49ers Make It Official: Name Trent Baalke General Manager

The 49ers went and made the announcement official. From the official 49er website/press release comes this information:

"Trent has done an exceptional job in his role as Vice President of Player Personnel and throughout his tenure with the 49ers," said 49ers President & CEO Jed York.  "I have had the benefit of watching Trent closely in the recent months and have been very impressed with his knowledge and leadership. I am confident that Trent will find the 49ers an excellent head coach who will lead us to great success in the coming years."

"I would like to thank Jed York and the York family for this tremendous opportunity," said Baalke. "It is an honor to be named the General Manager of the San Francisco 49ers, a franchise with a history filled by some of the game's greatest players, coaches and executives. I look at this role as one of great responsibility - to not only the history of the franchise, but also to the 49ers Faithful. My entire focus is now dedicated to finding the next head coach of the 49ers."

Also from the press release:

Baalke, 46, enters his seventh season with the 49ers and 14th in the National Football League. Baalke most recently served as the 49ers Vice President of Player Personnel, overseeing all aspects of player personnel.

Over the last nine months, Baalke was responsible for all player acquisitions. His first order of business was orchestrating a trade with the Miami Dolphins for WR Ted Ginn Jr. He then commanded the 49ers draft process for the first time. All eight of the 49ers 2010 selections made the active roster, including first rounders T Anthony Davis and G Mike Iupati, who each started every game on the offensive line last season. Baalke also played a role in extending the contracts of Pro Bowlers LB Patrick Willis and TEVernon Davis and signing veteran RB Brian Westbrook.

Prior to his promotion to Vice President of Player Personnel, Baalke was the 49ers Director of Player Personnel from 2008-09, where he oversaw both the college and pro personnel departments. He first joined the franchise in 2005 as the team's Western Region Scout, a position he held through 2007.

Baalke spent four years on the Washington Redskins scouting staff, serving as the College Scouting Coordinator in his final season. From 2001 to 2003, he served as Washington's National Scout and traveled throughout the country in search of rising talent. Before joining the Redskins, Baalke spent three seasons (1998-2000) as a scout with the New York Jets.

From 1990 to 1995, Baalke held the position of defensive line/strength and conditioning coach at South Dakota State. In that role, he helped promote players such as former Pro Bowl guard Adam Timmerman and current NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri to NFL scouts. Baalke then spent time as the athletic director at Shanley High School in Fargo, ND, before moving on to the Jets.

Baalke began his coaching career as a graduate assistant defensive line coach at North Dakota State, in 1989. The team finished with a 14-0 record and a Division II National Championship.

BAALKE'S NFL BACKGROUND

YEARS NFL BACKGROUND
2011 General Manager, San Francisco 49ers
2010 Vice President of Player Personnel, San Francisco 49ers
2008-2009 Director of Player Personnel, San Francisco 49ers
2005-2007 Regional Scout, San Francisco 49ers
2004 College Scouting Coordinator, Washington Redskins
2001-2003 National Scout, Washington Redskins
1998-2000 Personnel Scout, New York Jets

Baalke clearly has lots of experience as a personnel guy, and I think he did a pretty good job in last year's draft. the next move is to get a HC. Interviews have been announced with Hue Jackson (OC of the Raiders), and Perry Fewell (DC of the Giants). It's no secret that the primary candidate is Jim Harbaugh, who was rumored to be in strong contention for that job. It was rumored that Rich Rodriguez would be fired from Michigan with the presumption that Harbaugh would take over, but that was walked back.

Jason LaConfora reports that the 49ers fully intend to have the new HC chosen by this Friday.

Brief yet telling.

A post that can stand the test of time. A post that is as true today as it will be 40 years from now. Maybe by then this whole internet craze will pass…

I'm with you on this one

The true need is the HC, and i love Harbaugh for that job. Baalke is no stud (yet) or dud (yet) but I’m willing to see what he can do. Is he my first choice? Not really, but if I can have my first choice anywhere I want it to be in the HC in Harbaugh.

In the blowout win over USC, Harbaugh went for 2 to try to make it a round 50 points.

He stops his speech in shock, and gingerly leads him team out to the game. End result, a blowout loss to the Saints. :)

Harbaugh has five kids, family in California, and the current roster sets up nicely for his approach...

… so the only way this screws up at this point is if the ‘niners short him. They need to make this happen, draft a QB, then pick up a FA QB who can win games for the next two or three years while Harbaugh coaches up the rookie. Oh yeah, and add a lock-down CB – do all that and we’re on our way… :)

I haven’t read enough about him either way, though he feels like a fast-track hire. Pedigree says scout which is nice. Have the draft results been posted, those from the Redskins during his tenure. As long as he listens to what the coach has in mind, seems alright.

Some more substantiated info
The 49ers have promoted VP of Player Personnel Trent Baalke to the newly created GM position.
NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reportedly turned down an offer to work under Baalke in a lower position. CEO Jed York put a rush on the decision because Baalke will be needed to interview head coaching candidates, specifically Jim Harbaugh and Hue Jackson, on Wednesday. Per the San Jose Mercury News, Harbaugh remains the heavy favorite and he has “signed off” on Baalke as general manager. Barring a last-minute surprise, Harbaugh is expected to be named head coach on Wednesday or Thursday.

Well two, but one is a high school friend.

The other I choose to be friends with, he lives in AZ, is a really intelligent, funny guy, but when he gets around other people he is totally different person and seriously abrasive. He gets a kick out of pissing people off. I never understood it. Doesn’t act like that to me at all, not even in the slightest, just when he is out with others. Like he is putting on some kind of show or something.

About four or five times, I’ve seen someone offer twenty, and he’ll say “No … look, I’ll give you eighty for that.” Etc.

Rick on Pawn Stars did that with a brooch, too. Obviously he is much more concerned with profit, but when it really comes down to screwing honest people, he avoids it. Lady wanted a grand or something, he offered 15.

it's a very loose environment on the set. much of what you see is off the cuff.

the segments are structured and built around specific topics, but much/most of what you hear within the segments is really these guys riffing. They write down some of the better stuff/lines ahead of time, but honestly, who needs to write when all you have to do is let Irvin start rolling….! that’s usually worth a segment of responses all on its own. Rich is the glue… he’s so smooth, whenever they start to wander or drift, he moves them back to the topic without anyone noticing what he’s doing. Gifted guy. Great show. Not gunna get an argument with me

It is stupid. I am getting tired of these types of things in general. There is tons of “minorities” in the NFL today with players and coaches. I think as a society we need to start moving past these sorts of things. Just to add to the Rooney Rule issue, if an organization has their guy in mind, do you really think interviewing another guy is going to do anything for anyone? I get how maybe initially it would motivate minority candidates to attempt to get hired and get the ball moving, but I think we are passed that now. Just my two cents anyway.

My best guess

The 49ers and Raiders had a little side deal. The 49ers needed Rooney Rule compliance and the Raiders needed a public excuse to dump Cable. Raiders grant the 49ers access to interview Hue Jackson allowing the Raiders to claim there is market for his service thus a leg to stand on for dumping Cable and instantly hiring Jackson, something Al Davis wanted to do all along.

though i don’t get it since it seems to me that Cable fits their image perfectly

by smileyman on Jan 4, 2011 9:51 PM PST up reply actions

Hue Jackson fits Al Davis perfecting

He’s an offensive guy. His specialty has been tailoring effective offenses based on available talent which allows Al to continue to pick the groceries while Jackson makes it work. The other big sell for Davis is Jackson would be a 1st time HC, so his price tag is within Al’s price range.

Digital Garbage

by bignerd on Jan 4, 2011 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

Because they're at the same stage the Niners were after last season

8-8 based mostly on dominating an average division, with enough close losses to convince everyone that the next season will be better. When the Oakland schedule goes from NFCW to NFC North, a lower draft pick and the pressure of expectations, they were likely to backslide under Cable to 6-10. They may end up doing this anyway, but Cable is still better as an OL coach than HC.

though i agree...

guys like billick and gruden get a reputation re QBs that’s a little unwarranted, i’d say the pattern is pretty clear. when these guys get their hands on old, decrepit QBs, and put them into their WCO, they turn them into good/great QBs. however, they’re totally inept at taking a youngster, and molding him into a good/great QB. for example,

good to great performances by old QBs under billick: b johnson, cunningham, dilfer, mcnair
garbage performances by young QBs under billick: boller

good to great performances by old QBs under gruden: b johnson, gannon, garcia
garbage performances by young QBs under gruden: simms, gradkowski

the interesting thing...

about downtown miami is that the stone cold ghetto is literally blocks away from the financial district. the past 5 years have seen a real revitalization of downtown (and lebron coming here has helped even more), so you probably wouldn’t have the same experience today. one of the bars/clubs i go to is within eyeshot of the ghetto, and all the locals i come in contact with just want a dollar or so to point me towards an available parking spot along the street. never had any issues whatsoever despite being there practically every friday night.

Funny story

My dad and a friend were in Miami for Superbowl 29 for the Niners v. Chargers and decided to go drinking the first night in town. Around 3 a.m. they decide to call it a night and have a cab take them to their hotel which was a little ways outside of the “city”. As fate would have it, the cab gets in an accident a block or so away from a Denny’s.

At this point my father and his friend are mildly innebriated, it’s dark, they don’t know the city, and it’s their first night in town. In their blissful state they decide to eat at Denny’s while they wait for another cab, knowing full well it’s Superbowl weekend and it’s going to take longer than usual.

So two affluent, white as snow gentlemen walk into this Denny’s carrying their luggage as they have yet to make it to their hotel. As my dad describes it, they were the only people there of, uh, lighter skin complexion. This isn’t a big deal as this has happened to me before and my dad is far from bigoted, but the manager immediately approaches them and instructs them to NOT leave his side. My dad informs the manager he would just like to wait outside for his cab and the manager tells him that it is not a good idea to go outside. Eventually the cab shows and my dad and his companion make it to the hotel without incident.

The next morning at breakfast my dad has a casual conversation with a waitress who brings up a double-homicide that happened in the area in the early part of the morning at a local restaurant. Curious, my dad investigates further and finds out it was at that same Denny’s. The news report says the shooting occurred around 4:30; 15 minutes after my dad had left.

by Blowfish on Jan 4, 2011 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

because...

there’s a lot of ghetto in south florida…because south florida is like a 200 sq mi metropolitan area. that’s a lot of land area with available ghetto space. incidentally, the ghetto near the stadium is like amateur hour ghetto compared to the big league ghetto near downtown. if you ever watch “first 48” on A&E, pretty much all of their homicides occur within about 5 miles of my apartment.

by (Florida) Danny Tuccitto on Jan 4, 2011 11:13 PM PST up reply actions

@Florida Danny

I don’t believe it was near the stadium unless the stadium is described as outside the “city”. The way my dad describes it, they were outside the “heart” of the city but still in what most people consider the city of Miami. A Reno/Sparks thing for you Northern Nevadans or even a SF/Oakland type thing, just considered the whole area/city.

by JSing on Jan 4, 2011 11:22 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

right...

the stadium is actually in the county line between dade (where miami is) and broward (where fort lauderdale is). it’s also well to the west of the coast. that area (NW dade/SW broward) is reasonably ghetto, but nothing like the ghetto on the outskirts of downtown miami, which is probably about 20-30 minutes SW of the stadium. SF/OAK or LA/Anaheim is definitely a proper way to think about how people say “miami” when they really mean “south florida” in the sense that where they’re talking about is not technically in miami…and in the case of the stadium, not even in the same county.

by (Florida) Danny Tuccitto on Jan 4, 2011 11:28 PM PST up reply actions

Mostly outsider, here.

I think I’ve picked up from comments over time that most of y’all aren’t that upset with the idea of Baalke as GM. I tend to agree — he’s not an entirely proven commodity, but every GM has to get the job one time with no prior GM experience. The guy appears to have a decent grip on personnel evaluation, and who else were you gonna land?

As for the effusive love for Harbaugh — clearly, he’s a terrific college coach. This is not a guarantee of NFL success, but it doesn’t hurt. You do realize that getting Harbaugh does NOT mean you get Luck, don’t you? You finished a little too high for that.

by bob47 on Jan 4, 2011 10:27 PM PST reply actions

Yeah

The thought is, that he can mold a mid to late round QB. Like Luck who was not a top prospect. Thats exactly what we need.

No Luck

Bob couldn’t agree more, Luck is the best QB to come into the NFL since Peyton, so Carolina will not do anything that stupid.

No guarantee that Billick, Gruden or any of them make this team much better. I love Harbaugh’s fire, that you can just feel emitting from him when he is on the sidelines. His absolutely need to win and kick serious butt is contagious. I think he can bring that to the 49ers. Neither Jed or Baalke will tell him what to do. If they try, he will give them that look and oh boy. He is also an excellent coach for a QB. He will find the best one for our team and draft one that he can mold.

by The Sear on Jan 4, 2011 10:40 PM PST up reply actions

Harbaugh Mancrush

I finally have to admit it. There is something about this guy’s competitive fire, almost maniacal looks he gets, and just will to kick people’s asses into the next county that I have a mancrush on. How his team came out after halftime last night and just cremated Va Tech(they never had a chance), was beautiful to see.

I don’t care who the GM is, get this guy to be our coach.

Zero Chance

First of all, there is zero chance that if Luck comes out the Panthers would trade down or pass on him. Their fans would KILL them no matter how many draft picks and rookies they got in the trade. Luck has more star power at the moment than anyone since Peyton Manning.

Second of all, I wouldn’t give up 4 or 5 high draft picks over 2 years to get him, which is what it would take. Because if we get Harbaugh I really do think he can maximize the talent of any QB we get. I can think of lots of rookie or young QBs he could turn into somethng special: Gabbert, Vince Young, maybe even Troy Smith. I’d rather try that than give up our future for one guy.

If we don’t get Luck and Locker/Gabbert etc… falls to the mid-late 20s, or even any other player we are really targetign (Cameron Jordan) falls i could easily see the 49ers trading back into the 1st ala the Willis/Staley draft

I hear Eddy D.

saying that there was too many chiefs at the niners and not enough indians.

Is that going to change now that Baalke is officially the GM?

Or is Eddy D. wrong?

maybe Harbaugh will fix all that….

Logical Decision

Interesting to finally hear that Jed hired from within the organization. I don’t mind having Trent Baalke as the GM, but then again he’s not my first choice either. I would have preferred for Jed to make the big move and send a statement to the fan base that they are going for a complete overhaul. On the other hand, these are the Yorks we’re talking about so we shouldn’t expect huge risks-taking moves like that. Trent Baalke seems to be the logical decision, based on the reports that Jim Harbaugh has stated he has no preference between Baalke and Lombardi. That only made Jed’s decision so much simpler. Unfortunately, instead of sending a strong message to the fan base of establishing a new beginning and starting with a clean slate, this move clearly sends the message that Mike Singletary is the one to blame for the teams shortcomings. Reports quoting Vernon Davis saying that the team was scared of playing under Singletary, as they were more concerned about being punished as opposed to enjoying the game and making plays.

Hopefully Trent will do a good job. He’s put in his years of work and he’s successfully seen the way a franchise shouldn’t be run. The only issue is that he really is just unproven to this point, so we don’t know how much potential he can have and we don’t know how detrimental he can be. I would have loved to have seen Lombardi hired for the short term, and to have Baalke work under his tenure for a few years. This would have brought the outsider’s view implemented into the teams strategy, and Baalke could have learned and developed to take over the responsibilities in the near future. Baalke should have been a successor to Lombardi, but now he has to start fresh on his own without an experienced mentor to guide him.

Task one. Get Harbaugh ASAP.

Why is our off-season more exciting than our regular season?!

Harbaugh or Bust

by Blowfish on Jan 4, 2011 11:35 PM PST up reply actions

at this point I believe it's about the $ and control

which means now we’ll find out if Eddie D is really back in the mix and being given a voice in the organization. I don’t think John York would ever approve the kind of money we’re going to hear they committed to Harbaugh, if they get him. Erickson, Nolan and Singletary were, among other things, relatively cheap hires. Harbaugh will be in a different league entirely. If it’s true that Jed is signaling that money won’t be an obstacle, as a few reports have claimed, then that tells me Jed really is being given authority over the team, and borrowing a page from Uncle Eddie’s playbook. Anybody remember Eddie and Policy ever blowing a signing over money? ’Niner players in the 80s and 90s always talked about how Eddie treated them like kings – never spared a dime – from giving them their own rooms on road trips, to their own row on chartered jets to games, to lavish celebrations and gifts… the players and coaches knew the owners valued them, and returned that respect with commitment on the field… John York brags to friends about cost efficiencies. Jed… listen to your uncle…. you gotta spend money to make money in entertainment…. trust your gut, open your wallet, and know that you will be rewarded for it.

If Harbaugh sells the final touches on a stadium deal than Harbaugh pays for himself 50 times over. After the new CBA the Yorks needs to sell the naming rights and at least show a percentage of their fan base will go along with the PSL’s to get the loan. After Singletary took a hot dump on their season/product they had to do something more drastic.

Goodnight NN

Have to leave on this most epic of notes

The 49ers appeared to have sealed the Raiders coach (Cable) fait today when they asked for, and received permission to speak to Jackson. If there was any doubt which NFL teak rules the Bay, no need to look any further. Hours after we get permission to interview Jackson, they fire Cable to keep Jackson. The Faiders are still the step-sisters tied to the basement of the Bay. Gotta love it!!

I don’t think the 49ers do. Like I said above the Raiders probably pimped out Jackson to show Cable the door ASAP. Jackson is probably more than happy to comply. He only has to wait a few more hours to get hired instead of waiting for this long stare down with Cable to end.

Digital Garbage

by bignerd on Jan 4, 2011 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

That could be true too

i guess it is all speculation right now. It could benefit the 49ers do, if indeed they are able to interview Jackson this morning and then turn their total focus to Harb.

I think the Raiders are in complete disarray in their front office. It makes no sense to fire a coach immediately after their most successfull season in years, absolutely no sense.

I would disagree

This is a good move for the Raiders. Cable took them as far as he could. Jackson played a huge role in their turn around this season and they cannot afford to lose him.

Agree to disagree

i think that you reward the head coach that brought you back from the ashes after the fiasco of the previous seasons. I do agree that Jackson will be a real good head coach, and it would be difficult to lose him. However, Cable was the Head Coach and the Raiders were a couple plays away from winning the division.

Not that I want to see it dragged out any further...

But I wonder what a good developer of QB’s and good overall coach like Harbaugh could do with Alex Smith. I’m not saying I have confidence in Smith as much as I have confidence in Harbaugh. I think he could get so much more out of Smith. Which makes me feel good about find someone serviceable until we find/develop our QBOTF via the draft.

I Think the 49ers and Smith

have signed their divorce papers and are ready to move on. He can’t be with the 49ers next season, it just won’t work. I do wish him the best, and hope he succeeds in his next NFL stop.

Depending...

… on how much Belichick value’s Smith’s “intelligence”, I can see him landing in New England. With Tom Brady the undisputed starting QB, Smith can take time to learn behind him for a few years, and move on somewhere else.

by agchee on Jan 5, 2011 12:19 AM PST up reply actions

Wait...

Wasn’t the whole point to bring in a GM with a strong vision and give him total control over coach hiring and football operations?

You know… admit that the way we have been running this franchise for the better part of a decade has been incompetent and dysfunctional?

Yet we keep the guy who was basically our GM last year, just with a different title, and according to the insiders we are willing to give a large amount of control to Harbaugh, and even had him “sign off” on our GM choice…

Baalke will be the next scapegoat for this dysfunctional organization.

When Harbaugh turns out not to be the savior and the rookie QB we draft turns out to be more J.P. Losman than Matt Ryan and we suck next year as well… it will be Baalke’s head on a platter instead of Harbaughs.

by Ougadas on Jan 5, 2011 2:21 AM PST reply actions

Let's keep it real..................

I don’t think anyone would argue that he did a hell of a job last year, with the draft and signings of critical players.

However, he doesn’t have a long track record of success, which is what I was hoping to get not only in a GM, but a coach. Holmgrem was at the top of the wish list, with the guy from New Englad not far behind.
