49ers 2011 NFL Draft Picks And What Compensatory Pick(s) To Expect
This is more for your general informational than anything else, but it is a useful page to potentially bookmark as we move towards the 2011 NFL Draft. Here are the 49ers' current 2011 draft picks. I'm posting it now because the Jets-Steelers game actually impacted the seventh round draft choice the 49ers acquired from Detroit for Shaun Hill.
| Round | Pick | Overall | How aquired? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7 | 7 | 49ers Pick |
| 2 | 13 | 45 | 49ers Pick |
| 3 | 12 | 76 | 49ers Pick |
| 4 | 11 | TBD | 49ers Pick |
| 4 | 18 | TBD | From San Diego in draft day trade last year |
| 5 | 10 | TBD | 49ers Pick |
| 6 | 9 | TBD | 49ers Pick |
| 6 | 25 | TBD | From Seattle for Kentwan Balmer |
| 7 | 8 | TBD | 49ers pick |
| 7 | 30 | TBD | From Detroit for Shaun Hill (Jets originally) |
The 49ers will also potentially end up with a compensatory pick in the upcoming draft. Maiocco discussed this a couple weeks ago and had this to say:
By my calculations, the 49ers might get an additional seventh-round pick based on free-agent losses of receiver Arnaz Battle (Pittsburgh) and tackle Tony Pashos (Cleveland) and just one gain, quarterback David Carr.
Although the 49ers cannot deal players for picks at this point, a trade is certainly a possibility. If the right player isn't going to be available at No. 7 it's entirely possible the team could attempt to move up or down with picks. As we move along this offseason I'll probably ask this question every couple of weeks, potentially picking up steam as we get closer to the draft and more information becomes available.
Although we'll be discussing the entire draft over the coming three months, the first round is where people are quick to focus. We've begun some discussion on that pick and it will only continue in the coming months. Predictions right now probably have little value three months from now since so much can and will change, particularly as free agency does or does not play out. However, it will be interesting to see how opinions change or stay the same when April comes around.

Im hoping
if the Niners can’t get Peterson or Green at 7 they should trade down, but I would not be surprised if we traded up for a guy Haubaugh really likes. With those two players I don’t think we can lose either way.

I am hoping dallas will trade with us if peterson is there.
I am hoping they will give us their first rounder and second round picker for peterson.
3 picks in top 45 then.

Peterson truly is
a talent that does not come around very often. He is super rare. I don’t seem him making it past the Bills even if CB isn’t a huge concern for them. When a player like him comes a long it is worth it to forgo an absolute need.
Travis LaBoy?
I wonder if Maiocco is including him in his calcs
he might have been cut, maybe that affects it.

how does claiming a player off waivers
play into the compensatory picks? Does it? what about restricted free agents? Just trying to figure out whether troy smith or gibbson additions would have any effect on the count.
I don't think
waiver pick ups count… I don’t recall any players that were cut or who weren’t on a team when grabbed counting towards compensation in the past…
I’m fairly certain that the picks are given to level the playing field when unrestricted and restricted free agents leave teams and they are the only factors…
So, it seems to be determined on some secret formula...
Only specific free agents count toward the formula, and it’s based on the player’s signing salary, playing time and postseason…
Since LaBoy and T. Smith both had tiny contracts and little playing time i don’t think they’ll count, and Gibson only played in the season finale so we’ll be fine there…
Honestly, I think since Arnaz Battle is on a super bowl team and Shaun Hill started more than half the games for Detroit this season that we might get a 6th rounder… I mean, it’s not like Carr did much here, and his contract is comparable to Hill’s…
I may be hoping for too much, but it makes sense to me… Can’t trade the pick anyway, so 6th is better than 7th…
thanks for the explanation
makes me laugh that Battle is going to the superbowl. I hope he gets the opportunity to drop a punt for the steelers. The compensatory pick might be the highlight of his career, certainly his best achievment as a 49er.

well if the "right" player isnt available
you defenitely trade down at least a few spots. add an extra pick or two.
for example, if harbaugh and balke want to upgrade the CB spot but peterson is gone and they arent sold on amukamara they might trade down and take 2 other CB’s (williams, smith, harris, house, etc) for teh about same money if they wanted to.
by trading down they just completely revamped the secondary and still have high draft picks to go after a QB, LB, DE, etc….

and if that did happen
id target the vikings as the team to trade with. swapping the 7th for 12th pick could net us a 2nd or more likely a 3rd and 4th too.

ehhh
There’s no QB really worth wasting the 7th on that I see. Especially considering how many strong veterans are available right now. Narrow that down to Cb, OLB, and Wr. personally i’d even take out OLB. We proved that this group can be a great run stopper and we’re now an average pass rushing team. I love the idea of trading with a team like Dallas and grabbing Julio jones or trading up for peterson.
I should have said olb/de
Couple of good pass rushers there especially in the db are gone
wait til next year!
We don't have much need at WR, and I agree with the QB comment as well.
Josh Morgan, Crabtree and Ginn are all decent receivers. They’re all pretty young and have kinks to work out (drops, routes, etc), but nothing that a new draft pick wouldn’t have either. We certainly shouldn’t waste our 7th on another WR. Also, if Gabbert is gone, which he likely will be, there’s no QB to draft (I personally really like Mallet, but I’m in the minority). That leaves OLB and CB, and our linebacker corps has done a very good job of stopping the run. Which leaves just CB. There’s really not much of an argument here, I think.
In summary:
Defense – We have an up-and-coming O-line, an above average front-7, a young, athletic strong safety and a decent free safety. An obvious glaring need at CB. In later rounds, I would build up our depth at DE and pick up an OLB.
Offense – Decent to good WRs, excellent HB with decent backup, world-class TE group (I have a man-crush on Walker, the only receiver who made Alex Smith look good), and a young and improving O-line. Blank on QB. Not very many needs on offense, we just need somebody to coach this young talent up.
And now we have a coach who’s not an idiot. Let’s win some games, people.
ginn had very little yards receiving last year
I would not say that he is a decent receiver. morgans contract is going to be up and he needs to be upgraded anyways. probably not going to be the first round pick on wr but 2nd round on niners will be game for wr. they have been interviewed about three wrs that have been ranked 4-6 round picks.
and
vernon davis made alex smith look good. walker was not one of alex’s favorite targets.
look at the discrepancy in receiving yards walker had between troy smith and alex smith.
I would rate walker as a better receiver though then josh morgan.

If the league ends up not extending the CBA before the draft
With the possibility of Clements leaving, we likely wouldn’t have much choice other than to draft Peterson or Amukamara if one of them falls to us. I don’t think we pass up the chance to pick up one of the two best CB’s in the draft. If the CBA does end up being extended and we have enough time to manage to pick up somebody through FA, only then would I think we could trade down to later in the 1st, possibly pick up a QB first and look for a CB in the 2nd and/or 3rd rds.
Don't mind me, I'm on a roller coaster. . .

BTW
Does anyone know, if the CBA does get extended, will it end up being another uncapped year??

We'll definately get a need at no. 7
Bet it Peterson or Prince or one of top DL’s it’s all goodl.

i dont know much about draft order
but shouldn’t we have 7th pick in every round?
teams with the same record cycle
since about 6 other teams finished with a 6-10 record our pick # differs in every round
the lack of a cba
Makes this a nightmare for the niners, especially at qb. The longer they go without an agreement, the more likely it is that they’ll have to draft a qb at #7, or go with somebody on the roster.
twilight zone music . . . .
. . . Alex Smith comes back to the 49ers due to the CBA lockout
If there's no CBA
One of two things will likely happen. Either the current CBA gets extended, the season will be played and both sides continue to work on an agreementand. At that point, we likely get a QB through a combination of FA, trade and/or draft. Otherwise, there is a lockout and it doesn’t matter how soon we draft a QB, no one will be playing anyway and we can’t pick one up by FA/trade. But either way, we can still get someone decent enough through the draft even if it’s not at #7.

i still shake my head
when we traded Shaun Hill for a 7th round? First off, this guy would of played instead of Smith squared this season. And a trade for a 7th round?! a 7th!? u got to be kidding me. Should of have been at least a 5th!
hey Fooch
where did you hear that the pick came from the Jets?
i can’t find a source for that, and every 7-round mock i have seen is giving us the Lions own 7th round pick.
one of them even claims the Lions had already traded the Jets 7th rounder to Atlanta before the Shaun Hill trade went down.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I'm normally a huge fan of trading down and getting extra draft picks in the 3rd or 4th rounds,
especially when a team is rebuilding. But this time around, especially with such a high pick, I say we upgrade that secondary, then trade up for a QB. We don’t have very many glaring weaknesses, but CB and QB are huge. A couple good picks early could make a drastic difference next season.
I think that's exactly right
Very little chance that all the picks make our roster this year as they did last year.
wait til next year!
I think most of them will.
there probably will only be 8 lineman next year instead of nine and sims, wragge and heitman could all not be back next year. that is two roster spots there.
plus two qb spots, will james
that is five players right there.
it will add up qucik

So frickin what?
One extra 6th and 7th round pick.
Could’ve had the 5th overall pick, a hell of a lot more valuable then these end of the draft picks, with a loss to the Cardinals.
D train to Bensonhurst Brooklyn BABEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nobody wants your rainclouds, sir.
We manhandled the Cards, which was fun to watch. I’ll take good entertainment and a jolly mood over two spots on a draft board any day. That’s what fandom is all about. Take off your grumpy-pants and let it all hang out. Let’s enjoy the ride this off-season.

If the two DBs (Prince and Peterson) are selected early (which on some mocks they are), I’d love to trade down a few spots to get an extra pick or two. Say what you want about the Pats, but they do this to perfection and it’s worked out quite well for them with a lot of their picks.
I certainly don’t think that there is anyone worth trading up for even though we do need a DB, it certainly isn’t worth losing a another high draft pick to obtain.
Package both sevenths together and a future seventh for a 5th rounder this year. I would trade completely out of the seventh and if we get a comp pick, then great, if not, then I’d rather get another 5th if possible.
So we would have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, two 4th’s, two 5th’s, and two 6th’s, with a possible comp 7th. And if Peterson is not there when we pick in the first, then trade back that 1st and pick up another mid-rounder. Patriots style.
If we trade back the first, we could have a late first, a 2nd, and then 2 picks each round for the rest of the draft.
Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will be judged by only one thing -- the result. -Lombardi
that doesnt sound bad either
I just tired of everyone wanting the quick fix by trading away draft picks to get players…the way to build a good team is to draft well. Picking up a few FA’s isnt bad, but the draft is where things happen for the future!
