NFL Power Rankings, Week 6: Mock Me If You Must

Last week as we were discussing some of the various NFL power rankings around the web, I posted some of my own power rankings, put together for SB Nation Bay Area. I had the 49ers ranked No. 16 as the lowest ranked 3-1 team in the league. That was based in part on my concerns about some of the team's weaknesses following some close victories, and also based on some of the wins around them.

Well, a week later, I've rectified the ranking to some extent. In my latest NFL power rankings, I bumped the 49ers up from No. 16 to No. 10 (you can view the top ten after the jump). I kept the Raiders and Redskins ahead of the 49ers even though you could make a reasonable argument that the 49ers probably belong ahead of them.

I'm actually really high on this particular Raiders team and I also like what Washington is putting together. Part of the reason they remain ahead of the 49ers is they were ahead of them last week and I felt they did enough to stay there. Well, Oakland did enough with their road win and Washington has done enough that I didn't want to drop them below for now. If the 49ers beat the Lions this coming Sunday, though, there's no doubt the 49ers will get another solid bump no matter how the other teams ahead of them perform. If the 49ers beat Detroit on the road and Oakland beats Cleveland, the 49ers move ahead of Oakland. Pretty plain and simple.

The 49ers in general are getting more respect in the media, even if it doesn't translate to extensive highlights. ESPN bumped them seven spots to No. 9. CBS Sports increased them three spots to No. 13. SB Nation's NFL Power Rankings have them at No. 8. I could go on and on, but you get the point. People are starting to recognize the 49ers are not a fluke.

Raiders

Big win on the road. Struggled in the Pats loss but I still really like them…I probably am overrating them a little bit, but I like them.

by David Fucillo on Oct 11, 2011 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions

like the Niners, the Raiders have been down for a while

No reason not to show them a little love with what may be a slight over-rating on the power ranking.

I look forward to the days of the Niners being consistently in the top 3 in the rankings, but until then the only thing that really matters is winning and improving. The rest will come with time. Once we stack up enough wins, others will not be able to ignore us.

Here comes the delusion. 10 is a good place for them, maybe a little lower

Like how a lot of people on here (see: most) are pretty delusional about everything, especially this week’s game thread when many people agreed that they wouldn’t trade Alex Smith for any QB in the league besides the big 4.

I mainly say it because then when I’m less optimistic than the sheer delusion, I get called a troll who’s a bad fan

No, you don't.

We only say that because you can NEVER seem to find anything good to say about the Niners. Ever. Following a great win, you can’t celebrate it because you start talking about how bad you think we will get beat next week by whoever we play. I don’t remember very many times when you say anything positive about our team. Which is baffling to most people.

There is a difference between being pessimistic and being a hater. Even in that comment, you had to throw a jab and make it clear you don’t like Alex. We know. Like I said, anything except a 55 point Super Bowl blowout, and I’m willing to bet you will have lots of “less optimisitc” things to say. You act like you don’t and can’t see a difference in this year’s team to last.

Contrary to what you think, it IS okay to give credit, props, and compliments to the team you cheer for. Especially when they have clearly EARNED it. Even Alex.

They would find excuses even in a 55 point Super Bowl blowout…

“Alex had a fluke day”
and so on.

Clutchtree, I know you like to be the voice of reason, but 10 is a low estimate for how the Niners are doing right now.

They really should be around 5, and I think Fooch is just hedging here a little bit because he’s avoiding being a homer.

Actually not a closet Raiders fan. I like the team they put on the field but not a Raiders fan. As for the Redskins moving up, teams around them lost which dropped those teams and helped bump up the Redskins without playing.

by Jaxson876 on Oct 11, 2011 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Btw, I meant no disrespect when I said you were hedging.

I think it’s very reasonable to be cautious about the Niners play, especially when they’ve only been elite one game, and Tampa was obviously totally unprepared for what Harbaugh had in store for them. The Lions may be more prepared, especially after seeing what a functional Niners team looks like and the playcalling involved.

I still think the Niners are better than 10, but I don’t think it’s an unreasonable ranking. What I think is weird is putting the Lions at #2. I personally think they should barely be in the top ten.

by Rhombus on Oct 11, 2011 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Lions

No offense taken.

I think I am hedging a bit with the 49ers but more willing to buy into other teams like the Lions and Raiders since I don’t have the same attachments. If I don’t overrate the 49ers they can’t destroy me quite as much with a loss.

Honestly most 49ers fans I’ve read on here are pretty down to earth on their team, other teams, and expectations. I’ve read your posts and they’re garbage.

Sorry for the swearing man. lol

Our blog is more relaxed on that policy. Common Detroit mentality I suppose. In regards to his post though, if the roles were reversed, I’d definitely put you guys #2. Record means everything this league, and even if I felt maybe you guys were worse than the Saints or NE that doesn’t mean I totally neglect you and put you behind 3-2 4-1 teams outside of the top 10.

You guys do have some great fans though, very knoweldgeable — which leads to good discussion. I’m not taking your team lightly and at 4-1 I’d definitely put you guys top 8 or 7.

no worries

I think record means everything over the course of the whole season, but I don’t think putting a 4-1 team behind a 3-2 team right now is exactly crazy talk. Some teams have played weaker teams. Some teams have barely won games. There are a lot of things to consider. At least for me.

by David Fucillo on Oct 12, 2011 12:12 AM PDT up reply actions

At this time I see your point

A few more games and I think records will start to justify ranking order. You guys are definitely better than the Raiders though… They’re a running team and you guys stop the run effectively. I was surprised you didn’t put yourself at #8. The Redskins couldn’t even beat a hurt Romo and Dez Bryant.

I said barely in the top ten, which means I'd rank them around #8 or #9.

They’re 5-0, but hardly dominant. Like I’ve said many times, I think the Lions are a good team, but they’ve had the 5th-easiest schedule in the league, and haven’t looked great doing so except against the hapless Chiefs.

By comparison, the Niners have had the 7th-easiest schedule, and dominated the good-but-not-great Bucs. They’re comparable teams, but in terms of recent performance and relative dominance, which is how I would do my subjective power rankings, I’d rank the Niners a little bit higher than the Lions.

I don’t think that’s a garbage opinion, and I certainly don’t mean any disrespect to the Lions organization. I know the Niners weaknesses, and last year it was almost completely on the coaches. Now that that’s fixed, the Niners have far fewer problems and no gaping holes. At every position, the Niners are average-to-above average. That’s why I’d rank them as a top 10 team with upside. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable assessment.

by Rhombus on Oct 12, 2011 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I would much rather us be lower and prove that we are good on this season-changing upcoming game rather than have us overranked and possibly lose bad then just be an afterthought

this is what they said about us
San Francisco: The DVOA system loves big, dominating wins, and the 49ers certainly had one this week. That stomping of Tampa Bay lifts them all the way up from 11th to second. That being said, San Francisco had a pretty good rating even before this win. The 49ers are not going to stumble into the playoffs as an 8-8 champion in a bad division. Based on current opponent adjustments, the 49ers are one of only two teams with positive DVOA in all five games this season (Buffalo being the other; Green Bay’s DVOA in Week 3 was -0.8%). They are one overtime loss away from being undefeated. The 49ers are winning big with defense and special teams, ranking second in both, and have been shockingly efficient in the passing game this year, ranking seventh in pass offense DVOA. No, I don’t think the 49ers are truly better than the Packers, Patriots, or Steelers (and those teams are all higher in DAVE) but we need to be taking them seriously as more than just first-round playoff bait. On the other hand, their DVOA will probably go down as the opponent adjustments get stronger, as they rank 26th in schedule so far and dead last in schedule remaining.

One thing to watch for in the future: Detroit right now is dead last in first-quarter offense, one of the elements in “estimated wins.” Scoring in the first quarter helps you dictate the pace of the whole game, and if the Lions could fix that problem, they wouldn’t be stuck in so many close games right now.

What is DVOA?

"Our opponents are nameless and faceless" - Jim Harbaugh
Twitter

by Blowfish on Oct 11, 2011 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

DVOA

Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average.

Here’s the short explanation:

DVOA is a method of evaluating teams, units, or players. It takes every single play during the NFL season and compares each one to a league-average baseline based on situation. DVOA measures not just yardage, but yardage towards a first down: five yards on third-and-4 are worth more than five yards on first-and-10 and much more than five yards on third-and-12. Red zone plays are worth more than other plays. Performance is also adjusted for the quality of the opponent. DVOA is a percentage, so a team with a DVOA of 10.0% is 10 percent better than the average team, and a quarterback with a DVOA of -20.0% is 20 percent worse than the average quarterback. Because DVOA measures scoring, defenses are better when they are negative.

One thing that surprised me about their blurb on the Niners is that they don't think the 49ers are truly better than Pittsburgh.

I think a lot of teams are better than the Steelers this year, and to say the Niners are not better than them seems a little weird after their database puts them a full 15% higher. NE and GB? I’m okay with that.

Typically

A “squib kick” is to get the ball in the hands of someone not used to/ expecting to return it. As we saw, it worked out well.

Niners are better than the Chargers, the Bills, the Redskins and the Raiders

and the Pats, and the Lions, and the Ravens, and the Saints, and the Packers. Okay, maybe not the Packers, but equal with the Packers.

Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)

Detroit is running their mouths

Over at their site – I’m actually a little pissed, tbh.

Actions speak louder than words

And the Niners will be doing all the ‘talking" Sun. Besides, Lions fans have suffered more than most fans. They had an 0-16 season remember. Let them enjoy themselves. They’ll be forced to recognize soon enough.

THE LIONS ARE GOING DOWN!

by whatsURdeal on Oct 11, 2011 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree. I think it's perfectly fine for Lions fans to be overconfident right now.

They’re feeling the same rush we are, a team that’s been down in the dumps for a while is now a true playoff contender. If it weren’t for the fact that we’re playing them next week, I’d be all for them going 10-0, and I’d be rooting for them against the Pack on Thanksgiving. I love how this team has really turned it around, I think it’s a great story. After we beat them, I’ll be happy to go back to rooting for their team again. I think they do need to get knocked down a peg or two, however, and I think the Niners are the perfect team to do that.

That guy is just dumb....

I love how he spouts off all of these stats like he knows everything, and blah blah blah, but then follows it up with, “well, i’ve never actually seen any of their games” lol

by sanfranfanmdk on Oct 11, 2011 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

let them run their mouths; I think they’re actually scared of us after we put a monstrous thumping on Tampa…w/out Braylon and Soap.

In fact, I think the Niners give them the willies…they just won’t admit it

He had another stat saying we had 19 passes defensed

Don’t they have the league leading 40 passes defensed.

And comparing Urlacher and Briggs to Willis and Bowman is freaking laughable. Those two wish they were as athletic as Willis and Bowman.

This will be a big test for the Niners but the Lions will be shocked to see how good this defense is.

Eh

At the end he says he hasn’t watch a game, but clearly respects us.

I think it is funny he mentions he’s not sure what we do to stop the run if we pound 8 in the box or what.

Don’t need 8 when you got 52. 27 straight games without a 100 yard rusher isn’t just stuffing 8 in the box.

We really don't and neither do you guys.

We don’t get credit because our team sucked for so long, and if we haven’t played the Saints, GB, or NE people will say "but who have they really played? Playing you guys, if we beat you, people will just revert back to this phrase and discount you guys even more.

You guys don’t get credit because of your opponents as well, past record, and the fact that your division is pure shit (I’m putting that nicely).

Until either team is in double digit wins, or takes down a LEGIT super bowl contender like the three mentioned we won’t get credit. Hell, my team just beat the defending NFC North Champions and we still hear " are the lions for real "

going 0-16 never helps the public image of a franchise, but it is true; both our clubs have been awful for far too long.

I guess it also helped when Matt Millen got chased out of town…

by Doni S on Oct 12, 2011 11:52 AM PDT via iPhone app up reply actions

well, don't be

i saw a lot of hate-comments from buc fans leading up to the game this past sunday. the result was 48-3. i wonder how those fans are feeling now.

let’s just wait and see what happens. my best guess is, the 49ers win because of two reasons: 1) alex is playing good ‘no turnovers’ football, and 2) the 49ers D is the real deal as there run defense is unbelievably good. in fact, i’m not sure which one i find more surprising, number 1 or 2.

GO 49ERS! and GO ALEX!

Doesn't matter at all where we are ranked

Right now.. because if we lose this weekend we will be like at 13.. If we win will be in the top 5 most def right fooch? I just want to beat Detroit then we don’t have to sell or persuade anyone how good we are.. Smack up those lions at home and its basically niners sharing the spot light with the top 5 till the ravens game.. Where everyone will want to test us again….

Bills lost to Cincy…we didn’t. How do you figure they’re better than us other than a ‘w’ against NE?

by Doni S on Oct 11, 2011 8:07 PM PDT via iPhone app reply actions

The whole "beating a team means we're better than them" is a very bad arguement.

By that logic:

JAC > TEN > BAL

and Jacksonville is a superior team to the Ravens.

And here’s a paradox for you:

TEN > BAL
BAL > PIT
PIT > TEN
PIT > TEN > BAL > PIT?

This

is a good point that many people don’t understand, its also the reason Dallas isn’t ranked in front of us.

Pretty sure Tony Romo is the reason Dallas isn’t ranked in front of us. Cost them 2/5 games with pure stupidity

week to week

Anything can happen in a given week. I think it can be considered but I look at it more as a tiebreaker.

by David Fucillo on Oct 11, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

ok, fine…it’s a wash. But I still think we’re better than Buffalo; Fred Jackson & Spiller wouldn’t sniff 60 yards against our run D.

Resident Dallas Cowboy fan here.

Congrats on the big win against Tampa Bay. The Niners are finally starting to get the respect they deserve. Good luck against the Lions.

Some interesting rankings

My completely unsolicited top 10

1.) Green Bay
2.) New England
3.) New Orleans
4.) Baltimore
5.) San Diego
6.) San Francisco
7.) Buffalo
8.) Detroit
9.) Pittsburgh
10.)Tennessee

Rankings are purely subjective and an opinion....

but, in my eyes, the ’Skins are not a better team than the Niners. I really believe the difference will be night and day when we do play them.

The other one I’m having a hard time with is the Ravens. I know they’ve been a powerhouse for a long time and they have great coaching and still a very talented defense, but something about them just screams overrated. The defense holds that team together way too much when the offense should really be what’s carrying them now. Rice is incredible, but Flacco still leaves something to be desired at this point. I think they should have dropped lower in the rankings across the board with Steelers and Bengals winning.

I’ll say that a big win against Detroit would boost us to #2 in my eyes. If we squeek one out, #3 or 4 depending on what the Pats and Saints do.

by 9thevolution on Oct 12, 2011 6:48 AM PDT reply actions

Wish we were ranked 20th

we need the “us against the world” mentality. We’re a young team and even the vets are cast-offs who aren’t used to a lot of success.

We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

rankings

way to give it to the guy for some rankings lol. i think 10 is high enough for now, you better beieve if we went 12-4 or 11-5 he would rank us top 5 for sure. i think hes just trying to be objective here, which is necessary when doing rankings. i dont like the skins and raiders ahead of the niners either but at this point its just some speculation which is always fun to do. the lions are all that matters at this point should be our most physical game to date.

rankings

i dont think we are in the same class as the pats or packers or any of the top 5 teams in the league yet. i think its important as a niners fan this yr to always have a good perspective on things even during games. for example when gore fumbles the ball its easy in the moment to panic or rant and rave (like i used to lol) or even when the bucs drove it down on us and kicked the field goal. you have to let things play out a lil like when we were up two scores on the cowboys i let myself think we had won the game already and got really pumped up. guess how much that loss hurt me? i didnt watch anything sports related for a week and a half to save myself from the romo is a hero crap. just saying lets let the season play out a lil bit before we talk superbowl or being ranked number 2 even making the playoff at this point. the only thing we have guaranteed is that we have 4 wins at the end of the yr and we have a huge test this weekend in the road.
