Nnamdi Asomugha To Become A Free Agent: Let The 49ers Chatter Begin!

Although the 2011 NFL playoffs are officially underway, Bay Area sports has found a new way to butt in on the conversation. After a week that saw Jim Harbaugh sweep the site into a frenzy, we have a new topic of conversation: newly minted free agent Nnamdi Asomugha. The Oakland Raiders cornerback had certain incentives in his contract that were not met and because of that he will become a free agent when free agency begins at some unknown point in the future. Thanks to Delmuir for the preliminary FanPost on this, as well as brundylop's FanShot.

According to Adam Schefter, Nnamdi had certain incentives he had to reach otherwise his contract would void. Additionally, the language of Nnamdi's contract prevents the Raiders from franchising him, which is obviously a big deal. For those wondering about the contract, it was a three year $45.3 million contract that made him the highest paid DB in NFL history. To reach the necessary incentives, Nnamdi had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009 or improve on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season. He didn't have any of these this year. He missed two games due to injury and that cost him the defensive plays option.

Needless to say Raider Nation is not pleased with this development. When Nnamdi hits the market he'll be the most sought after defensive free agent, and possible overall free agent. I'd imagine the 49ers will be in the mix in some form or fashion. However, there are a couple things to consider. First is when free agency will actually start. Free agency is set to start I believe the first week/weekend in March. However, if a CBA has not been signed at that point, free agency will be delayed indefinitely.

While the NFL Draft will happen even without a CBA (the picks just won't be able to sign), free agency could be pushed well into the summer depending on how negotiations move along. If that's the case it will impact a lot of decisions because then teams will be drafting ahead of signing big name free agents, which is the opposite of the normal process. A guy like Nnamdi will still be pursued, but with a high pick in the upcoming draft, do the 49ers go with a cornerback anyway?

The other issue is of course the money. What's it going to cost to sign arguably the best cornerback in the NFL? Maybe it won't be a record-breaking contract like his previous deal, but it's going to be pricey. Much of this will depend on the cap numbers after a new CBA is announced. A big issue has been the percentage distribution of revenues between players and owners, which affects the salary cap. Does the team want to invest a big chunk of money in one player at this point? It's a hard point to argue at this point given the labor uncertainty, but it's something that will have to be considered at some point down the road.

I can see your point

But to me, Asomugha outranks Clements in multiple ways. Asomugha is a proven shut down corner, in the ranks of Champ Bailey, Darelle Revis, etc. I’ve never considered Clements in that category.

But he's 32, about to be 33 and at the end of his prime...

he’d be solid but not quite the shutdown corner that Asomugha would be. I just wouldn’t want to pay Bailey big-time money and a likely long-term deal when he is likely only going to decline… even though a dimished Champ Bailey is better than anything we have now.

Charles Woodson is 35..

and he’s still going strong. Nnamdi might be similar. 13 completions on his side all year? Worth it to the Niners to at least pick up the phone.

I read

that Champ might want to move to safety to prolong his career.

by Thor W on Jan 9, 2011 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

Nnamdi vs. Nate

Even at his peak, Nate Clements was never considered a classic shutdown corner. He was a very good corner who could tackle well, but he didn’t lock up 1/3 of the field.

by David Fucillo on Jan 9, 2011 12:19 PM PST up reply actions

Who knows?

If they decide to keep Nate and manage to sign Nnamdi, maybe they will bring out the best in each other. But if they need to Release Nate to free up some cap space, than I’m fine with drafting as good a CB as we can and going full throttle to try and sign Nnamdi.

Sorry Miami fans, don't Harbaugh a grudge on us.

by Nick Bays on Jan 9, 2011 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

We

won’t pay upwards toward 25MM for two corners, that just isn’t going to happy. The only way Clements sticks around is if he takes a dramatic pay cut to move to safety or to play in the nickel. I honestly think him moving to safety would be the best career choice for him (see Rod Woodson and Aenas Williams)

by Italia1970 on Jan 9, 2011 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

By that logic, one should never sign any big free agents...

Comparing Asomugha to Clements is a tough one… Clements is solid and we overpaid for him but Asomugha is a generational CB who can absolutely lock his side down. Unless it prevents you from filling other needs, you almost CAN’T overpay for a guy like that.

by Delmuir on Jan 9, 2011 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree...

…I think CBs are overvalued, particularly as free agents. Their performance is too often dependent on the pass rush. Also, because of rule changes re contact, true "shutdown"CBs have become pretty much non-existent in the NFL. I’d rather we put that money into a strong pass rush and draft or sign more economical CBs.

by Bigmouth on Jan 9, 2011 5:53 PM PST up reply actions

I don't

If you can force a team to be one-dimensional you’ve won half the battle. Are pass-rush specialists overrated? Are QBs over-rated?

How should we spend the money on a QB?

Is there some amazing franchise QB available that I don’t know about? Come on… Spend the money, he’ll give us five solid years of years where we might be able to win some of those close games.

by Delmuir on Jan 9, 2011 12:36 PM PST up reply actions

I think

You try your hardest to get this superb corner, and draft one anyway. Clements has a good enough skill set to drop to safety while Mays and R.Smith can rotate in as well. Or keep Clements as a corner and keep him in that rotation as well. Depending on what kind of veteran QB we can get and if there is a QB worth taking at 7, that is.

Sorry Miami fans, don't Harbaugh a grudge on us.

by Nick Bays on Jan 9, 2011 12:03 PM PST reply actions

can't do both

If we want this cat, Clements has to go. NO way we pony up the money for both. I like Asomugha, draft a high rounder (2nd imo), and send Clements packing. Too much money for to few results. freshen up that secondary. The problem is, why would Asomugha come to San Fran? At this point in his career, I’d bet he is going to look for an established team, not one in full on rebuilding mode. here’s hopin though.

No reason not to go after him

If we release Clements, you would be looking at a total annual salary difference in the 5-7MM range, not bad for the best corner in the NFL. This would enable us to move Spencer to the nicke, and still possibly go after Amukamara/Peterson in the 1st. The 49ers weren’t really active in the major free agent scene last offseason, however, with the addition of Harbaugh and our FO new mentality, i see us being much more active this season. Asamugha played for CAL and has been with Oakland his entire career. Needless to say, he is a local boy with ties to the community. If the 49ers are able to offer comparitive amounts of money, i believe that Aamugha would chose the local team first.

Asomugha on the cheap...

I’m certain that he won’t be actually cheap but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I think he’ll sign for a likely winner, longer-term contract that averages out to about $10.5 million a year.

He’s a smart guy who knows that Davis paid him too much (not from performance perspective but from a business one) to field a competitive team, thus he must know that he’ll make less as a free-agent…

Why opt out of a contract that’ll pay him more than he’ll possibly make as a free agent? It doesn’t make sense if he’s only pursuing dollar signs.

Call it a hunch, but I have a good feeling about this one and I hope we sign him at $11 million a year or less.

by Delmuir on Jan 9, 2011 12:22 PM PST reply actions

I think we could do a 5 year deal

good coverage does not make pass rush better it is the other way around. If guys don’t get to the QB they still won’t be able to if the coverage is good. Just more check downs

Really?

Never heard of a coverage sack? Give me a break, they compliment each other. Yes the ideal situation does call for quick pressure on the QB to force bad throws or get the sack. But good coverage also causes indecisiveness and can force the QB told hold on to the ball which also causes sacks. You’d think as a 49er fan you’d know all about that.

Top 10 pick

With the money needed to sign Asomugha and with VD and Willis new contracts we probably wouldn’t be able to pay for a top ten pick. Year one and two would be ok but with each guy getting more money in the latter years of their contracts it would become very expensive. I think the Niners would have to trade down.

QUESTION: When is our QB going to answer questions like "You only threw 4 TD's today. What's wrong with the offense?"
ANSWER: When Andrew Luck ditches the draft and we sign him as an undrafted free agent!!!

CBA

top 10 pick will be pretty cheap. number one overall is looking to get about $15 million guaranteed max somewhere between $20-25. #7 will probably be $10 mil guaranteed or less.

Deion was probably the last true shutdown CB in the NFL...

…because they changed the rule in 2004(?) to restrict contact after 5 yards. Also, teams now play so much zone that 1-1 matchups are rare.

by Bigmouth on Jan 9, 2011 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

I'd like to see the NFL

move to allowing 6 eligible WRs. This will almost elminated zone and force teams to back to man coverage. A side benefit will be far fewer nasty hits on wide receivers coming across the middle

by smileyman on Jan 9, 2011 6:26 PM PST up reply actions

just becuase 6 eligible is allowed

doesn’t mean that it’ll be used on every single play. you don’t see 5 eligible all that often right now. it’s a good way to get more zone, which means defenders will have to learn how to defend man.

If you blitz on a play with 6 wrs you deserve whatever bad things happen to you.

There are 4 positions that are crucial to have and you must pay a premium: QB, DE, LT, CB. The Niners have one of those. It’s time to address the others.

Maybe even $11.5 for five years.

I just wouldn’t want to go higher as we have other people we need to sign and other holes that need to be filled.

Still, imagine the trickle-down effect he’d have on our defense as a whole!

by Delmuir on Jan 9, 2011 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

Upon further review...

we might not want to get our hopes up.

The contract termination was automatic and wasn’t optioned by Nnamdi or the Raiders. Nnamdi has show a loyalty to the Raiders in spite of their dysfunction and might be inclined to stay there although I’ve read that he was a big fan of Tom Cable and was disappointed in him being fired.

If he was disenfranchised enough by Cable’s firing then maybe his loyalty to the Raiders organization will breakdown a bit. He’s still very loyal to the bay area and his charity work so maybe that combination of factors will make it possible for the niners to have a real shot at signing him.

I have my reservations as to whether we can, or even want, to sign him but if he’s available and interested I hope we do.

A shutdown CB trickles down to improving the entire defense including stopping the run and getting a pass-rush.

having a shutdown corner like Nnamdi can be counterproductive

If you guys don’t remember when Nnamdi had Hall on the other side of the field Hall was absolutely abused every single game since they didn’t throw to Nnamdi’s side. Our secondary would still be in trouble unless we can get a better safety (Dashon .) and a stronger CB to be opposite Nnamdi. I wouldn’t trust Spencer or a rookie playing opposite Nnamdi and having to defend 15+ passes every game going towards him. Nnamdi would be a great pickup but let’s hope we get additional help as well.

i definitely agree nate is our best corner

and I’m not too sure about what his contract is really like but I am sure that people exaggerate how much he is getting paid. I mean people are disappointed that he isn’t a shutdown corner yet we paid him like one but now with a shutdown corner like Nnamdi, Clements playing opposite of him is exactly how he should be playing on a depth chart anyway. He’s good enough to be a starter on any team and with a talent like Nnamdi, he would definitely NOT be a liability going against number 2 receivers. He can’t cover the Reggie Waynes of the league but he can definitely cover the Josh Morgans.

Niners, Lakers and the Warriors... when Lakers have the night off.

by afrikabamboodle on Jan 9, 2011 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

And how many true shutdown corners can you even name? There aren’t that many out there. I get what his expectations were because I had them too, but he has still been solid in many aspects. I think he looks bad at times because he has the freedom to gamble a bit and rarely gets the safety help up top to compensate. He has definitely had his share of boneheaded plays though. That deep ball a couple weeks ago stands out in my mind, where it appeared he had a clear pick and some how whiffed entirely and the pass was completed. But I think with a shutdown on the other side and more safety focus over Nate it would be nice.

A shutdown corner only limits the production of the offense. Hall got abused because he’s past his prime and not a lockdown man to man cover guy anymore. Raiders didn’t use him right.

I was also curious as to why the Raiders would have a contract set up with an auto termination clause

When Nnamdi gets so few balls thrown in his direction how is he supposed to meet the number of plays, interceptions or fumbles required? Is it to protect against some sort of decline they might fear he was going to have or just bad planning?

Clements takes a pay cut? He’s at what, $11 mil a year, right? If he’ll take a cut and stay, and we pull off the long shot and get N/A, I STILL say add one in the draft. That is depth, Clements can move around to safety, we shore up the secondary, and can go hunting for some
LB depth. And OL depth. And a RB with some golden hands and a high upside. And a QB. And another QB…..You get the idea.

Our LB depth and OL depth is solid...

We used just about every one of our offensive linemen this season at one point or another, and are at least comfortable at LB… Remember, McKillop will come back next season, and he and Bowman make for excellent depth…

We need a Dexter McCluster type back and a QB, but I’d have to say that the starters at certain positions are a MUCH bigger issue than the depth…

Spencer is the one who get beat every play & can’t tackle, clements lead our secondary in tackles….

As for Nnamdi he’s good an all but I’ll rather try to get ronde barber & champ for about 20_25 million for both of them plus extra cash for other free agents than spending 40_50+ million jus for Nnamdi. jus my opinion

i can’t see any justification in signing players that old for more than a supportive role. and there’s already talk in denver of converting bailey to safety.

right on about spencer though. we don’t have just one need on defense. we could use an upgrade to the system (ie, coaching) more than the parts.

Sup everybody

Hey there. Been following the forums since the start of the season and been a Niner fan since the early 90’s. First off i just wanted to say you guys are hilarious. All the Harbaugh puns were great. Now, I’m all for signing Asomugha and drafting a corner, and letting spencer and clements go, I’ve never really been high on Spencer and even though I like Clements as a #2 corner he is way overpaid. The only way I’d keep him is if he’d restructure his contract. I say get Asomugha and Kolb and we’d already be significantly upgraded at two important positions. The funniest thing about this is my buddy is a huge Raiders fan and he went off on a rant today that if they don’t re-sign Asomugha he’s switching teams to whoever signs him. Totally fed up with Al Davis’s B.S. I told him we’d sign him and then he’d just have to move across the bay :)

by NoDakNiner on Jan 9, 2011 10:03 PM PST reply actions

First thought was: "just sign him", second tought was....

… but then Nate Clements will get abused on the other side a lot more often than now. If we let Clements go (which seem unlikely, but could happen), who are we going to get who will be able to handle all the attention?
