49ers Sign Former Packers WR Brett Swain
The 49ers have reportedly made their roster move to replace WR Joshua Morgan for the short term. While the 49ers have not yet made it official, reports indicate they are going to sign wide receiver Brett Swain this week. Swain was a member of the Super Bowl winning Packers this past year but was cut by the team in their final roster cuts. The 49ers brought in several players for workouts, including T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chris Chambers, but settled on Swain.
This signing makes sense in the context of the team's needs. brett Swain led the Packers in special teams tackles in last year's Super Bowl and I would imagine he will see a fair amount of special teams play in the coming weeks. The team will move Ted Ginn Jr. and Kyle Williams further up the depth chart rather than try and jam in somebody else opposite Michael Crabtree.
The 49ers will need to make a roster move to make space and my guess is Colin Jones likely gets waived and sent back to the practice squad (if he clears waivers). The team could place Morgan on injured reserve still, which would also clear up a roster move. Once the 49ers make it official, we'll know more about the corresponding roster move.

keep Norris as a backup?
Although, I can’t see Norris playing special teams, so why do they keep him on the roster?
Don't think you can cut an injured player - can you??
Re: Joshua’s roster spot – does the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) option go out the window once regular season starts? Thinking maybe so since nobodies brought it up. Just a thought!
ps: we’re gonna beat the Lions – it may get a little close for a minute, but it will be decisive in the end. Mark it down. (Watched most of their tussle with the Bears. Cannot see how in the world they have the record they do.)
Depending on how Ginn and Williams do, assuming they cover well for him, he will probably go on IR.
He’ll be a free agent next season though, so it’s sort of a tricky deal.

Norris
I’m honestly not sure what they’re going to do with Norris at this point. Makes sense to cut him, but they’re hanging on to him for now.

what for? we don’t need 2 FB’s on our roster. Norris is otherwise eating up valuable space, which I guess is nothing new…all considering. Still..,

Two words...
Trade bait. As more teams try to install a power run game, decent FB’s are a premium. Moran might not remind anyone of Mike Alstott, but he’s better than Ahmad Hall from TN. In the right system, a team might think he’d be a great addition. Especially one that needs a vet FB with a middling contract. For the Niners it’s win/win as 1) we lossen up another roster spot for a player we need. 2) depending on what we ask for in return, there’s no telling what trading Moran might bring our way. Trade deadline is next week. Phones are open.

Perhaps we can get a 7th round pick in 2015!
Seriously though.. Anything we could get for him would be an unexpected bonus but I would faint if they actually did it.
No… We have Norris for life.
2015 might be a little soon
2035 and I think you could get a deal
If the niners release Norris...
He will be done in the NFL. Can’t catch, whiff as a lead blocker, and adds 0 to special team. A total waste of space.

lol
nobody is going to trade for a fullback. We would get another 2013 7th round pick.
Call me cautiously optimistic....because I know what the Niners do to people who have real optimism (see the last 8 years).
Do you really think ...
that they feel safe enough having Miller as their only option at FB? Trust me I love “Miller Time!” but we don’t have a full TE corps (most importantly Byham) to back him up if he hits some rookie rough roads. Just thinking that may be the mindset going on as far as Norris.
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Oct 11, 2011 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions
I think if we still had Byham , Norris wouldn't be here ...even thou he wasn't a Fb , he was a Hb and it wouldn't be a huge transition to the back up Fb ...!!
I'm your " Huckelberry "...it's just my game ...Jimmy Raye your no daisy ...!!
Actually...
Miller didn’t play a whole lot against Tampa Bay. They put Walker in motion for most of the traditional FB blocking assignments on the running plays. Walker has done an amazing job all the way around this season. He’s a very good blocker especially on the sweeps. Peele has taken up the traditional ‘blocking TE’ role blocking on the line and has done a really good job to date.
miller was lead blocking 40 yards downfield on Hunters 44 yard run.
And catches the ball. Norris whiffs on blocks and cannot catch. No brainer here.
by wtlichens on Oct 11, 2011 8:30 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
I like to imagine what was going on in Miller’s head, as him fighting the defensive urges to tackle the RB. So something a little like this
“oo look he has the ball! Tackle him! Wait Don’t tackle!…Maybe a little trip..No, don’t touch him, protect him! Oooo, there’s a guy in white! I can hit him! Coach told me so!!!”
As a geologist, I talk to rocks. And they talk back, and they are telling me, "This year the San Fransisco 49ers are going to be some Gneiss Schist!"
CB9er, if we were to waive Norris, I can almost guarantee that no other team picks him up...
If, God forbid, something should happen to Miller, we could then bring Norris back…
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
Possibly chemistry?
I know pretty much all Niners fans are ready to be done with Norris but the players seem to like him (especially Gore). The chemistry on the team appears to be really good right now, maybe the team doesn’t want to risk messing with that by cutting a veteran while he’s injured to make room for a stop gap replacement.
But personally I wouldn’t mind letting Norris go and making Miller’s ascension official.
roster spot for a mascot?
why don’t we sign rudy?
You hit it
Frank LOVES this guy and he’s a locker room parent. Guys look up to him. He works his butt off and you need “glue guys” like him to round out a team. Also, when the time comes and you need a battering ram for one yard he’s no where near as bad as his been made out to be. Against a team like Detroit with that front – he will likely play a big role.
I wonder how info Swain can give the coaches on the Lions
probably not alot but every little bit help
I expect Crabtree to have a big game

Yeah, I was kind of expecting it against TB to be honest.
He does well on those high throws Alex keeps tossing to him, but otherwise, he doesn’t seem to be making a splash.
His blocking has been great though, so it’s not like he’s a waste of space.
no... he has his place...
I just think Crabs is destined to be a really good number 2. He’s Anquan… Braylon can hopefully be our Larry… He’s more Steve Smith than he is Hakeem Nicks… Am I making sense? I just don’t think he has the kind of ability that scares a defense… But force a lesser corner to cover him, and then he can make some scary stuff happen.

He shouldve scored 2 TD
but one time he got tackled and another the CB pulled down his Left arm so he couldn’t grab that high pass.

When Jim Harbaugh says "more is more" I think he is trying to say Moore is more.
From what we've seen so far I'd have to agree
He looks like he’s got some good moves in the open field, but he seems to be lacking the explosiveness to get there consistently. And it’s not like he’s so big and strong that he can consistently outmuscle defenders in the open field and in fights for the ball. Crabtree looks like a solid player, but honestly I was more excited about Morgan prior to the injury.

That’s all a long way of saying I think one thing the team really could use is a true No. 1 weapon at WR. Maybe Braylon can fill that role this year when he comes back, but receiver could very well be addressed early and often in the draft/FA this year.

As of now I see our first two rounds next year being some form of DB/WR.
I really don’t think Braylon is the answer; he’s had one good year.
by InTimmyWeTrust on Oct 12, 2011 2:23 AM PDT up reply actions
The lack of explosiveness may be a result of never being full-strength for an extended period
If the foot ever heals 100% (this off-season perhaps) and he can train with as much intensity and volume as he wants, maybe he’ll gain a little more explosion off the line than we have seen so far

Hmmm, I really don't know much about Swain
I guess he’s got three years experience in a west coast offense so that could help. The Packers are pretty stacked at receiver so failing to hang on to his roster spot isn’t too big a black mark for Swain. Just goes to show, when you’re sifting through the mess of street free agents you’re probably not going to find anything too exciting.
Also he got to learn behind really pros like Greg Jennings & Donald Driver and he got to catch passes from Rogers so I expect him to be a real professional and crisp route runner
Just checked his stats (what there is of them)
Although he has appeared in 22 games he has only caught 6 balls for 72 yds.. So who knows what he can contribute. My guess is that he will set back on the depth chart a 2 or 3 wks and see how Edwards comes along after his injury. Like most of you I don’t expect to see much of Swain, but who knows this year has been full of surprises mostly good.

The more the time Kyle has on the field the more I think you will see Coach Harbaugh & Coach Roman utilize him properly
I have really noticed how well they have taken the players we have on this team and adapt the offense to exploits their strengths and Kyle is no different. They will take his skills and make this offense more versatile
Kyle Williams could be
the next Wes Welker but faster!!!

Me too
and we will according to a post from Matt Maiocco sharing that the Niners never put 4 WR’s on the field at the same time (they go 4 wide by using D Walker in the slot) so we should see lots of all three: Crab, Kyle and Ginn because Swain won’t be used as a reciever. Swain is known to be a Special Team Head Hunter.
I like the 3 WR sets
and using Walker or VD in the slot when we spread the D out. Actually prefer that to having 4 WRs because a TE lined up as a WR creates huge mismatches.
For sure
Maybe put Crabs and VD outside on a play and Kyle Williams in the slot with D walker in as a TE I think that would be pretty legit!

People seem to love Kyle Williams around here...
my question is why?
Besides the really nice TD catch earlier this year, nothing about this guy has stood out for me. I’m not saying he sucks or anything but everyone seems unusually high on him around here. I watch quite a bit of Pac-10 football and he wasn’t even a guy that I remember hearing/seeing in college.

athletic ability...
and a type of offensive threat that many nfl teams utilize well, that the niners have lacked for a while now. Smaller, with speed and agility, able to work underneath and create mismatches that no one else on the team can. It is about potential… not much else.

been reading a lot of comments about ky, and i think you really hit the nail with this one. What I like about bringing in ky is that he simply provides something different. He could very well be if defenses continue to stack the box to stop the run or roll coverage to defend Vernon & Crabtree which would leave Kyle in obvious man to man coverage
Were you M.I.A in preseason?
Have you not watched his highlights from college?
He has Desean Jackson type potential. And he’ll get there under Harbaugh. they guy does not miss a pass.

lots of upside
Swain comes from a winning organization, good special teams player, and knows the WCO.. With him being the 5th or 6th man in a very talented receiving corps like the Packers, I’m pretty sure he went up against the ones in defense practices such as Charles Woodson, Sam Shields, etc. The guy has a lot of potential for the future of 49ers.
