Matt Maiocco tweeted yesterday that NFL sources told him former Seattle wide receiver Bobby Engram was under consideration for a position on Jim Harbaugh's staff. Today the confirmation came from the 49ers that Engram has indeed been hired as an Offensive Assistant.
Engram spent time in more places than just Seattle in his 14-year career, but while a Seahawk he learned the West Coast Offense under former 49ers coach and Walsh-Tree guy: Mike Holmgren. Engram spent eight seasons in Seattle and produced 399 receptions for 4,859 yards and 18 touchdowns during that span.
Engram had his best season statistically in 2007 when he finished with over 1,100 yards. He was a three-time All American at Penn State in college and finished as the school's all-time leader in receptions (167), receiving yards (3,026) and receiving touchdowns (31).
Considering that Engram was out of football in 2010, I wonder how much, if anything he can tell the 49ers about Seattle...especially now that Pete Carroll is there and things have surely changed. Still, it seems like another solid hire by Harbaugh. Engram was a guy who couldn't always produce, but played a long time and was always working hard. Those type of guys generally make good coaches.
Eric Branch had a great line on his blog regarding Engram, a former Seahawk, coming to the 49ers:
A Seahawk coming to the 49ers? Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?
