The San Francisco 49ers continue their whirlwind romance from afar with Jim Harbaugh with it now midway through the first full day Harbaugh can be comfortable making a change. CSN Bay Area has the latest bit of news, which is indicating the 49ers are willing to fork over some serious personnel power in their efforts to woo Jim Harbaugh. The normal power structure has the head coach handling 53-man roster issues and the GM handling the offseason roster additions and subtractions that provide the 80 or so players that come to camp.
We've had a lot of reports about the comfort level Jim Harbaugh might or might not have with potential GM Trent Baalke, and how Mike Lombardi might be the guy he wants. If Harbaugh is going to get more power, it seems like a Baalke would make more sense as an existing York guy instead of bringing in an outsider. I'd imagine most people are resigned to the fact that Trent Baalke seems likely to be the guy hired in short order. Maiocco tweeted his hunch is it'll happen by the end of the day.
Whatever the case may be, what do folks think about giving a sizable chunk of power to a new head coach? The NFL is filled with stories of coaches handling GM work and struggling mightily. Our very own Mike Nolan fits into this category. I suppose a lot of it depends on what Baalke's role would be in the GM position. We heard all about the trigger between Scot McCloughan and Mike Nolan. Are we headed back for that kind of scenario? Nolan eventually lost a lot of his power when he did not find success so I'd imagine Harbaugh would be the guy to start. It's just a matter of how long he'd survive in that dual role.
