Jim Harbaugh Not With Steve Ross At The Moment?!
Hey guys, do me a quick favor? Stop commenting, thanks. Alright - don't stop doing that, but we do need a new thread. Same shtick - no gifs, no personal insults and for this thread SITE DECORUM IS ON! I just like to mess with you guys. Can you reel it in?!
Anyway - Steve Ross (Dolphins owner) has left the Bay Area, according to Mindi Bach. That's apparently a big deal, because Jason LaConfora is tweeting at her asking if she is sure that Ross was on the plane that departed. Apparently, he's on his way to Burbank, CA and Jim Harbaugh is not with him.
Honestly, I'm not sure if that means anything for the 49ers, but I'm hoping it does. We've heard little out of the Niners today and I'd like to assume that means they're working hard to get something done with Harbaugh. Our options after him are few and far between, though they are arguably comparable to an extent.
Let's hope this is THE thread. What for? I don't know, I really, truly do not know.

I don't understand why the 49ers are being so cheap and dense
It’s pretty clear that to get Harbaugh, you need to give him an offer more than Pete Carroll. The 49ers’ offer, even with bonuses fulfilled, doesn’t do that.
WTF?
If you were gonna be cheap, why even make a big deal out of this. So dumb. No wonder this franchise is in the crapper.
Give me a break
That is such a dumb thing to say. Just because someone is a hot commodity doesn’t mean you just fork as much money as you can out there. There is no proof that Harbaugh will have success in the NFL, especially when there is other guys out there who can. The Dolphins came out reportly offering to make him the richest coach in the NFL, does that not sound foolish to you? And in doing such there is still nothing saying he will even sign with them. In my opinion, which I’ve thought the whole time, he goes back to Stanford, especially with Luck coming back.

No Harbaugh wont be there.
There’s gonna be thousands of fans angry at Ross when they all find out he didn’t get the deal done! Harbaugh will come to his senses and realize he has a better chance to win in the Bay Area and that it is better than the warm sunny beaches and girls in bikinis…..oh wait…..this sucks

My whole premise
Is the 49ers were poorly coached this season. Rivera is an upgrade on the defensive side of the ball, he can legitimately get the team to a top 3 defensive squad.
Offensively the 49ers can’t be coached any worse. An offensive guru would be nice but the team would show a significant improvement with an OC that is merely adequate. Add in there are no offensive gurus left after Harbaugh and the odds of finding a QBOTF are closer to none than slim this season I don’t see the point in going the offensive coaching route, the option simply aren’t there.

trying to snipe Harbaugh from the 49rs
is a prick move of epic proportions. that can’t make him very well-liked around the league, because if he does it to one team he’ll do it to another
Harbaugh has a part in this too
If there’s a coaching brotherhood. He could have not met with them until there was an official opening. Slimbaugh.

What are you talking about?
Harbaugh has been the hot candidate for months. Everybody knew it.
He wanted an interview, knew he had to move fast, and moved fast. Nothing unethical about it in the slightest as far as Harbaugh is concerned. (As far as Sparano and the Rooney rule, on the other hand …)
It's a prick move
because he didn’t start moving until after the 49ers had been negotiating all day. Got no problem with him making the move before then.
Actually it's pretty stand up if you ask me.
Ross waited until he knew Michigan was out, then jumped on it. His loyalties are to Michigan not the Niners.

When Miami is much more than a 2 year ‘project.’ Definitely in that division.
Well, Sparano got three years .
I think it’s fair to expect a coach to show progress in that much time. But I haven’t followed Miami to know if there’s really progress there or not, at this point. I know his rookie season there was pretty flukish.

TK reporting no deal between Harbaugh and Miami yet. Discussions still open.
Could be true. Could be a Rooney-rule-ruse.

Not in his twitter feed.
TK gets enough stuff wrong without people making up wrong stuff and attributing it to him.

Fair enough.
TK gets a lot of unfounded grief. There are times when he deliberately stirs the pot (I think he enjoys trolling die hard fans a bit) but he’s rarely totally out in left field.
last night
he said the talks were over and then 5 minutes later said they were back on. it’s that kind of stuff that gets people on his case
And a totally fair criticism.
It’s gotta be real tough to be in that position these days, though.
There are 3-4 guys who are all trying to get there first with the most. If TK doesn’t report it, who’s to say Barrows won’t.

I say we pay John Harbaugh 8.1 million
"We'd like to think that tickets will be hard to come by." Bill Walsh
not worth it
the problem with a bidding war is that you let your emotions take control and don’t use your head.
an unproven NFL coach is not worth $8 million per year
still not worth $8.1 million
my guess he just got confused since noone is offering John anywhere close to $8 mil

C'mon Beane! Close off the bottom deck and reopen the top!
Maybe the Miami stuff is just leverage.......
I mean I’m sure Jed would be willing to cough up between 6.5-7 mill a year…plus they could sell the fact that Harbaugh doesn’t have to uproot his whole family and move across the US. Not to mention that we are a QB away from being a very good football team in a weak division where he could win a lot sooner.
So what was the "Baalke flys to Florida to chat with Parcells" thing all about?
I think he’s in on it.
Parcells has nothing to do with Miami.

I think coaches deserve more money for all they have to go through, but honor should come first, not that Jed has shown a lot of that, but he’s trying to be a better owner than Dolphins owner.

If Harbaugh signs with Miami for $8 million per

I would give Harbaugh the world in incentives.
I’m totally fine with incentives. Like, looking at the Giants of last season (SF Giants) they had all these ridiculous contracts, but everyone helped. You know what happened? They won a world series. Every. Single. Contract was worth it on that team, with the one world series.
Which is why I’m totally OK with incentives.

I'd offer more in incentives
$6.5 base salary. Post-season appearance nets $500k. NFC championship nets another $500k. SB appearance nets $750k. Victory nets $1 million. That could earn him $2 million in incentives taking him to that $8.5
I think it HAS to be 6.7 at least in base
Just for the Carroll factor.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter | SB Nation Bay Area | SaberCats Examiner | Niners Nation | FTF Mod
maybe the opportunity to beat Carroll
is worth $250 k per game. Every win over Seattle nets $250k in his pocket.
can teams even give bonuses to coaches based on regular season games?
Why not?
Of course they can. Incentives are incentives. Players can get TD incentives during the season.
Like you told me last night
It’s just not the going rate and just not the way it is.
I wanted to pay Harbaugh $20 million, because he is more important than a player, and you said, but it’s not the way it is, even though it should be.
So that’s my response to you ;-)
I don’t believe coaching contracts are regulated in that way. They can offer any kind of incentive they want, so long as it does not involve doing anything against league regulation.
Might not be able to say “every time you beat the Seahawks,” because that’s like “headhunting,” but a bonus after divisional rival wins is possible, I’d say.

Not that odd a thing for a HC that did not have success.
Tom Cable will likely go back to being an OL coach. Bill Callahan did. You coach what you know and at which you excelled before you got promoted above your skill level.

I vow to never mention "playoffs" and "49ers" together again until we have a "quarterback."
I think people around the league
will look at Cable for more than just OLine. I think he got a great deal of respect for what he did with the Raiders. My feeling is that he was fired over the QB conflict—he wanted Gradkowski and Al Davis wanted Jason Campbell
I think Cable is over his head as HC
Stuff coming from the Raiders players now sounds like the Niners of 2009. 8-8 record with close losses, dominant play within the division, two QBs contributing, and an assumption that things will get better the next season. Cable owes all his good will this season to Hue Jackson, a healthy and maturing McFadden, and playing the NCFW while in the AFCW. Just like our Niners, every Raider victory was over a West team. He’s a good motivator and OL coach but he’s no strategist, and as we learned, motivation only goes so far beyond a season or two.

I don’t hink it sounded like the Niners of 09. I think Cable stood up to Davis, and told him he wanted to do it his way with the QB, and when they didn’t finish with a winning record, he was out. I think Cable put himself on the limb we he wanted Gradkowski instead of Campbell whom Davis wanted. When Campbell played better, Cable was out.

I honestly think that all these “reporters” (any fool with a twitter account that decides to toy with the hearts of red and gold supporters) know nothing more than we do. We all simply have to wait and see. We know ALL the pros and cons of ALL of his possible choices, basically. We’ve been hashing it all out for hours and hours.
The decision will clearly come down to him and his family. Never underestimate the power of a family’s wishes. Especially because I don’t really see money being a problem for him anytime soon.

Why do you think SF has a real shot at His Hard-to-catch Baghness?

Appreciate your optimism, btw
I am infected with Harbaughmania! The only known cure is hiring Harbaugh and trading up for Andrew Luck.
reasons
1.) High profile position
2.) wouldn’t have to move
3.) Team on the verge of greatness
4.) Multiple draft picks to play with
5.) Proud franchise with lots of history
Why entertain miami's millions, stanford, michigan, and possibly now Denver?
Seems to me he might be playing the 49ers?
I am infected with Harbaughmania! The only known cure is hiring Harbaugh and trading up for Andrew Luck.
So I am doing a three day long mock draft
After five round the niners got
1. Brandon Harris
2. Jimmy Smith
3. Colin Kaepernick
4. Torrey Smith
5. Jaquizz Rodgers
6. Owen Marecic
Kellen Moore is awesome
Isnt Harris going back to school?

If we get any coach that can coach a QB draft Locker.

He'd have done better by winning the Sugar Bowl
Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
I vow to never mention "playoffs" and "49ers" together again until we have a "quarterback."
Look i said this before...
He is going to make the best decision for him and his family. And what we found out today, not even 40million could make a bright college superstar (Luck) foregoe his senior year and enter the draft. Anything is possible. JH wants to hear out all his options, and then he will make a decision with his family.
PS: The other day, I peaked over to Cat Scratcher (Panthers Nation), and they were enjoying and taking pleasure at our squirming and panic over JH. Well today, i look over, and i take pleasure in their misery! HA HA!
Don't forget that the CBA might include a clause that the salary cap doesn't kick in until the following draft.
Could be a sticking point to get things going.

Question from a relatively new guy
How did you guys manage to create such a great 49ers fan forum? I am a long time reader of Maiocco, Barrows, Kevin Lynch, and Mike Sando and all of their comments boards are absolutely troll-infested. Here, I feel like people will actually read what you say, request sources (other than, don’t question my god-like knowledge), and are generally courteous enough to address the argument instead of calling you a fart-sniffer for making the point you just made.
I am infected with Harbaughmania! The only known cure is hiring Harbaugh and trading up for Andrew Luck.

Stanford or SF?
Harbaugh already did great things in Stanford.
What’s next? NFL.
Perfect scenario that 49ers have a roster that is not bad with several pockets of talent, plus new GM that will accompany Harbaugh as a “new” guy in their new positions and help progress the franchise…
youd think
thats the common sense thing to do with a big family and all established in the bay area….

first comment on a harbaugh thread
I’m sure what I’m saying has been said a million times before. If the Dolphins are really offering 8M then they are morons. If I were the Yorks no way would I match that. Not to mention FL has no state income tax so that 8M is really like 8.8M in CA dollars. I don’t see how we can compete with that offer.
I agree with previous posters, offer 6.5 plus incentives and see what happens. Hopefully staying in the bay area is worth 2.3M a year to him and his fam.

And i dont think we will get Billick. Sorry.
On No Huddle on NFLN (Thursday show fyi), Billick said he would not coach a team without a solid QB.
Because he knows he can't coach one up on his own.
Probably why he has been unemployed as a coach since 2007. Teams with good QBs don’t get their coaches fired.

Huh?
Ross went to Michigan, he is a HUGE contributor. I know he has given more than $100 million to that school. Pretty sure some building is named after him.
Anyways, he is loyal to them, didn’t want to step on their toes, and waited until Michigan was out of the running, then pounced like a starved mountain lion.
That’s why I responded to smiley above when he said Ross was underhanded and shady or whatever he said. I was actually impressed that he waited knowing he wanted him. His loyalty is to Michigan, not the 49ers. And his loyalty, was the only reason he had to wait so long.
Not much loyalty to his current coach either. Good for a future coach to know.
