three big time needs at a few different positions.

So with all of those factors, let's look at me new "unofficial" mock draft. The "official" mock will be the last one of the year I do. The draft order is not set in stone yet. so I have used another sites draft order for the selections for this post.

Star-divide

1st Pick Panthers - DT -- Nick Fairely -- Auburn -- 6'4", 300 LBS: Fairely played like an animal in last nights National Championship game. He is by far the most destructive force to offensive lines this year. The Panthers are basically starting from ground zero and there is no better place than to start than by building a dominant defensive line.

2nd Pick Broncos - 34OLB -- Robert Quinn -- UNC -- 6'5", 271 LBS: The Broncos could go three different ways with this selection, possibly four if they trade. But despite their need to build a better Dline, and to get younger at the cornerback position, they lack a pass rush in the worst kind of way. The other two positions of DL and CB are much deeper than the outside linebacker position. If they are smart, which is to be determined, this would be the best way to go. Linebacker D.J. Williams led the team with 6 sacks. There is definitely room to improve.

3rd Pick Bills - OL -- Derrek Sherrod -- 6'6", 310 LBS: The Bills could go several different ways with the pick here, but the smartest thing to do would be getting Ryan Fitzpatrick a bit more protection. They have some offensive weapons and if Fitz has enough time to get the ball to them... on top of beefing it up for the run game, then the Bills could be on their way to improving in a very tough division.

4rd Pick Bengals - WR -- A.J. Green -- Georgia -- 6'4", 205 LBS: With Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco potentially moving on, the Bengals will be running a skeleton crew at this position. Even if T.O. moves on, they still can afford to get better there. If Jonathon Joesph leaves, it is also possible that the Bengals target a defensive back with this pick.

5th Pick Cardinals - QB -- Ryan Mallett -- Arkansas -- 6'6", 240 LBS: Coach Whisenhunt seems to like the larger sized quarterbacks. Just a couple of years ago the Cards had one of the best pass-protecting lines in the NFL. Not too many pieces have changed. When Kurt Warner was with the team, he was not the most mobile of quarterbacks. Mallett falls in to the category of a non-mobile quarterback but has a rifle of an arm. All any quarterback has to do in Arizona is just get in the general area of Fitzgerald's hands and they should be good.

6th Pick Browns - ILB -- Greg Jones -- Michigan State -- 6'2", 241 LBS: Last year the Browns did very good at drafting some potential star talent for their secondary. I believe that it will be Mike Holmgren's desire to get better at the linebacker position this year. While they desperately need help in the department of receiving, they can get help in the second and third rounds... possibly even free agency. The ground game is already solid with Hillis running the rock. Jones would be a great addition to an evolving defense. Jones is already used to playing in cold weather, so he won't have to make too much adjustment in Cleveland.

7th Pick 49ers - CB -- Patrick Peterson -- LSU -- 6'1", 211 LBS: There is no question in my mind that the 49ers would jump at the opportunity to grab Peterson at number seven should he be there. There is an instant need for help in the 49ers secondary. If you watched even one game last year, you'd know this to be true. Peterson has all the tools to be one of the best in the league.

8th Pick Titans - OLB -- Von Miller -- Texas A&M -- 6'2", 245 LBS: The Titans were literally running dry at the linebacker position. The secondary was banged up all year due to the lack of competence there. Miller would fit very well in what the Titans do. It is very possible that they could go with a wide receiver here, or something to help the offense, but Miller is very good and fills a crucial need for Tennessee.

9th Pick Cowboys - CB -- Prince Amukamara -- Nebraska -- 6'1", 203 LBS: Let's face it, Terrance Newman is not exactly number one cornerback material. He serves as a very good and solid number two. Amukamara could possibly step up and meet the challenge of being a number one rated corner for the Cowboys. Their secondary could definitely use a face-lift.

10th Pick Redskins - SS -- DeAndre McDaniel -- Clemson -- 6'1", 210 LBS: With LaRon Landry on the other side, this pick here would give the Redskins one of the better safety tandems in the league. The Redskins got beat a bunch on big plays down the field and will need a ball hawk like McDaniel back there to keep the opposition honest.

11th Pick Texans - C -- Stefen Wisniewski -- Penn State -- 6'3", 305 LBS: The Texans ran flat at times on offense last year. They seemed to be stuck in 2nd gear in spurts last season. They need help big time on their interior line. A good center is the leader of the offensive line. It would be ill advised to go in any other direction for the Texans as they are much stronger in all other areas. This should be priority numero uno.

12th Pick Vikings - QB -- Cam Newton -- Auburn -- 6'6", 248 LBS: Brett Favre is gone, Adrian Peterson is still there, the defense is pretty solid minus possibly a safety... Cam Newton makes sense here. He is a duel threat and a beast at the goaline. With Peterson and Newton in at the same time in the redzone, it will be very hard to defend against. Newton has a big arm to get it down field to the big play receivers in Sidney RicePercy Harvin, and Bernard Berrian. There are endless possibilities on offense should the Vikings go with Newton.

13th Pick Lions - 43DE -- Da'Quan Bowers -- Clemson -- 6'4", 271 LBS: If Bowers is here, he could ultimately be a addition to help on that defensive line. He was the Nations leader with 15 sacks. If he could replicate what he has done in college in the pro's, the Lions will be stacked with one of the best defensive lines in the National Football League.

14th Pick Rams - WR -- Julio Jones -- Alabama -- 6'4", 210 LBS: Jones could be the missing link to an up and coming very talented football team. There are several receivers on the team now on the brink of breaking loose and emerging as threats to the opposition. With the addition of Jones, Bradford will have multiple options as he goes through his reads. Should they draft Jones here, this could be the makings of this decades next super tandem ala Manning/ Harrison, Montana/ Rice... well maybe not that good, but pretty good.

15th Pick Dolphins - 34DE -- Stephen Paea -- Oregon State -- 6'1", 315 LBS: The Dolphins lack a strong force in the middle of their defensive line. Although they may be looking for a quarterback, there really isn't many options. This is the safest pick for the Dolphins. They have their linebackers and they seem to have their secondary. Now it's time to focus on getting some push on that Dline.

16th Pick Jaguars - 43DE -- Adrian Clayborn -- Iowa -- 6'3", 285 LBS: The Jags lack any sort of force or outside rush from either defensive end. With Jack Del Rio, a defensive minded coach running the show, it seems appropriate that he would help out last years draft pick Alualu in drafting Clayborn. Clayborn has been a menace throughout his entire college career and should do just that as a pro as well.

17th Pick Patriots - 34DE -- Cameron Heyward -- Ohio State -- 6'5", 290 LBS: Big Daddy Wolfork is getting too old to do things by himself. He is going to need some help next year assuming he returns. Heyward has had a dominant college career. He could be an elite at his position. Specifically because Belichick is a master at coaching his guys up. Heyward just seems like a Belichick sort of guy and would be a good fit.

18th Pick Chargers - S -- Rahim Moore -- UCLA -- 6'1", 200 LBS: Moore has been one of the most talented players at his respective position. The Chargers are set at cornerback, but could use an upgrade on the back end of the secondary. He had 10 interceptions his sophomore year but only 1 pick this year. It was in large part to teams throwing away from him. Pro scouts, particularly the ones in the southern California have not forgot about the talent and presence that this kid brings each and every game. He finished the year with 77 tackles. It may be a bit of a reach considering the drop off in INT's, but it will be a pick well spent in an area that the Chargers need.

19th Pick Giants - RB -- Mark Ingram -- Alabama -- 5'10", 215 LBS: This could be the closest thing the NFC East has seen to an Emmitt Smith type player in a long time. This is one of those best player available meets a need type of situations should Ingram fall here. I imagine he will be one of the players invited to the green room during the draft, but he may be waiting there for while considering that most teams are now looking for running backs in later rounds nowadays.

20th Pick Bucs - WR -- Jonathan Baldwin -- Pittsburgh -- 6'5", 225 LBS: The Bucs lucked out in grabbing Mike WIlliams... he has been a pleasant surprise for them. However, they lack a solid second receiver. Of course there is always free agency, but when you are that young, it is wise to continue to try and get guys through the draft. The Bucs, and Josh Freeman would love to have a potentially great receiver like Blackmon.

21st Pick Chiefs - ILB -- Akeem Ayers -- UCLA -- 6'4", 255 LBS: Vrabel will not be around much longer. Ayers could start imediately and give the Chiefs the pass rusher they have lacked since the late great Derrick Thomas. Ayers is a guy who posses lightning fast speed for his position and a nice set of skills to get by would-be blockers. This would be an ideal selection should Ayers fall in to the Chiefs lap here.

22nd Pick Eagles - CB -- Brandon Harris -- Miami -- 5'11", 195 LBS: The Eagles got torched by Aaron Rodgers. One side of the field seemed to be secure and the other not as much. Harris would be a steal at the 22nd pick and the Eagles could certainly use it. Even though a lot of the blame was put on Michael Vick for the loss, the Eagles defense did give up 3 touchdowns in the air.

23rd Pick Colts - OT - DeMarcus Love -- Arkansas -- 6'5", 315 LBS: Love protected Ryan Mallett's hind parts all year long. He helped a not-so-mobile quarterback launch his draft stock a bunch higher than it should be. With that said, Love could wind up being the guy to protect Peyton Manning for the remainder of his career. This is more need than it is BPA, but it would work for the Colts who have done very well at drafting in recent history.

24th Pick Saints - 43DT - Marcell Dareus -- Alabama -- 6'3", 306 LBS: The biggest knock on Dareus, which is a big one, is that he had tendencies to take plays off throughout the year when he was in the game. Sean Payton is a big-time motivator. If he can't get this kid kick started, then nobody can. Dareus would be a nice replacement for the right defensive tackle Remi Ayodele who struggled quite a bit through the course of the season. He didn't manage many tackles, sacks, or just presence in general. Dareus would be an upgrade on downs when he decided to play.

25th Pick Seahawks - QB - Jake Locker -- Washington -- 6'3", 225 LBS: Locker will not start immediately but Pete Carroll knows all about Locker and could cultivate him in to a starter while he sits behind Hasselbeck for a year. Locker would be the next in line to keep that Brett Favre tree alive. Hasselbeck is oft injured, so Locker could see action here and there through the course of the season. Which in a sense would be good for him to get his feet wet like that and not be given too much too fast.

26th Pick Ravens - OLB - Ryan Kerrigan -- Perdue -- 6'4", 263 LBS: (Commentary coming later)

27th Pick Falcons - TE - D.J.  Williams -- Arkansas -- 6'2", 250 LBS: (Commentary coming later)

28th Pick Patriots - WR - Torrey Smith -- Maryland -- 6'1", 205 LBS: (Commentary coming later)

...the rest will come as the playoffs progress and more teams are knocked out.

Don't forget to rec the post.

Note: Smileyman is working on a mock draft as well that will be coming soon...

I just remember the Texas kid

I wasn’t that impressed with his college highlights, he had a bad knee than unfortunately might have ended his career with a car accident in camp.

I’m pretty sure you’re referring to the safety from LSU who was drafted by the Giants I believe. He’s damn lucky to still have a leg. And it was a good pick by them, just sort of unfortunate

Draft

So, yeah, if Peterson fell to us that would be awesome! Or go pass rush if there’s a sure-fire monster sitting there and a shut down CB isn’t.

If Harbaugh wants to totally blow our mind he could pick Cam Newton here. I don’t want him too, unless he does . . . I trust he knows . . .

hell no we'll be taking a cornerback for sure in the first round..

AND Pat Devlin in the second round ..after that..couple more DTs and CBs and maybe a ILB and if possible, another WR to develop on.

He's there now

but I think the EW shrine game and people looking heavily at film will bring him up some. I agree that right now I’d mark him for 3rd but I’m not getting too chummy with my two pick just in case ;-)

EW allows Juniors Senior Bowl (hence the name) does not

the Senior Bowl is a bit more highly regarded but the EW should not be ignored. Then there is the game (Is it called Texas versus the Nation or something like that) that showcases some lesser knowns.

My Dream Draft

Round 1: Peterson or Amukumara – The Niners need a DB like desperately. If the niners can pick up Joseph in FA then this secondary gets an Immediate boost.

Round 2: Either an OLB or QB : Jeremy Beal to me can be a great OLB but there is a pick later on that I will like at OLB. Ponder? Locker? Devlin ( Doubt he declares )

Round 3: Demarco Murray RB – Fast and good reciever.

Round 4: Casey Mathews – I would like him to play OLB guy is a Mathews so we know he has pass rush in him.

Round 5: DeAndre Jordan – 6’6 WR big target. We need one.

Round 6: Havalli from USC

Round 7: Not sure

Trade what?

Trade a 7th round for him? If he is of value to us I gather he’ll be of value to them and worth more than a late 7th rounder.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 16, 2011 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

They drafted him in the 4th and he's thrown 140 passes in 3 years

and Tampa has Josh Freeman.

Hard to think he’s got much value. The only real interesting thing is that Harbaugh coached him at San Diego.

I just personally doubt they let him go for a 7th.

He would be a targetted pick by us. Hill was let go to clear the field(wrongly yes but that was the most probable reason) so that was more of a “Hey you want him?” “Yeah we’ll give ya a 7th, sound good?” “Yeah” kinda deal. Versus a Joshy move which would be a Tampa saying “Yeah I know you want it baby..c’mon show me what you got” kind of move. LOL

Matthews won’t slip past the 3rd at the worst. I think he will do well at the combine and raise his stock. I would love for him to tank the combine and the 49ers get him in the 4th, but I don’t see it happening. Casey is a 3 year starter at Oregon, while big brother Clay only had 1 year of starting experience.

Out of those top 14… that’s what I’d say. Too bad Minnifield is going back to Virginia. Really liked him as a prospect. Maybe next year. But I have a feeling his stock is going to be much higher after next season.

C'mon Drew

I don’t doubt you have your reasons, it would just be nice if you provided more than just that.

Yes, he got burned by Blackmon, but who didn’t this year. His front seven was more than solid all year, which could have been to his benefit.

But give us more than “Spotty game” You are the draft guy on the site. There are a lot of people that like Prince, give us constructive reasons why we should be weary.

by VigilanteSteve on Jan 17, 2011 9:02 AM PST up reply actions

No.

If you go back and look at that entire game, its going to be the closest thing to the Pro’s that he would have faced. Honestly, I think Blackmon will be good in the NFL, but he wont be a star. Now with that said, Amukamara before that, did not face too many WR’s of that caliber. He is not a lock down corner. He will be a decent 2nd I believe, but I would not touch him in the 1st because of that.

Specifically, when he is playing anymore than 5 yards away from the guy, he is easily fooled. He turns his hips great and all that, but when a guy throws a double-step at him, he gets lost quick. He has adequate recovery speed and he is decent against the run, but even in the run, I have seen some whiffs from time to time. So basically he is a good option if you play a bunch of bump and run. Dunno, just after looking a bit deeper, I cannot say I would be thrilled or disappointed. To me, it would be a “blah” pick if we get him in the 1st.

That helps the people who might like Prince, but not know the flaws in his game and why you have your reservations about him. I still want to see what he does in the combine before making the decision to pass. I don’t put that much weight on the combine numbers, but it would be nice to see where he stands compared the the guys we could nab in the second round.

I watched his highlights from the OK State game and Texas '09 game.

He looks like 2 different players. In the Texas game, he was all over the WR, even if they made the catch. Other times he was all over them and made McCoy look elsewhere. Teams eveluate him on him ability and potential. I like him and would not think that it would be a bad move if he was drafted by the 49ers in the first round. He looked WAY better than Clements does in coverage. It’s not even close.

Why is Dowling undraftable (just getting more info on him)?

Draft Nick Fairley

by REDANDGOLD8 on Jan 17, 2011 2:09 AM PST up reply actions

I just have doubts about guys when they sustain injuries like that.

Sometimes guys recover, sometimes they don’t. Draft picks are valuable though and should be used sparingly. If there is someone there that isn’t too far off from how Dowling played when healthy, then you get the healthy guy. Just my opinion anyway.

But here’s my theory… The 49ers are probably going to spend a max of 2 picks on CB’s. Do you really wanna shake the dice on a guy who may not ever recover?

I thought about this more last year when I was advocating a pick on Walt Thurmand III. He did pretty decent for the Seahawks as a back up, but before the injury, people were talking about him like he was the next Deion Sanders.

Prince Amukamara

The NFL Prince reminds me most of is Nate Clements. IMO he is a very good college CB, good tackling, good run support, but lacks the elite speed necessary for the NFL. I don’t think he has much ceiling left for the NFL. On the other hand Peterson has it and will continue to develop. The Draftable list should get more clarity when the combines are completed. I’m curious what Prince will run.

I'm not going to lie, I know very little about NCAA Football.

I don’t watch college football, so I rely on the opinions of people who do, namely Drew K. I don’t agree with all that he says, but he seems to know what’s up, and has stated that he would prefer Jimmy Smith or Brandon Harris over Prince Amukamara.

It was rash, and quite honestly wrong, of me to say that Prince is not the number two guy without the ability to back-up that claim. I won’t be upset if we get Prince, I’d just prefer Peterson, or trading down and picking up Smith or Harris.

rlott#42 said he'd be good

I’m not sure where the Clements comparisons are coming from. Nate Clements wishes he had the footwork of Prince.

It's Whore-baugh, remember?

by bignerd on Jan 19, 2011 1:49 PM PST up reply actions

Someone said that when I said he's good in bump and run

but when he plays off a receiver, he is easily juked. I elaborated though and said he has great recovery speed. Whoever it was equated that to him being Nate Clements.

There is flaw in his game. But the same could be said about anyone entering the draft. The pro skill-set is different from the college skill-set… at least to be successful.

I don’t think he is going to be bad, but I don’ t think he’ll be a number one corner on the team he is drafted to based off of what I have seen in his play at Nebraska. I am a Big 12 fan, so I have had my on Prince for a couple years now. He has got torched by some receivers who are A) Not even in the pro’s… or B) Are average as a pro now… or C) Will most likely be average in the NFL.

Both Ryan Broyles (OU) and Justin Blackmon (OSU) torched Prince this year.

All his pass deflections came against weaker competition and he wound up with zero interceptions for 2010. He had 5 interceptions LAST YEAR, and has not done much else in his career.

He is solid against the run too… Although I dont completely agree with the Clements comparison, I do see why whoever it was would draw the conclusion.

Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result. -Lombardi

by Drew Kerr on Jan 19, 2011 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

That was me.

I called him Nate Clements 2.0 and have been for a while.

I just think their game is VERY similar. Neither has great speed, both are good in bump and run, both need to cheat on routes to get to the ball because of the lack of speed, both get beat in double moves, both are good tacklers and help in the run game, etc…I think Prince is a younger version of Nate Clements back when Nate had better speed. The problem is, when it’s not elite speed, it fades very quickly and you go from being fast enough, to not being fast at all when you lose just a bit of the speed. Whereas guys like DeSean will always be considered “fast” with top speed. Ginn, same thing, etc…Deion always had elite speed. The second Prince loses a little of that quickness either through age, or injury, he will not be a good #1 lock down Corner.

I think they are VERY similar DBs to each other.

by hudd07 on Jan 19, 2011 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

Solid against the run is not a knock

and I’m not standing up for Prince (though I like him) as much as we have to remember that even though yes this is a passing league at this time…teams do run. Oh he’s a guy who’s got some prospect and oh he’s good in run support, should not bring about negatives for his run support. What are his coverage abilities? Just because he is good in run support does not mean he is bad in coverage. (Not discounting Drew’s points re:coverage). It’s not quite as black and white as an either/or situation.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 19, 2011 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

Right...and I am not saying he CAN'T be good. I don't want anyone to draw that misconception.

I’m just putting out a “buyer beware” alert. I would put Amukamra in the same category as a Brandon Burton. Because of the hype, incredible front 7, among other things, he is being conceived as a top 10 talent… I don’t think he is as I alluded to above. I think without those things on an island by himself, he is very exploitable. It can be fixed, but to me, he is more of a project.

But I could be wrong. Joe Haden got his butt in camp, worked his tail off and will continue to do so. He’s going to be more than what I thought he would be.

Footwork?

You think he had good footwork against Blackmon? I know it was just one game, but he was all over the place and had a hard time finding and tracking the ball. He didn’t look anything like elite in that video.

I get it, some WRs can beat you, sometimes you look silly, but he got murdered that game. #7 Dbs don’t get beat like that in College. I’ll pass on him. I’d rather reach for Locker, or take a risk with Quinn than Prince.

Deion ran a 4.1 in the 40

If Prince get’s even close to that I will be glad to take him at 7.

Problem is, on top of getting man handled in college, he will run a 4.5 probably at best and with the 7th pick I’d rather reach for Locker, or take a chance on Quinn. If I’m grabbing the second best DB in the draft, he is going to be fast.

As Ricky Bobby once said “I just wanna go fast”

by hudd07 on Jan 19, 2011 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

I’m just throwing cold water on the notion that good DBs don’t get burned in college. If he runs a 4.2 like Deion I’d be ultra excited about the pick to.

Right now the CB position is the fall back option. I’m convinced Locker is worth the shot at #7 with Harbaugh on staff to develop him. I’d like to look at the OLB options next cause again the position has more impact than CB. If any of them look worthy than I’ll take them over a CB. If neither are left/worthy and Prince is left on the board I’d be content with the pick.

It's Whore-baugh, remember?

Crabtree

I don’t like him either—on the field or off the field. I’d like to see Balkke-Harbaugh trade him for a first round pick this year and maybe something else next year. With the first we could maybe pick up J Jones WR from Alabama or sign FA V Jackson from the Chargers and draft more DBs, maybe a good ballhawking FS llke Karim Moore from UCLA. I just can’t see Crabtree being successful in Harbaugh’s very complicated offense with very precise pass routes and lots of timing throws. That’s not Crabtree’s strength, to say the least.

Devine? Really?

See I think (and maybe I’m being cheap) but the COP RB need is not large enough to warrant him. I’m looking at a few other options: A) Derrick Locke – A bit bigger and just a step slower B) Brandon Saine – a big boy with some speed and outside run ability C) (Knows I’m gonna get crap for this) Ahmad Bradshaw – FA and as with a lot of teams, Giants have a lot of needs and can’t fill every one.

Not disagreeing with you...just weighing team needs

It is not a top need …and well…let’s remember that though Barry is great (I loved watching him in the day) his teams never went anywhere. I’m seeing a 4th about as high as we’d be willing to go for a RB. CB and QB have to be in the top 2-3 picks and then we really want to look for a rush LB, I am seriously thinking about Ahmad now because he would give us a young COP back that’s proven and would not cost a pick.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 17, 2011 7:39 AM PST up reply actions

Barry

Had he been on the Cowboys, imagine where they would’ve been. And where he would have been.

You cannot blame the lack of team accomplishments on Barry. Not sure why you even mention that. You put ’90s Barry on the 2011 Niners, and do you honestly think that would be a bad thing?

Devine, if he’s there in the 3rd, would be well worth it IMO. A steal. Defensive linemen and LB’s cannot even see him shooting out of the backfield until it’s too late.

Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result. -Lombardi

by Drew Kerr on Jan 17, 2011 11:42 AM PST up reply actions

Yes it would be a bad thing...

warranting who we have at QB. My point is/was that Detroit did him a huge disservice to him by not giving him a good supporting crew. I do have a good bit of faith in our OLine so that would change things a bit. But RB is not something I personally want to put a high pick on. And honestly Id rather have Stiller or Best than Devine.

I'm ok with either

Let’s just not throw out one of the name of one of the greatest RB’s in history here. Barry had some thighs and cut on a dime, a lot of Devine’s highlights are speed, not really making the moves Barry did. He looks a LOT more like Sproles. Look at his Junior highlights. Aside from Drew’s freshman like, and someone saying he looked like Barry, you wouldn’t think it with your own two eyes.

Bull

Go back and look at ALL of his highlights. The kid makes insane cuts. Stops on a dime… all that. Not sure where you get that he is “just speed”. In fact, speed is not his game… he often gets caught from behind like Barry did from time to time.

I'm not sayin he WILL be the next Barry.

And nobody will be for that matter, with maybe the exception of Barry Sanders Jr. But the fact of the matter is that no one will ever BE Barry Sanders. When I make the comparison, I make it based on the similarities. Devine cuts and moves again just like that.

Marecic and Harbaugh and Bay Area possibilities

Agree with drafting Marecic. One huge plus is that Owen already knows the offense, the blocking schemes, pass routes, etc. So the usual time it takes to learn a new system is not there. Another plus, he already knows Harbaugh, and Harbaugh totally loves him and the way he plays football. He can immediately contribute as a FB, and as a ST player who can take on blocks and tackle really well. 4th round sounds about right depending on his 40 times.
Sione Fua is another Stanford player who fits well with 49ers needs at NT and DE in the 3-4. It is generally agreed than Fua was Stanford’s best defensive player, though his stats were not great from the NT position. He will probably need some time to mature, so getting or retaining a good, veteran NT [Ngata or Franklin] seems essential. Ryan Whalen could be a FA signing. Good route runner, strong hands, knows the offense.
I don’t know Cal football well, but Cameron Jordan seems like a strong player who will be gone by the second round. Shane Vereen could be a decent change of pace RB. I don’t think Dixon is long for the NFL, good effort, poor speed, and doesn’t add much to Gore. Mike Mohamed could be a good late round pick-up. Any other possibilities?

Up until about 5 minutes ago I was sure that Prince would be a solid option for us at #7. Granted, his ‘09 tape doesn’t look amazing but has played almost lights out this year. He hasn’t put up great numbers but QB’s aren’t throwing in his direction. He also plays with more physicality than what I’ve seen from Peterson primarily in run support.

I love the idea of getting Patrick Peterson but was just curious about what turned you off with Prince Amukamara.

Well This draft looks pretty darn good

Really can’t question many of those picks. Well, except Locker over Mallett. Although i agree Locker is the best prospect, Mallett will go before him

Mila "Sweet Lips" Kunis, as stated by Scarlett Johansson. I couldn't agree more. Reverse would be true too!!!!

Locker is a better fit than Mallett in Washington.

I actually like Mallett over Locker but no player is greater than the team.

personally, i think the Bills are most likely to take a pass rusher.

they have nothing at OLB and there should be some intriguing prospects available at that spot.

specifically Robert Quinn, and maybe Aldon Smith if he continues to fly up draft boards.

He knows how to read now. He lost weight now and is 320 was 340 last year. Seems pretty good still. Would love to have him at NT. He is 23 and NT last until what 34-36? Even if we give him some time on the bench he will still be a good NT for years to come.

Depends who you put in their places.

How do you misuse a 3-4 OLB? He rushes the passer plenty… he just rarely gets there.

Believe me, I’m a Lawson fanboy. I just think he’s a misfit in our system and is not an outstanding rusher. Whether or not he can be is up for debate.

Is it draft day yet?

by See Jay on Jan 18, 2011 5:19 AM PST up reply actions

Really? Do you remember the stunt up the middle on Orton? The defense didn’t run that play again. You line him up to rush the passer or cover the TE. We used very little zone blitzing and cb bites and his height and speed could cover a void. If you think an Olb has two jobs that’s ridiculous. With a pass rushed opposite him, he’d be great. Only the Steelers have two great PR olbs. Lawson used one type of pass rush, to the outside, and that’s a bad scheme.

NT Phil Taylor, Baylor
DE Mike Blanc, Auburn
WR Terrence Toliver, LSU
G John Moffitt, Wisconsin
QB Scott Tolzien, Wisconsin
OLB Greg Romeus, Pittsburgh

Can't believe I forgot someone

Brandyn Thompson from Boise State

I’m still pretty shocked he’s not being considered at least a 4th round talent. This kid has been locking down WR’s and getting INTs since his true freshman year. I almost forgot he was eligible for the draft since he’s getting ZERO hype.

I’d love Thompson in the last couple of rounds as a nickel corner.

Ok offseason dream

FA
restructure Clements contract
Clements is overpaid. He is an above average corner but isn’t a shutdown corner. Him and a lockdown CB will be a great duo.

Sign Tamba Hali
Although it may seem that he is having a one year wonder Tamba Hali has been averaging more than 8 sacks a year. This is including the year where he had 3 sacks. When was the last time we had a guy that had 8 sacks?

Sign Pat Williams (optional)
Dude is a run stuffer at heart. If we could get a guy that could collapse the pocket from the middle the passing game and run game will be shut down.

Draft
1. Patrick Peterson CB LSU
I don’t really need to get into why I want him.

2. Jerrell Powe NT Ole Miss
6-2 320 and he lost weight this year. The guy is built to be a NT. Franklin isn’t going to be playing with us for much longer and who knows how good RJF is.

3. Casey Matthews OLB Oregon
I love Oregon players mostly because they play so fast. Casey will be a decent OLB. He may not be as good as his brother but if he is 3/4ths as good as him it will be a steal.

4. Noel Devine RB West Virgina University
Although I personally don’t like drafting a RB we need a COP back.

4. Owen Marecic FB Stanford
Smart player and great hands. He seems like a decent WCO FB. Yes, I finally looked up and read up on WCO took me a day but I think I finally understand has an indepth conversation about it.

5. Alex Henery K Nebraska
What a leg and more importantly what an accurate leg. He only missed one FG this year. Which was a 53 yarder and blocked. He is also a punter so if Andy Lee gets injured (God forbid) he can be the backup punter. If you clicked the link you saw that he kicked a 57 yarder with no wind. Nedney is injured every year and I’m tired of having an annual search for a kicker.

6. Clay Nurse DE/OLB Illinois
This is pending the combine/proday. If he can show that he is athletic enough to play OLB then he would be perfect. He is 6-3 260. He has some stamina issues since I do not see him playing every play. he plays DE right now so his coverage will be lacking a little. Since a 6th round pick isn’t expected to start right away he could always learn how to cover while he plays ST for a little bit. I know I say that I hate throwing random players to play ST just to play it but he has to get some experience somewhere.

6. Chase Beeler C Stanford
I don’t know why people don’t have him ranked higher? He seems light though weighing 270 lbs. Since the 3-4 Defense is the new fad in the NFL it seems vital for the Center to be strong enough to take on the NT.

The 7th round is up for grabs. Just grab people that are really athletic.

Alex didn’t bust because he has no talent. He busted because he was horribly managed. We think we have excellent QB development skills now… if it was 2005 with this coaching staff, Alex Smith would look like a dandy pick and he might actually become something more than a pariah.

i disagree. i still think he busted mostly because he didn’t have the natural intangibles to be a franchise QB in the NFL.

if he gets drafted into a better situation then maybe he works out better than he did, but i don’t think there’s a scenario where Alex Smith lives up to a 1st overall pick.

In a great situation, he always could have been great. I don’t think it’s a knock on him to say that he couldn’t overcome the serious adversity he’s faced in his NFL career. I still think he will land somewhere (I’d say Miami except for Nolan) and silence his naysayers.

I never said that neither would or could amount to anything. What I said was that this isn’t the year to draft 2 QB’s, especially not in the first three rounds.

If you were talking about taking a flyer in the 6th/7th round on a Nate Davis kind of prospect, then OK. You’re basically investing your entire draft in the QB position. This isn’t a good QB class at the top of the draft as even you admitted recently.

Also with Frank coming off a serious injury

I’d hesitate to hang the hopes of the team on him until he shows he’s fully recovered and can carry the load again. RB is not a huge need but I definitely want one in the 5th or earlier.

My current vote is going for...

Derrick Locke. Probably 4-6th rounder. 5’9" 192 lbs. 4.36 40. From KY or to pick up Ahmad Bradshaw in FA, he’ll be 24 yrs old.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 18, 2011 3:13 PM PST up reply actions

Dunno but looking at him drag up to 8 guys seems kind of appealing at any level.

And then breaking away from 2 man tackles. Had some nice moves too.

Michael Turner came from there.

Chargers saw value… and I actually like this guy better than Turner. Turner was a 5th rounder. You can’t always use the “lessor competition” argument. Sometimes you just have to look at the player and his ability.

Spann is a good find. I wonder what Iupati would think of him.

His running style somehow reminds me of LaGarrette Blount—except that he’s a way smaller than Blount. He keeps a great pad level and breaks a surprising number of tackles for a guy his size and seems (at least in the video you linked) to always fall forward.

Props to York/Baalke for reeling in Harbaugh. Now everybody get back to work!

Offseason dream redrawn: I forgot a QB

FA
restructure Clements contract

6. Greg McElroy QB Alabama
Very intelligent. Has a decent release. Although he isn’t the greatest of athletes neither are many of the top QBs. Hasn’t been asked to carry the game a lot but when he has he has pulled through.

6. Chase Beeler C Stanford
I don’t know why people don’t have him ranked higher? He seems light though weighing 270 lbs. Since the 3-4 Defense is the new fad in the NFL it seems vital for the Center to be strong enough to take on the NT.

7. Clay Nurse OLB Illinois
Look at the first one.

Crabtree, Ginn, and Morgan are, while not superstars, all quality starters

Then you can have your pick of Ziegler or Williams. None of those guys are in dire need of replacement, particularly considering we have one superstar TE and one quite good TE.

Our receiving corps is quality for now…it makes more sense to focus on filling holes than upgrading positions of non-need.

Yes he is

As a #3 guy. He is no DeSean Jackson type of burner, but DeSean is a #1 guy. Ginn is a #2.

I think he is fine there, I think we need to upgrade our #1 WR and move Crabtree into the slot as #2. I would love a V Jax as #1. Ginn is totally fine at #3, with occasionally Morgan substituting in.

by hudd07 on Jan 18, 2011 4:20 PM PST up reply actions

i guess if you consider the #3 WR a starter, then fine.

by these3words on Jan 18, 2011 5:22 PM PST up reply actions

He isn't a top 2 WR now.

Ginn is a #3 WR with Crabtree #1 and Morgan #2.

So the role that he is playing right now, is just fine for him and he fits it perfectly. He is a quality #3 WR which is who he is. I’d love another #1 WR like an VJax or such, and bump Morgan but Ginn is quality in the role he is in right now.

Yeah nothing having to do with his size

He throws just like I used to throw a ball when I played shortstop.

It’s more of a windup so you can get some heat on the ball. He really cocks back. Once he decides to throw the ball, it takes him a couple seconds to get it out of his hands then he just fires it in there.

I watched him in the bowl game and granted I was flipping channels, but I didn’t see him one time use any touch on the ball. Everything was a rocket like he was throwing to the first basemans chest.

Involve All of SB Nation.

First time ever posting and I haven’t read all 400+ comments so forgive me. With that said once the official draft order is set why not involve all of the teams from SB Nation and create an “interactive” mock draft.

Admins could propose trades, create votes on which player to choose but ultimately the fans/members for each team website gets to make the final decision. I think it could be something new and fun. Also I get really tired of seeing a fan of one team try to mock every other teams picks when they really have no idea what any other team would pick besides their own.

Some people will hate the idea or just ignore it but I thought it was worth throwing out there if it is even possible.

Just me?

Is it just me or does anyone else see how signing him could change our draft in a large way? It would take away a huge pressure to draft a CB in the first round (and the top 2 could be gone before we pick! Altough if 1 was there I would still take him).
I know this is a draft post, but I would have thought his name would be all over since he would be a huge help to this team.

Picking up Asomugha would definitely open up an innovative approach to the draft

Problems are:

2.) He wants to go to an immediate contender.

May not be a CBA, so may be forced to draft first

So I still see us taking a CB fairly high, and if we do, then it will hurt Asomugha’s chances with us. However, if we somehow miss on a CB, we will put in a full court press on him.

I’m convinced he goes back to the Raiders. They are finally on the right track, and Davis has already shown he will over pay him. If not, I think the Niners are 2nd favorites IF we are even interested. I just think he wants to stay on the Best coast.

SBNation Mock Draft

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2011/1/18/1939164/2011-nfl-mock-draft-nick-fairley

has us taking Marcell Dareus. Amakamura still on the board and taken two down. So is Gabbert (just an aside). Locker doesn’t even go in the first round.

I just vomited in my mouth a little.

I would be sick to my stomach if we got Dareus. I have my serious doubts that Harbaugh would let Baalke draft him. Harbaugh may not have say-so in the 53… or the draft for that matter…. but he does have control of who plays and sits. I have a really tough time seeing that selection. It’s gonna be 1 of 3 things… QB, CB, or a trade back.

Harris goes to the SeaChickens. Jimmy Smith goes to the Patriots. Trade down and get one of those guys with like an extra second(?) and then go for Locker in the second or Devlin in the 3rd (or second)

DraftTek's draft as of the 18th

1 DE/OLB Rober Quinn
2 QB Jake Locker
3 CB Aaron Williams
4 WR Jerrell Jernigan
4 DT Sione Fua
5 RD Jeff Demps
6 DE Matt Conrath
6 FS Brett Greenwood
7 LOT D.J. Young
7 WR Greg Little

by HUNGRY HUNTER on Jan 19, 2011 2:29 AM PST up reply actions

i don't care very much how fast my OLBs are.

they are hardly ever running full speed during a game anyway.

it’s more about how explosive they are.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

more like the first two.

if you get any farther than that and still haven’t run into a blocker, then someone missed their block and you’re getting a free sack.

if you do run into a blocker (almost always the case), then your top speed is pretty much out the window. At that point it’s about your power and your moves to shed the block. It also helps if the guy trying to block you has a bad angle on you, which comes from your explosive first step.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

In a 3-4, THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAIT is the ability to rush the passer. Coverage skills are a plus, but containing the edge in the run game and pass rush ability are 31 and #2 priorities for a 3-4 OLB.

by BustaTheRippa on Jan 19, 2011 5:38 PM PST up reply actions

depends on the scheme

in the 49ers scheme Lawson was used in coverage as much as he was rushed

by smileyman on Jan 19, 2011 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

That’s because Manusky ran the 3-4 ass backwards in the Nolan mold. He seemed to think dropping linebackers into coverage and playing pussyball was the right way to go.

Look at teams like Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New England, the Jets, and Green bay. They all run 3-4’s that ATTACK. they all have premiere pass rushers(except NE) who can get to the quarterback. They blitz a ton and this why their the best 3-4’s in the game.

Vic Fangio is a Dom Capers diciple so he is NOT in the Mike Nolan mode of pussyball. He will want rushers, and he is going to attack and pressure the offense. This is why I strongly believe Manny Lawson will not be a 49er next season.

by BustaTheRippa on Jan 19, 2011 6:09 PM PST up reply actions

Eh

49ers almost always rushed one of their LBers too. It just wasn’t Lawson. Mostly it was LaBoy or Brooks or whoever was on the opposite side of Lawson.

by smileyman on Jan 19, 2011 9:01 PM PST up reply actions

Not as much as Manusky should have, although to be fair, Manusky didn’t have the personnel to rush. This is why Manny needs to be let go, and we need to find a rusher in rounds 1 or 2

by BustaTheRippa on Jan 19, 2011 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

easier to play an attacking 3-4 when you've got the personnel

NE isn’t an attacking 3-4—they’re actually more similar to the Niners’ scheme.

Props to York/Baalke for reeling in Harbaugh. Now everybody get back to work!

conflicting reports on how Pat Devlin did in Shrine Game practice.

this one says he did good: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/story/14568368/nc-dt-austin-delaware-qb-devlin-shine-at-shrine-practice

this one says otherwise: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/EastWest-Shrine-practice-review-Day-2.html

they both mention a cornerback named Justin Rogers playing well. Anyone know anything about him?

both articles said he was throwing strikes though….The 2nd article is right in that it will take time for Devlin to get comfortable under center.

by BustaTheRippa on Jan 19, 2011 5:25 PM PST up reply actions

I don't like any of the 1st round projected QB's

Gabbert- Alex Smith jr. Great arm, 2 cent head, pretty inaccurate even on intermediate throws. Have no idea why this guy has 1st round hype.

Locker- All athlete. No instincts for the position. Reminds me of Drew Stanton.

Newton- Great arm, inconsistent accuracy. He’s intriguing with his athleticism and poise, but he’s not a 1st round grade.

Mallet- I actually like him, just not sure if he’s a fit with Harbaugh. He’s going to need to be in a system that runs the ball heavily and use a lot of max protection passing plays. I think he’s a 1st rounder, just not sure of #7 overall.

Our best bet is going with a corner or pass rusher in the 1st( Amukamara or Robert Quinn) and then taking a Stanzi or Devlin in round 2.

by BustaTheRippa on Jan 19, 2011 6:21 PM PST reply actions

We're deep at safety...

Especially if clements (under a restructured contract) converts to safety. We’ll have a healthy C. Taylor, a much improved Reggie Smith, all of which can play if DOGO’s price is too steep. I vote for T Mays to convert to OLB. He has the tools to be better than Julian Peterson. He’s faster than every TE in the league (an argument can be made for VD), is stout enough a tackler to handle the run, and versatile enough to be a beast in disguised pass rush packages. Not to mention, he’d be do well in Nickel packages spying the QB. This frees us up to go after Nhamdi, and to sign the best CB.D-lineman available. We now have a top 5 Defense!! Use a late round pick to trade for Josh Johnson, retain T.Smith, and package picks to go after luck next year. We still compete in the west this in 11’, and we’re not over invested in sub-par players (albeit draft choices or FA’s).

by gorgeousb82 on Jan 19, 2011 9:43 PM PST reply actions

Deep at safety?

Um I don’t know about that. Even with your plan, there’s neither quantity nor quality in our stable of safeties. By your count, we will only have three safeties on the team. Now that’s all good…if none of them get hurt. The problem is Curtis Taylor has a penchant for getting hurt, and thus hasn’t really had a chance to show us much. Reggie had a half year this year to start and in essence he would be a rookie because he would be starting SS and backing up FS at the same time. Now Clements, he’s our best DB, but he would still be transitioning from CB to FS. It should be fairly simple, but we still have only one player backing him up. So by your count we would only have three safeties and converting our player with arguably the most potential at safety into an OLB. We are anything BUT deep at the safety position. The only positions we’re deep at, are LB and probably TE. First time FS paired with a SS with little experience and both of them backed by only an extremely inexperienced Safety who has a knack for getting injured? That’s just tempting fate my friend.

Correct...

when only considering our current roster. This dream, was predicated upon the notion that we’d draft a top CB with our 1st rd pick, and pursue a veteran CB via FA. As is, you’re absolutely correct, our current secondary is slim with proven players.

Well...someone had to say it.
