2011 Senior Bowl Rosters, Coaches: Jake Locker Week Is Upon Us

Fooch's Update: For those wondering, Andy Dalton clocked in at 6'2 (as opposed to the 6'3 listed in your program).

This week is another key marker on the timeline for the 2011 NFL Draft. After we had the East-West Shrine Game this past weekend, we now move into practice week for the 2011 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. While the Shrine Game has scouts from all 32 teams in attendance, the Senior Bowl will see those scouts PLUS a large contingent of coaches and front office executives on hand for the festivities. Speaking of the Shrine Game, Drew will have a bit of a recap of that around noon today.

The Senior Bowl will kick off live on from Mobile, Alabama on NFL Network on Saturday January 29 at 1:00pm pacific. Given the rules on when players can declare for the NFL Draft, the Senior Bowl will generally include a sizable chunk of the top players for the upcoming draft. This year's Senior Bowl has a lot of great talent, but at the QB position this week of practice leading up to Saturday's game appears set to go down as "Jake Locker Week."

Christian Ponder, Andy DaltonRicky Stanzi, and Colin Kaepernick will all be in town, but Blaine Gabbert, Cameron Newton, and Ryan Mallett will all be sitting at home as underclassmen. Much like the Shrine Game, this week of practice leading up to the Senior Bowl is more important than the game itself. And for Jake Locker, it really is make or break time for him. He'll have plenty to show at the Combine and/or his private workout, but this week really could make or break his draft status. I'd imagine he's going to be drafted fairly high no matter what, but he has a chance to at least knock on the door of being the top QB selected.

More after the jump, but first, just a reminder that three guys you'll want to keep an eye on via Twitter are Todd McShay, Steve Muench, and Kevin Weidl. Rather than check each one out individually, ESPN has created a twitter list that includes all three scouts. It makes life much easier.

Scouts Inc took a look at some of the top storylines (Insider protected) heading into this week's practices. At the QB position, Locker is of course the most notable figure. However, there are a variety of storylines related to all the quarterbacks. The most interesting that I saw was this on TCU QB Andy Dalton:

We are eager to see TCU QB Andy Dalton at Monday's weigh-in at the convention center to see his actual height. Dalton is one of the more underrated quarterback prospects in the class and this is a good opportunity to show NFL teams that he is capable of scanning the field and making all the necessary throws from within the pocket.

For Bay Area college football fans, Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan will be in attendance this week. Jordan ranks 15th on Scouts Inc's Top 100 and appears to be an intriguing 3-4 defensive end option. He likely is in a bad position for the 49ers barring a trade down:

Cal's Cameron Jordan is an underrated five-technique prospect who needs to prove he's in the same class as some of the other first-round prospects in Mobile this week. Jordan is more active and productive than most 3-4 defensive ends, but he needs to show he can control the point of attack versus some of the top offensive tackles playing in this game.

I've posted the two rosters down below, but I wanted to point out some player in particular to watch. Scouts Inc posted their Five Players to Watch, and they were:

1. OLB Mark Herzlich, Boston College
2. DE/OLB Von Miller Texas A&M
3. WR Jerrel Jernigan, Troy Pulled out with injury
4. DE Stephen Paea, Oregon State
5. WR Greg Salas, Hawaii

The 49ers might not have interest in all these players, but they do have needs at some of those positions. As the week moves ahead we'll be attempting to provide similar coverage to what we had for the Shrine Game. Although given the caliber of some of the players involved this week, we'll try and get even more coverage out there for you.
