The Jim Harbaugh Saga Continues
I'm running out of things to write, honestly. We can't really post things other than the Jim Harbaugh or general head coaching news because frankly, the posts are ignored, so we will just continue our present discussions in this new thread!
The very latest is that the Dolphins officials are still here in the Bay Area, and are prepared to go beyond anything in the NFL salary-wise. The Dolphins still have Tony Sparano, and they still have to comply with the Rooney Rule. It is possible that they interview Hue Jackson while they are in the Bay Area. The rumored numbers are north of seven million right now, and it's apparent that the 49ers cannot approach such an offer. Andrew Luck has stated that he will be staying at Stanford and they re-emerge as a possibly place for Harbaugh in 2011.
From a completely unbiased standpoint, I feel like Mr. Steve Ross is kind of a douchebag, and I've had several Miami fans agree with me on that front - the way this is all being conducted. As to the 49ers and their declaration of money not being an object - it was a silly thing for Jed to say and it won't be the last time he puts his foot in his mouth. The fact is that regardless, this is far too much money to pay.
For now, let's get discussion going here. Site decorum is off for another thread, but other site rules regarding personal attacks and the like are still disallowed. If you need to ask whether or not you can say something in this thread, you can send me an email if you'd like - but more than likely you should just not say it. Posting .gif images are not allowed in this thread.

I'm honoured.
But yeah as someone said on the previous thread, the Dolphins should have draft-picks taken away from them.

Schefter and Canfora are more concerned with the Cowboys and the playoffs.

Bet good old Jed didn't think
Money would approach 7 million… I guess the reasoning for his money not an issue statement…
I’m kind of getting a little tired of this drawn out deal… Wont be as pissed as I was yesterday if we don’t get him..
Well, since Denise earned a reputation for being cheap -
- obviously, some people were afraid that Jed wouldn’t be willing to spend reasonably.
That we was willing to give $5m/yr to an unproven guy suggests that cheapness wasn’t an issue here.
Too bad it wasn’t enough.
Foolishness
This whole fiasco has been foolish for the very beginning. Leaking damning stories to the press about your own, existing coach. Making winning declaration via text to reporters. Firing the coach the second he left the locker room than declaring:
a) An all out GM search when it was never the intent
b) The GM would pick the coach when Harbaugh was the target the entire time
c) Money is no object when they knew the minimum price would be $6 million per year and they were only going to offer up to $5 million.
Jed needs to fire himself from GM. Could not have made himself a bigger embarrassment, I think he surpassed his father … by a mile.

Nothing was wrong with firing Sing when Sing was fired.
Absolutely nothing. It was entirely appropriate.
Well Said
Once it became clear that Jed was going to hire another “yes man” and then function as the de-facto GM, all reasonable candidates didn’t want any part of it.
Its too bad. The Harbaughs and Grudens of the world do want to be the coach of the 49ers. They just don’t want to work for Jed York.

Hey ninj you know what steve ross makes the NFL looks n im kind of surprised
the commisioner hasn’t said anything but if miami interviews hue out here then hires harbaugh it really cheapens the ‘’rooney rule’‘even more than it already is makes it look like a slight loop hole that can be done on the fly or road. But the more you here people on espn n other sport shows they don’t feel that he could posibly be worth all this hype.Do i want him yea it wouldn’t hurt but life goes on theres other coaches out there with NFL exp we will be okay. But honestly in the end i see harbuagh spurring the dolphins n take our deal family comes first if he’s as good as he think he is the money will be there he’s still young, but if he takes it all and flame out in miami he could forget the NFL head coachig job for a minute he would have to go back to college n resurect a team from the dead so that would push his nextt NFL HC job back to about 6yrs from now.He would be alot richer but he would be just like nate the dictate where hot college coach takes the money n can’t win back with the babies let us big boys do what we do.

He’s been OC in Philly for last 6 yrs and one would think that he’s learned from being around Andy Reid. There’s no Bill Walsh or Vince Lombardi’s running around out there. So everyone’s going to have something that’s questionable. But he has experience in NFL, he was here for a stint, and he’s put together a good offensive scheme and team. Get him a compatible OC and DC…some of which may already be on staff…and let’s move on.

In December of 2010, Jed York stated that money was no object in regards to hire a new general manager and head coach, yet in January of 2011 he cheaply signed Trent Baalke as GM and was outbid by Miami for Jim Harbaugh. As a result of this blunder, Jed “Mommy can you please co-sign my check” York has become the laughing stock of the league and has plunged the 49er franchise into depths so deep that even capable Chilean miners would not be able escape.

What minority will interview with the Dolphins now?
Maybe the Dolphins make a secret deal with minority candidate for a coordinator position in return for submitting to a sham of a head-coaching interview. Otherwise, I pity the poor fool who plays their sucker in return for nothing.
Immediately ask
So 7.5 mil is on the table here right?
In light of how this played out for a fellow HC in Sporano
I’d certainly reject any interview. This would go beyond a sham.

One of their current coaches
Dolphins can interview any current coach in their organization. and they probably already have.
NO
They haven’t. People wouldn’t continually report that they haven’t complied yet if that were the case…
The only people reporting that are the people with the media
The Dolphins organization is very closed, they don’t disclose information alot.
'People'
That have connections with the NFL and would know if it has been reported to them…it is extremely naive to believe they have already complied.
I think they'd have to disclose firing their coach
They can’t comply with the Rooney rule if they still have a HC.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.
Yes, they do
Typical procedure is to report it to the NFL or to the organization that tracks compliance.
No more mock draft sig for now...

Multiple people, Schefter, LaConfora, have said that they haven’t notified the NFL of any compliance with the Rooney Rule.
we wouldn't get those draft picks.
they would just disappear.

I know any pain is good pain
money isn’t going to hurt them but a draft pick is.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Why do so many people here love the Rooney rule?
It’s a horrible racist rule, it’s an insult to black coaches, they might as well force teams to work out more white players that play RB, WR, CB…….
If there were no rules, there would be no decency like say...
actually letting go of a guy before openly looking for his replacement. We don’t have a rule for that because we all thought it was obvious. Maybe Ross should learn some manners
thats Cleveland's fault
But yes, there should be more honor in this world. I’m just razing the Dolphins cause my bro is a fan.
Where exactly
Do I say I agree or even have an opinion on the Rooney Rule?? I am simply stating the Dolphins have to comply and have yet to do so…
Personally I hate the Rooney Rule
but if we have to go through it, you do too, and I hope Goodell slaps the crap out of the Dolphins if they breach it.
No more mock draft sig for now...
I thought so too, with the whole token candidate thing
but Fooch (site moderator) brought up the point that Tony Dunghy is a supporter of the Rooney Rule, because it at the very least gives minority candidates experience in interviewing, which is a plus. (a foot in the door, so to speak.)
Interviewing experience can be quite valuable
The Rule exists because
There was a time not long ago, when minority candidates weren’t considered, weren’t interviewed, weren’t in the mix. So the rule is there to make sure that the good old boys have to at least give consideration. And by doing so, you provide exposure to those who might not have gotten attention otherwise, and yes they also get experience going through the process and interviewing. The rule is not racist, it exists to combat it. It may be that we’re close to being at a point where the way of thinking that created the need for the rule has dimmenished. But the rule still have value until the doors are wide open. Not there yet. There was a time when there we no minority qb’s in the league. Once given the opportunity to compete, that changed. There was a time when there were no minority coaches in the league. With time and opportunity that has now changed. The next frontier will be minorities in the FO and the same process may need to be followed.
So the rule is in place. Follow it.
by FunInTheSun on Jan 6, 2011 2:59 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Yah the rule isn't THAT dumb
but the enforcement is. The rule is basically a sham if the Seahawks absolutely know they want Pete Carroll and then hurry in Leslie Frazier for a sham interview.
For the Rooney Rule to be less of a “joke,” the NFL needs to enforce it better. The thing is, the underlying idea is impossible to enforce in earnest.
How can you “make” somebody seriously consider a minority when they wouldn’t otherwise? But such is the situation.
Dude...
…this is about the Dolphin’s shadiness, not the validity of the rule. Your owner and GM have behaved like total douches, and the whole league knows it. It’s absolutely shameful not just how they’ve flouted the rules, but how they’ve totally humiliated Tony Sparano in the process.
I hate Jeff Ireland the GM he is an asshole
But i don’t feel sorry for sporano, if you followed the dolphins you would know he is an asshole as well, when he benched Henne to save his own job, he fired the special team coordinator and basically blamed him for a loss. He is a micromanager. and no matter what happens he is still going to walk away with 3M and get a job offer from UCONN.
Commentary is not about the current use or historical need of the rule
Just that it exists and thus must be followed by all teams, even the one with a billionaire owner.

If the $8M number is correct
Then I would say no. Harbaugh is not worth it, especially since money is the driving force. If Jed matched it, Miami would go higher. This could continue until Harbaugh owns the franchise. There comes a point where you have to say no thanks, and going above $7M was that point.

No
I think Jed offered $5M and Harbaugh said, “What, get real!” And Jed said, “That’s real.” And Harbaugh said, “F you, York, you want real, try THIS. $8M.”
When you get low balled you get pissed. And loyalty goes out the window. Because you see you’re being F’d with.
How much did Walsh make?
Why does JH need more than that, until he wins more SBs than Walsh did I see no reason to as such.
So the "new GM"...

If Harbaugh didn't agree on anything, what was he doing for 6 hours? Twiddling his thumbs?
Seriously…if nothing had been hashed out, the meeting would have lasted 20 seconds.
“We’re prepared to offer you $4.5 million a year.”
“But Pete Carroll makes $6.5.”
“We can’t match that.”
“Well, thanks for your offer, I’ll keep that in mind.” (Departs.)
So what exactly were they talking about for the other 5 hours and 59 minutes?
You don't think there was a conversation about the plan for the team?
You do understand that job interviews aren’t just about the money, right?
In fact, in most job interviews, you don’t negotiate your deal. You might talk ballpark figures, and then the two sides seprate and if a job offer comes THEN you negotiate.
That’s how things generally work.
So they talked for six hours. And basically agreed that they would like to work together if they could come to a monetary agreement.
Which, it appears, they couldn’t.

it's saying...
that the going rate for a top-notch HC is less than the going rate for a top-notch QB. if jed were to bid up the price to $15M/yr for harbaugh, then that state of affairs would change…in the same way that the market for early 1st-rounders wasn’t ALWAYS higher than vets. it just ended up that way because buyers bid up the price of blue-chip rookies to the point that their salaries eclipsed vets on average.

Doesn't the fact that player money...
…is often NOT guaranteed also make this an apples-to-oranges comparison? If we pay Harbaugh $8 million for X years, we’re on the hook even if he’s a failure.
That's exactly what I was thinking... frigging Clements.
I think the Niners will go higher than 5 per year.
Maybe not, but I think some people (Kawakami) are jumping down Jed’s throat before negotiations are over. Real negotiations between businessmen don’t involve throwing a bunch of money at someone and begging PLEASE PLEASE sign with us, we LOVE you!
It’s not an easy process. The Harburglar is trying to get the best $ offer for sure, but he HAS to be looking at more than that. But, it’s pretty basic stuff for negotiator to entertain other offers in order to drive up the price. Maybe he just wants to get the 9ers up over Pete Carrol’s offer?

Agreed
I genuinely don’t understand why people are so loathe to pay NFL coaches, but not players. The NFL is a coaches’ league, vastly more than baseball or football. Why else has New England pretty much turned over its entire roster multiple times since their first Super Bowl season, save for Brady, and yet kept it humming so smoothly that their version of a “down” year during that entire stretch was 11-5. Sure, you could argue it’s all Brady, but I say it’s 93 percent Belichick. The fact that the team barely missed a beat the year Brady was out pretty well underscores the point. As far as I’m concerned, Belichick would be worth $20 million a year. Harbaugh? Eight mil? Why not?
Apologies to Vernon Davis, but how on earth does it make sense to put your absolute cap for a coach—including a wonderboy who is more coveted than any coach in memory—at approximately 50 percent less what your tight end is making? Was Bill Walsh 50 percent less valuable to the Niners than Russ Francis?
by BlueInTheFace on Jan 6, 2011 2:49 PM PST up reply actions
Why not?!
Because what if he isn’t? What if he’s Nick Saban, not Bill Belichik? You can’t really compare this to players because the money we pay to coaches is guaranteed.
Cause players play and risk injury
And their careers are shorter than that of a coach.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.
For me $6-6.5 million was that point...
The question will be how high did Jed in fact go. I’ll give all credit to Jed if he was willing to go above the reported $5 million. If not…

Holmgren – Wants to return to coaching but not at this time, he’s still the Cleveland Browns president
Gruden – Denied $7MM offer from Miami, what does that tell you?
Cowher – Also denied the Miami job, what does that also tell you?

I don't know what this so-called Rooney Rule is..
But it seems to me that if you already offered a legitimate amount to a guy in order to stop him from signing a deal, you have bypassed the whole interview process. After that kind of action, the interview process is over. At least we did a sham interview before offering the lowball deal to Harbaugh. Miami is basically spitting in the face of the Rooney rule.
I think this Rooney rule is obviously a sham and should be terminated immediately however. It doesn’t seem to actually influence anyones decisions anyway. I think this is another case of another team improperly interfering with the 49ers negotiations, which seems to happen every time we try to sign someone.
"Well that's something that we want. We want to be in the mix. We've been looking at this right now as compared to the NFL playoffs and I think it's probably the closest thing to what our situation is. It started last week with Oregon. We had to win, stay, and hunt for the Pac-10 championship and the same is true this week. We lose and we're out of that. We win and we're still in it. That's tough, that's like put up or shut up time like I said before. That's kind of our only mode."
- Jim Harbaugh
I agree
Jed needs to deliver and keep his mouth shut. As for the Rooney rule it is probably better than the affirmative action thing if I said that right. That rule if i u do not have minorities u get the heat from the feds. I just do not see any team playing the race card. I think any sports league takes talent over race. Maybe I am naive but I just do not see the hate and agree the Rooney rule should be removed. Of course this all leads to some great speculation over what teams are doing until they full fill the Rooney rule. Crazy.
Imagination is more important than knowledge. Less film more creativity please.
Anyone want to talk about Plan B?
Oh that’s right it already a failure. Plan B was Josh McDaniels because it’s who all the so-called GM candidates name dropped but he has already told the 49ers to pound sand.
Right now the 49ers look like someone who has lost $20k in Vegas and are still desperately chasing the money at the tables. Take my advice: walk away, call your wife with the terrible news and come home.
Since all their plans suck go with mine. Hire Ron Rivera, have him bring Billy Volek as a stop gap QB and go into 2011 trying to play good defense and better ball control offense, it’s probably enough to win the NFC West. Put Baalke in charge of locating the next franchise QB for the next 2 years. He’s the new GM, it’s his job.
Digital Garbage
maybe
we could just not use a QB. run the ball every play and let brian westbrook or anthony dixon get 4000 yds rushing and set the all time record for most consecutive games without a pass play
oh right
of course, and andy lee will be super bowl mvp
Was McDaniels really the #2?
Or was he just given a thorough interview, same as Hue Jackson?

Just read an article from Cam Cameron in Baltimore saying that he thought Hue Jackson will make a great HC. He said he has a great offensive mind, is organized, and was the one who really helped Flacco transition to the NFL in his rookie year.
Plus if we hire Hue, we screw you know who . . . not all bad.

yeah.
If Harbaugh falls through (and it seems he will) I’m gonna be beating this drum loudly.
No more mock draft sig for now...
Also agree with your other post
If you can deal with Al Davis, you can deal with anyone.
No more mock draft sig for now...
The really sad thing is Josh McDaniels said "no thanks"
Even the terrible coaches don’t want anything to do with the niner front office. We are in so much trouble. Our next coach is gooing to be a joke because that’s all that will accept York “low ball” money and still be able to deal with Paraag and Jed.
Bring in Orton
Mcdaniels can screw with him again just fine. Wouldn’t Orten be thrilled.
Like I said, Hue Jackson
If he can work under Cable and Al Davis and can work for anybody.
Why not
worse scenario is we suck and we got the #1 pick next year.
Can’t you idiots see the silver lining here? Andrew Luck is returning to Stanford for the chance to get drafted by the Niners next year and lead them to greatness.
by M F on Jan 6, 2011 2:59 PM PST via mobile reply actions
No one thinks that far ahead except a Jeddi
And there’s a WORLD of diefference between Jed and a Jeddi
or Andrew Luck could suck and we wasted two years of our life we can't backs
I laughed at Minnesota’s fans Favre desperation, let’s move on from both.
If McDaniels was our coach
He’d bypass a chance at Luck for somebody he could’ve got in the 3rd or 4th round.
"Hype" has negative connotation for a reason
Something tells me Andrew Luck will not be the second coming of Tim Tebow Jesus.

I'm saying that they're probably not reliable.
I want the numbers from the SBN blogs, from the dashboard that admins have. So this is a pointless argument.
My initial post was reflecting on how we’ve burnt through 7000+ comments while The Phinsider just broke 1000 and how much of a shame it is that we want this so bad. I’m sorry.

Come on Jed
Let’s see if Jed puts up the money like he said or will he be shown to be a liar again.
I don't think he's lying
I think he just says things without really thinking. Like whe he said this would be the last year we didn’t make the playoffs, or when he said we’d still make the playoffs this year after the 0-5 start. He needs to start filtering what he says.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.
Maybe the fans that think he is lying need to get over it
and realize that it doesn’t matter if he predicts that the ’9ers will get to the playoffs or that they will get Harbaugh as the coach. Yeah, the “$$$ is no object” line is ironic and funny if he gets outbid, but still… who cares?

The anger on here is a bit mindblowing
I get why people are excited about Harbaugh, but as of right now we barely know anything besides a few leaks from sources that have been wrong in the past. We’re jumping to a lot of conclusions and throwing a lot of people under the bus based on those conclusions when factually we’ve actually learned nothing.
If anything Jed just needs to start speaking like a politician rather than making declarations left and right that fans will jump all over and hold his feet to the fire for. Beyond that I think we’re overreacting a bit.

You will never get a good QB in the 6th round of the draft. What about Brady? OK one guy. Um.. what about Unitas, or Warner? OK there are a few exceptions to the thousands of guys out there. You said never, so you are wrong.
Money is always an issue, always.
NOT 15K, OR 8K
I’d be happy if we told Harbuagh, listen, we’ll give you $6.5M and you can stay in the Bay Area and help re-build the organization Bill Walsh made great. That will be your legacy. But beyond $6.5M, then it gets to be just who’se the highest bidder and we’re out.
But somehow I doubt it ever got there.
Thinkin' it's not the money, it's the integrity now ... on both side's ...
… if Harbaugh goes to the Fish after the way they treated their Coach then shame on him , as for the owner’s of the Fish their going to lose all credibility around the league from other owner’s …!!

Look man,
It’s not really about Harbaugh is it? I mean, its more about the 49ers being relevant again. We are mad because the guy is looked at as a football hero, the man who saved football. People are mad because we need some hope for this 49er team. You are right, he should take the money if that’s what he wants. But eight years of not making the playoffs makes people crazy. We were so great for so long, that people are scared that losing will again become our tradition.

And this has been one hell of a nightmare.
Why? Why? Why?
Why would enter negotiations and not be prepared to go at least a little higher than what Pete Carroll got? Any fucking idiot who follows the 49ers knows that but yet somehow Jed doesn’t? Why get the fans all fired up only to leave us embarrassed and depressed? If I hear that Jed offered 6.5 or more and lost out I can live with that but if they didn’t budge off 5 million then they were wasting everybody’s time. Why should I not sell my tickets to the fans of the opposing team each week next season? Why can’t I think of a good reason not to do that? Why?
I totally agree
I can’t expect Jeb to offer 8+ but 6-6.5 range at least.

Technical Answer:
GIF – Graphics Interchange Format.
One of the earliest graphics standards, created by CompuServe (if you don’t know, it’s not worth explaining).
Later revisions allowed for simple flip-page style animation. GIF is not inherently slower, but depending on the type and size it can slow page loads.

but when we say “no gifs” we actually mean “no animations”.
non-animated GIFs are allowed, and animated PNGs are banned.
also note that this does not apply to all threads, just the long ones like game threads, draft threads, and Harbaugh threads.

At this point
Ross might as well give the Rooney Rule the bird and show it his ass. Its obvious he didn’t give two shits about it.
Just worth pointing out:
If I were Harbaugh, you know what I’d do?
Take every meeting. See what Miami, Denver, and San Francisco were willing to pay. See what Stanford would pay to keep me.
Then go home and huddle up with the family. Come to a decision with the wife, taking the kid’s situation into account.
And then decide.
Any reason to think this isn’t what Harbaugh is doing?
That's rational.
We are not rational here.

We’re no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment’s what I’m thinking of
You wouldn’t get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I’m feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
We’ve known each other for so long
Your heart’s been aching, but
You’re too shy to say it
Inside we both know what’s been going on
We know the game and we’re gonna play it
And if you ask me how I’m feeling
Don’t tell me you’re too blind to see
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
(Oooooooh, Give you up)

The San Francisco 49ers have "lost Harbaugh" in the past two days after believing they could strike a deal, according to sources within that organization. Harbaugh interviewed with 49ers owner Jed York and new general manager Trent Baalke earlier this week.
Oh well… I guess Mr. Harbaugh’s got something better. Sorry, but Brian Billick won’t come here.

yes, we're in the same spot. which is nowhere.
i’m not putting a whole lot of weight on any of the “news” that has come out as of late. every time things seem to be almost settled, they take a turn in a complete different direction. i’m just gonna sit and enjoy the ride and when harbaugh FINALLY has a press conference with his team (whoever it is), then i’ll deal with it.
