Aldon Smith Gets More Playing Time...Who Gets Less?

This last game on Sunday was a sort of coming out party for rookie OLB/DE Aldon Smith. He had shown a knack for getting to the quarterback in the preseason, but he had failed to produce until the game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was involved in more than 50% of the plays on defense, and the vote of confidence from the coaches paid off with a one and a half sack performance to lead the team.

So, with Aldon getting some more snaps, the question becomes which player will get less playing time as he gets more? Both Parys Haralson and Ahmed Brooks have been very good for the 49ers so far this season. The fact that Smith has still been given more time in spite of their solid efforts is a testament to how much faith the team has in Smith.

I would argue that the player who will play less will end up being Ahmed Brooks. Most of us are already well aware of his penchant for jumping offsides at just the wrong moment, but that isn't why I think it will be him. Parys Haralson has been playing rock solid football on his edge of the defense. He has two sacks and two forced fumbles, and he has made his mark in the running game, as well.

There are 31 other teams that wish they had our problem, here. All three guys will get playing time, and I expect all three to contribute in a positive way. So, who will sit the most?

I'm not really sure who it will be

It is nice problem to have. I think of the two Aldon and Ahmad are most alike. I can see both aldon and ahmad staying in as pass rushers in third down situations with haralson coming out. I would prefer the keep haralson in because I think he is better in coverage than either of the two.

Lawson

The decision to let Lawson walk and draft Aldon Smith shows the coaches believe rushing the QB is more important than coverage. They have already been taking Haralson out and keeping Brooks in,

Call me cautiously optimistic....because I know what the Niners do to people who have real optimism (see the last 8 years).

Rec'd, great observation!

Not one I had come to, but makes a lot of sense in retrospect.

Brooks is a BEAST!

I just wish he would line up right and keep is eye on the ball being snapped!

Yes, less time for Parys

He’s playing great and he’s even said keeping him fresh helps a lot, so it only makes since to sub him out. I think it’s great that we have so many Def players playing well. Rotating them in and out gives Offenses more to think about and also keeps the legs fresh for these guys and they can give their absolute all on each play. I love what we have going!

Haralson should lose the time, this is an easy 1.

until he can learn to stay onsides

We kept him to start, besides hes a better playmaker.

i don't disagree with any of that

But when he’s racking up more penalties than sacks, that’s a problem

by Andrew9erfan on Oct 5, 2011 6:58 AM PDT up reply actions

He’s a better overall player despite that.

Aldon looks VERY GOOD...

Don’t think we would have drafted him at #7 without the rookie cap. That would have been too much $$$ to throw at a player who may/may not work out as an every down 3-4 OLB.

But w/the cap, it looks like a great pick. HE LOOKS LIKE A PASS RUSHING BEAST.
Fast, strong, long arms, great leverage, relentless…

Been a LONG time since I’ve seen a 49ers pass rusher come off the edge like Aldon…

Fun-to-watch!!!

The way he looks,

it would’ve been worth picking him at 7 even with the old structure, IMHO.

going off of the money thing, who would have been better value dollar wise at number seven?

Blitz?

Maybe if we’re going with a standard kind of blitz, then Brooks and Smith should bring it and Harrleson sits. They are better pure pass rushers than Harrelsen is, although I’m not saying he’s bad.

Other than the “standard” blitz (where you don’t have players in effect exchanging positions to fool the offense by hiding the scheme) then Brooks and Smith can alternate on one side with Harrleson — being the better cover guy at this point — on the other.

true

unless the game is on the line, and then we might not want Brooks in at all due to his tendency to jump offsides. Sort of kidding…

Come on, Alex, please be good this year..

by Jesse Reed on Oct 4, 2011 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Gotta go with Haralson since they play the same position and were already splitting time.

Brooks (when he isn’t jumping offsides) is probably our best pass rusher as far as OLB goes. In Fangio’s scheme, that is priority number one for those guys.

It's not a matter of anything other than Ahmad Brooks' ability - or inability - to play on the right side.

Because Aldon looked better on the left side on Sunday. Brooks, in my mind, is better than Haralson. So it will depend on Brooks to see if he can play the right side.

And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja

Smith played the right side pretty much the whole game.

I don’t recall a play where he played on the left. He lined up behind Justin Smith pretty much all game (which is the right side).

The Niners were in nickel defense more often than not.

It was just a strategy to combat Michael Vick, nothing long-term. Aldon is still an OLB.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

by these3words on Oct 6, 2011 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Freeman is good but we will definitely be in more base this week as opposed to last with Vick. The Bucs are a much more balanced team on offense and they don’t abandon the run.

I wouldn't put too much stock in Aldon looking better from the left side.

The Eagles current starting Right Tackle was playing Left Guard until 5 weeks ago, and their starting Right Guard was claimed off waivers from the Colts right before the season started.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

Better on the left side? Not last game

Aldon looked better on the left side on Sunday

Per Fooch’s snap-by-snap analysis, all 2.5 of Aldon’s sacks last game (yeah, one was nullified due to an offside by Brooks, but I’ll count it anyway) were when he was lined up at RDE, not LDE. As far as non-sack play went, Aldon often had good pressure on both sides.

When on the right, Aldon was lined up against LT Peters or TE Celek. When lined up left, he was almost always against RT Todd Herremans. May be the players he was up against were the difference between getting pressures versus getting sacks, but Aldon earned his spot playing on the right, not the left. Hoever, I don’t think Aldon’s effectiveness will be limited to either side; I think he’ll grow into a monster wherever he’s used.

That said, Brooks will lose a game for us at some point this season if the offside penalties continue, keeping drives alive for the opposition on third downs; he could well have cost us this last game. Haralson is playing well all three downs. As Aldon gains experience and effectiveness in the coverage downs, I’d consider replacing Brooks with Aldon on those downs and only bringing Brooks in on third down to replace Haralson. If nothing else, it would send a message to Brooks and the entire team that habitual sloppy play won’t earn you playing time.

brooks plays consistently at a higher level than haralson. brooks also has a few pd’s were haralson has none. Brooks just needs to stay onside which he will get down.

depends on what they do...

they should use Aldon on all blitzes especially when they over load the ends ,kinda like the old 46 defense. Now that would be a sight ..you got J smith on the right side with Bowman and Aldon flat out pass rushing, taking the blind side with great quickness and force the QB has no chance lol!!Then you got Willis doing short coverage assignments and then the sacks just keep comming.Whammmmm!!!! LOL!! GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say it's definitely Haralson that loses time although the poll is practically even at this point.

Brooks may get a lot of flack for his off sides, and it drives me absolutely crazy as well, but he also made all 3 tackles against the Eagles for our goal line stand. He also has a couple of pass deflections and has been solid in sniffing out screens and quick passes in the flat when they’re coming his way.

Aldon Smith side preference

More commonly than not, I think, pass rushing beasts, like Aldon S., would tend to line up on the right. So I am a little puzzled by the side-preference related comments.

Can anyone expand on to what degree Aldon seems to prefer/perform better from the left and if that is likely to continue going forward or just a matter of where he is on the learning curve at this time?

by zacksf on Oct 4, 2011 9:12 PM PDT reply actions

post tomorrow

I charted Aldon Smith’s snaps in a post going up at noon tomorrow. He played 25 snaps at RDE, 9 snaps at LDE. My mind is mush right now so can’t recall where his sacks came from off-hand, although I believe both were from the right.

Love the versatility

He reminds me of a young Charles Haley.

Justin Smith is something else. 100% Effort! 100% Class!

"I was just running toward the ball," Smith said. "The guys in front of him were making him slow up a little bit. I just went for the ball and, luckily, it was there."

by riderless on Oct 5, 2011 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions

Simple answer....

Look at the depth chart. Smith is behind Harrelson and Brooks is all alone on his side. Brooks will be on the field along with Smith primarily; just need him to stop jumping offsides.

by 9thevolution on Oct 5, 2011 7:35 AM PDT reply actions

Depth Chart

isn’t set in stone. The coaches have proved already that they aren’t afraid to make adjustments.

Again, it’s important to remember that this is a very good problem to have. Aldon stepping up will cause both Haralson and Brooks to be on their game in order to get the bulk of the snaps.

The other cool option here...

Is to occasionally run a 4-3 alignment, with J-Smith and A-Smith as the ends. It would give us some versatility, and both would be able to bring pressure. And, from a 4-3, we could also blitz one of our insanely fast ILB’s, Willis or Bowman.

Our nickel package is already similar

except J Smith usually is a DT in this alignment. On sure passing downs, Brooks should be LE then McDonald and J Smith on the inside with A Smith rounding out the equation on the RE.

And, from a 4-3, we could also blitz one of our insanely fast ILB’s, Willis or Bowman.
For sure, and Bowman has shown to maybe be even better than Willis in this area. He is fun to watch.

When Whitner is back and healthy

they kinda do run something similar with him playing closer to the box on some plays. He can play almost like a linebacker at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Who would be the linebackers in your 3-5-3 and how would they line up and be used?
