Official NFL Draft Thread: 1/24/11 (Continued...)

There are several topics to discuss regarding the draft, the coaching changes, and specifically the quarterback position for the 49ers in the upcoming year.

There was 950 comments or so in the last thread in only two days. I guess I am going to have to step my game up and get a new thread out a little more often. But on a serious note, it's always nice to see that many comments by fans that love their team. The concerns are there, but with the changes it seems as though some of the negative vibes that were put off by the 49ers organization were put in a casket and laid to rest with the new hirings and fresh start that seems to have been provided by the 49ers front office.

I do have to admit that I have not been thrilled with some of the decisions that Jed York has made in the past. I now realize that he is dedicated. He may not have the best experience but he is gaining it quickly. He has been making some very solid decisions as of late. And so has Jim Harbaugh.

With that said, there are still plenty of areas of concern on the Niners roster. There are some holes to fill both on defense and offense. General consensus has suggested that the two biggest areas of concern for the 49ers are at the quarterback position and in the secondary. There are a few stragglers that feel that the defensive line needs to be an immediate upgrade and high priority as well as the pass rush ... in other words, outside linebackers.

I want to open this thread up a bit differently. As Niners fans, I would love to hear what you think is the highest area of concern. And in order. Below, I will provide areas of concern and the priority that I feel that they should be in. After those priorities, I will list five players (in order again) that I feel the Niners could, or should draft. Understand that this is my opinion. My opinion is just an opinion. If you feel the need to disagree, I would appreciate a level of respect backed with legitimate and cold hard facts.

Side Note: Sometimes the discussion can get heated because of the passion of opinion. Everyone likes to feel like they're right. And nobody likes to be proven wrong. But understand that IF you are proven wrong, it should not be taken personally; sometimes there is knowledge to gain. There are a bunch of folks that have good background knowledge on these boards ... so please, should you disagree, disagree with class and make sure you understand the difference of FACT and OPINION. Let's keep it fun and civil.

Here are the priorities matched with a few players.

Star-divide

Priority #1 - Quarterback: The quarterback position has not been adequate for what seems like forever. There has not been a legit candidate and leader of the team since Jeff Garcia. Garcia lived in the shadow of two Hall of Famers in Joe Montana and Steve Young. When you follow guys like that, and don't possess the same surroundings, its really tough to carve out your own legacy. The question is now, will Jim Harbaugh be able to cultivate the next Steve Young ... or will it be the next Jeff Garcia? It could even potentially be the next Alex Smith if the 49ers are not careful. There is not a sure-thing-pick in this years draft at that position, so whoever is selected (and there will definitely be someone selected at that position) will be a gamble. The question is, who do we gamble on? Who is the safest pick? Well here are some ideas...

1 - Jake Locker -- Washington: Only if he is available in the 2nd Round

2 - Pat Devlin -- Delaware: 2nd/3rd Round

3 - Colin Kaepernick -- Nevada: 3rd/4th Round

4 - Andy Dalton -- TCU: 4th/5th Round

5 - Ben Chappell -- 6th/7th Round

Priority #2 - Cornerback: Some may argue that the secondary needs to be addressed before the quarterback position. In this draft, I tend to agree. Sometimes priority doesn't always equal the best pick. The cornerback position is a bit deeper this year in competition with last. There are plenty of people who are in the opinion that Patrick Peterson is the real deal and should not be overlooked if he falls to the #7 pick overall in next years draft. On the other side of that, there are a few folks that think that Prince Amukamara will be the better option. Whatever the case may be, it seems as though it would not be a bad idea to draft more than one cornerback to provide some insurance. Clements is not getting any younger and neither is Spencer. The 49ers had one of the worst secondary's in the league last year.

1 - Patrick Peterson -- LSU: 1st Round

2 - Brandon Harris -- Miami: Trade back to the end of the 1st only

3 - Jimmy Smith -- Colorado: Trade back to the end of the 1st/2nd Round

4 - Brandon Burton -- Utah: 2nd/3rd Round

5 - Aaron Williams -- Texas: 3rd/4th Round

Priority #3 - Wide Receiver: While some people may disagree here, it doesn't appear that even with the draft pick of Michael Crabtree that there is a solidified #1 at the position. That is fine sometimes ... when you are the New England Patriots or Indianapolis Colts. The 49ers need "that guy" who is going to make an immediate impact and force defenses to adjust accordingly. It doesn't help that there is not a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady throwing them the ball, but it takes two to tango... or something like that. Should the 49ers draft a premier receiver, it would with no question open things up a ton for guys like Frank Gore and Vernon Davis.

1 - A.J. Green -- Georgia: 1st Round

2 - Julio Jones -- Alabama: 1st Round

3 - Leonard Hankerson -- Miami: 2nd/3rd Round

4 - Titus Young -- Boise State: 2nd/3rd Round

5 - Vincent Brown -- San Diego State: 4th/5th Round

Wild Cards - Outside Linebacker, Defensive End, Running Back: While some may think that the first two of these wild cards may be more important than the wide receiver position, I would have to beg to differ. Consider the coaching staff and consider the players. You also have to consider the schemes and what the players are taught to do. But feel free to add your wild card priorities below. If you feel like one of these positions are more important, then please (with respect) provide your thoughts with some backing on why. Also provide some players that justify the 3rd priority and why.

P.S. Thanks for all the rec's in the last few posts... don't forget to rec this one.

Anyone see Vincent Brown today?

Watched him during my lunch break in 1 on 1’s against the CBs/S and he looked pretty good. Good burst and got very good separation.

I have him as our 5th option there above.

I really like Locker

Keep an eye on Locker his stock will only increase, I would be fine taking him at #7 and I guarantee as we approach draft day and he gets more hype all of you will too.

Depends.

If he has a horrible day on Saturday, it could go the other way too.

True

and while McShay did have some criticism for him today mostly he had a lot of positives. He also said he had the best day of any quarterback. Locker will interview great and best mode at combine, chances his stock does anything but rise is doubtful in my opinion.

I get the feeling that he is this year's Jimmy Clausen.

I think that the Seahawks are just about the only team that may consider him as a 1st rounder. And that in large part to fan base as well as draft slot. He would be able to sit and learn behind a very smart QB in Hasselbeck

They don't need a 1st round QB.

Kerry Collins will be good for them next year. He needs an offseason with Moss and Britt.

The Titans Dline and Linebacking corps are in dire need of some help.

They definitely need a QB

Collins is ancient.

I wouldn’t be the slightest surprised to see Locker in the 1st round. I think he is the top QB prospect right now.

disagree IMO

collins is 38 and i wouldnt consider rusty smith a real option at QB.

they need someone who can come in and learn from collins this year and start next year. i think locker and mallett are closest to that but locker wins out because he’s mobile.

they will get a draft pick for vince young even if it’s only a 4th rounder.

they can draft guys like LB greg jones, DT marvin austin, CB aaron williams, LB casey mathews, CB davon house, DT lawrence guy, etc in the later rounds and sport a ,uch improved defense.

I agree with you

I think they could easily go QB. Is it a high percentage it’s QB? No because there are so many other positions they could take. But they DO need a QB pretty bad.

His stock will rise

The QB position almost always flies up the draft board. I never thought he would be available at #7 once Luck went back to college.

It's Whore-baugh, remember?

I think he will lock in at #7

Gabbert is getting the hype and I believe that Mallett and Newton will get it next because of their wonderful win loss record, they play in the SEC, and their cannons they want people to believe they are an arm.

I haven't heard a lot of Ricky Stanzi talk. What does everyone think about drafting him in the 3rd or 4th round?

Stanzi is one of those guys that I am unsure about.

He is real streaky. And was throughout his career at Iowa. He either looks like a grade A stud, or a complete bust… he almost never has just an average day.

by Drew Kerr on Jan 24, 2011 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

Looked over his 2010 stats.

And he had a lot of multiple TD games, 8 out of 12 games in fact. And in the 4 games he didn’t, he still threw 1 TD. He also threw only 4 INTs in the regular season, which is good to see because he showed improvement year to year (he had a weird junior year).

And after some math, in losses Stanzi threw an average of 225.6 yards, 2.2 TDs, and .4 INTs. In wins, he threw an average of 239.4 yards, 2 TDs, and .3 INTs. That isn’t much variation.

IMO, his worst performance in the regular season was the last one against the Minnesota Golden Gophers were he went 10/22, 127 yards, 2 TDs. His best was against Ball State were he went 19/25, 288 yards, 3 TDs.

He doesn’t strike me as an elite passer, but he’s capable. I’d put his ceiling at maybe a slightly more productive Kyle Orton. Which would be a steal in the 3rd round.

Maybe from a statistical stand point things look okay.

But watching him play, he was definitely streaky in decision making. He has problems going through reads at times too.

i wouldn't take Stanzi that high.

but he is an intriguing late round prospect if he is there in the 5th or 6th.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

by these3words on Jan 25, 2011 1:56 AM PST up reply actions

Ricky Stanzi is dirt

He is the most unclutch Quarterback ever! On paper he may look decent but put him in any situation where you need a winner or someone to make a play when there isn’t one and he NEVER WILL.

Imagine the exact opposite of Joe Cool.

by Shermroy on Jan 24, 2011 4:19 PM PST reply actions

Really?

I get why you would think that based off of this season, which was anti-climactic to say the least. but you just have to go back to the year prior to see him being clutch in several comeback wins. Nothing is ever black and white, you just need to do a little bit of research before making asinine statements.

3 rookie qb's I think the Niners can be successful with...in order.

1. Pat Devlin
2. Jake Locker
3. Greg Mcelroy

The only thing that worries me is Lockers accuracy...

which is a big thing. He seems to have the intangibles though, and I think Harbaugh could work with him to improve his decision making skills. I think McElroy and Devlin don’t have the same arm as Locker, but in the WCO that really means nothing. I think Devlin will come out as the best qb out of this draft. McElroy came from a great team, which is why I put him third. But his accuracy is through the roof and he only threw picks in 4 games this year. I guess in the end, these are the qb’s i trust to not be busts.

Thats exactly why I still Think that Locker could surprise a lot of people...

People have been really down on him, but I think with the right team he could succeed. I think he is as good as Sanchez coming out of college. With a good running game and short timed passes he would have every chance at success.

His accuracy isn't that bad. The WR dropped 41 passes this year that hit them on their hands. Luck had 17.

If adjusted to the same Locker would have about 61-62 completion percentage.

Locker Accuracy

Todd Mcshay on Locker’s Accuracy
Needs to learn to put some more air under some of his deep balls. But overall accuracy is very good, especially considering how many times he is unable to follow through on throws due to pressure. He shows good touch on dump offs, flares, etc. Outstanding timing on comeback throws and is not afraid to lead the receiver back to the ball. Deep out accuracy and zip is excellent, as are accuracy on curl routes and square ins.

Gave him a 2 overall which means Above Average. 1’s are very hardly given out and represent essentially elite. 2 is a great score in terms of accuracy.

Keep in mind that a lot of Locker’s incompletions are because he is being rushed or his WR’s drop passes. And yes his WR’s have (if I remember correctly) almost 3 times as many dropped passes that hit there hands than I believe it was Andrew Luck.

While I do believe excuses are just that excuses and an elite quarterback will throw a team on his shoulders and make up for their flaws this definitely is worth noting for the whole Locker ordeal. Under the right tutelage Locker will be fantastic. I do not think he makes it past the #15 pick in the draft.

from what one of the guys on Nfl network was saying

he doesn’t have the strongest arm in the draft but hes suppose to be pretty accurate. Im not a college football person so I could be completely wrong, but they pointed out that Locker had all the tools but his accuracy and decision making were a problem at times. I forgot one of the commentators names but from what I remember he’s very intelligent about football and does his research thoroughly.

Locker doesn't get a chance to set his feet

go through his reads, make a decision, fire the ball and follow through.

He gets – Drop back, look at 1 read, is it there?, No – Run Yes – fire the ball as fast as possible and prepare to get hit. Hopefully the receiver catches it this time.

Linebacker Tamba Hali and rookie safety Eric Berry were added to the teams late Sunday after the Super Bowl teams were decided.
Berry, the Chiefs’ top pick in last year’s draft, had four interceptions and 126 total tackles last season. He’s the first Chiefs rookie to reach the Pro Bowl since Derrick Thomas after the 1989 season.

QB Draft weak

The general consensus seems to indicate there is not a “ringer” in this years QB draft class. If that is the case, especially while considering that none of the aforementioned potential QB draftes will be starting this season, why not go after a veteran (which we will anyways), or re-sign Alex Smith and then package this years 1st Rd pick with another pick for next season and trade for Carolinas 1st Rd pick next year and draft Andrew Luck in 2012 ….. looking around the league, I think the Panthers will be equally hapless next year too

by HeartlessMB on Jan 24, 2011 6:02 PM PST reply actions

If there was a "ringer" the 49ers would have no chance at drafting him at #7

Jake Locker of Washington was the only quarterback to throw a pick at today’s practice. He was inconsistent with his throws and was really sailing the ball in 7-on-7 drills. It may be due to early week jitters, but it will be something to watch as the week goes on. Locker … definitely did not look like a first round quarterback.

In the pit, offensive and defensive linemen squared off. Cameron Jordan was incredibly impressive. He showed quick hands and at one point had his way with one of the top offensive linemen in this year’s draft class, Anthony Costanzo. Jordan also showed that he is not a one-trick pony as he bull rushed Costanzo into the backfield on the very next rep. Costanzo redeemed himself later in the practice by stoning Jeremy Beal of Oklahoma. Iowa’s Christian Ballard was the next most impressive player along the defensive lineman. He and Jordan won virtually every snap.

Well

watching a bit of that game, a couple things jumped out to me. Missuri’s offensive line was horrendous against Nebraska. However, it did appear that once protection broke down Gabbert resorted to happy feet (something we have seen to much from Alex Smith). He didn’t look for checkdowns, and if the first read wasn’t available Gabbert tucked and ran with the ball. Considering that Missouri was pretty much a one read offense, you can’t really blame Gabbert for that. It was the happy feet that bothered me the most. However, i still do believe he should be considered the best QB in a real poor class. All of the QBs coming out this season are going to be projects. Some may be more ready than others (Locker), but others may have higher ceilings (Gabbert).

The 49ers will most likely have five picks in the final two rounds

Going through CBS Sports player rankings i have found some players that may actually be real steals in the last two rounds, well if they fall there.

SS- Nate Williams (Washington), FB- Charles Clay (Tulsa), OT- D.J. Young (Michigan State), CB- Josh Thomas (Buffalo), G- Ricky Henry (Arizona), QB- T.J. Yates (North Carolina), RB- Anthony Allen (Georgia Tech), S- Eric Hagg (Nebraska)

Those are just a couple that stand out to me. I have watched each of them play this season, the Buffalo game in person (don’t ask why).

Thomas is a pretty physical corner, and does well in coverage. That said, he didn’t play against great competition at Buffalo. He is 5-10, 196 and runs a 4.49/40.

I saw Young play a nice amount of games with Michigan State. I am a fan of Big Ten football, so he was on a lot on my TV. He played well against some darn good teams. At 296 LBs, he does need to add some bulk. I think he is a project much like we have with Alex Boone. But, he does have some real nice upside

Wouldn't fullback almost be a lock for one of these picks?

Isn’t the 5th round the starting point for taking a a fullback these days? I know this, the 49ers desperately need one. They need to draft one and they need to lure another free agent into camp to compete cause Jim Harbaugh out to be fired if Moran Norris is back on the roster.

These fringe starters and key backups Singletary gave scholarships to last season was his biggest mistake. Good coaches don’t tolerate fringe starters. Yes, often they settle for a guy with limited talent but a guy motivated to give his life to keep his roster spot and they usually play their none talented butt off. The 2010 49ers settled for uninspired play from uninspired talent and were bludgeoned to death by other teams because of it. This is one thing I want to see from Harbaugh this season.

Not with that last name and the effort everyone sees he gives. Given the weak draft class I can actually see him creeping into the late 1st round. If not someone will draft him in the 2nd round. Belichick has been drafting that type of player for three consecutive seasons in the 2nd round.

I think Locker is the first off the board

He has one big thing going for him, and it’s that he is VERY mobile. That’s been pretty huge this year. Look at Cutler’s two TD day, look at Vick, look at Rodgers extending the play and running for TDs, Big Ben is a perfect example of that when he escaped the pocket on 3rd down.

I think Locker is going to be good.

Locker does throw pretty well on the run

When he is rolling out he is more dangerous than when he is in the pocket because he is indecisive in the pocket. That wast also the same knock on Alex Smith when he came out.

Thank you and good point.

And based on tossing LockerSmith in the fire he never had the chance to feel a comfort in the pocket. No wonder Smith looks so good when he comes in during the middle of the game. He comes in running his ass off, something he is used to and he’s all comfy. But in a real game when it is the little things he breaks down. He (perhaps) inwardly wants it to be that hectic haywire, oh god let’s get this going, feeling.

Harbaugh wants a guy that can handle the game, handle the team. He wants a guy that in the huddle goes and points out John Candy in the stands and eases teammates. He wants a guy that is able to keep his cool when the play collapses but if you are only able to handle collapses then you are only good as a minimal part of the team.

yes but unless I read your premise wrong

you seemed to be defining his accuracy based on his accuracy whilst running. As you have noted yourself, that occurrence happens a low percentage of the time. The majority of the time the QB is and should be in the pocket. Now what is the percentage he has shown here in his time to show himself better. In his time where he is not having all the defense barrelling down on him? That is what we want, is it not? Being able to throw on the run is an additive to being able to throw in the pocket, isn’t it?

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 26, 2011 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

But it was a side fact. It was in a response to the comment that the top QBs make things happen when nothing is there. I said that Locker throws well while he is on the run. As an indication that he makes things happen.

And I would just say...

that what has he made happen in the Senior Bowl? Trust me I’m not saying that he’s going to be crud in the NFL. He has promise, but the fact of him being accurate on the run does not negate the fact that his throwing in the Senior Bowl has not been spectacular. I’m going to have to watch these practices but the question in my mind is, during the Senior Bowl where you have good O Linemen (or certainly better than he purportedly had in College) and the Defense playing it relatively easy, then he should be able to make hits in the pocket. Oh and should we note that he most probably has better receivers as well?

are what you west coast homers are wearing when you call the guy immoble after he spent 2 years making a living out of dodging and weaving real defenses in the SEC. I’m telling you, all of you, that when it is all said and done you will eat your words. The guy can roll out, step up, avoid the rush, and get the ball to his receiver. If anyone has bias goggles on, it is Drew, and anyone else who continually calls this guy ‘a statue" or “completely immoble.” If we don’t take him, it will be our loss. I’d love to see what a kid with his tools can do after a couple of years of NFL coaching and sitting behind a vet.

How accurate has he been during the Senior Bowl?

And why do you feel you need to add “on the run” should we just plan on having no offensive line so he can be on the run from the start? I think not. You have some valuable input but you don’t put much meat around it. I’d ask that you give a bit more meat into your statements and that would be of more value and show your value to the concepts. :-)

It's not ok so we won't have an offensive line

You just call more bootlegs. Granted, you can’t survive on that, but I think when a QB can be accurate on the run, but struggles in the pocket, it’s a footwork kind of thing. I think he gets his body into the correct position when he is running, but fails to do it when he is in the pocket, or fails to do it consistently while in the pocket. But I think it shows you that the QB is accurate if you can get his feet right.

I always relate to throwing in baseball, I played shortstop and I was always really accurate when charging the ball and throwing to first base, but sometimes I got wild when I let the ball come to me and set up and threw. It had some to do with thinking too much when the ball got to me, but I consistently charged the ball the same way, but didn’t always set my feet consistently when the ball came into me.

You must not have been very good

Because I’m right. How am I wrong? Instead of saying I’m wrong about baseball, why don’t you prove me wrong.

I was more consistent when I threw off the run, and struggled because I changed my motion when set. How am I wrong. And it’s not different with football, because it’s all about consistency and being able to repeat your throwing motion. You throw different, but the ability to repeat your motion is important in both. Coincedence that baseball and football both have arm slots they throw out of?

Nope.

SO WHY DOESN’T SOMEONE JUST PROVE ME WRONG INSTEAD OF SAYING I’M WRONG, SAYING I’M CHICKEN LITTLE, OR SAYING I’M SUPERFICIAL. I’M GETTING REALLY SICK OF PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES THROWING STONES!

My Draft thinking so far

I have been researching the 49er draft and the draft in general for a while now. I read pretty much every post on the site and am well aware of everything going on with the niners. With that said I am thinking unless Patrick Peterson falls into our laps I think we trade down to the middle of the 1st.

This will essentially give us approx pick 15 in the first round and 2 picks mid 2nd round. This should give us a lot of bang for our buck and prevent reaches.

Round 1 – The only QB I could possibly fall in love with that this point is Jake Locker, who WILL be an excellent pick but not many people like it.
More realistically this is a spot where we can get a DE/OLB like Cameron Jordan or potentially Von Miller if he makes it down this far.

Round 2
CB is relatively deep in this draft and there is some definite high quality potential in the second round like Smith from Colorado, BHarris from Miami? Ras I dowling and a few more.
From here on out pick best available and your favorite QB…….

At this point in time I think this is the best draft option.

by Shermroy on Jan 24, 2011 11:20 PM PST reply actions

For trade charts to work

Jacksonville would supply us with the second rounder I talked about however if Prince is available we hold some power there with Texans/Cowboys need for CB

by Shermroy on Jan 24, 2011 11:24 PM PST up reply actions

Either way

I was high on drafting Prince with the #7 pick but then realized the depth at CB so I think we go with DE/OLB with our first pick.

Then I think we all agree that there are a lot of round 2-5 quarterbacks that we like, which Harbaugh can choose from.

by Shermroy on Jan 24, 2011 11:27 PM PST up reply actions

i don't see Jacksonville trading up.

they can get Ryan Kerrigan at #16.

Showing concern with Locker but the dark horse from Nevada is pretty accurate. We can trade down and stock more picks get a great CB, DE, OLB and draft a guy in the 3rd or 4th.

by chriscream on Jan 25, 2011 6:43 AM PST reply actions

I'm a fan of both QBs for the right price.

I like Locker for sure and would love him on our team, I’d even be ok at 7 because I don’t think he gets out of the top 10.

As for Kaepernick, he shows upside, and he is very intriguing, but don’t judge him on his accuracy using a throwing motion he won’t use in the Pros. It’s like a Pitcher that is accurate throwing sidearm, then changing him to throw overhand, different motion, different pitcher. If Kaepernick has a big pro day with a new throwing motion, I will officially be on board. But until then, he is nothing more than a developmental QB.

Re: Poll

Simply put, yes, there are options that we could spend a 1st on for a QB. When putting the emphasis on ANY, then you can always answer yes. There shouldn’t be any Niner fan in existence who wouldn’t give up our 2011 1st rounder and then some for a guy named Brady, Brees, Rivers, Rodgers, Manning (Peyton), or someone similar.

Now, is that a realistic option? No. Thinking about what could realistically be had, there’s no QB available in the draft or via trade that we should spend our first rounder on.

So is June 6th the first time he comes up for full release? Seems like that is his release date, but then it’s confusing with that being the first time he can apply for work release. It says that’s the first date he can be fully released for good behavior is June6th I think?. I read that he only has one mark against him there so he probably gets out with good behavior.

My guess is June 6th.

My New 49ers Mock

1. CB- Patrick Peterson, Louisiana State: My post yesterday pretty much covered why i think he will be available for the 49ers at 7.

2. QB- Ryan Mallett, Arkansas: CBS Sports and Walter Camp Football has his stock status dropping by the minute. Additionally, i have him as the 39th best prospect at this point. Listen, i am not a huge fan of Mallet’s, bue we would be getting great value here.

3. LB- Dontay Moch, Nevada: At 229 LBs, Moch is a little undersized right now. I think he can and will add some weight in the off-season. He should be a dynamic OLB in our 3-4 system.

4. DT- Ian Williams, Notre Dame: I have had the pleasure of watching Williams play and grow as a golden domer of the last couple of seasons. I think he would be a perfect fit as an end in the 3-4. This dude has a great motor, and passion for the game.

4. WR- Austin Pettis, Boise State: He isn’t a flash receiver. However, Pettis runs solid routes, has great hands and could turn into a nice #2 WR in the NFL. I am betting that his stock goes up over the next two months, so he may not be available here.

5. FB- Stanley Havili, USC: As much as i do like Merecic, i cannot see spending a 3rd round pick on him, and that might be what it takes. Havili is a traditional FB that can run the ball. We need a rushing FB in the WCO (see: Tom Rathman and William Floyd).

6. S- Will Hill, Florida: Coming out after his Junior Season may have been a mistake. I believe Hill thought he would go in the first 2 rounds, but current projections have him in the late 5th and early 6th. This would be a steal for the 49ers, and enable us to groom his and let him get more maturity and experience.

6. LB- Mike Mohamed, California: The one good thing about possibly drafting Merecic is that he would have added depth at LB too. However, i have us taking Havili, so the 49ers need to address ILB depth and ST plays. Mohamed was a solid all around player for CAL, and would be good depth at this position.

7. OL- D.J. Young, Michigan State: I have watched him play over the last couple of seasons. I tend to view a lot of Big Ten games, and he really did stick out to me as a real nice player. Young is only 296 LBs, so he will have to add some weight. May be a project like Alex Boone, but has the same amount of upside.

7. CB- Josh Thomas, Buffalo: Another player i have seen play (actually in person). He is a physical corner with pretty good coverage skills. Could contribute on ST right away, or sit on the PS.

Nice

I think Marecic goes in the 5th. I think you would be fine having him at 5. The first FB off the board last year was in the 5th round to the Jets. They are an antiquated position in the modern NFL and will be around in the later rounds.

Mallet is a great value in the 2nd, but even still, if we don’t think he is going to succeed, why waste a pick at all? I do agree with you though, I think Mallet could drop. I think either Newton or Mallet drop into the 2nd. I’d rather have Newton in 2nd though over Mallet.

As for 3rd round Moch, do you like him better than Casey Mathews? I’d personally rather have Mathews.

In 4th round, why not Titus Young over Pettis? While I don’t think he is as fast as DeSean Jackson like Drew thinks, I do agree with him in that they are similar WRs, and he could be a good fit next to the possession receiver that Crabtree has become.

by hudd07 on Jan 25, 2011 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

Simple Answer

Young won’t be available in the 4th, or even the 3rd for that matter.

You are right about FBs, however, Merecic does more. He can backup at ILB and will be a standout ST player. Hence, him being projected in the 3rd by some outlets. Havili is the next best option, and he is actually a better true FB than Merecic

Matthews looks more like an ILB to me. To draft him would be to get another Bowman type player. We need a true pass rusher at OLB. Moch looks like that to me

I just think it would be hard to pass up on Mallett in the 2nd. I don’t think Newton will be available, some team will reach ala Tebow.

Mila "Sweet Lips" Kunis, as stated by Scarlett Johansson. I couldn't agree more. Reverse would be true too!!!!

by nocal81(Vincent) on Jan 25, 2011 12:57 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Disagree

I think Young goes in 3rd at earliest. I know others disagree with me on this, but he doesn’t have the elite speed that Jackson has. He is fast, but Jackson coming out of school was a big time punt returner too and his 4.29 speed was blazing. I think Young drops just for that reason.

Marecic and FB in general. All FBs play special teams. That’s their deal. So it’s not like Havili won’t be playing special teams, so he will fall further than Marecic. That’s expected from a FB. Heck even Moran Norris still plays special teams. Maybe Marecic goes in 4th because he can be a back up LB (he isn’t being looked at that position at all), but I really doubt the 3rd.

Matthews has a high motor, and is pretty athletic. I don’t know why people project him as ILB vs OLB. Same with Bowman. When you have the talent and size, you move based on where you fit best. Moch just is WAY too small. Didn’t he way in at like 227 or something? That’s a WR going against a Tackle.

by hudd07 on Jan 25, 2011 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

If you think Moch is too small, Casey is no bigger

Only about 235…

Don’t get me wrong, he’d be an excellent 3rd round pick, and better than Moch, but there isn’t that much of a size difference…

I think he could play olb. He's a bit smaller and less athletic than his brother

but I think he will definitely be a star in this league. We need a pass rusher and If he could convert to olb that would be perfect. Imagine seeing Willis, Bowman, on the inside and Casey and (i know im wishing) taylor mays on the outside.

Reverse would be true too!!!!

by Arkie49er on Jan 26, 2011 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

Some quotes that I really liked or thought were interesting.
-Colin Kaepernick has been the most impressive of the North quarterbacks. Despite his long, awkward release, he is the only quarterback that has shown a willingness to go downfield with his reads and he has done so with success. Kaepernick has launched some really ugly passes that include overthrows and ducks on the short routes, but he’s working hard and really putting in all of the effort. After every mistake, Kaepernick can be seen going to the coaching staff and trying to not make the same mistake twice.
-Cameron Jordan stole the show. He is by far the best player here at the Senior Bowl and he’s been making himself a lot of money. Jordan is looking like a top ten pick out there. Whether it be 1-on-1′s or 11-on-11′s, Jordan has been unblockable. He has made the most of his long arms and big hands. Jordan uses them better than any other d-lineman in attendance. If you had to describe the way Jordan uses his hands to manhandle offensive lineman, there is no better description than, "ninja hands." During 11-on-11′s, Jordan ripped through the offensive line and blew up Ricky Stanzi, which resulted in a forced fumble.

-If it weren’t for Jordan, Christian Ballard would be stealing the show. He’s put on an impressive performance and regularly has won his matchups.
-Jake Locker has yet to impress. He continued with his inconsistent accuracy and checked down during 7-on-7′s on a regular basis. Locker hasn’t made any big impressions on anyone and continues to raise questions. He was considered a potential number one overall pick, but has only gotten worse since then. At this point, he doesn’t even look like a first-rounder out there.
Titus Young impressed in practice today. He was very quick and shifty in and out of his routes. He was blowing by the defensive backs and making great adjustments on the ball.

Barrows said

Dalton and Ponder are looking the best for the South.

He said “Among the South’s QBs, FS Ponder and TCU’s Dalton are starting to emerge as favorites. Scouts say Ponder’s mechanics won’t need much work on the next level. Dalton has a swagger that some teams are seeking, and he’s been accrate with his passes early on in practice”.

I havn’t heard much bad stuff regarding Ponder except from Drew. I got to look more into this guy, it appears he is pretty polished.

by hudd07 on Jan 25, 2011 3:58 PM PST reply actions

2010
Oklahoma game: Ponder completely flopped. He was out done and had no idea where he was even at half the time. Comp rate for that game – 39% 11/28, 113 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT.

NC State = Loss (Game ended on a fumble by the RB, but there were 4 incompletions on bad passes by Ponder)

UNC = Loss

Chik-Fil-A Bowl (He really blew it. He was 1 for 5 with 6 yards before he went out in the 2nd Qtr with a concusion. The back up came in made Ponder look like he shoulda been on the bench the entire year).

I watched 3 out of the 4 games here. Ponder really is not good. He is for sure not starter material. Coaching can’t cure incompetence and a lack of leadership and drive. He also missed two more games with ticky-tac injuries against Clemson (prob ‘cause he didn’t want to get hit by Bowers) and Virginia Tech the last game of the year.

2009
Choked against Miami (3 straight incomplete passes at the goaline to lose the game) See here
S. Florida = choke
Boston College = choke
Georgia Tech = choke
Clemson = choke

Did not play the last three games due to injury…. Starting to see a trend?

I won’t even post his sophomore year ‘cause it isn’t pretty either. Lets just say he threw 12 TD’s and 13 INT’s.

I DO NOT want Christian “the choker” Ponder. He is not good. But watch all you want and form your own opinion that contradicts mine just to do it.

He also tends to hold on to the ball too long

He has been sacked 47 times in his career there. I would say more than half of those are because he held on longer than he should have. Or freaked out at the first sign of pressure. He doesn’t know how to slide in the pocket to avoid pressure.

I was thinking Favre… just didn’t remember the details. I thought the Packers wouldn’t trade him, so he retired…and then came back….and then retired….etc.

I think they didn't want him going to the NFC North

Even though that’s where he wanted to go, so basically he retired, GB released him from the contract with stips he couldn’t go to certain teams (pretty sure it was similar), and that’s why he ended up with the Jets.

Or was he traded to the Jets? I can’t remember now.

by hudd07 on Jan 26, 2011 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

he was traded to the Jets

the Packers still owned his rights when he unretired the first time.

then he retired from the Jets, they released his rights, he unretired again as a free agent, and signed with the Vikings.

Mock with trade scenario:

this assumes that a CBA is in place by draft day, but here goes:

Niners get:
4th overall pick
Carson Palmer

Bengals get:
7th overall pick
45th overall pick

1-4 CB – Patrick Peterson – LSU
3-12 OLB – Sam Acho – Texas
4-11 WR – Vincent Brown – San Diego State
4-18 CB – Justin Rogers – Richmond
5-10 FB – Owen Marecic – Stanford
6-9 K – Alex Henery – Nebraska
6-25 QB – Greg McElroy – Alabama
7-7 S – Tejay Johnson – TCU
7-8 C – Brandon Fusco – Slip ‘n’ Slide Rocks, or whatever that school is called

I think the trade is possible. The Bengals are known for being one of the cheapest teams in the league, and they won’t want to spend money on Carson Palmer for one more year when they know he won’t be back after that. I doubt they will be offered a 2nd rounder for him straight up, so they might be willing to move down 3 spots in the first round to make it happen.

As far as the picks go, this site projects most of those players to be available at those spots. I think I covered just about all our needs with good players. I didn’t manage to get a d-lineman, but i really don’t think that position is super-urgent.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

trade value chart:

http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

according to the chart, they would come out 150 points ahead in terms of draft picks. and like i said, they are incredibly cheap and this trade would save them quite a bit of money.

besides, Carson Palmer can’t be a part of their long term plan at this point. i don’t see why they would hang onto him when they could unload him now, save money, and gain 150 points of draft value in the process.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

by these3words on Jan 25, 2011 8:53 PM PST up reply actions

i still think there's a chance the Broncos take Peterson

so i probably wouldn’t make this trade until the 4th pick was on the board, but Baalke could always talk to the Bengals ahead of time and see if they would do this if Peterson is there.

if the trade was finalized before the draft and then Peterson goes top 3, i have no idea what we’d do with the 4th pick.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

by these3words on Jan 25, 2011 10:26 PM PST up reply actions

Do you not make the trade to get Carson Palmer just because of Peterson?

Very nice

I’ll even throw a rec at this.

Its basically Orton for a high second… I’ll make that trade. Orton was putting up ridiculous numbers on that inflated, throw 50 times a game downfield, broncos offense. He could probably put up at least half that here which would put him about even with our beleaguered, highly underrated and departing, current starting QB,. Plus, we have a ton of lower picks to move back into the second round if we want. Orton is the only QB that interests me in FA. I’m not really that into Kolb even. Philly is a good team. Lots of QBs could throw for great numbers there.

Can someone please explain this to me.......VON MILLEr

Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller was very disappointing as was Texas’ Sam Acho. Miller held his own in the pit against the offensive linemen, but really struggled in coverage. Miller was always running behind the tight ends or backs and was having a difficult time reading and reacting to the throws. Miller would get caught back peddling and he didn’t have the reaction to make a quick break on the ball.
From http://nflmocks.com/2011/01/25/senior-bowl-day-2-south-squad-practice-notes/

Now Check out what ESPN.com had to say.
“He was unstoppable against players who are expected to go in the first two days of the draft.”
Read the entire article, they call Von Miller the next coming of Clay Mathews and Brian Cushing.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2011/notebook?page=seniorbowl0125

and for those that dont have insider…..sorry?
Just know that one multiple occasions they say Von Miller is basically BEAST MODE
How can reviews of the senior bowl be so polar opposite? If Von Miller is killing it as much as ESPN is saying then thats fantastic news for us.

That's a HUGE gap even if it hasn't happened between the 2nd and 5th round.

I GUARANTEE he is not going to last ’til the 5th round. If he lasts to the 4th round that will be a HUGE shock. But if he has a great Senior Bowl and a good Combine (which I know he will have) then he will no doubt be a 3rd rounder… possibly even go in the 2nd round.

by Drew Kerr on Jan 26, 2011 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

I think he SHOULD be a 5th rounder

He could go in 2nd. I think 4th is a reach for him though. Until I see him with his “new” delivery I’m not taking him before the 4th. Like I have said a 100 times, if he comes out with a new delivery on his pro day, which he should, then I reserve the right to bump him up at that time. But I’m just unwilling to use a 2nd round pick on this guy when I don’t even know if he can change his delivery and be effective. I think the hype machine is in effect, and once the dust settles, he goes 4th round if he doesn’t change his delivery.

I could eat crow

I havn’t waivered at all though. The way he sits exactly right now, he is a 4th-5th rounder at best for all the same reasons Tebow was expected to drop. Tebow changed his motion at his Pro Day, and rocketed back up the draft board. So can things happen, yes. But the fact remains he has a LOT to change about his delivery, and in the 2nd round it scares me. If the Vikings reach and grab him in the 2nd, does that mean that’s where he should have gone? No.

Tebow went in the 1st, but it was a general consensus that he should have gone in the 2nd round at best. Just because a team falls in love and reaches, does not mean that’s where he should be. I don’t think a guy that is looking at 2+ years before he can make an impact, IF he changes the delivery that made him successful, is worth a 2nd rounder. Again, if he debuts a new delivery and is accurate with hit, he could absolutely fly up the draft chart, but the guy as he is now, is 4th rounder at best and I still think he should go in the 5th.

From what I am watching he looks like crap.

Bouncing screen passes off the turf. Hitting borders in drills… Mayock and Davis called him a “game-manager”.

I'm not watching, just occassionally reading tweets

From what I’ve seen over the season, all the QBs at the Senior Bowl don’t have what it takes to be a successful starting Qb at the next level. So a compliment like being called a game-manager is the highest praise I’d expect.

I never heard him not admitting "it"

He said pretty much the same thing you said about Kaepernick but without the derisiveness. yes both have unorthodox throwing motions. Both are correctable. You can throw a ball on a rope but if that rope is attached to defender then it’s not of much use for your team is it? Yes Dalton has quirks in his throwing motion, as does Kaepernick. Locker maybe doesn’t but how much can you blame all the missed catches on his receiving corps. if that’s true then how many receivers from Nevada and TCU are in the draft? God are we the Seahawks from a few years back trying to find reasons why the receivers aren’t catching balls? (Which to an extent they are still trying to do except in that one game) or are we the 9ers?

I have never denied his throwing motion is not prototypical.

I just don’t think it is going to effect him a bit, like you seem to think. He has done fine with it playing D-1 NCAA football for the last 4 years. He has thrown for 10,000 yards with 82 TD, averaging only 6 INT’s a year with it. If you bet against him, then you are naive and don’t really pay close attention. That’s all it boils down to.

By virtually all accounts, Kaepernick was the most impressive quarterback on Monday. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock also praised Kaepernick’s arm power, noting that it had Eli and Peyton “giggling” at last year’s Manning Quarterback Camp before Monday’s eye-opening display. It’s early, but Kaepernick already appears to be gaining ground on the elite draft-eligible QBs.

As the Up shows it was to Hudd’s response that the draft has not happened. Therefore your speculation nor his speculation can be warranted except based on what is happening now. Hudd’s response was based on manraj’s note that sources (unfortunately no darn link to the actual source that reported those sources was provided) noted that the Vikes and he Dolphins are looking heavily at Kaepernick with possibilities of him going in the second round.

Phew! I think that brings that feeling apple a bit closer to the tree. Now if we could actually get a link for that we might be able to bring it closer.

Colin Kaepernick has locked up a top-60 pick in the NFL Draft, according to one long time scout.

From the local paper in Reno:

Dave-Te Thomas, who runs a scouting service for the NFL (Scouting Services Inc.), said in an e-mail today that former Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick has “secured at least a top-60 pick” in April’s NFL draft.

Top 60 would mean no worse than the second round.

“The Cincy coaches called yesterday and have been pouring (sic) over his info,” wrote Thomas, whom Chris Murray has written about in previous blogs. “Minnesota, Washington and Arizona are following him around like toilet paper stuck to the bottom of a shoe. Everyone says he’s secured a top 60 pick.”

Thomas said he’s been in the scouting business since 1968 and believes Kaepernick is a rare find.

“… Character-wise, this kid is the closest you will ever find to Roger Staubach, and watching him on the field you can see the same work ethic, rare athleticism and desire to succeed,” Thomas wrote. “The most impressive thing this week in Mobile? When he makes a mistake, he instantly huddles with the coaches to rectify it. This kid is oozing in talent.”

Kaepernick will play for the North squad in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Saturday and will take part in the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in February. The NFL draft is April 28-30 in New York City.

About the arm motion

http://www.rgj.com/article/20110126/SPORTS06/101260404/1018/SPORTS

Stupid thing won’t let me copy and paste, but I find the story interesting because ESPN continues to downplay Kaepernick’s progress of changing his throwing motion, while others seem to be glowing about the progress. I don’t agree or disagree about anything said (I’m not there, watching) but it’s funny how there can be varying opinions on something like a throwing motion; it’s either changing or it’s not!

by JSing on Jan 26, 2011 1:22 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Like I said,

if it gets the job done, who really cares how it “looks”.

He could throw like Dennis Eckersley for all I care. What matters in the end, is the end result of a football game.

All the concerns… not one DB in these practices has even been close to getting a jump on ANY of his passes. Plus, I think people are waaaaaayyyyyyy over exaggerating how bad his motion is. He didn’t throw for over 10,000 yards on his career with 82 TD’s ‘cause it’s so easy to get a jump on; not to mention his 24 career INT’s…that’s an average of only 6 a year. He has played against Pac-10 teams as well as others and beat them. His last game was against Bost College… he demolished them.

Don't like that at all...

Jimmy Smith is still on the board and we pick a questionable 4-3 end who will take a couple years to turn into an OLB?

I know he doesn’t get much hype, but Smith is going to rocket up mock drafts in the next couple months, and there is a good reason why.

In his last two seasons, he allowed less than 15 completions, no touchdowns, only one first down.

When they played Georgia he completely shut down A.J. Green until they adjusted and got the matchup with the other corner, Jalil Brown.

His one on one cover skills are probably the best in the draft and I think in 2 or 3 years… teams that pass on him are going to regret it when they have to play him.

Just because you’ve never heard of something doesn’t make it less respectable, maybe just less identifiable. Myspace was bigger than Facebook at one point. In all fairness to Drew, we don’t know if he was asserting that because he had never heard of them they are joke, or if he has some knowledge about the writers that we don’t.

What makes Mel Kiper more respected, because he’s been doing it longer? He’s wrong just as often as he is right. If they’re not respectable because you’ve not heard of them, then under the same logic you can say they are respectable because they have someone there covering the game and practices. Unless Drew knows something we don’t.

As for our first round pick, obviously Patrick Peterson but that is doubtful. Von Miller is getting awesome reviews so I think he for sure is a possbility. However some people are saying he could even be top 5 pick. Prince will for sure drop to us, so thats not a bad consolation.

Kiper on Kaepernick

Earlier in the day, I provided a couple links regarding how various scouting agencies/draft analysts feel about the progression Kaepernick has made in terms of the throwing motion and how he has looked in Senior Bowl practices. The most notable opinion was from Dave-Te Thomas, who runs Scouting Services Inc., who opined that Kaepernick has locked-up a top-60 pick.

Enter Mel Kiper Jr. The following is an excerpt from an ESPN chat with Mel Kiper Jr.:

Eric (Truckee, Ca): Do you think Colin Kaepernick is worth a first three round pick?

Mel Kiper (1:36 PM): No. I think that’s a little early. You’re looking at a guy who’s a gifted athlete. He’s 6-5, 230, 4.5 speed. He’s got a good arm, but he needs to tweak his mechanics. Right now, he’s a thrower, not a pitcher. He’s a developmental, long range prospect as a QB. When you get into the 4-5 round, you start to think about a Kaepernick. You think about some of those QBs that have gone in the 6-7 round, he could even go then.

To reference something I said earlier, I find it interesting that there isn’t a consensus on whether the throwing motion has improved. Throwing motion is something that’s pretty tangible. It’s either changing or it’s not, and unless I’m mistaken, there’s only one Colin Kaepernick at the Senior Bowl this week.

Drew K. made a great point earlier about how it doesn’t matter how he throws, as long as he wins games. And although there has been great debate about whether that motion will allow him to win games, it certainly comes down to what Drew said.

Anyway, I’m not trying to rehash the throwing mechanics debate, I just wanted to point out an interesting quirk.

Also

Gabbert doesn’t play at a school that usually shoots out pro QBs. They have had some QBs throw up some crazy numbers recently (Chase Daniel), but it hasn’t translated to the NFL. Once people reazlied that Gabbert was different, then the bandwagon came jumping

Mila "Sweet Lips" Kunis, as stated by Scarlett Johansson. I couldn't agree more. Reverse would be true too!!!!

by nocal81(Vincent) on Jan 26, 2011 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

Well I am glad you brought up Daniel.

Daniel was actually head and shoulders a better QB at Mizzou than Gabbert. Chase Daniel was an UDFA. How does that happen? Daniel has looked really solid in preseason games. Go to NFL.com and check some of them out. He also is playing behind one of the better QB’s in the last decade or so to play the game in Brees. I actually think that Daniel has more upside as a pro than does Gabbert.

We’ll see what happens, but it just goes to show that sometimes you just have to overlook some of the pundits predictions. Gabbert is absolutely one that I think will back fire on them.

Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result. -Lombardi

by Drew Kerr on Jan 26, 2011 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

I agree in regards to pundit predictions

However, wasn’t Jason White a better college QB than Josh Freeman? One was a 1st round pick and the other didn’t see the light of the day in the NFL. I was comparing those two simply because of their systems and the Big 12.

Sometimes college success doesn’t translate to the NFL. It is all about whether the game you play, your mechanics and your physical atrributes translate to the NFL

BTW, i agree with you in regards to Daniel during the pre-season, i think he has a future as a backup in the NFL. He was way too overlooked coming out of Mizzou

Mila "Sweet Lips" Kunis, as stated by Scarlett Johansson. I couldn't agree more. Reverse would be true too!!!!

by nocal81(Vincent) on Jan 26, 2011 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

Jason White

Yes, and he would have been one helluva pro had he now blown out both his knees.

Daniel: I think that once Brees decides to hang it up, Daniel has a real good shot as taking over as the starter, Same exact build, mentality, and playing style as Brees.

I agree to an extent with you in regards to sometimes college talent doesn’t translate. Hence why I don’t think Mallett will be that good, or make it for that matter. You have to look beyond stats sometimes and look at other things…intangibles go a lot further than what people tend to think. See Alex Smith.

Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result. -Lombardi

by Drew Kerr on Jan 26, 2011 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

From David White

That’s the one who could make the best transition to the NFL, and not necessarily the one with JaMarcus Russell’s arm, Alex Smith’s brain, Vince Young’s feet or Matt Leinart’s aura

He was talking about what to look for in a QB. All four of those QBs have been busts, and all four of the assets listed are some of the major things pundits look for in a QB.

On the same note, why did Drew Brees fall to the 2nd round? Simple, because many didn’t think that his arm translated well to the NFL.

That tells me something though. You step it up big in your big games and your ass is on Sportcenter. Locker even in a bad game was all over Sportcenter trying to run over linebackers.

Just checked his stats… Wildly inconsistent… and 2 big TOs to 1 TD in a close loss to Iowa. (The rush probably got to him)

And worse his 2 horrible performances against TT and Nebraska. Do not want in the top 20 just off that.

McShay... yuck.

He might have been right on Clausen but do you remember Andre Woodson? McShay championed him hardcore in 08. Even had him going number 14 in a mock he did. http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=178790 He had Brian Brohm going at number 8 in the same draft. Anyways, Woodson was a 6th round pick, was cut before camp by the Giants did some PS work and now he’s in the UFL.

Haha... funny

but actually respect Kiper’s eval’s more than McShay’s. It doesn’t say a ton, but you get some right, you get some wrong. Nobody is 100% correct. I do value his opinion a majority of the time though… just take it with a grain of salt. And of course I don’t agree with EVERYTHING he says.

I just think that people are going to be very surprised with Kaepernick. Senior Bowl will have a lot to do with where he is selected. He is going to have a good combine, that’s a given. But people are going to want to see how exactly he plays in a game with better competition.

I would be careful to bet against him. His numbers have been off the charts.

Just for the record, Kiper and McShay will knock a guys value down 3 rounds more than it should be if there is any kind of abnormalty in mechanics. Mechanics don’t mean everything. HTS posted some really good thoughts in a FP post yesterday on the subject.

I mean they bumped Blaine Gabbert up to a #1 overall pick because he has decent mechanics. Guess what, Alex Smith did too, and they did the same thing with him. I mean Alex had some footwork issues, but other than that, everything “appeared” squeaky clean. Tebow was a 1st rounder that they had slotted as a 3rd/ 4th. I think at one point they were thoroughly convinced that he would be drafted as an H-Back… well… he was a 1st round QB. Say what you will about Daniels, but Tebow didn’t do half bad in the games he started. He had one come from behind win (which shows his true leadership) and almost another against San Diego.

Anyway, I have to retire from the Kaepernick subject until after the Senior Bowl, because certain people on these boards have no respect and will just about go to the length of calling someone crazy because they see potential in a player to be drafted somewhere other than where they think he should.

Heck, I think Ryan Mallett should be a 3th rounder. Do you see me going out of my way to try and convince everyone of that? Nope. I don’t. Simply have stated my thoughts on him and left it alone but in turn have got attacked by certain people on these boards ‘cause "I’m frikin’ nuts… he’s gonna be the best QB in the history of the game!".

If Harbaugh is smart, he will cut his carries down to keep him fresh throughout the year. We will need him in the playoffs. I just don’t have a ton of faith in Dixon. Besides, you are never going to see him break off a 50 yarder. We need another back that can do that.

That is the issue i am having too

I just think that he is going to be elite, and that is hard to pass up in the 3rd.

Dion Lewis, Chad Spann, Nic Grigsby, and Baron Batch also come to mind.

Dixon already did break a 50 yarder

In pre-season remember. I think he actually did it pretty early in the game so it was against 2nd stringers.

Go AD!

Gimme 1 round!

Don't remember that.

He’s just not fast… he’s gonna get caught from behind more often than not. And I guess that’s the point more than anything.

I'll take 8, 20 yard runs

over 2 80 yard runs. Anytime of the day , any day of the week, any week of the year.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 27, 2011 2:09 AM PST up reply actions

Not me.

2 80 yard runs are TD’s.

8 20 yard runs could then have our QB throw an INT right after.

I get your point though, the 8 20 yard ones move the chains, but could mean zero points, whereas the 80 yard ones are TDs.

by hudd07 on Jan 27, 2011 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

8 20 yard runs

Under all but the worst circumstances = 8 first downs and more than likely at LEAST 2 touchdowns.

Gimme 1 round!

Dixon's best regular season run was only 10 yards

but he had a WHOLE LOT of open field in front of him. A shame that end zone got in the way.

Gimme 1 round!

Stupid endzone

No wonder our offense hated it.

Obviously depends on where they happened

But I don’t equate 8 first downs to 2 tds. If you just looked at our stats as a team we scored 29 total TDs (19 passing 10 rushing). We also had as an offense, not counting first downs by penalty, 234 first downs (149 passing, 85 rushing). So just by that math, it’s basically one TD per 8 first downs.

So I’m thinking the two 80 yard TD runs are better.

by hudd07 on Jan 27, 2011 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

Depends..

If you are a bad team that is overmatched in talent and outcoached… take the 2 80 yard runs. High variance and high risk are really the only ways you are going to pull out wins.

If you are a good team with decent talent and coaches, always take the 8 20 yard runs.

Lets run a little thought experiment. Avg starting field position in the NFL, 28 yard line.

2 80 yard runs is 12 points from that distance.

8 20 yard runs is a 1st and 10 from midfield. Just being in that situation is worth 2 expected points. In other words, if you divide the number of points you scored after being in that situation by the times you were in that situation, the result would generally be 2.

So being at midfield with 1st and 10 8 times you should expect to get on average 16 points.. or 2.75 touchdowns.

But averages are pulled down by bad teams. If you are an above average team, you’ll likely be looking at 3 TD’s.

With our team this year… I’d take the 2 80’s….

But next year… I’d hope to be able to take the 8 20’s.

I do remember that

And, i was sitting front row when it happened. However, it was the final pre-season game when neither San Diego or San Francisco were really playing anyone. So, it doesn’t validate Dixon’s ability at all

Re: Dixon

I’d be comfortable with him playing second fiddle, thunder, to another RB.

Gore, Dixon/Devine

Gore will last longer if he takes less carries.

The most important thing for Gore is keeping him healthy in to the playoffs.

The only way to do that, is by minimizing his carries. He needs to do about half of what he is currently doing.

Dixon and Devine can take those carries.

Even take away a quarter of the carries and he should be fine.

IDK if he’ll be available, however, Ryan Williams (Virginia Tech) is someone who fits that description as well.

A bigtime "NO WAY" on Locker

As a Stanford fan I got to see Locker against a tough defense and he was total crap!!!
I’d take Devlin or McElroy in the 3rd or 4th rounds, since both ran pro-style offenses and McElroy ran a WCO style system that he excels in!!

by NorCalFaithful on Jan 27, 2011 12:19 PM PST reply actions

Devlin runs the spread option.

McElroy’s system hides the fact that his humerus, radius, and ulna have been surgically replaced by overcooked linguini.

by Ougadas on Jan 27, 2011 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

why do people keep saying devlin ran a pro style offense? In his highlights I only see the spread...

"The year we beat Miami in the Super Bowl, ... do you know how many defensive linemen were in our rotation? Nine, and we used them all quite a bit. We just wore the Dolphins out."

Same in full games..

It’s not just a package they run sometimes.. it’s the whole offense.

Did you see how dominant Stanford's D was.

It wasn’t even fair. Locker got sacked multiple times on the drop back.

How is that an argument for Devlin?

He never had to play a good defense?

It's Whore-baugh, remember?

by bignerd on Jan 27, 2011 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

If they draft a WR, it should be Julio Jones or AJ Green in the 1st round!!! It stops there at WR. No other WR is worthy of the # 1 pick, but 2nd thru the 4th rounds should be fine!!! I think they should draft Peterson or Prince, but there is something else to think about too!!! What if we sign Asomoaha the former Raider CB and then pick Peterson as well? Move Clements to Safety so he dont get torched no more by slow ass recievers!!! What do you think about that senerio? Sounds Great to me!!! We can trade for a QB and draft one or free agengy either way i think we will be fine there!!! How about Alex Smith coming back?? With an offensive minded coach Like Peterson at Utah…Smith could flourish!!!!
