The Jim Harbaugh Saga Continues

I'm running out of things to write, honestly. We can't really post things other than the Jim Harbaugh or general head coaching news because frankly, the posts are ignored, so we will just continue our present discussions in this new thread!

The very latest is that the Dolphins officials are still here in the Bay Area, and are prepared to go beyond anything in the NFL salary-wise. The Dolphins still have Tony Sparano, and they still have to comply with the Rooney Rule. It is possible that they interview Hue Jackson while they are in the Bay Area. The rumored numbers are north of seven million right now, and it's apparent that the 49ers cannot approach such an offer. Andrew Luck has stated that he will be staying at Stanford and they re-emerge as a possibly place for Harbaugh in 2011.

From a completely unbiased standpoint, I feel like Mr. Steve Ross is kind of a douchebag, and I've had several Miami fans agree with me on that front - the way this is all being conducted. As to the 49ers and their declaration of money not being an object - it was a silly thing for Jed to say and it won't be the last time he puts his foot in his mouth. The fact is that regardless, this is far too much money to pay.

For now, let's get discussion going here. Site decorum is off for another thread, but other site rules regarding personal attacks and the like are still disallowed. If you need to ask whether or not you can say something in this thread, you can send me an email if you'd like - but more than likely you should just not say it. Posting .gif images are not allowed in this thread.

I'm honoured.

But yeah as someone said on the previous thread, the Dolphins should have draft-picks taken away from them.

Bet good old Jed didn't think

Money would approach 7 million… I guess the reasoning for his money not an issue statement…

I’m kind of getting a little tired of this drawn out deal… Wont be as pissed as I was yesterday if we don’t get him..

by ZonaBacks10 on Jan 6, 2011 2:15 PM PST reply actions

Well, since Denise earned a reputation for being cheap -

- obviously, some people were afraid that Jed wouldn’t be willing to spend reasonably.

That we was willing to give $5m/yr to an unproven guy suggests that cheapness wasn’t an issue here.

Too bad it wasn’t enough.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 6, 2011 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

Foolishness

This whole fiasco has been foolish for the very beginning. Leaking damning stories to the press about your own, existing coach. Making winning declaration via text to reporters. Firing the coach the second he left the locker room than declaring:
a) An all out GM search when it was never the intent
b) The GM would pick the coach when Harbaugh was the target the entire time
c) Money is no object when they knew the minimum price would be $6 million per year and they were only going to offer up to $5 million.

Jed needs to fire himself from GM. Could not have made himself a bigger embarrassment, I think he surpassed his father … by a mile.

The problem wasn’t the firing. The problem was Jed spent the entire season undermining Singletary to the media … what was the point?

Well Said

Once it became clear that Jed was going to hire another “yes man” and then function as the de-facto GM, all reasonable candidates didn’t want any part of it.

Its too bad. The Harbaughs and Grudens of the world do want to be the coach of the 49ers. They just don’t want to work for Jed York.

Hey ninj you know what steve ross makes the NFL looks n im kind of surprised

the commisioner hasn’t said anything but if miami interviews hue out here then hires harbaugh it really cheapens the ‘’rooney rule’‘even more than it already is makes it look like a slight loop hole that can be done on the fly or road. But the more you here people on espn n other sport shows they don’t feel that he could posibly be worth all this hype.Do i want him yea it wouldn’t hurt but life goes on theres other coaches out there with NFL exp we will be okay. But honestly in the end i see harbuagh spurring the dolphins n take our deal family comes first if he’s as good as he think he is the money will be there he’s still young, but if he takes it all and flame out in miami he could forget the NFL head coachig job for a minute he would have to go back to college n resurect a team from the dead so that would push his nextt NFL HC job back to about 6yrs from now.He would be alot richer but he would be just like nate the dictate where hot college coach takes the money n can’t win back with the babies let us big boys do what we do.

That was a while ago

He’s been OC in Philly for last 6 yrs and one would think that he’s learned from being around Andy Reid. There’s no Bill Walsh or Vince Lombardi’s running around out there. So everyone’s going to have something that’s questionable. But he has experience in NFL, he was here for a stint, and he’s put together a good offensive scheme and team. Get him a compatible OC and DC…some of which may already be on staff…and let’s move on.

by See Jay on Jan 6, 2011 2:44 PM PST up reply actions

I thought so too, with the whole token candidate thing

but Fooch (site moderator) brought up the point that Tony Dunghy is a supporter of the Rooney Rule, because it at the very least gives minority candidates experience in interviewing, which is a plus. (a foot in the door, so to speak.)

Interviewing experience can be quite valuable

by brundylop on Jan 6, 2011 2:44 PM PST up reply actions

The Rule exists because

There was a time not long ago, when minority candidates weren’t considered, weren’t interviewed, weren’t in the mix. So the rule is there to make sure that the good old boys have to at least give consideration. And by doing so, you provide exposure to those who might not have gotten attention otherwise, and yes they also get experience going through the process and interviewing. The rule is not racist, it exists to combat it. It may be that we’re close to being at a point where the way of thinking that created the need for the rule has dimmenished. But the rule still have value until the doors are wide open. Not there yet. There was a time when there we no minority qb’s in the league. Once given the opportunity to compete, that changed. There was a time when there were no minority coaches in the league. With time and opportunity that has now changed. The next frontier will be minorities in the FO and the same process may need to be followed.

So the rule is in place. Follow it.

by FunInTheSun on Jan 6, 2011 2:59 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Yah the rule isn't THAT dumb

but the enforcement is. The rule is basically a sham if the Seahawks absolutely know they want Pete Carroll and then hurry in Leslie Frazier for a sham interview.

For the Rooney Rule to be less of a “joke,” the NFL needs to enforce it better. The thing is, the underlying idea is impossible to enforce in earnest.

How can you “make” somebody seriously consider a minority when they wouldn’t otherwise? But such is the situation.

“But Pete Carroll makes $6.5.”
“We can’t match that.”
“Well, thanks for your offer, I’ll keep that in mind.” (Departs.)

You don't think there was a conversation about the plan for the team?

You do understand that job interviews aren’t just about the money, right?

In fact, in most job interviews, you don’t negotiate your deal. You might talk ballpark figures, and then the two sides seprate and if a job offer comes THEN you negotiate.

That’s how things generally work.

So they talked for six hours. And basically agreed that they would like to work together if they could come to a monetary agreement.

Which, it appears, they couldn’t.

It’s not an easy process. The Harburglar is trying to get the best $ offer for sure, but he HAS to be looking at more than that. But, it’s pretty basic stuff for negotiator to entertain other offers in order to drive up the price. Maybe he just wants to get the 9ers up over Pete Carrol’s offer?

Agreed

I genuinely don’t understand why people are so loathe to pay NFL coaches, but not players. The NFL is a coaches’ league, vastly more than baseball or football. Why else has New England pretty much turned over its entire roster multiple times since their first Super Bowl season, save for Brady, and yet kept it humming so smoothly that their version of a “down” year during that entire stretch was 11-5. Sure, you could argue it’s all Brady, but I say it’s 93 percent Belichick. The fact that the team barely missed a beat the year Brady was out pretty well underscores the point. As far as I’m concerned, Belichick would be worth $20 million a year. Harbaugh? Eight mil? Why not?

Apologies to Vernon Davis, but how on earth does it make sense to put your absolute cap for a coach—including a wonderboy who is more coveted than any coach in memory—at approximately 50 percent less what your tight end is making? Was Bill Walsh 50 percent less valuable to the Niners than Russ Francis?

by BlueInTheFace on Jan 6, 2011 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know what this so-called Rooney Rule is..

But it seems to me that if you already offered a legitimate amount to a guy in order to stop him from signing a deal, you have bypassed the whole interview process. After that kind of action, the interview process is over. At least we did a sham interview before offering the lowball deal to Harbaugh. Miami is basically spitting in the face of the Rooney rule.

I think this Rooney rule is obviously a sham and should be terminated immediately however. It doesn’t seem to actually influence anyones decisions anyway. I think this is another case of another team improperly interfering with the 49ers negotiations, which seems to happen every time we try to sign someone.

"Well that's something that we want. We want to be in the mix. We've been looking at this right now as compared to the NFL playoffs and I think it's probably the closest thing to what our situation is. It started last week with Oregon. We had to win, stay, and hunt for the Pac-10 championship and the same is true this week. We lose and we're out of that. We win and we're still in it. That's tough, that's like put up or shut up time like I said before. That's kind of our only mode."
- Jim Harbaugh

by Pat Willie on Jan 6, 2011 2:55 PM PST reply actions

I agree

Jed needs to deliver and keep his mouth shut. As for the Rooney rule it is probably better than the affirmative action thing if I said that right. That rule if i u do not have minorities u get the heat from the feds. I just do not see any team playing the race card. I think any sports league takes talent over race. Maybe I am naive but I just do not see the hate and agree the Rooney rule should be removed. Of course this all leads to some great speculation over what teams are doing until they full fill the Rooney rule. Crazy.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Less film more creativity please.

Anyone want to talk about Plan B?

Oh that’s right it already a failure. Plan B was Josh McDaniels because it’s who all the so-called GM candidates name dropped but he has already told the 49ers to pound sand.

Right now the 49ers look like someone who has lost $20k in Vegas and are still desperately chasing the money at the tables. Take my advice: walk away, call your wife with the terrible news and come home.

Since all their plans suck go with mine. Hire Ron Rivera, have him bring Billy Volek as a stop gap QB and go into 2011 trying to play good defense and better ball control offense, it’s probably enough to win the NFC West. Put Baalke in charge of locating the next franchise QB for the next 2 years. He’s the new GM, it’s his job.

The anger on here is a bit mindblowing

I get why people are excited about Harbaugh, but as of right now we barely know anything besides a few leaks from sources that have been wrong in the past. We’re jumping to a lot of conclusions and throwing a lot of people under the bus based on those conclusions when factually we’ve actually learned nothing.

If anything Jed just needs to start speaking like a politician rather than making declarations left and right that fans will jump all over and hold his feet to the fire for. Beyond that I think we’re overreacting a bit.

Look man,

It’s not really about Harbaugh is it? I mean, its more about the 49ers being relevant again. We are mad because the guy is looked at as a football hero, the man who saved football. People are mad because we need some hope for this 49er team. You are right, he should take the money if that’s what he wants. But eight years of not making the playoffs makes people crazy. We were so great for so long, that people are scared that losing will again become our tradition.

Me personally. I dont care anymore. Just want the niners to be good again, dont care who coaches them.

As a result of this blunder, Jed “Mommy can you please co-sign my check” York has become the laughing stock of the league and has plunged the 49er franchise into depths so deep that even capable Chilean miners would not be able escape."

No more mock draft sig for now...

by See Jay on Jan 6, 2011 3:46 PM PST up reply actions

Why? Why? Why?

Why would enter negotiations and not be prepared to go at least a little higher than what Pete Carroll got? Any fucking idiot who follows the 49ers knows that but yet somehow Jed doesn’t? Why get the fans all fired up only to leave us embarrassed and depressed? If I hear that Jed offered 6.5 or more and lost out I can live with that but if they didn’t budge off 5 million then they were wasting everybody’s time. Why should I not sell my tickets to the fans of the opposing team each week next season? Why can’t I think of a good reason not to do that? Why?

by toadstool63 on Jan 6, 2011 3:26 PM PST reply actions

I can’t expect Jeb to offer 8+ but 6-6.5 range at least.

by jveezy on Jan 6, 2011 3:29 PM PST up reply actions

You do realize that $5m a year still puts a coach in the league's top ten, right?

Beating Carroll would make him the 3rd-most expensive coach in the league behind only Bellichek and Shannahan.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 6, 2011 3:42 PM PST up reply actions

my point is that if they did their homework they would have know that Harbaugh and Carroll have a history and that they should be prepared pay Carroll money or don’t get involved in the first place.

GIF – Graphics Interchange Format.

One of the earliest graphics standards, created by CompuServe (if you don’t know, it’s not worth explaining).

Later revisions allowed for simple flip-page style animation. GIF is not inherently slower, but depending on the type and size it can slow page loads.

Take every meeting. See what Miami, Denver, and San Francisco were willing to pay. See what Stanford would pay to keep me.
