Golden Nuggets: Jim Harbaugh Signs With 49ers

After the way this past week has gone, I'm fairly certain there is nobody in the free world, or at least among 49ers fans, that doesn't know that yesterday Jim Harbaugh agreed to a five year contract with the San Francisco 49ers worth $25 million. We had a whole ton of coverage of the event yesterday, as well as in the days leading up to it. We have a whole section dedicated to the past two weeks of coverage since Mike Singletary was fired after Week 16. I recommend heading over there to recount the descent into madness many of us suffered. All I know is I plan on getting a ton of sleep this weekend.

As we move forward, Jed York's quotation to open things is appropriate. Our work doesn't end with the hiring of Jim Harbaugh, but rather it only just begins. I'd love to see 1,000 thread comments going up five times a day, but I can recognize how exhausting that has been. However, definitely keep checking in at Niners Nation as we prepare for the Jim Harbaugh era. There is so much to discuss and hopefully little time to discuss it (I'm looking at you NFL and NFLPA!). We'll have some non-Harbaugh coverage today in the form of a playoff thread, but of course we'll also have some more Harbaugh throughout the day.

What a week

I’ve never sat in front of a computer for that many consecutive hours before. My sleeping pattern is out of whack because of it. Jim Harbaugh, you are bad for our health.

by mrg80 on Jan 8, 2011 4:12 AM PST reply actions

So

We’ve got a GM and a head coach, now we need a QB. I’m in favour of making a run at Vince Young. What’s the consensus view?

by Calum on Jan 8, 2011 4:24 AM PST via mobile reply actions

I think a vet + a young gun

Is the best way to go. Also, I said it before in previous threads…I think Harbaugh will go after Luck in ’12.

by js82 on Jan 8, 2011 5:03 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

this may sound dumb

but I would like the 49ers to get a vet qb who is familiar with a pass oriented offense (ie Kolb, Mcnabb, Palmer, Orton). then, get a db/de (and a qb if a really good one like mallet, locker, or others are still on the board) in the first round then vise versa in the remaining rounds. yeah, yeah, I know.. we need a qb.. but a rookie qb (even luck) won’t be “nfl ready” by the time they hit the pros. seeing how easy it is to draft a bust at qb, I would rather see the niners get a vet qb like I said, and draft a young stud, and be the under study until deemed ready. The vet qb doesn’t have to be the solution, but just a stop gap if you will.. If all of that fails… well… getting luck next yr if he comes out is nice..

Vince young ugh.

He’s a problem. Why would you want a QB who is still really unproven. Plus comes with a ton of baggage. He’s immature, egotistical and that’s even before you get to his shortcomings on the field.
Why is everybody so down on Alex. First he’s a class act. Next when he had a good coach Turner he was making very good progress. Then came injuries and a series of incompetent and irrational coaches blocking any progress. Now the 9ers have a coach who knows quarterbacking inside and out. Alex is still young and has shown flashes of competence despite the chaos. Give him a break. With somebody knew we would be starting from scratch.

by 49er faithful on Jan 8, 2011 4:48 AM PST reply actions

Because he can’t throw a 5 yard out. He couldn’t pick up simple 3rd downs against the cards, even though he made a couple nice deep throws. I’m tired of watching him overthrow passes other QB make routinely.

by mrg80 on Jan 8, 2011 5:20 AM PST up reply actions

In my opinion...

the 49ers need a pass first qb.. by that I mean not like vince young.. more like a manning kinda guy in the sense of being a pocket qb. no offense, but I agree that vince young won’t cut it in my book.. ugh.. what do I know.. In coach harbaugh I trust.

Let's build a cathedral!

by JC0320 on Jan 8, 2011 5:24 AM PST up reply actions

believe it or not guys

If coach harbaugh thinks that he can help alex smith, or any qb’s that we currently have, I would take his choice rather than vince young. BUT, if the story is the 9ers get a qb not named vince, and a young gun in the draft, pf course vince can fill the emergency role pretty good.. Im not hating on vince young at all. Im just saying that he’s not a fit in what coach harbaugh wants to do (WCF).

Let's build a cathedral!

Alex ain't coming back.

He wants to move on and the Niners want him to move on. If he’s successful elsewhere, great for him, but it’s hard to be successful at a place where you’ll get booed after 1 incompletion.

Props to York/Baalke for reeling in Harbaugh. Now everybody get back to work!

by grantmp on Jan 8, 2011 5:54 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Pretty sure he hadn't thrown a TD when they boo'd him in all fairness

People are just tired of watching and looking at the guy. I know I am, time to just move on and forget about him. I don’t blame him for everything by any means, but, game over, time to move on.

In Jed We Trust?

by jonesin25 on Jan 8, 2011 6:39 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I'll be rooting for him to succeed if he signs with another team

every week except when he faces the 49ers (and even then, I’d like him to play well, but lose!)

Seems like a real good guy. Just got caught in a bad situation and wasn’t good enough to rise above it.

by brundylop on Jan 8, 2011 6:45 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah pretty much

I have no problem with him succeeding somewhere else and I do feel bad the way things worked out for him in SF. But as far as being the 49er QB, I’m bored with him, tired of him, as much of a good guy I think he is, I just can’t stand thinking of him as our QB anymore.

In Jed We Trust?

I wouldn’t mind it, but he won’t. Scarred for life aka Carr.

by mrg80 on Jan 8, 2011 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

The real problem w. Vince isn't just his QB skill

It’s his attitude. He’s a legend in his own mind, and has poor study habits as a result. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know or can’t do, which makes it hard for him to take the steps he needs to to get better.

Props to York/Baalke for reeling in Harbaugh. Now everybody get back to work!
twitter me @grantmp1

by grantmp on Jan 8, 2011 5:51 AM PST via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

I agree

His attitude is the major red flag. However, on the basis of talent, I think he’s well ahead of anyone else mentioned so far in this thread. I guess I’m taking the the optimistic view that with the right coaching he could be really good. I certainly wouldn’t want to give up too much for him though.
I like Alex Smith as a person but I think as an NFL QB his upside is average to slightly above average at best. McNabb has proven ability but looks like he might be past it. Everyone else available seems just as unproven. I don’t know that Young is the right choice; he just seems the best option to
me. Of course Harbaugh probably knows better…

by Calum on Jan 8, 2011 6:35 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Oh, and if we can find a way to get Luck in 2012 without giving up half the team I’m all for it.

by Calum on Jan 8, 2011 6:38 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Carolina, now facing a draft without Luck

is convinced by the 49ers to trade the pick in exchange for further picks (and possibly a few players).

Then Luck redeclares for the draft before the Jan.15 deadline, and then we are victorious!

Like I said before, Gooddell would destroy us for “cheating” or colluding, but it would be funny to see it work out like that, eh?

by brundylop on Jan 8, 2011 6:47 AM PST up reply actions

don't need vince young

vince might end up in Arizona or with the redskins….I wouldn’t mind palmer who look like Alex smith at times, I think orton or kolb fit best….& I want to see them sign ronde barber, pat williams and champ bailey this off season.

by Purple & Gold on Jan 8, 2011 5:06 AM PST reply actions

Bitter sweet

It was painfull waiting to see if we were going to get Harbaugh but it was well worth it. I am very excited as our offseason will be more exciting than this season was. I have a good feeling about this and I think now with the right COACH we can take it to the post season. I loved Singletaries intensity but now we get that and the know how to run a team. No hopefully players will not play scared like they’re in a Scared Strait Program lol.

by 49ersfan4life on Jan 8, 2011 5:22 AM PST reply actions

you know what

this means that the offseason would be waaaaaaaayyy slower for us.. that’s what happens when you haven’t fel excited about the 49ers in quite some time now. training camp can’t come soon enough.. worse, there might not even be a season.

playoffs?.... playoffs... you kiddin me?... lol

yeah, it sucks that the 49ers aint in it. but it sure would be awesome to see the seabirds get beat, and who’s gonna win it this year.

Let's build a cathedral!

by JC0320 on Jan 8, 2011 5:38 AM PST up reply actions

I'm conflicted

First off, I can’t stand seeing Pete Carroll’s “rah rah, fist pumping” coaching style on the sidelines, and hope Harbaugh wipes the deck with him next season.

Thus, I want the Seahawks to get their butts kicked, HARD.

Yet, at the same time, I’d like to get the NFC West some respect. I guess if the 49ers win in the playoffs next year, we’ll garner that. But it’d be nice to see an NFC West team beat the Saints and perhaps shut up all those “NFC West shouldn’t get a playoff representative” people.

by brundylop on Jan 8, 2011 5:43 AM PST up reply actions

Not conflicted

We don’t need Seattle to bring the NFC West any respect, we sucked this year and that’s it. Most of the smart media people (yes there are a few) understand that the first goal is to win your Division and the Seahawks did that.

Now it’s time for them to get a good old fashioned ass whup. The problem is they could be dangerous up there if Haselback gets hot. Saints are hurting too and have a poor record as a playoff road team. Still the biggest road favorite since they’ve been keeping track.

I would love nothing more than to see Seattle get crushed and have to limp home and live with it the whole off season. Geaux Saints!!!

often wrong. never in doubt.

bite your tongue

The only way I cheer for Seattle is if Carroll misses the game (hernia from jumping around like an idiot and forgetting he’s 87 years old) and some assistant works the other team and exposes the truth that Petey sucks

by mcwagner on Jan 8, 2011 6:21 AM PST up reply actions

lol @ the hernia

did you always hate pete Carroll and his antics? or is this a SEA thing?

by brundylop on Jan 8, 2011 6:24 AM PST up reply actions

double whammy

a lot of my family is from Seattle area, so they get razed just because.
I have always hated Pete, but loved USC. When Carroll got there, I hated them, now I like them again. He is just such a jerk, overrated blow-hard. He left the school in shame, I don’t think he ever developed his players. I am a nice guy, but I would clap my hands if Seattle kicks a FG and he jumps up and down and breaks his hip

by mcwagner on Jan 8, 2011 6:30 AM PST up reply actions

Can't deny that he made USC a great program again

and not sure about that “not developing players” comment, especially on Defense (his speciality). Yeah, his QB’s have flopped pretty bad in the NFL, but his Linebackers and safeties seem to have done pretty well.

Apparently he does a lot for the community too. He went out to really shady areas himself to improve the community (USC’s in a fairly bad neighborhood, as you probably know.)

But yeah, USC got in a ton of hot water for Carroll’s violations, and the innocent players this year receieve the punishment while Carroll waltzes off to a huge NFL contract. Can’t stand seeing him pumping his fists.

Hilarious
Still the biggest road favorite since they’ve been keeping track.

While I believe every division deserves to send a playoff representative, the seriously need to redo playoff seeding. 11-5 is lower seeding than 7-9? Yikes! What a joke.

I guess I will end up rooting for the Seacocks to get their feathers thoroughly ruffled.

by brundylop on Jan 8, 2011 6:11 AM PST up reply actions

no

There is no reason to change the playoff structure. A division winner needs to be rewarded. I don’t see anyone crying about Indy hosting. Indy had a tough division battle and that’s the way it goes.

by mrg80 on Jan 8, 2011 6:30 AM PST up reply actions

oh no I totally agree about division winners getting rewarded

and I think a playoff berth is reward enough.

Nobody’s crying about Indy hosting because they have a much harder division, and, let’s face it, they’ve won enough to garner a huge amount of respect. (Not saying that it’s fair, but you know that’s the reason why.)

All in all, it’s probably a moot point, since something like this won’t happen again for a while, and the Saints should be able to easily defeat Seattle.

But I still believe a present wild card with a better record should see home field.

by brundylop on Jan 8, 2011 6:39 AM PST up reply actions

If Seattle were 9-7 instead of 7-9, this would never come up

Even though the Saints still have a much better record.

I think the whole thing is just as ridiculous as the people in the mid-90’s who used to clamor for reseeding the playoffs so the Niners and Cowboys would meet in the Super Bowl because the AFC hadn’t won in over a decade.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Jan 8, 2011 6:42 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

yeah, you're right

in all fairness it’s a pretty moot point, I guess. 7-9 ain’t making the playoffs for a while.
But an 8-8 team at home vs a 10-6? I still think reseeding should apply there. But Goodll don’t give a damn.

One of my favorite draft sites is nfldraftcountdown.com, which, as the name suggests, has a countdown to the draft’s opening. The countdown is still over 100 days. I’m going to try to avoid the draft stuff until it’s about 14 days away. Oh, who am I kidding, I’m going to obsess about it daily—I can’t help myself!

by grantmp on Jan 8, 2011 6:00 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

We all do

(find it fascinating, not feel grantmp’s an idiot)

It’s because with the draft comes the hope/possibility that the team gets drastically better. People feel that if we draft player X, then we’ll solve the pass rush entirely. If we get Y, that shores up the secondary, etc, even when it’s not that simple.

and 49ers won’t be relevant for any reason until the draft, so there’s that too. I doubt we’d all be so fascinated with the draft if we were in the playoffs with a legit chance at the SB, you know?

Gisele's a supermodel, right?

That probably means New York is a way bigger pull for her… what weaknesses does she have that SF can expose?

Brady’s hair really made me laugh for 2 reasons:
1. It’s god awful
2. It’s god awful, and every newbie’s conversation goes like this:

A: Yikes! Tom Brady’s hair is awful. It’s pretty gay
B: You know…. it was his supermodel wife that made him do it.
A: Oh ok. I completely accept.

Also great shopping and fashion scene. Giradelli chocolate. MUCH better winters than NYC. The Bush Man. Giants.
Tell Gisele that the model thing makes her look like a whore. She should get into more artistic modeling, San Fran and our hippy wierdos are huge in the art world. She comes here to be more artistic. Brady does as told (like most husbands do) and we are in like Flynn. If that doesn’t work we will have to use our secret weapon:

“Right off the free agent market, signing a West Coast quarterback like Matt Hasselbeck could be a possibility. "

How about no.

I’m just saying that bringing in a vet QB could help, especially one with experience. Like I mentioned, it’s a possibility and for sure the team will think about all options on the market.

I’ll concede the point, minus Hasselbeck. He’s too old and beaten up, plus the fact that I would probably get ill seeing him in a SF uniform.

maybe

as a mentor not your starting QB.

by Xan101 on Jan 8, 2011 9:13 AM PST up reply actions

You have to have a QB that knows the offense in order to make it work. Hasselbeck can be that vet QB to help mold a rookie

Sparano got Soprano Money!

Yeah, when they told him he was on da chopping block, he didn’t want to get whacked, and told Ross to send Harbaugh back to the 49ers. Our win!

Finally he signed with my favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers. He is considered one of the top college prospects to move into the pro ranks, and has also been the top priority for the Niners’ new general manager, Trent Baalke. I just hope the Niners’ made the right decision oh hiring him as their head coach.
