Jim Harbaugh, 49ers Reportedly Hire John Morton, Ed Donatell
The 2011 San Francisco 49ers coaching staff is slowly beginning to fill out as Jim Harbaugh adds more and more names to the team. Late last week word came out that Ed Donatell would be brought in as secondary coach (thanks to the FanShots and FanPost about it). We have not received official word at this point, although during his Raiders introductory press conference, Hue Jackson actually confirmed the Donatell hiring. in his press conference as the new 49ers head coach I'm guessing he wanted to interview Donatell for his own staff and Donatell informed him that wouldn't be possible.
The latest addition is in the passing game as Coach Harbaugh has apparently added USC wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator John Morton (thanks for the FanShot on this earlier). USC coach Lane Kiffin confirmed that move. Coach Harbaugh has indicated that he would do a lot of the play calling but he went with a running game coordinator and a passing game coordinator at Stanford. Greg Roman was recently hired as offensive coordinator, so one has to wonder whether Morton will handle some sort of passing game coordinator role.
After the jump I've posted a breakdown of their various career stops.

Couple episodes she looked like a fox. Wasn’t good for the show when Alley started swelling and getting louder and she was supposed to be the hot one. So they dressed her like a mime.
Best show, I watch it all the time. Its very mellow
shes crazy.
And its awesome in so many ways.

I still can't hear the phrase "groin injury"
without thinking of the “rapping” Sam Malone, LOL.
Kristy Ally’s character may have been a wet towel but getting rid of Diane helped bring out the rest of the cast.
It's Whore-baugh, remember?
The Diane character was perfect. The problem was that the actress Shelly Long’s psychological problems were too much for the cast. She was fighting with everyone so a change had to be made. They wanted to promote Sam as the lead and give him another “will they or won’t they”. Kristy was horrible

I hope we aren't turning into the Raiders
We have been pretty secretive regarding our hires. Seems like most of the news regarding our coaching hires have been coming from other teams, instead of from us. I know we are trying to keep the position coaches secretive, until we finalize everything but wow, the Raiders, the most secretive team in the league, is releasing our news regarding coaches. Crazy.
Yeah but,
the raiders broke this news out of spite because we stole their guy, we probably didn’t send out a press release because it isn’t officially done yet.
At least that is my guess.
John Morton
His bio at USC says he was their offensive coordinator in 2009. It is interesting that we could get him for this position. Another great hire by Harb and company.
Obviously, i am most excited about the Donatell hire. He has had success as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, did a great job with the Broncos secondary in 2010. I am surprised that he wasn’t mentioned as a defensive coordinator this off-season. Maybe Champ Bailey will follow him here.

its seriously, a night and day difference on Offense. Our coaching staff was laughable last time this year.
And we all bought into it like chumps.

He was almost made his offensive coodinator at USC. Move to get more of an inside track on Pete Carrol’s offensive thinking?

i kind of figured Jim Harbaugh would be coordinating the passing game more than anyone.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
According to original reports
Before any assistants were hired Harbaugh was going to call plays and he was going to have a running game coordinator and passing game coordinator like he did at Stanford
yeah, but those reports also said
the two coordinators would be instead of having one OC, and then we hired Greg Roman as OC.
so those rumors don’t seem to have been true.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Can't argue with that
I just don’t know what the OC means in this case. It just doesn’t seem like he would give up all of the play calling but what do I know. They don’t even announce people being hired so who knows whats going to happen. I am just happy that someone says something so we know and that it seems like all the hires have been done so in a competent manner
Damn!

McDaniels traded Bradford to Cleveland for Senaca Wallace because he didn’t keep the elevator doors open while McDaniels was running down the hall. Watch out Steven Jackson…
yeah. i'm told McDaniels was hesitant about taking the job
because the Rams don’t have any elite WRs to trade away for no reason.

Which, is really never talked about and such a douche move! I mean any player that did that today…talk about bad publicity. And I think Madden should have a thing where you start off as a video guy or something and slowly move your way up the ladder till some team hires you as a coach. that would be rad.

Answer:
Because he is not a member of the NFLHCA (NFL Head Coaches Association), which licenses the game. Belichick is the only NFL head coach who has chosen not to join the association. This also applied to Bill Parcells when he was Dallas Cowboys head coach because his contract with ESPN prohibited it.
Same goes for MJ (NBAPA) and Barry Bonds when they were playing.
I guess because they aren’t/weren’t in the union they would have to get royalties.

Jordan’s case was very unusual. I think one of his outside avertisers from gaming, Nike maybe, restricted his image and likeness. As the most sought after athelete for advertisement and his price being more than a small countries GDP, he was near impossible to have in a game which at the time was very weak in income and recognition.
I think NBA All-stars 1990 on gameboy was the one that struck a deal with whichever ad agency and the NBA and lost more money than it made to have Jordan in it. Not Mike’s fault really

Seahawks hired Tom Cable as assistant head coach/offensive line coach and Todd Wash as defensive line coach,
well. good thing we are still arguably the most talented team in the division — albeit with no QB lol. i really expect us and the rams to duke it out the next few years. with respect to the cards and hawks, a lot hinges on what they do at QB – granted, that applies to us too — but i think we have more of the pieces now.

Breaking news?
The St. Louis Rams hired Josh McDaniels, fired as Broncos coach with four games to go in the regular season, as their offensive coordinator.
The team announced the hire on its Twitter feed, OneRamsWay, on Tuesday. McDaniels replaces Pat Shurmur, hired as Cleveland Browns head coach earlier this month.
Coach Steve Spagnuolo called McDaniel one of the top offensive minds in the NFL.
Y! Sports
It's good that the division is getting better
Thus, the more fun it will be when the Niners take the division! :)

I’m really happy about these signings! USC WR’s have been tops for a while. Snub to Big Al too! Did the Hawks sign Cable? McDaniels to the Rams? NFC West actually looks like it’s going to the Powerhouse of the Future. Hello AFC East!

That's at least a 50% upgrade in the DB corp
huh? I was just thinking how much just having him as DB Coach would upgrade our current corps and I think it’d be about that much. Not saying “Our guys are great just need some coaching” but I am saying some coaching can make them better.

Was listening to Hue Jackson on NFLN
and I think he put his foot in his mouth. Said there is no question that they will win the division and take their team to the playoffs. KC is getting better. Denver has Foxy now and he’ll upgrade that defense I feel. And then there’s the Chargers. I just don’t see it as a given.

They should have kept Cable.
Davis is too quick to cut bait these days.
Only 2 years and they most certainly were showing signs of real improvement from the ‘07-’08 Raiders.
2008 and 2009 they had the same record… but this year they went 8-8 and basically cleaned up in their division. They are a few pieces short like the 49ers from being a division contender.
I think they will do worse under Jackson
Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result. -Lombardi
What reasoning do you have for saying they will do worse?
Hue Jackson has a long resume of offensive coaching in the NFL and he has earned the opportunity to be a head coach. He improved the Raider offense from 31 to 10. I agree Cable did good things but I don’t think you can assume they will do worse with Jackson. I believe their offense will get better and they have a good young defense.

So let's see
We have Fangio as our DC – A coach with experience being a DC both in college and in the NFL
We have Solari and the new guy (can’t remember his name at the moment) coaching our OL (Is Ray Brown gonna be back in any capacity?)
We have the Triumvirate of Roman, Morton and Harbaugh running the offense. (With Harbaugh as Caesar)
We have Tomsula running our DLine
And we have the Smartest of the Ninja Turtles coaching our Defensive Backfield.
Did I miss anyone important? Not a bad coaching crew.
Much better than Foerster running the OL and Jimmy Raye running our offense and Vance Joseph running our DBs.

Is it possible
to go from having one of the worse coaching staffs in the NFL one year, to having one of the best the next year? I am not saying that is going to happen, but Harbaugh has really surrounded himself with elite assistant coaches. He is able to maintain the continuity that he had at Stanford, while adding experienced NFL coaches outside of the Stanford program. Additionally it appears he is going to keep the three assistant coaches that i wanted retained from the Singletary coaching staff. Pretty amazing stuff so far!

I know we have Rathman
But whats everyones take on Gene Huey from the colts. He coached some great RB’s
Edgerrin James, Marshall Faulk, Joseph Addai
2011 season can't come quick enough..
Well ive heard Morton is bring brought in as the Receivers coach
Maybe he can take Crabtree, Morgan & Ginn to the next level. But my question is who is being brought to coach the QB position and to a lesser extent the TE’s coach. I suppose if they can’t find one that Drevno can move over from Co- O-Line coach. My thought from the beginning was the Coach Harbaugh was going to be the de-facto QB coach and in a few years he would hire a full time replacement but who knows at this point.
Has anyone less noticed that the hiring have had a clear indication of what they are gonna run. All of the offensive hiring have been guys who are coaching veterans and have alot of experience in the WCO and all of the defensive coaches have alot of experience running the 3-4
Is anyone at least a little concerned about any of these hirings?
I’ve seen nothing but praise from everyone regarding the appointments thus far, and I’m not trying to be highly critical of them, but I think the number of colleges coaches we are going to have is, at the very least, worthy of a few raised eyebrows.
Look, I don’t want to be “that guy”, but we all know it’s a different world. Most of these guys, it seems, have varying degrees of experience in the NFL, but it’s worth pointing out if these coaches’ ultimate goal is to coach in the NFL then one would imagine you stay in the NFL as opposed to bouncing around in the college ranks, a head coaching job notwithstanding.
But it’s not their skill set that concerns me; I myself have indulged in the Harbaugh Kool-Aid multiple times, and I fully trust his ability to appoint the “right” people. But in this case, the “right people” are those that possess perhaps the knowledge to coach young players, but maybe not how to handle them.
Let’s face it: these are very wealthy young men, with large egos, that aren’t looking for a father figure. It’s different in college, obviously. The kids are right out of high school and still impressionable and controllable to a certain degree. Coupled with the fact that if they’re smart enough, they’ll listen and abide by the coaches wishes because their financial future depends on.
So, if you apply that theory in the NFL, you are going to garner a lot of resentment. Case in point: Mike Singletary. Oh sure, it worked when he got the job during the last few weeks in 2008 and I’ll even give him 2009, when we were expected to be improved but not serious contenders. But as soon as turmoil hit (Read: the losing streak to start the season) all hell broke loose.
I am not comparing Jim Harbaugh or any of the new assistants to Mike Singletary; it’s clear that they are leaps and bounds more apt to handle a professional football team than Mike was. Rather, I’m drawing the comparison in the state-of-mind of these coaches. As great as I envision the Jim Harbaugh era, there will be turmoil. The question is: Do you make players run windsprints until they puke and “rah-rah” them out of whatever situation it is, or do you continue to coach and let the players work it out like grown men?
The answer is obvious to everyone here. I just hope it is as evident to those we are trusting to turn our beloveded team around.
by JSing on Jan 19, 2011 1:11 AM PST via mobile reply actions
If you look at there careers
You’ll notice that they pretty much followed each other once they had coached together. It seems at least 2 of these guys (outside of morton who was with Harbaugh in Oakland) were on a team at any given time. I think sometimes its better to go make a name for yourself where you can succeed (even if thats college) than just take a job because its in the NFL. If you don’t have the talent to work with with in the NFL you could easily get stuck there or ruin your career because of your name getting lost in the mix of a horrible organization.
