Jim Harbaugh Not With Steve Ross At The Moment?!

Hey guys, do me a quick favor? Stop commenting, thanks. Alright - don't stop doing that, but we do need a new thread. Same shtick - no gifs, no personal insults and for this thread SITE DECORUM IS ON! I just like to mess with you guys. Can you reel it in?!

Anyway - Steve Ross (Dolphins owner) has left the Bay Area, according to Mindi Bach. That's apparently a big deal, because Jason LaConfora is tweeting at her asking if she is sure that Ross was on the plane that departed. Apparently, he's on his way to Burbank, CA and Jim Harbaugh is not with him.

Honestly, I'm not sure if that means anything for the 49ers, but I'm hoping it does. We've heard little out of the Niners today and I'd like to assume that means they're working hard to get something done with Harbaugh. Our options after him are few and far between, though they are arguably comparable to an extent.

Let's hope this is THE thread. What for? I don't know, I really, truly do not know.

I don't understand why the 49ers are being so cheap and dense

It’s pretty clear that to get Harbaugh, you need to give him an offer more than Pete Carroll. The 49ers’ offer, even with bonuses fulfilled, doesn’t do that.

WTF?

If you were gonna be cheap, why even make a big deal out of this. So dumb. No wonder this franchise is in the crapper.

by Boo-urns on Jan 6, 2011 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

Give me a break

That is such a dumb thing to say. Just because someone is a hot commodity doesn’t mean you just fork as much money as you can out there. There is no proof that Harbaugh will have success in the NFL, especially when there is other guys out there who can. The Dolphins came out reportly offering to make him the richest coach in the NFL, does that not sound foolish to you? And in doing such there is still nothing saying he will even sign with them. In my opinion, which I’ve thought the whole time, he goes back to Stanford, especially with Luck coming back.

No Harbaugh wont be there.

There’s gonna be thousands of fans angry at Ross when they all find out he didn’t get the deal done! Harbaugh will come to his senses and realize he has a better chance to win in the Bay Area and that it is better than the warm sunny beaches and girls in bikinis…..oh wait…..this sucks

I hope Harbaugh

My whole premise

Is the 49ers were poorly coached this season. Rivera is an upgrade on the defensive side of the ball, he can legitimately get the team to a top 3 defensive squad.

Offensively the 49ers can’t be coached any worse. An offensive guru would be nice but the team would show a significant improvement with an OC that is merely adequate. Add in there are no offensive gurus left after Harbaugh and the odds of finding a QBOTF are closer to none than slim this season I don’t see the point in going the offensive coaching route, the option simply aren’t there.

because he didn’t start moving until after the 49ers had been negotiating all day. Got no problem with him making the move before then.

Actually it's pretty stand up if you ask me.

Ross waited until he knew Michigan was out, then jumped on it. His loyalties are to Michigan not the Niners.

If he actually told the 49ers he was going to meet with the Dophins before he gave them an answer, that insuates something was already scheduled. Just because the media breaks some news doesn’t mean it was like a random thing. I imagine it was all planned, and I’m sure the Niners didn’t blow him out of the water.

I sincerely hope the 49ers are promising Jim plenty of time.

If they can guarantee he’s not fired after one or two seasons, that might help. I believe Jim is a very methodical guy that could need some time. I know Miami isn’t offering that, Sparano thought he was in for the long haul.

I think it’s fair to expect a coach to show progress in that much time. But I haven’t followed Miami to know if there’s really progress there or not, at this point. I know his rookie season there was pretty flukish.

I don’t believe coaching contracts are regulated in that way. They can offer any kind of incentive they want, so long as it does not involve doing anything against league regulation.

Might not be able to say “every time you beat the Seahawks,” because that’s like “headhunting,” but a bonus after divisional rival wins is possible, I’d say.

Cable owes all his good will this season to Hue Jackson, a healthy and maturing McFadden, and playing the NCFW while in the AFCW. Just like our Niners, every Raider victory was over a West team. He’s a good motivator and OL coach but he’s no strategist, and as we learned, motivation only goes so far beyond a season or two.

Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!

by smileyman on Jan 6, 2011 5:31 PM PST up reply actions

Did you hear what Lechler said?

I don’t hink it sounded like the Niners of 09. I think Cable stood up to Davis, and told him he wanted to do it his way with the QB, and when they didn’t finish with a winning record, he was out. I think Cable put himself on the limb we he wanted Gradkowski instead of Campbell whom Davis wanted. When Campbell played better, Cable was out.

We all simply have to wait and see. We know ALL the pros and cons of ALL of his possible choices, basically. We’ve been hashing it all out for hours and hours.

The decision will clearly come down to him and his family. Never underestimate the power of a family’s wishes. Especially because I don’t really see money being a problem for him anytime soon.

How did you guys manage to create such a great 49ers fan forum? I am a long time reader of Maiocco, Barrows, Kevin Lynch, and Mike Sando and all of their comments boards are absolutely troll-infested. Here, I feel like people will actually read what you say, request sources (other than, don’t question my god-like knowledge), and are generally courteous enough to address the argument instead of calling you a fart-sniffer for making the point you just made.

I’m sure what I’m saying has been said a million times before. If the Dolphins are really offering 8M then they are morons. If I were the Yorks no way would I match that. Not to mention FL has no state income tax so that 8M is really like 8.8M in CA dollars. I don’t see how we can compete with that offer.

I agree with previous posters, offer 6.5 plus incentives and see what happens. Hopefully staying in the bay area is worth 2.3M a year to him and his fam.

of the way many W’s fans were disappointed when the Gruber group seemingly swooped in @ the last second to prevent Ellison buying the team. One last “f*** you!” by Cohan to the fans was the general sentiment.

Hopefully this ongoing saga turns out better for Bay Area fans

And i dont think we will get Billick. Sorry.

On No Huddle on NFLN (Thursday show fyi), Billick said he would not coach a team without a solid QB.

by Giants49war on Jan 6, 2011 6:00 PM PST reply actions

Because he knows he can't coach one up on his own.

Probably why he has been unemployed as a coach since 2007. Teams with good QBs don’t get their coaches fired.

kinda wonders why Gruden is still employed. Im amazed Mooch is still not back in coaching. And yesterdays High school all star game does not count. lol

Perception of York

York didnt want to pay Hardbaugh in the first place. He knew their would be a bidding war, so he low balled to make it seem he was willing to pay the big bucks for a coach

What do you think

The odds on re signing guys like Dashon or Manny is? Or do you think there might be a cleaning of the house in talent as well as the coaching staff?

by Nick Bays on Jan 6, 2011 6:05 PM PST up reply actions

Manny will probably be back unless someone gives him stupid money.

Played well. They will try for Dashon, but see Aubrayo as a bigger priority, i bet.

But Dashon this year… I’m not sure if it’s a product of bad coaching of if he just had a fluke year in 2009.

I doubt they even went at the same time, let alone know each other!!!

by brundylop on Jan 6, 2011 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

Huh?

Ross went to Michigan, he is a HUGE contributor. I know he has given more than $100 million to that school. Pretty sure some building is named after him.

Anyways, he is loyal to them, didn’t want to step on their toes, and waited until Michigan was out of the running, then pounced like a starved mountain lion.

That’s why I responded to smiley above when he said Ross was underhanded and shady or whatever he said. I was actually impressed that he waited knowing he wanted him. His loyalty is to Michigan, not the 49ers. And his loyalty, was the only reason he had to wait so long.
