QB Situation
We definitely need a long-term solution at QB. I would like to see the 49ers take Locker in the first round. He has the tools and he was expected to be the #1 pick for a reason. Going back to college for another year may have hurt his draft stock but it gave him more reps as a starter.
The question is whether or not he is ready to start from Day 1. If not, after the jump are some names that might be worth a shot.
1) Josh Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Johnson_(American_football))
His stats at USD where he played for Harbaugh were exceptional. Note that his TD:INT ratio his senior year was 42:1, but Harbaugh was at Stanford that year. He was a fifth round pick and now that Josh Freeman is entrenched in TB, we might be able to get him pretty cheap.
2) Jeff Garcia
I know people will probably say been there done that. But he is a good veteran leader who shouldn't be too cocky considering the way he entered the league. On top of that, he is capable in the WCO. He was part of it while here in SF. He had a great year under it when he went to Philly. And even if he is washed up and done, I'd rather take him sitting on the bench with Carmella DeCesare in the stands than Carr on the bench.

Throw Locker in the fire
and hope he can live. Our line is better against our competition than UW against theirs in pass blocking. Locker should get some time in the pocket and learn on the fly.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Katie Mcgrath is our savior
Jeff Garcia?
Come on he’s 40!!

He’s a better veteran QB to teach a WCO to whoever we draft than Carr, who is our only QB under contract atm.

AND
he has a known history to put unnecessary pressure on young QBs so that they under-perform and he can get the starting job. dont want him on the team anymore. we had a nice stint with him, but his time is up.

My gut reaction is that Harbaugh won’t be interested in Locker— if he declares, I think Newton would be the guy we’d target in the first round.

Josh Johnson
if not then get McNabb or Hasslebeck and draft a QB that Harbaugh can groom

if Pat Devlin is available in the 2nd round or maybe 3rd we should draft him I really like what I see in him and think he would be a good fit in our WCO
Joe Flacco went to Delaware, then went on to play for a Harbaugh, wins in the playoffs
Pat Devlin went to Delaware, goes on to play for a Harbaugh? wins in the playoffs?

at first I didn’t want him but I think he can be a good fit with the WCO like he was with Philly

The guy who touches it the most
I like Josh Johnson, but I like Josh Freeman more, had a feeling he’d be one of the best in his draft class. But we already have a Josh Johnson, his name is Nate Davis. I’d much rather have him back, he wants to come back, they know him in the locker room and he kept his mouth shut when Sing disrespected him.
Nate gives me the same feeling I had when I first saw Freeman. I’m shocked nobody is paying attention to Kellen Moore of Boise St. I’d put $$$ he’ll be better than Locker, Mallet or Gabbert whatever his name is.
Johnson has started before and knows the Harbaugh offense and thrived in it in college, I like Davis but the niners really messed up by not letting him play a regular season game
and nobody talks about Moore mainly because most people think he will stay in college another year

Nate Davis ate himself off the roster. He isn't coming back.
Besides, Harbaugh’s offense is supposedly complex with a huge playbook. Nate probably couldn’t learn it fast enough to be useful.

Locker
I’m not sure I get it. He was what…the 5th best QB in the PAC-10 this year? (Luck, Thomas, Foles, Barkley). If we took him 7 it would be a pretty big leap of faith on his tools and Harbaugh’s scouting and coach-him-up skills. Cuz the production just isn’t that great.
As for Josh Johnson, keep in mind this is the QB that Harbaugh worked with at a non-scholarship school at the I-AA level. He coached him into an NFL prospect, but that doesn’t make him the best guy he can find for the Niners.

qbs
i don’t want the niners to spend a high draft pick on a qb, especially the 1st round pick. none of the guys really seem worth it, especially that guy from missouri. if they do take locker, i’ll shutup just bc i assume harbaugh scouted him a lot bc of the same conference.
i’d like one of these guys to sign for the niners:
kevin kolb
trent edwards
Trent Edwards?
he sucks like pretty bad he only had a few good games with the Bills like 2 years ago
and I’m just not a big fan of Kolb and have never been impressed by him much
by 49erEmpire on Jan 9, 2011 10:07 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
edwards got high recommendations from walsh, and he played at stanford. i don’t think buffalo or jacksonville were a good fit for him.
remember what u said about mcnabb? that’s why i’d take kolb, but i prefer kolb bc of age.
either way, i’m cheap. i don’t want to see the niners give up anything for these guys. i threw their names out if they could come for little.
No
because he won’t be leaving
Stolen from manraj7, with some additions:
1. Jake Locker QB Wasington 2. Jimmy Smith CB Colorado (or Best CB Available) 3. Christian Ballard DE Iowa 4a. Owen Marecic FB/ST Stanford 4b. Kai Forbath K UCLA 5. Running Back 6a. Defensive Lineman 6b. Guard or Center 7. Whatever's left!
Maybe Baalke and Harbaugh can find another Garcia from the CFL. That’s where Garcia came from and with no new CBA that’s the only way to get any players besides the draft in April.

Oh yeah that’s where Warren Moon came from also.

Matt Hasselbeck anyone?
A guy who knows the WCO inside and out and would buy you some time while drafting and grooming the next QB or at the very least give you a solid backup. Not sure about his health though.
i'm still firm on trent edwards
i’m going to blame his poor outings on the buffalo system, and stick with his walsh endorsement. jacksonville isn’t going to help in out at all, he’s an unrestricted fa, i think he comes here cheap and into open arms.
Trent Edwards
Second the TE endorsement. The one caveat is whether he has been beaten up so badly by poor OL play and poor team support that he is now a bit gun shy. But for a backup he is a big improvement over David Carr, Troy Smith, and Nate Davis. He may come cheaply, and if so is a no brainer. Not sure how he fits in as a WCO QB, but it seems to fit his style and intelligence very well.
